The only way thermal runaway could become a non issue, is to make it unlikely🤔. Using chemistries that are immune(NiCad,NiMH), but still has a higher power density is one. Another is to have a buffer zone with fire extinguishing material around each cell, while still maintaining a higher power density. Third is to have a chemistry, that will initiate a phase change(could brick the cell🤯), to absorb the energy release. The hard issue is the loss of power density, with any of these approaches. May be a day will come in future, where batteries could be making the exoskeleton and the majority of the structure, while still providing safe power🤞.

Is foam fire fighting not safe for batterys?? I mean it's expensive, but for as long as it doesn't react bad with batterys why not have it available. . I'll stick to vegetable oil, safest auto fuel around, with a flash point of near 600F Short of it landing on read hot steel it's not going to burn, let alone the danger of getting all over the ground and water. It's a natural non protroleum product. . 100% Diesel is around 150F 100%-Biodiesel is around 250F

Water does not extinguish lithium ion fires.

There is only one solution in preventing these fires and that is not to buy an EV in the first place ,they are highly dangerous and a major fire hazard , i fail to see why anyone would buy them at all .

They were using a shipping container chassis to haul the heavy battery pack. Only lowboy or stepdeck trailers should be used to haul these. They will lower the center of gravity.

All I can assume is that it is going to take a mass-casualty event, killing hundreds and destroying millions of dollars of property to finally kill off the stupidity of lithium batteries and the vehicles using them. We are already seeing buildings banning the parking of EV's on their properties. I see more and more bans, but fear the only way this will really be taken seriously is something really big and completely avoidable. The whole thing is so stupid.

My point is that hydrogen can be quite dangerous if large quantities explode but massive hydrogen explosions are quite rare, but hydrogen burns very fast and very clean and leaves behind very little collateral damage. The Toyota Mirai can hold 5600 grams of hydrogen in a 142 liter tank at 10 thousand psi. 8 grams at 14.5 psi. Spontaneous combustion is almost impossible without the aid of an idiot and if you poke a hole in the tank hydrogen is screaming out at 10,000 psi the tank will be empty before you can find a match. If you would have a choice would you prefer a Tesla fire or a Mirai fire?

I have to disagree with your script on a single word. You are blaming the battery, rather than the people or equipment that caused the accident. If this had been a gasoline transport, would you use the phrase "the gasoline caused the fire?" Yes, battery fires make for much more complicated situations, but let's be aware of how we manipulate our narrative by misuse of a single word. That's how much of politics work these days.

I think any truck who is carrying a battery storage system should be escorted so the trucks don't go so fast speed had to have been a factor in that..

Something like 70% of ALL US imports come through the ports of long beach/san pedro and this 1 container with 6 batteries shut it down for 2 days!

OK, if these battery power supply unit is this fragile and can't handle a lot of shaking or shock during transport, they shouldn't be transported. The technology isn't robust enough for what it experienced. Too many issues arise, people were put at risk.

There are a lot of scared Luddites showing up in the comments section of video's about LION battery issues.... like this video. Yeah... they are not perfect and there needs to be improvements in safety systems to help prevent these runaway issues we currently see too much of. But remember, people also aid the same type of things you are all saying about Steam engines... then about diesel and Petrol engines... then about jet and rocket engines....! Things do need to slow down and the change to things like EV's and green energy needs to be done at a pace that the free market likes and the world economy can handle. During that time, clever people... people more clever than all of us commenting here, will come up with says making battery storage of electricity better and much safer... just as safety for all those other power sources were made better during their early years. Governments around the world have tried to push this too fast, and people are realising now that we need to just hold on, slow down the movement to EV's and battery storage. Climate change is undeniable... but the truth will be somewhere in the middle as it always is.... man made Carbon emissions is not going to condemn the world to death, but the less carbon we can put into the atmosphere the better... everyone has to agree with that.
