And 'tree huggers' worried about vehicle pollution? How much pollution from every Tesla fire?
Yeah clearly a software problem of the self destruct script
I have two pictures of a hybrid F150 at the ford rouge plant burning if you want them
Feel free to reach on in my website.
Glad the green new deal is being cancelled! Stop Government overreach and greedy Companies selling us crap!
Great work my friend
I have got into the habit of not parking anywhere near either an EV or Hybrid.
Since the fire creates its own oxygen how do you remove the oxygen or let it burn out in the middle of a building. There needs to be an ejection or containment room
That facility was built using LG NMC batteries. That's similar to what GM Bolts, Kia and Hyundai EVs were using. It's the wrong chemistry for storage batteries, and LG has had quality issues with their batteries. Grid storage has moved to the much safer LFP batteries, which are very difficult to ignite. See online videos comparing driving a nail through NMC and LFP batteries. This was clearly a low bid project which as some commenters who worked on building it note, had a bad but budget friendly design. Compare tesla grid packs, they are basically shipping containers placed on slab foundations in the open. This has nothing to do with the concept of battery grid storage and everything to do with low bid cost cutting and not spec'ing the design better. I'm assuming this was another PGE mess up.
What could go wrong? They are having a fire sale on EV batteries at Moss Landing California.
All and this is suppose to protect the environment! Dangerous for the firefighters and putting water on it just put all that crap in the water!
I’d be curious to know who made the batteries for Jeep. If it’s LG that would explain a lot. GM, VW, and several others had similar problems with prismatic LG batteries.
Stellantis uses LG Lithium-Ion batteries which are always of the NMC chemistry. It has this in common with the Porsche Taycan, Jaguar i-Pace and just about every other burning EV or plug-in Hybrid in recent years. It's time to switch to LiFePO4
Green energy? And why are batteries stored up current from the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary? Look at this Morro Bay and Reject this environmental disaster along my home town.
The bottom line is electric vehicles are a folly.
These EVs are like the new version of the Ford Pinto. And just like the Pinto, it's cheaper for them to settle lawsuits here and there than to recall the battery packs and make them safer so this is gonna keep happening.
Let me add some further detail. There are two kinds of energy in a lithium ion cell: electrochemical and chemical. The electrochemical is proportional to the state of charge (SOC) and the chemical is for our purposes relatively constant. But these interact. The chemical energy stored is a combination of the flammable liquid electrolyte as well as the energy stored in the anode and cathode active materials. If you have a completely discharged cell (zero SOC) you can cause all kinds of physical damage to it without anything happening. I am able to disassemble discharged cells to examine their internal construction quite safely without any risk of self-induced fire. There is still stored electrochemical energy but nothing to initiate its release. The stored electrochemical energy, which increases with SOC, has several effects on the danger. The first is that these cells can produce very high currents which can cause burns when shorted, and multiples of charged cells such as in battery packs, especially larger ones, are an electrocution and arc flash hazard. The second effect is that the energy released when a short occurs, such as in the nail pen test you showed, caused localized very high temperatures which can ignite the electrolyte and at higher temperatures cause a runaway thermal condition as the active materials release oxygen to fuel their own fire. When a cell puffs up that is the flammable electrolyte vaporizing into an explosive vapor. The initial fire looks like a gas fire because it is. If the localized temperature at the short is high enough, it will start the runaway thermal reaction which you cannot extinguish as it creates its own oxygen. Temperature also has an effect as electrochemical and chemical reactions are highly temperature dependent. This manifests two ways: if the battery is very cold it will have less available electrochemical energy and the temperature rise to get to self-ignition will be larger, which can dramatically slow the propagation of a thermal runaway reaction from cell to cell. The second part of this is that as the battery heats, more and more energy is available and the reaction accelerates, going exponential. This is a major hazard in these fires. Dead (zero SOC) batteries will still burn violently if they are involved in a fire, but it is more like a fuel fire. Charged ones will much more violently burn as each one releases the stored electrochemical energy to cause rapid self heating and exponential spread. Another factor in battery packs is related to design. Some cells will release their internal contents when bursting (or venting violently) and this contains thin metal foils which can cause electrical shorts and make things worse quickly. Hope this helps.
MOVE THIS MESS TO TEXASS !!! Next to a NATURE PRESERVE ?!! MOVE THIS CRAP TO TEXASS!!!
You cannot have cars like these driving about, simple. As a fire engineer now retired there are three fundamental problems with EV's Firstly, a severe lack of reliable or baseload power especially in the UK and most countries with few exceptions. Secondly, many do not want or cannot afford of charge at home, 50% in the UK. Thirdly. Lithium Ion batteries are a massive safety issue and they also carry a huge far loading, they need to be changed. The point is Lithium ion batteries are a known fire risk and have been so for 30 years before they were ever put into Ev's ,battery storage and other applications so these fires are no surprise to me and may others. It is also irrelevant how a fire may start so even if they are a secondary fire caused by say arson the dangers remain!! they are totally unfit for purpose.
Obviously sabotage.
