Question for people who have researched or have knowledge on cold water submersion/ice baths:
When (what time of day), for how long, and for what benefit do you do ice baths?
A few people pointed out how research shows CWS may stifle muscle growth and/or strength gains.
I found a measly 2 articles (one using only 21 young male test subjects, the other only 17 “trained male volunteers,” between 5-12weeks, cold plunging for over 10min after every workout…
so I was pretty disappointed by the limiting factors buuuuut maybe there’s more?
Benefits from other research articles were: pain relief/reduced swelling, reduced muscle soreness (studies specifically focusing on endurance training), improved mood/alertness/reduced stress
I am not a regular ice bather (hah). I’ve taken 2 ice baths in the last three years. No more than 2min at a time.
I have only ever used them as a psychological challenge.
So I am confident in saying I am reaping neither benefits nor negative effects and will probably never be a regular ice bather but I didn’t know this topic was so polarizing 🐻‍❄️🧊🥁 (hah no pun intended)

I think it’s no more effective than a cold shower to be honest. Most of the benifits are probably inflammation related, so recovery benefits.
Every once in a while a new thing becomes a “trend” but turns out it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
Definitely probably has benifits but like I said no more effective than a cold shower.
I’m sure you know this anyway but nobody ever says it. Ice bath’s could trigger shock leading to a heart attack, so people with heart issues shouldn’t do it. I really don’t think it’s safe. You have the same effect with you fall into cold water and your body shuts down.

From a Sports Science pov, ice baths are great for reducing inflammation and getting you back to your peak performance. Still, they are awful for muscle growth (since that acute inflammation that you're getting rid off plays a big role in that stimulus-recover-adapt process that leads to gains).
So someone who would aim for hypertrophy or strength should avoid ice baths; someone who competes multiple times over a few days, say an athlete (such as a basketball player, or even a Strongman during WSM) probably has these as some of their best tools (because again they're not trying to improve for their next competition, they're just trying to keep their peak performance level).
This is the same reason you avoid NSAIDS (eg. ibuprofen) as they reduce inflammation. Regarding papers on the subject, there should be more than two, but what's important here is the mechanism, so they don't have to be specifically about ice baths (they could be about NSAIDS since they would work under the same principle of reducing inflammation).
Now, if you really want to know about this just hear it directly from someone who knows what they're talking about (unlike me). I suggest going on TH-cam and searching "ice baths Layne Norton" (world record powerlifter, PhD and professional BS debunker) or "ice baths RP strength" (Dr Mike, bodybuilder, grappler, former powerlifter, PhD, Lamborghini and Butler collector, and officially the love-child of Dana White and Jocko Willink) - both these videos are under 9min

    • @RQM98
      @RQM98 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

From the use of cold baths/ice bathing its honestly used more for recovery and would not have a long term effect or impact on muscle growth in general. This might cause a slight slow down of growth due to the heart pumping more blood towards all body groups that would not let you isolate the workout to one area as your whole body is working overtime. This point is moot as you would not be working out straight after a cold plunge anyway. This only applies 20-35 mins after a cold plunge.
The reaction it causes your body to out from is a elevation of heat and heart rate without straining of the body via external pressure (exercise) so it creates a increase in blood flow and warmth that can aid recovery. It’s mostly recommended if you can temperature control the room you are taking the cold plunge in. That after the workout and plunge into the ice water to have a cool down set and to massage most areas that you have exercised more thoroughly. If possible to massage all areas(worked out and not) would have increased benefits to reduce injury and improve performance.
I have previous boxing training and experience in which this was tested. Was more effective towards upper body and leg and with core and back muscles benefits albeit slightly less (as core would have other issues such as frequent sparring and mobility of muscles hindering recovery). At max I’d recommend a 2x a week cold plunge. Not daily as some people follow as it’s not that beneficial to do all the time.

