When she said 15 year olds are more likely to be trafficked it made really sad. I once went with my dad to visit his lawyer friend at the police station and there were dozens of missing people posters. I noticed most were girls, 15 years old and about the same height. My father's friend brushed it off and said in most cases girls run away from home to be with their boyfriends, as if that implied they were safe somewhere. Now I can see they were victims of human trafficking...all dozen of them, and everyone brushed it off.
I hate the "she just ran off to be with some boy" excuse. As if that implies that they're not in danger? If he was a good guy to be around, she wouldn't have had to run away from home to be with him!
When your dad's friend said "their boyfriends", he meant their pimps. And they don't just run away. They get brainwashed or straight up taken by these assholes.
I have a coworker whose hairdresser was a pretty, young 19/20 year old girl. Last year one of her new clients tried to befriend her. She didn't think much of it. They went shopping, out for coffee, etc. One day the woman invited her over to her house. The girl pulled up and was about to get out. Four men jumped out of a van and started coming at her. What they didn't know was her boyfriend was following her to the house (don't remember why). The boyfriend jumped out and yelled and the guys got in the van and left. Fast forward a few months, the girl reported everything and a big sting operation happened. Around 30 people were involved, that female included. It blew my mind because unless you've experienced it, you really don't think about those things happening... or at least I didn't.
@sheik DE you are right, if there is proof, these people should be put to death. I believe parents who know what is going on should be put to death also. It is time to punish boys and men who pay prostitutes, not just punish the ptostitute. If there were no money to be made, then the crime rate would go down.
Honestly.... this video gives me such hope. As a survivor of organized abuse and child exploitation it can feel like no one cares about us/sees us and no one ever will. People like you give me hope that positive change is a real possibility. Thank you.
What a kind comment. Thank you. I'm so sorry for what you've been through and sorry that people have hurt you and that even good people have let you down. More and more, we see survivors like you leading this movement. Thank you for speaking up.
what about escorts who chose to do this, are they being forced or trafficked? ppl need to stop generalizing as if all these girls in the industry are trafficked to the extent...some said making more money which is why they doing it! where is the problem?
Kanani Titchen Thank You for your thoughtful, intelligently put, & succinct message. Very few people like you exist. I have so much respect for you opening your eyes & your mind to thosexin need. I learned a lot from your talk. The problem is enormous...
That’s because unless these girls are in Thugville consistently, the pimps want for the girls to blend into their normal lives, hence school, work, etc.
It’s cause of the word trafficking, to all of us it implies traveling, but in human trafficking it just means that you are forced to do something, it can even happen in your own house, by your own family...
The increase in reports of human trafficking are not *necessarily* an indication that trafficking is increasing; they may be indication that we are better at identifying victims and reporting. Take heart, and remain steadfast.
Yes, correct. The problem likely has been severe and underreported for decades, but now we are developing eyes to see these individuals. Physicians, nurses, hotel staff, flight attendants, dentists, and others are learning to recognize and assist these victims. For people who want to help: we need resources - safe housing, clothing, food, and counselors and artists and physical trainers who are willing to undergo training in working with victims of toxic stress and repetitive trauma to work with some very challenging patients. Yes, it is very likely that a number of these girls and young women have undocumented infants, and we assume that these children grow up in the Life, exposed to violence and exploitation. To help them (and countless other *documented* children that grow up amidst violence and exploitation), I believe the answer is much larger and more difficult: we *all* need to work to mitigate or eliminate racism and poverty, (including racist posts and hate speech on social media). Sounds like pie in the sky, but other societies/countries have done a far better job working toward this end with far fewer resources than we have in the U.S. Surely then WE are capable.
Kanani Titchen totally agree. I hope, with the internet, global awareness and support groups, trafficking of any kind is eliminated. no one has the right to "own" another person.
lygophile no....our govt entities expend too much resources with the War on Drugs....they almost veiw sex trafficing as karma (in their eyes) for bad choices and that the victim doesnt deserve their help
Exactly right. They hardly talk about this in American schools in my experience (at least not effectively). They need to dedicate days in class in elementary and perhaps middle schools to this subject and to informing unaware children to the real signs of it for their own safety and the safety of others.
My mom made me watch murder shows with her growing up and would tell me what to do if I ever got kidnapped. My cousin, and countless friends have almost been kidnapped or followed by a big white van. 3 days ago my friend Vanessa had someone try abduct her while she was walking home at night, the police caught the van, and driver, but the other suspects fled. For the past 5+ years, I've always carried a switchblade with me. It stays in my pocket, ready to use if I need it. I haven't had to use it on anyone yet. I had an incident 3 weeks ago when a man was hanging out in the alley by my garage, and walked into my backyard. I had it ready, but he was coming to see the old tenants who used to live there before me. The only reason I got out of my car was because my neighbors and their loud dog were also in the backyard.
Don't touch human trafficking people this a very lucrative part of the wealth pie you try to stop your own government might come and kill you early very very sensitive topic
The problem is all the people who make such good money from it .. protected by politicians on the take or interested in the product. So much corruption.
Oh my...I remember when I was 15yo, I was walking home back from school, with my headphones on. I was feeling uneasy, so I stopped the music and heard a car behind me. When I turned around the car was following slowly, and then accelerated reaching my side. It was a middle aged woman, and asked me: "Hi! Do you want to come with me? I'll take you home", and I was like: "Uhm, no, thank you." but she insisted, so I told her: "listen, I said no." and faked a phone call. The woman just went full speed and GIRL, I DIDN'T REALIZED. It seems so obvious but I always thought she was just a weird woman trying to help in a very weird way. Sorry for the bad english, I'm Italian...
Noa Giacco wow I am so glad you were smart and said no to that lady. It’s so sad to think women can do this to other women. How sick in the head does one have to be?
Y'all a seemingly nice woman approached me at the mall today and started talking to me out of nowhere and was promising me mentorship and a job to make a ton of money, get rich, and retire by 30 and was like, "ya lets meet up for coffee. You can meet my mentor and everything!" She was asking about my age, name, where I lived, even my phone number. I didn't know this lady and she came out of the blue while I was just trying on shoes. I suspected she was but I realize now she was likely a human trafficker
This happened to me recently. I'm 39 but I look pretty young. I was in Tjmaxx after getting off work early. The girl walked up to me and started up a conversation. She told me she use to work retail and we chatted a while because I did as well. She got my number and said she'd call or text so we could go get coffee. She text me but I didn't answer that night. I wanted to text her back because it wasn't clear why we needed to get coffee so I just wanted to be nosy and see what she'd say. I had no intention of meeting her because there was no reason to. Time ended up passing and I never text her back but now I'm seeing your comment and it's making me think. When we were chatting in the store something seemed off about her. She was telling me she wanted to progress and make more money and someone approached her right at the right time but it wasn't clear what she did as a job. Her eyes were weird too like she was kind of scared or worried and she barely blinked. So now I'm wondering was someone standing by watching her. She was pretty well dressed too like she looked well kept so maybe she was the front woman to get the girls hmmmm. Glad I peeped out the weird signs.