If the fuel tanks of ICE cars were responsible for these fires, the media would be full of angry headlines: bad engineering, corporate cover-ups, sales of petrol cars must be halted until the problem's solved, lawsuits, compensation claims, car insurance firms refusing cover, etc. But because lithium batteries are involved - and governments are determined to sell lithium battery tech at any cost, including human life - nothing is said. Don't rock the boat. The US president's best friend is a big fan of lithium-ion batteries, so don't you DARE say a thing against them. Even this Comment will draw criticism. I'm a 'hater'. Well, yes I am. I hate lies, injustice, and the placing of profit above safety. Just an old-fashioned girl, that's me.
A big reason car insurance costs are skyrocketing. Only electric cars or hybrids should be charged for these increased costs.
still less than the toxic output of one american city in one day using gas engines.
One thing that really needs to be kept in mind is the fact that the ebike industry is in its infancy. Lack of standardization, fly-by-night outfits selling cheaper ebikes (which use cheaper components, especially batteries). Higher end ebike companies fully understand that battery fires reported on their bikes will spell disaster for their reputation and self-ensure their batteries are of a better or best quality... lesser companies do not. Standardization and battery quality certification needed. USB ports on batteries should be banned as well.
Time to create a new agency (VehicleBatteryAdministration), that oversees recall and recertification of Vehicle Batteries in Use. Not sure it will dodge the DOGE approval though😂❤👍
how about I just buy a regular vehicle with regular door handles and regular vehicle stuff that actually works?! 🧐
There should be so many more subscribers to your channel! Good Information!
there these things are ... trying to SAVE the environment... and the chemical reaction putting out more pollutants than a small engine driving an electric motor. Hybrid is the way to go. Until the Tech is sorted out. these batteries are NOT the clean energy answer. Not yet.
Stop making EV batteries
My cousin works for tesla making the megapacks and he said the way the other batteries are designed is autistic
just manipulate their computer and call them fixed. who today is still buying any of this expensive junk?
It's a Jeep thing...
So's being upside down with the bumper sticker reading "If you can read this please flip me back over."
1. Stellantis is dying in the marketplace; they could care less about their existing customers. 2. Quality of materials in the batteries is also a potential issue; contaminated lithium was a problem years ago in Apple laptops.
Wow! When I left California 41 years ago, Moss Landing was a bridge and a few homes. How things change so quickly.
Remember when every state was gonna let the chinease build battery plants here ahahahahahah yeah that was a horrific idea…looks like that battery’s fire caused more pollution than EV’s ever tried to save
Remember when every state was gonna let the chinease build battery plants here ahahahahahah yeah that was a horrific idea
The government is more concerned about emissions coming from fire trucks making their way to help out out the wildfires in LA County!
Very good , this man talks the most utter sense !!
The end of EV is 2025. And the fires are so eco friendly. All the toxic fumes And all the water from the fire brigade in the land around these fires . Wake up Sheep. The Don knows the truth !
Ive lived in santa cruz and the mountains surrounding. Santa cruz county is ridiculous.
Cheap Chinese batteries.
Software issues in batterie management sounds like lame excuse. Charging requires voltage and current control. How bad is the Software if it can't control the charging from the beginning? There is most likely other issues not SW related.
Stalantis - all you need to know
OIL FOR MANY GENERATIONS TO COME!!! OIL IS RENEWABLE!!!
Battery cars, an unreliable solution to an imaginary problem.
Actually, there are an incorrect AND unreliable solution to a serious problem. But if we get China and India to follow US-type environmental laws, the biggest polluters would cease to provide the vast majority of CO2 and other pollutants. EVs will barely make an impact, per engineer John Cadogan's Auto Expert channel.
I rented a hybrid Jeep Wrangler and drove from Southern California to Tucson AZ., using Interstate Hwy's 8 and 10, temperatures crossing the desert ranged from 105 to 110 Fahrenheit, running the air conditioner the whole way, gas mileage was terrible, I made more fuel stops than I planned for. Hybrids have an ICE engine, EV battery and motor is far more complex than an ICE vehicle. And this hybrids didn't work well in extreme heat, it's range was claimed to be about 300 miles, It didn't get anywhere near that kind of mileage.
This is exactly why I follow you and I'm from the environmental, health and safety field. You rock!
These spectacular fires seem to be common in batteries coming from new production facilities where financial modeling is being used to assess the impact of undiscovered deficiencies rather than tearing down tens of thousands of battery cells to look for defects in production. The first response has typically been software updates based on speculation of the problem to try to limit the occurrence of these fires until the production problem is confirmed and a proper recall proceeds to replace the defective batteries.
yes exactly, Stelantis has been doing this for years. the new wagoneer was a disaster. Companies like Stelantis and Boeing can NOT be allowed to cut costs. They are putting peoples lives at risk to pay for there executives champagne and caviar.
Stellantis is fucked
Buy one ev and make sure your home insurance is still good
Make sure your homeowner's insurance even ALLOWS EVs to be parked in or near the home. Some insurers are already restricting or not issuing policies because of EVs.
Software update will usually reduce the SOC target in ordre to reduce swelling stress in the cells and reduce risk of separator damage. That seems exactly what Chevrolet did with the Bolt battery recall few years ago. I agree that this is a Patch, not a definitive solution. It is very important to recall that battery SOC is in very close relationship with thermal runaway risk and intensity. Brigning these battery to low SOC while being parked and waiting for servicing is crutial. Fortunatly, Some EV like Tesla Have this feature in their service menu that allow you to discharge the battery without the need of driving the car.
