    I use evaporated milk all the time to make creamer for my coffee. I open a can into a pint jar, add some powdered sugar for sweetener, and then add different extracts for different flavors. So good and so much cheaper than store-bought creamer.

    Never thought to use the Nido to make sweetened condensed milk. Thanks! You CAN use Nido to make farmer's cheese and paneer, just with a smaller curd than fresh. Heat to 200º, stir in lemon juice, and strain once the curds settle.

    Take 2 cups of whipping cream and whip it up to stiff picks. Add 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and whip again. This the base of ice cream. Freeze it for regular or add anything you would like. I made salted Carmel by layering Carmel sauce and a tiny sprinkle of salt with about 3 layers then freeze. It's the best ice cream ever and no other junk in it! Great information!

    I used powdered milk to make yogurt. I won't use our normal milk anymore, too expensive
    I have used Trader Joe's whipping cream several months past its date and it was just fine. I opened it, poured it into a bowl, and examined the package for mold or anything weird. It smelt fine and looked great so I used it. Made amazing Alfredo 😊

      @ Angie Wendling thank you for your comment. I have a little box from TJ's 1 month past its expiry date and feel bad about discarding it. I'll check it tomorrow for freshness and if it's still good, I'll add it to mashed potatoes for supper.

    Never knew you could turn the milk powder into sweetened condensed milk, what a great tip. I have done the condensed milk into caramel, dulce de leche, it is so good. Good alternatives. My mother used to mix powdered with the fresh milk, I remember her getting upset when milk went to 90 cents a gallon, she had 5 kids, so I could totally understand.

    As a mom of 6 boys in the 70’s-80’s I would stretch our milk with the powdered milk. The boys were not fans and could always tell when I added the powdered milk. I resorted to using the “mixed” milk for any cooking recipes, sauces etc.

    Hi Jeni! Yes, I was raised on 1/2 powdered milk and 1/2 whole milk to stretch it when I was a kid. My momma always used evaporated milk and thinned it with water to make gravy stretch. I have used sweetened condensed milk and evaporated in my coffee, I make my coffee creamer and it’s so much cheaper than the commercial ones. I keep shelf stable milk just in case I run out and need it for a recipe, keeps me from going to the store for just milk.
    Great information on the different milks and products.
    Hope you doing good and sending prayers to you and your family. Have a blessed night!!

    Jeni, this is such great information to have. Thank you! Since my husband passed a few months ago, I have struggled to keep milk products on hand because I don’t drink a lot of milk, nor do I bake as much. I find I am throwing away a lot of what I do have simply because I can’t use it up fast enough. To be able to make these things a little at a time as I need them will help me considerably. How long will they stay on the shelf and be good for 😊

      It depends on how you store them! Airtight jar, use within a year, air removed and stored in a vacuum sealed bag, 20 years!

    I have a bread cookbook that states not to use dry WHOLE milk because it goes rancid easily. It said only get the other because it’s skim and doesn’t have the extra ingredients or whatever to go rancid. Have you ever experienced this with the yellow can?

    • @Jeni_Gough
      @Jeni_Gough  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I have never had whole milk powder go rancid. I use it pretty fast though. 😊

    We don't have canned whipping cream up here. Do you have a video on canning that

      @Jeni_Gough  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. Not recommended for home canning.

    I did not know there was a difference between whole powdered milk and instant non fat dry milk. My directions are 1 cup water and 1/3 cup powdered milk. So do I make 1 cup water to 2/3 cup instant dry milk to make whole milk?