adoRebelstyle this just happened to me too and I didn’t handle it as I should’ve it seems. Definitely was very weirded out and cornered practically but I just wouldn’t move my feet tried getting me for coffee but I ignored the calls and texts
@@jonwiffen7591 As long as you didn't go you handled it perfectly! I never even thought anything like that when I was talking to her. Well I did sense a weirdness but in the moment I couldn't put my finger on it. I really kind of hope I'm wrong about her because if I'm not that means she's approaching others and I know if I didn't know right away others won't and they might go.
@@niklaskraus1030 they are also. It's kind of misplaced rage on her part to comment that since the original commenter said he is planning to do something about it🤷♀️
I believe this wonderful woman knows exactly what's going on why and whom is doing this.... the eye doesn't see what the mind doesn't know is an amazing quote.. the main "customers" of "high end" trafficking are politicians, lawyers, law enforcement etc. they're rich, powerful and know they'll never face consequences due to cover ups... hundreds of kids have come forward as adults and have testified to this and yet no one believes them and or it never gets national attention... A large part of the problem is that when the richest and most powerful ppl in the world are involved they have limitless resources to hide, lie, cover and get away with anything and everything they want.
I love how she accidentally said, " my family" Clearly a caring woman who is what a doctor should be! We don't see what we are afraid to see, I say. We don't see what we don't want to fix. It's too frightening, we think, too sick, and overwhelming. Or we take the judgmental route, and if they are above 15 , want to think it's their own fault. That they are inferior to us. Talking about it , exposing it is vital. We have to face this boggy monster! Our future depends on it. It's is hard to act, to know how to act. Yes. I am proud of this doctor for having courage and wisdom! Her humility and acknowledgement of the situation is vital in helpers. Shaming people is what many physicians are good at and it is not helpful. They need to listen to this lady, who is able to put her compassion above her arrogance.
You're very kind. The real heroes are the survivors who are fighting for others, and (for that matter) just fighting to get through each day. Thanks for listening and hearing.
Kanani Titchen Thank you Ms. Titchen. I think I may have seen a girl in "the life" ay my job a few months ago. I didn't realize that possibility until later hearing a commercial about sex trafficking. Thank you for telling us what to look for.
If severe consequences were dealt to the men who buy these girls at the conference weekend, accompanied with shame and a registry and everything they deserve, it would go along way to deter. Instead, the only thing we do is try to scoop up some of the girls with a little net, in a huge tank. It’s good something is being done, but it’s nowhere near enough. Man who purchase and traffic these girls need to be treated like murderers of lives. Re-focus the drug war on a war on predators. Why does this seem so alien to people?
Getapetahome most of these guys were customers don’t even know that they’re seeing trafficking victims. Then there are the politicians that do not care
There has been a tremendous amount of victim-blaming. The first step toward a solution is changing the terminology and our approach: rather than arresting underage "prostitutes,", we need to work harder to provide victims of sex trafficking with safe places for recovery that are equipped with staff trained in trauma-informed care, PTSD, medical issues related to chronic abuse and sexual violence, substance dependence, and education.
I completely agree. Six years ago i stopped using the label 'prostitute' in a decision made after i began asking women working in that line what dreams they fostered. My favourite topic was to invite them to talk about their dream house. It often took a bit of me clowning before they'd start actively imagining, or building on memories of old visions. Almost all of them wanted to live near their moms. Not in the same house, not even next door; No, the sweet spot seemed to be a short walk between theirs and their mom's front door. One woman, who'd been in a tumultuous relationship with her pimp for 9 years, dreamed of a house full of songbirds inside and out. I was 'seeing through water' by the time she finished talking about her wood-constructed cottage filled with birds. I couldn't help remembering the noise she and her partner of so many years made every time they had a fight. I knew the presence of birds in her fantasy signaled a yearning for domestic peace. Any time she got liquored-up or he came home on stimulants there was bound to be one of those explosions. No birds hung around then. I should probably stop using the label 'pimp'. I know barely anything about him except that he's entertaining, passionate, and cares deeply for his kids. So does she, and they aren't even hers biologically.
Heath, it sounds as if you have forged some remarkable relationships. What a poignant story about the woman who wanted a house full of songbirds. You bring up an interesting point about traffickers, many of whom are men but some of whom are women. And some are friends or family members of the trafficking victim. We know even less about this population. I'm less forgiving of anyone who exploits minors and subjects my patients to repetitive physical/sexual/psychological violence. But it is important to realize that the industry of sex trafficking exists partly because of enormous socioeconomic disparity, and the traffickers and their victims often are byproducts of poverty and unemployment. Thanks for your comments.
The most difficult ones to save are babies and very small children. Months ago while I was in a “big box” store, I heard a small child crying...probably between 2-4 yrs old. The cry sounded different than a normal baby cry...it sounded terrified and inconsolable. I “looked for” the child ( not intensely, just gazing in the direction of the sound, which was halfway across the store) but didn’t see anything....eventually it grew more distant & then I didn’t hear it anymore. If I HAD gone and found the child, what could I have done? I could have made a scene; Asking the people who had her what was wrong? Were they her parent? Did they need help? If we’re going to make a difference we’re going to have to accept risking embarrassment, creating awkward situations, calling attention to ourselves as well as sometimes being wrong. But helping one child is a great deal more than the alternative.
Kathy I see what you are saying. I work at an airport. I really wonder at the things that are going on when I see a teenager or young girl in a car with a grown man. I'm learning how to spot and identify trafficking from watching videos like this. I'm very sad to hear the story about the baby. That must have really hurt your heart. It is good you are looking for these signs.
It's so sad that, oftentimes, the first situation is the one that wakes us up despite our not acting. It has happened to me with two separate matters. I now react immediately to both.
When I was exactly 15 years old, (I'm 28 now) I was in Walmart looking at CD's while my mom shopped for groceries. This Hispanic man, looking to be between 30-40 years old approached me.He was covered in what I would now recognize as gang related tattoos; they were on his face, neck, everywhere, and his English was very poor.He kept asking me if I liked to drink, what kinds of drugs I liked, and whether or not I enjoyed swimming.I was being polite, while trying to find an exit from the conversation. Then he started trying to convince me to leave with him,and I saw that as an opportunity to say "I'll have to go find my mom first." At that he became obviously frustrated, saying there was no need in that and to just leave with him.Luckily my mom walked up just then, and that guy took off as fast as he could. We told management about my experience, and they informed us that they had already received several of the same report that day. This took place in North Carolina.
I lost my children and grandchildren to human sex and drug trafficking. The law enforcement in san diego turns their back because they are most likely to accept bribes. I know this because I was gang raped for not keeping my mouth shut. Where is the justice in our society? My predators will be free from other crimes but haven't stood trial for what they did to me. Other than raped and mangled from being struck by a vehicle has left me with feelings of anger and no trust in the judicial system. I can't forgive those who. I thought were my advocates. Scarlett
Scarlett, I'm so, so sorry. I've met other young women and men who have been victims of sexual assault and/or victims of trafficking, and there has been no justice. AND, I've worked with officers from NYPD and Philadelphia PD and the FBI and even ICE who are very, very concerned about this problem and working to fix it. Organizations like GEMS are working to educate and re-train law enforcement. www.gems-girls.org

