Thanks Leo! I was glad to go out and speak to him about a mutual interest of his and mine, rather than just the same sort of thing he's always asked! Thanks for watching!
Leo as an aspiring bass player i am so grateful to have you in the opeth community. The way how you accurately tab everything and flawlessly play them is js so inspiring. And since i mostly listen to opeth and you have an abundance of their music tabbed out on ur channel. thanks for your work man !
Absolutely made up for you mate. I'm 57 now but I basically was you 30 years ago. I was privileged enough to sit in on interviews with my favourite artists (mainly the guys from Genesis) on many occasions. Your prearranged day in Frankfurt reminded me so much of visiting Mike Rutherford at his home to take part in an interview there. All these years later I now work and tour for the band Marillion. Music is my life. Keep the passion, my friend. I enjoy your videos.
@@thevinylhunters Well, the main thing is.... they're all very humble guys. Very friendly and genuinely good people. No egos with any of them. Touring with Marillion is wonderful. I'm the merch guy! It's a close-knit organisation and everyone takes care of each other. The Genesis guys are chilled out, a real good laugh. I travelled around Italy in 2022 on Steve Hackett's tour and by gig 3 I was working on his merch stand!
Brilliant Jake, well done, that moment, resonates so much with me, I met, not interviewed, my favourite band The Ramones, in the Vigin Megastore in Newcastle, many moons back, I only got them to sign my poster, I was so in awe, I could barely speak but I shook hands with everyone of them and squeaked thank you for doing this today, your my music heroes, to have Joey Ramone say thank you that means a lot, still is my single best music moment. Then the gig that night. You done superb keeping it together. "That just happened" tells everyone, what it meant to you. I bet Michael from Opeth, was over the moon to do a completely different interview from the usual promo stuff.
I used to work for Alice Cooper and years ago I was able to offer to trade my signed Alice Cooper vinyls in exchange for the band to sign my Opeth albums. The best part was seeing Mikael as excited as I was once he saw the records I was giving him. It was their tour with High on Fire and Matt Pike was trying to bum cigarettes off of everyone.
As a foundation Reggae collector I really enjoyed this video. This video demonstrates what ever genres of music you like & collect we all share that passion for vinyl & vinyl hunting...Great interview!
That is interesting, the festival in Romania in the Carpathian Mountains he's talking about is the exact festival that I've been to, and the band I was most excited for was Opeth. The festival name is Rockstadt Extreme Fest. It's basically in a forest in the mountains with a castle in the close horizon, one of the most metal places to host a metal festival. Check it out, fantastic lineups at affordable ticket prices with beer being less than 2euros. Also, crazy rare interview with Mikael, he was really interested in the conversation!
That actually sounds super interesting! I might even want to go to that festival now! thanks for sharing and yes, he loves records so I knew he'd be more into it than most interviews!
I think Mikael is a "Movie" buff as well. All I thought of was, if I met him and he mentioned that, I would have said; "You mean like the Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie 'The Keep'?" . . . I mean, wow! What a venue!
Fantastic video! I also flew from the UK to see Opeth in Frankfurt with my wife - it was simply one of the best nights of our lives. It's great to see Mikael looking so relaxed and talking about his hobby.
So nice. Man, I wished that the so called Superstars of this world were so down to earth like Mikael. I'm not only a fan of Opeth (Oldpsth, Newperh and Nowpeth), but I'm also a fan of the human being Mikael (I like the other bandmembers too). The world would be better of with more people like them. Congratulations that you got to interview this lovable person.
He definitely is! I think the nature of the interview definitely brings that out. It's no longer work when you get to talk about records! Thanks for watching!
Mikael is my favorite Metal musician, and he likes The Beatles, which is the band I started to play guitar and love music, that’s a nice thing to know, this interview was so good, Vielen Dank mein Bruder, gracias hermano 🖤❤️🖤
All of your videos are amazing and I’m definitely not trying to say the others are not awesome, I love all the videos you have done but holy hell man, freaking Opeth, this is the coolest thing man and I’m so happy for you getting to do this, great interview
Wow, thank you! That means a heck of a lot! The amount of time and energy put into these videos is so much so I'm glad to see comments like this that let us know we are doing what we set out to do which is entertain others with our love for records! thanks for watching and commenting!
You have such a relatable attitude the entire video and interview. It’s so obvious that you are so grateful, and “can’t believe this is happening”, and it just made this video so fun to watch. 💗
If there was anyone I'd be starstruck to meet it would've been him but the fact he was so down to earth and just felt like a friend meant that I wasn't. He just felt like anyone else in a record shop. Really great experience.
I'm lucky that I never got rid of any of my vinyl from when I was a kid. And like Mikael, I would find alot of records that people basically would toss out or would just donate to me. Also buying records at record conventions in the 90's for dirt cheap. I could basically make a mint these days if I sold some of those off. I still look for deals which still can be found if you're patient.