You remind me that real fitness means real effort, consistency and determination. I need that! At 71, after 25 years of barely any exercise, you got me to decide to start again. Its only been 6 weeks, and I tried to move up too fast in weight, so yesterday I suffered a tin of muscle pain. Gotta back down some. Right now I'm still just exercising at home, but am really starting to see the benefit of going back to the gym. I've no equipment here, so increasing weight means adding water to a bigger container and it was way too easy to miscalculated how much more weight I added. Gym looks good to me for sure! But I'm not quitting.

When I first “attempted” the gym years ago I would go for some cardio a couple days a week and quit. Never attempted the weights cause they were intimidating. Now I have an actual schedule and document everything and have been consistent with the gym since the end of last year. You’re awesome and an inspiration, just in case you didn’t know that❤️

You are such a great inspiration not just to the younger generation but also to the much much older generation. After watching some of your videos my dad who is 64 went out and literally bought a whole gym and installed it in the house. A commercial bench press and also an ab bench are arriving in two weeks. We’ve already purchased rubber coated hex dumbbells from 5lbs to 45lbs, an indoor cycle, and a squatting rack will arrive next month. All this after my dad discovered he could only do 7 pushups in the floor😂😂😂 and curling with 20lb dumbbells were a struggle. At the local gym last year the most he could bench was 70lbs not counting the bar. That’s a 35lb plate on each side, pull-ups are out of the question. Saying that your videos are an inspiration is an understatement. I secretly laughed in my mind when he said he wants to be like you! I won’t show him your squat competition video 😂😂😂lol The most he has ever done in a squat is a 25lb plate in each side. Counting the bar is 80lbs assuming the bar weighs 30lbs.

TH-cam should have a bigger thumbs up option for videos I really like, such as this one. I've only been watching a short time but I love your videos. Your sound effects crack me up.

Patty, ice baths impar muscle growth since they inhibit muscle protein synthesis, you can do them to reduce muscle soreness but not right after a workout 🤓☝️

@@theleanbeefpattyI wouldn’t recommend ice baths post workout, but definitely on recovery days. Saunas are better after workouts. The research is there.

Thank you for coming to Japan. I know tattoos are still not very common here, and it must have been frustrating at times, especially in a culture that values "silence as the friend of beauty."
But please don't forget that there are many fans who love you very much in Japan. And Japan loves people from all over the world (except for a few scary ones).
Please come back and visit us again!

I watch a lot of Patty's videos, but something really weird just happened.
I just woke up from a weird dream, and since I experienced this, now you have to.
I dreamt I was at Patty's house, on her farm, with a bunch of other people, to play D&D. Patty was the dungeon master.
Before we started, she passed out a bunch of paper plates, each with an enormous, raw steak on them, and said,
"Eat up! They'll make you big and strong! You're gonna need all that good protein!"
As we all took a bite of this VERY raw steak, patty smiled and said,
    "how is she?"
    "She?" We all asked.
"Yeah, you know? Myrtle? My cow? I slaughtered and butchered her for you this morning!"
Everyone paused at this, horrified. But I just shrugged and kept eating. "Myrtle's a little undercooked, but still pretty good" I said.
Then I heard a really loud "MOO!" that was so loud it hurt my ears, and it woke me up.
    The end.
    And now you know.

There is at least one study from 2015 that shows ice baths immediately post exercise will attenuate both strength and size. In plain English, they will not help you grow or get stronger, but will help with endurance work.
Unrelated, that Arsenal leg press is BRUTAL and amazing, but heavy as FUARK.

Taking two weeks off from working out from weight lifting is actually really good to do sometimes. It gives those joints a break and the muscles typically come back even stronger. Plus your legs look very muscular! I would've never known that you took off two weeks. You look great!!

I heard you're supposed to do the ice bath before the workout because the cold lowers the muscle growth response

Welcome back!!! I hope you enjoyed your trip! Honestly working out after a break is scary and it's just not the same. I honestly felt the pain when you were doing those exercises. Also maybe south Korea is a good country to visit next time. Have a lot of dishes and beautiful sceneries to look at. Will you work on your yoga and flexibility again?