Cece Midnight nobody said adults don’t get trafficked. She’s a pediatrician so she specializes in child medicine, hence is speaking about her experiences. Young girls are the highest trafficked group - these scums purposely prey on weak, impressionable kids.
When I was 17 a guy gave me his number and when I finally decided to call him he asked me if I like clothes ,money, jewelry and of course I said yes. He proceeds to ask me if I would like to go out of town and I was like NOPE. He asked me to go to Vegas with him and I just met him. Thank God I called him from a payphone and if course I hung up immediately. At the time I didn't know about human trafficking because this happened back in 1997. God blessed me with the wisdom and discernment to see what that was years later. It really makes me wonder how many women fell for that. Wow..just wow. God bless all that read this in Jesus name Amen🙏( this happened in California)
Yes, dlrunner, it may be a lack of moral courage. It could also be well-founded fear. Those who engage in buying and selling other human beings can be dangerous people and quite mentally ill. Health care professionals are just people, susceptible to threats and fears and prejudices and their own past experiences, and so they have different capabilities when it comes to confronting severe trauma. We need to have compassion for our health care workers, too.
I appreciate so much about her talk. The specificity, the lack of judgement, the lack of melodrama and exploitation. She is being honest, transparent, and sincere.
When she told the story of the girl. Saying “. I want my mommy”. I suddenly gulped You know that gasping for air when you’re just about to cry suddenly. I want to know how many of you felt that ? We should all. That is terrifying.