This is a great video, Jake. Well done. It was lovely to see your face light up talking with one of your musical heroes. Mikael was very insightful and interesting to listen to. I'm looking forward to seeing your crate digging in Frankfurt. It looked like a great shop.
What a legend. I would pay just for hearing him talking about music and making jokes all the time. I remember seeing Opeth in 2007 in Rome and he introduced himself as ' Hi, I am Mikael Totti '
My grandmother used to pick vinyl records in the trash room when I was little. And gave it to me and my brother. A lot of Scorpions, Marillion, David Lee Roth, Quiet riot..
Wooouw I did enjoy this…..! The way you travel is the way we follow our favorite musicians. Buses, planes, trains, hotel rooms…….You represent many of us. The interview was very relaxed, like a chat of two friends…..he was very assertive…. I can imagine your feelings before, during and after the chat with Mikael. I hope the rest of the band did sign your Opeth book. ❤
Thanks mate! I'm glad you could relate to this video. It really was a trek to do this but I'll never forget the experience! It did feel like chatting with a friend. Just another vinyl addict! 😂
Amazing mate, an absolute dream come true. Even i can't believe you actually got to meet, interview, and talk records with a guy i admire. I first got into Opeth when i heard a track off the free cd that came with Terroriser magazine, the track was called 'Face Of Malinda' from their new LP Still Life, id never heard anything like it. What i used to do with the free cds was, I'd play them in the car while travelling to work, i wouldnt look to see if i knew any of the bands, I'd just stick it in, let it play, and for the most part the music would go over my head until all of a sudden I'd go, hey, that sounds good, wonder who it is, and that was the case with Opeth. I'd never heard clean and growled vocals combined, or spanish acoustic guitar mixed with death metal riffs, i was blown away.
Honestly I completely feel you! First of all, face of Melinda was one of those songs I always wanted to hear live and they played it that night! It is definitely one of my favourites and has to be my favourite from Still Life too. That was the first Opeth album I ever listened to. Finding Moonlapse Vertigo was a very similar experience to yours - I was playing a video of top 50 riffs and most went over my head until this one came along and I thought "hey that sounds good", that was that! Thanks for watching and sharing your story!
This is a great video. As a record collector and a fan of opeth, this was excellent to watch. I got to interview Opeth a few times, 2004, 05 and they were excellent to talk to.
1st impressions . . . - The "music" throughout the beginning: Man, Opeth's music has really changed . . . I don't know what to think of it 🤔. - Your Room in Germany: I wonder if they would let you decorate the walls? Maybe a bunch of Metal posters and a vase with flowers? - How it always seems easy to talk to Mikael, though I think "geek" mode would click in my head and I'd freeze-up, even being considerably older than him :p. But imagine having a discussion of albums, music and movies with Mikael, Steven Wilson & Mike Portnoy while having your fave beverage :). - He could tell that you were a good bloke :). And the commonality of being a collector made it comfortable for you both. That was awesome. VERY happy for you. - As I said to myself, when you asked him to sign the Book of Opeth, _he_ says; "Should I scratch it up?" 🤣😂😅So were you able to get the band to sign? Been into Opeth since "Still Life" (2 months before Blackwater Park was released), but _knew_ about them since 1995 and their debut "Orchid", reading about them for the next 3 albums from a long gone Metal mag called "I'll Literature" whose reviews of the albums were super intriguing, but for whatever reason, never purchased those albums. 1st saw them when they opened for "Nevermore" (Dead Heart in a Dead World Tour) for "Blackwater Park", before Mikael was the "stand-up comedian" he has been for the past decade or so of tours. He was shocked at the response to their music (it was their 1st time to be in the West Coast of the U.S. and Hollywood), and would timidly say; "Thank you . . . thank you very much". Unfortunately I won't make it to any of their shows in SoCal this year, so I HOPE they come back on a 2nd/3rd leg of the tour. The 2 releases from the new album sound BEA - U - TI - FUL. Opeth, Meshuggah and Fates Warning fight as my favorite Metal bands (as far as Prog Metal, FW comes 1st). - Congrats on making it there and meeting Mikael! Looking forward to your follow-up, and you have a new subscriber - Cheers! \m/.
This was great to watch, I wondered if Mikael was being humorous about his chopper flying in 😂 - great work, and having travelled to Karlsruhe for work one time from Glasgow, I appreciate the traveler’s tiredness too. Can’t wait for Glasgow March 2025. Been an Opeth fan for about 20 years. Representin’ the ladies in their late forties here
Yes of course he was being sarcastic! haha. Thanks for the comment! Travelling definitely can get you tired. It's super cool that you're getting to see Opeth again next year too! I already have my London ticket :)
I can see him looking around like a thief and then scratching that vinyl and then grinning like the grinch 🤣- Love you Mikael! Big thanks to the maker of the interview!
He's got that same itchy feeling about records that we all do! It was funny to see him talk about stories like this. I still can't believe he scratched up that Sabbath record but each to their own! Thanks for watching!