I’m a nurse in NYC and human trafficking is a new priority first time assessment for the patients in my facility. We actually have to document this now.
As a nurse, what have you done to make sure that the medical system isn't being used by US authorities to abuse their victims even more under the guise of providing medical and legal care? None of the nurses I spoke to were willing to even speak up to stop abuse, I would try to tell you what all has gone on, but am not allowed... Being that Ted and TH-cam has automated their website here so that i can only use certain words, i really can't describe what's going on, these people that are supposed to be helping us, are not. Nobody is even helping the real victims of abuse speak up. Please submit feedback to youtube, telling them that victims of abuse in the comment threads of their website need to be set free so we can speak up about our lives. What you're seeing on the TED stage is completely vetted material, a psyop
One time my husband, 2 year old daughter, our new born, and myself were at the Boston Aquarium. Our 2 year old was getting tired and grumpy so we decided to leave. My husband was holding her and she was crying and screaming for "mommy". No one even looked. I was a good few steps behind with the stroller and baby. She could have been being taken and not a single person even noticed. Perhaps people are afraid to offend but I'd rather be slightly offended than without my children.
I was working in a retail store and a lady cam to me white as a sheet and said her baby as taken. The look on her face was stark fear!!! I think the manager stepped in.

My mum works in a pediatric emergency department and she talked about the training she and a few other nurses went though to spot human trafficking. Others on her team have found girls that were presumed missing because of some of the signs mentioned in this video. Surprisingly, some of those small hand made "we'll buy your house" signs that we saw every day on the drive to school turned out to be connected to traffickers.
Please share how those signs are connected. As I understand it, the people that make those signs are actual real estate investors entrepreneurs that live in said city.
Anna A. In many states, people who do occupations involving children such as pediatricians, teachers, clergy, coaches, etc are supposed to be trained for this.
I look younger than I am, and when I was 18 I had had a very heated argument with my mum on the payphone near the bus stop. I was crying non stop (She had triggered a BPD crisis) and I didn't want to go home. This guy stopped his car a d told me through the window if I wanted a ride, that a pretty girl like me shouldn't be crying. I told him I had a bf (I did) but he kept insisting. I told him to stop bothering me using Mexican curse words and ran into the nearby supermarket, the guy sped off. In that area there's a boarding school for kids of working class parents that can't take care of them. Years later I saw another man speaking to a girl on the same bus stop, she was alone, but as I approached he left. I didn't say anything. It just clicked that they both could've been traffickers. It's a common thing here in Mexico.

A year ago I moved with my family to upper California. About 2 to 3 weeks of attending school, people knew that we were new in town (not a big town very small) and we were walking back home about, the school is 3 streets away from were we used to live and all of a sudden a red pickup truck drove slowly stopped right next to my sister and a guy was about to come out, but they saw me, I'm not that tall only 5'8 but built. She didn't see it, but I did, I saw all the red flags. I pulled her by her backpack right behind me and I put my hand behind my back as if I was reaching for a gun. I stood there just glaring back at the guy, it felt like hrs, but it was only seconds and he gave up and they drove off.
Stormie Days, thank you for your comments. All sorts of people buy sex, but you're right that the wealthy and those with disposable income buy more... and are protected by their power and privilege. We have a lot of work to do.
No, not true at all, in the US, poverty is the biggest source of trafficking and it's often people who were raised in those conditions who are the perpetrators.

This issue has always been so close to my heart. I remember a pimp approaching me in an underground train station which lead up to the city center mall. I was coming from my car through that station when I was about 19/20... I felt scared and uncomfortable. He tried to give me his contact information. A woman I used to work for only affirmed my story... Not because I told her but just from hearing the scenario. I just wish more could be done to the people who actually do it...
This has opened my mind to an entirely new perspective. I will, from now onwards, be not just thinking but also acting. Thank you so much for this ted talk.
I'm not sure if this was ever taught in school for me. Which is crazy. I was always taught about stranger danger, but never to look for signs. Much applause for what she is teaching.
What an important presentation. Everyone needs to watch this! I am wondering, though, how are teens bussed away from their parents every weekend? What do their parents know about it? Maybe this was answered but I missed it...
Great question. It's alarming, isn't it? We didn't ask for details about their being bussed to the city (risk of re-traumatizing the patient), so that's a better question for law enforcement and FBI. But I see many teens who are (appropriately) off spending time with friends on weekends, so it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility that parents would miss this (especially parents who work 7 days per week and/or a couple of different jobs and/or with younger kids in the house). In some cases, parents and/or trusted family members may be involved in the trafficking.
Victims who are groomed by loving interactions from the pimp usually have massive parent issues and don’t feel loved by them. A lot of parents neglect the kids once they turn 12. And if the family is broke and it’s a single parents working alll the time they might not notice. Or the parents could be heavily disabled.
Great, Kanani Titchen, that you speak up and explain about this subject. I've met victims and counselors who were visited by clients, female clients, who talked about MK Ultra and Project Monarch, both engaged in human trafficking. In the UK there's a fast-rising number of youngsters experimenting with drugs and drink in their teenage years. Handlers approach them outside the school gate, forcing kids to be couriers. I strongly suggest that in the training for psycho-therapist and other forms of therapies, where mental problems are addressed, this subject of human trafficking is discussed, so that therapists can follow the example of Kanani Titchen and keep their eyes open while asking the right sort of questions. The Netherlands, and Belgium, are the 2 European countries with the highest intensity of human trafficking.
@@jeskeepinitreal I agree that the title of the video is misleading. Unfortunately, I wasn't consulted on that. See above an answer to shethewriter's question.
If you're reasonable yes. Apply some logic. Might this just be a father with their daughter or is there definitely something fishy going on. And she did tell you what to do: "if you want to help visit these resources" not her fault you were to lazy to do so.