All kidding aside, coolest dude on earth. Such an incredible songwriter, his love of all genres shines through his work. Genius. Wish he was my neighbor. I’d probably mow his yard for free and wash his cars. Maybe neighbor is too much. Brother in law?

Really enjoyed your video. Not necessarily an Opeth fan, however I enjoyed hearing a “celebrities” perspective on collecting vinyl. We just subscribed, happy hunting!🎧🙏🏻
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad that it transcended between interests and that it appealed to either just Opeth fans, just record collectors or both! Thanks for watching!
Hello from Ukraine! I watched your video with Mikael Akerfeldt. I was interested! Opeth is one of my top favorite bands. I am a music lover and listen to different genres, but more prog. Would it be interesting to exchange different new groups with you?
I like Opeth, but i've only got 6 albums. The first 6. Yes, you can say i miss the old Opeth. But that's ok, because i keep acknowledging and admiring what mr Akerfeldt pronounces on music. I'll give you 2 quick examples - once he was invited to a Peter Hammill's award event and he introduced VdGG's leading force exactly the way most ''vdgg-fanatics'' would expect, a sincere and deep (aker)felt declaration about a man's musical genius. The 2nd example is right here - the man is sporting a Comus t-shirt! Yours is excellent work too, revealing the kind of sartorial dedication that is often slandered by cold-blooded creatures as fanboydom. To Hell with them.
Mikael! You missed a trick! The Blackwater park 25th anniversary reissue SHOULD have included Patterns in the Ivy 2 and Still Day Beneath the Sun. Especially given your comments on reissues here! 🤘 #opethforever
It's nice to hear him pronunciate his name correctly 😄
Yup it is :3

That was brilliant. It's always nice to listen to interviews that are about the interest of the artist, rather than just about the artist's music.

@@abdul_Opeth Maybe! It's only a radio edit which would be a waste of a cover of course. So maybe the full version :)

My favourite Country.Been travelling there watching football for 25 years, never had a problem and yes,I do visit records stores when I come across them.Base myself in Hamburg which I recommend you visit.
Will add Hamburg to the list! thanks for watching!
Comes across as a very cool guy and knowledgeable hardcore collector. Nice one.
He definitely is! Thanks for watching Nigel! :)
I have so many vinyls and CD's i dont use anymore they are all signed by Sepultura, ACDC, Slayer etc... i have been collecting for 40 years.....
That's super cool Joe! Could be quite valuable and rare.
You were at Bloodstock too? They were incredible there! Still gutted Opeth didn't do a signing sesh there.
Yes I was! I bet you caught Martin Lopez at the Soen signing, didn't you!
Great video jake!! 😀
Thanks Richard!
Nice dude. Love Opeth.
Very nice interview! 🎉
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed
All kidding aside, coolest dude on earth. Such an incredible songwriter, his love of all genres shines through his work. Genius. Wish he was my neighbor.
I’d probably mow his yard for free and wash his cars. Maybe neighbor is too much. Brother in law?
Great video. I'm new to the VC and posted my first video about 14 days ago. I love your channel and looked forward to your next post. Cheers.
Welcome aboard!
Unbelievable !!!! 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Sharon! Glad you enjoyed it :)
It's always been a fantasy for me to go record shopping with Mikael and Steven Wilson.
By the way, I have an og Nicholas Greenwood.
I'd love to do the same with those 2. Maybe it's possible for the future! And wow! When and where did you acquire that gem?
oh ur love came in 2022..then this is more a lifelong dream for me haha..been a fan since 04?? I'm 33, got the logo tattd on my arm on my 18th b day. woo. Mikael is so dope. good job bud!
My love probably pre dated that but they became my ultimate favourite at that point! thanks for sharing mate!
Hi Jake, Great Video, thanks man!!
Thanks for enjoying!
I go by coach when I go to Germany.
Fast forward to 11.20 if you want to see the interview 😮💨
Great video Looking like you had a great time 👍🤓
Thanks Adrian, was a great experience! Thanks for watching!
I can't believe you can drive from London to Berlin in 12 hours. That's how long it takes just to drive across Texas (if you don't stop).
Wow! some great stories there. He is genuinely a music nut so I'm not surprised to hear them! thanks for sharing
Mikael!
You missed a trick!
The Blackwater park 25th anniversary reissue SHOULD have included Patterns in the Ivy 2 and Still Day Beneath the Sun.
Especially given your comments on reissues here!
🤘

You're so right! Both AMAZING tracks but on the other hand, it means that the original single of those songs will remain special and hard to find.
Mikael mentioned Romania. I'm from Bucharest. Come here, mate
I'd love to visit Romania one day! If the channel keeps growing I'd love to travel all over the world to shops to make videos!
Great vid Jake. Please Please Please ask Mikael to re-release Heritage on vinyl!!
Thanks Gregg! It would be super cool if they did that but then again, it means that the original remains to be hard to find and more special!
Many thanks!🤘🤘🤘
Thank you Dave! More to come!
Love your hoody Death so cool
Thanks mate!