Kanani Titchen God Bless You Kanani!!!! Your presentation is a God Send! Your making a difference. The world needs more people like you!!!! You are awesome with your courage to stand up to this sick and twisted reality.
The only thing missing from this amazing, eye-opening video is a clear view of the slide presented at the end listing the organizations we can reach out to in order to help and/or seek help.
I am former US Army 11Bravo infantry. We are trained in combat arms trafficking and I can list red flags to potential traffickers. -people who use the term "patience" as buzzword and potential threat -"friendly" behavior seen as potential threat -perfectly shaved, clean clothing etc
Whenever I read/research human trafficking cases all I can think about is the guy who tried to coherse me into his car when I was 19 years old and walking alone to work. Obviously I'll never know if I was over reacting or not, but I got awful vibes from him and he was chilling. I was easily pressured back then and I am SO glad I was stubborn that day.
The more upsetting thing we don't know is how like she said they could be anywhere. They are in hospitals too, police departments, schools, foster/adoption services etc. They are everywhere and are devil's pretending to be angels of light.
I CANT FUCKING TOLERATE THIS INJUSTICE. I feel so helpless. I HATE THIS I hate how this world can be so cruel. I hate how complex this problem is, I hate this.
A SOLUTION: Foster care, mentoring those on the fringe. 80% of girls meet a pimp who will traffic them within the first 48 hours they run away from their trouble home or foster care family.
I was in a dollar store with my mom when we both heard this muffled crying/begging. It kept on saying *please help me!* The voice sounded like a recording, like it was coming through a phone. Because of this I decided not to do anything about it. All because I thought it wasn't my business. On the walk back, I regretted it so much. If that child was in a bad situation, I had the opportunity to help them but I didnt. I still regret this so much
That’s actually a VERY common way for a trafficker to trick a women. Because our motherly instincts as women come out when we hear a baby/child crying. They use it to lure you in and kidnap you. Be diligent, if you EVER hear something like that, call the police immediately and let them handle it.
Keep up the good work and keep educating fellow physicians to be alert and pro-active to recognizing and identifying these at-risk girls and those already in “the life”! Your talk raises awareness for all of us to be more alert. God bless you!
Thank you for this. So many people think it's only kids that are trapped. It is amazing to me how many married women are pressured by their husbands in the PNW to engage in polyamory. They are trafficked by their own husbands and look like normal families to the world.
Andrew Wright Yes we have addressed the issue. Unless this is taught more in schools and to the general public for everyone to spot the signs and report the issues real-time then we won’t be able to make progress
Thank you for speaking up about some signs of this horrific business. By keeping our eyes open to the dangers of others and ourselves, we guide the world to healthily live full out.
Check out a movie called “I AM STILL HERE”. It’s highly disturbing but a look at just how bad it is for some and how easy it is for a kid to be playing in the park with parents nearby and still end up in a situation like this. I cried through the movie so fair warning.
My toddler daughter was being carried out of a gated park in a very upscale neighborhood by a very stylish woman as her grandmother read the newspaper near by. Thank God she looked up in time and ran to and confronted the woman who relinquished my daughter. My mother in law was so freaked out by the near tragedy that she did not tell us about it for 20 years. I am so grateful for my happy ending and distraught to know this is REAL.
Happened to my lil bro. He was coming from tuition which was near our house, I could see him enter and exit the house where he was taking tution as it was in the ground level and we live in 4th floor of a building so it's easy to see. So, when he was coming back from tution I was in balcony and was seeing him coming back home then some guy in a scooter stopped near him and asked my brother "where he was going", "where did he lived", and that he will take him home in his scooter and was asking my brother to hop onto his scooter my brother refused but he was quite persistence but suddenly his scooter fell and my brother speed walked home. Mind you I had no idea what conversation was going on as I couldn't hear it, I asked my brother that who was he and what he was talking about and he explained it to me. I told my mother and she was quite frightened and from that day on I go with him and when his class end I come to take him home. Even though it not much of a distance Iam always afraid that it will not take much effort to grab and kidnapped my brother and it still haunts me that it could have happened right before my eyes and I couldn't be able to do anything. So always be alert and attentive of your surroundings and always remember as it helps "People are not nice" with this mentality you will always be on alert.
The question remains though; What can I, a regular person, do if I spot a person who might be a victim?? I don't have a physician's authority or any other authority to approach people and ask them such questions and I definitely don't have the authority to intervene, so what can I do??
You don’t need ‘authority’ to intervene. You are human, that is all the authority you need. Do not put yourself in danger. Make a scene, get others involved...there is power in numbers. Be safe.
@@jenlinds1 Fair enough, you don't need authority but you do need evidence. What I mean? I'll give you an example; A couple of years ago I was in a hospital in the emergency room and right next to me was sitting a girl about 16 years old and an older woman that claimed to be her mother. The woman was dressed in a short skirt and wearing some heavy make-up and the girl was quite shy and was also afraid of needles so the nurse was trying to lift her spirit a bit. To me none of these things seemed weird but my mom who was also present, turned to me and said "You know I really don't think she's her mother." And proceeded to explain me that this looks like a trafficking situation judging from the looks. My mom could be right but could also be wrong. What do you do in a situation like that? You can't accuse someone of trafficking just because you don't like their looks
Anna Yannaka Understood. At that point I’dve recommended to go to the nurse with the suggestion it might. Be concerned, not judging, & if the nurse has a kind heart she will hopefully get involved. The nurse DOES have the authority (& legal obligation to bring in more authority if it does come to something.) Mostly, you just do the best you can & come from compassion. Other compassionate people will sense this. Women’s intuition is often correct
I didn't realise how close this happens to me, I wanted to distance myself from this statement by using "us" which just goes to show how uncomfortable this topic makes me, and i'm sure others feel. No wonder it's still around.
Its happening everywhere now! Churches, governments, stores, bus stations, everywhere! Keep your eyes open. Better to be wrong than not have called in! This is getting bad in parking lots. In planes. In homes in family areas. Stay aware and keep your eyes open. They have recruiters in the schools as well. Other girls.
It's sad, it worst globally. Some countries call these women hostess in Asian and in other countries like the 300 women missing in Juarez pertains to murders. I remember when the news broke, my friends were shocked, how could this happen.
Now I can see they were victims of human trafficking...all dozen of them, and everyone brushed it off.
lovely A so sad. I wish school has a lesson of showing what you said, let every child knows the danger around them.
I hate the "she just ran off to be with some boy" excuse. As if that implies that they're not in danger? If he was a good guy to be around, she wouldn't have had to run away from home to be with him!
This made me really sad 😔
Praying for everyone living this kind of life🙏🙏🙏
When your dad's friend said "their boyfriends", he meant their pimps.
@Mybiz knoxville tn
Wtf this is insane! Do you have a news article or someting? Never heard of this but i want to read more information
@sheik DE you are right, if there is proof, these people should be put to death. I believe parents who know what is going on should be put to death also. It is time to punish boys and men who pay prostitutes, not just punish the ptostitute. If there were no money to be made, then the crime rate would go down.
Oh wow, good for her!
Are you sure sting operation is the right word? That would mean that they were police
Poppy Michealson so glad u survived it.
People DO care. They just dont know this is really happening in America.
Kanani Titchen Thank You for your thoughtful, intelligently put, & succinct message. Very few people like you exist. I have so much respect for you opening your eyes & your mind to thosexin need. I learned a lot from your talk. The problem is enormous...
I was totally unaware that trafficked girls were allowed to live at home or go to school!! I just learned something!!!
000amp1 me too
dont their parents wonder where the child is during the weekends??
That’s because unless these girls are in Thugville consistently, the pimps want for the girls to blend into their normal lives, hence school, work, etc.
It’s cause of the word trafficking, to all of us it implies traveling, but in human trafficking it just means that you are forced to do something, it can even happen in your own house, by your own family...
*Cough* Epstein
Thats not true
Kanani Titchen, can you elaborate on what you need artists for? I’m trying to get started as an illustrator and I’d like to hear more about this.
Another thing that should be taught in schools to help educate and protect kids. Talk to your kids; teach them how to be safe
Exactly right. They hardly talk about this in American schools in my experience (at least not effectively). They need to dedicate days in class in elementary and perhaps middle schools to this subject and to informing unaware children to the real signs of it for their own safety and the safety of others.
Great suggestion. I wonder if this is or is not talked about in schools.
The only reason I got out of my car was because my neighbors and their loud dog were also in the backyard.
the problem is that many of the kids dont have parents who are safe and have no where to go. we need more safe homes for abused youth to move to
& that's not just strangers who predate. In fact, it's possible that it's usually someone they know well & someone who's trusted.
This must be destroyed in our age.

Noa Giacco trust nobody in these streets 🙏
Noa Giacco wow I am so glad you were smart and said no to that lady. It’s so sad to think women can do this to other women. How sick in the head does one have to be?
Yes, often times human traffickers recruit women to kidnap/lure their victims.
Your English is wonderful! Glad ur safe 💖
If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's to trust no one.
Yes that's exactly what they do. They come out of nowhere and try you.

Trisha Whitehouse
But it can be when the observation os acute.
Yes a good Freudian slip
Go after the traffickers themselves
So do you think Epstein committed suicide in jail ... or that he was killed by those who were involved so he wouldn't talk.
Agree!!!!
where do u think the rich preachers collecting the donations spend it at?
Kathy Bradbury
U let the child get taken
Kathy I see what you are saying. I work at an airport. I really wonder at the things that are going on when I see a teenager or young girl in a car with a grown man. I'm learning how to spot and identify trafficking from watching videos like this. I'm very sad to hear the story about the baby. That must have really hurt your heart. It is good you are looking for these signs.
Shara Sweaney airports are one of the biggest places for trafficking. I hope when you do see nerving situations like that you do some sort of action
YES. One hundred times YES.

At that he became obviously frustrated, saying there was no need in that and to just leave with him.Luckily my mom walked up just then, and that guy took off as fast as he could. We told management about my experience, and they informed us that they had already received several of the same report that day. This took place in North Carolina.

I lost my children and grandchildren to human sex and drug trafficking. The law enforcement in san diego turns their back because they are most likely to accept bribes. Valerie, that is called a lack of moral courage, a different problem and more difficult to correct.

This woman is awesome

Surprisingly, some of those small hand made "we'll buy your house" signs that we saw every day on the drive to school turned out to be connected to traffickers.
wow that's insane.. How does that work? with the signs.
I've see those signs everywhere.
Please share how those signs are connected. As I understand it, the people that make those signs are actual real estate investors entrepreneurs that live in said city.
I'm going to rip out all of the signs I see
I did infantry training for the army and in the training it said "friendly" behavior is a red flag.
This should be shown to every physician
I agree with her. Human trafficking does exist and traffickers are always around.
Her: "1/3 of child runaways are approached by a trafficker within the first 48 hours"
Me: Who TF are these people we interact with in our day to day lives regularly snatching up kids and we have no damn idea??
The world is truly sickening
I'm gonna call bs on that 1/3 stuff
I had a friend whose niece was trafficked in Bemidji to Minneapolis. The poor young girl was saved but the horrors that happened to her for a couple months left her feeling hopeless and unable to heal. She committed suicide. Her captor in prison. She was 15, 16 years old. Beautiful girl.
😭
that’s horrible... my heart goes out to her family :(
I am watching these videos so that I can make sure to protect my daughter from ever ever getting In this situation....I'm a paranoid mother and I don't care. u never kno what can happen so I have to prepare

What a courageous doctor!

Sad world.
Yrs ago, we were at Niagra Falls. I became aware of a single man who seemed tp appear at every venue we were at. The hair on my neck was standing up. I said loudly to my then 14 yr. Old daughter. " Kristi come here, hold my hand" as I stared down the man (which she did). I never saw him after that. Always be aware of your surroundings. Thankyou God for saving our daughter🙏🙏🙏😇
She's courageous to stand up & keep it real!!! I will never mock you; the truth prevails.
I stood there just glaring back at the guy, it felt like hrs, but it was only seconds and he gave up and they drove off.
thank God
I feel like this is what’s happing in America today, there are so many teens /women getting kidnapped it’s scary
Hi Miss Tichen, I am seeking some hlp on how to start working towards this. Need your help in planning a proper approach. Please share your contact where we can discuss this.
We can not solve it. The problem is character. We live in a fallen world.
@@beckyweaver5981 There are many more good people than there are bad. Many are just unaware or scared. Videos like this do give hope. If you look for the good in people you will find it. And finding that be more aware of the bad and wrong situations.
Karen Cloud We still live in a fallen world.
I wish all the victims find happiness one day. They deserve that
This makes me disgusted to possibly breathe the same air as human traffickers.
This has opened my mind to an entirely new perspective. I will, from now onwards, be not just thinking but also acting. Thank you so much for this ted talk.
She said that kids are approached by a trafficker within 48 hrs. You can’t even report someone missing until then. 😕
That’s actually a myth even some police officers believe, you can report someone missing at all times if you have a reasonable concern.
You can report a missing person at any time. And the first 24 hours are most vital. It’s common sense.
This protocol in the police system is probably well known to perpetrators and they know to move in fast.
I heard you should report a missing person as soon as you notice that something's not right.
That used to be true but thank God it is no longer.
Thank you for having the courage to come forward. Most medical doctors rarely go against "the system".
I'm not sure if this was ever taught in school for me.
Which is crazy. I was always taught about stranger danger, but never to look for signs.
Much applause for what she is teaching.
Blame the elite and government.
bogey19018 ...
BlackRock Tile it’s true. This is systemic and global. But their time is running out. Tick tock. Tick tock.
Cut your lazy blanket blaming. On a different day you would call this good woman an "elite" too.
Zooropa Earthling ehhh not really
Also illegalsto who come they cant keep track of whos coming.
I am thankful that she listens to her gut, it’ll never lie!

GEMS is a great organization.
Important information! Need to be educated and open eyes
I am glad awareness and help resources are growing. So sad.
Thank you for being a caring physician as well as a kind human being sometimes it’s hard to find both in one person
It's you and people like you that make this world a better place.
Here we are in 2020 and not much has changed- your talk opens the door to info and awareness.
If not me? Who? If not now? When? Thanks for standing up for what you know is right. God sees the good you do.
Why doesn't he see the bad the traffickers do instead?
Keep up the good work doctor
I want to know what to do when one suspects trafficking. Can you call the police on a strong suspicion? Is that the right thing to do?
right we still don't know what to do even after the video promised to tell us.
@@jeskeepinitreal I agree that the title of the video is misleading. Unfortunately, I wasn't consulted on that. See above an answer to shethewriter's question.
You bet you call 911...in a heartbeat!
Police(masonpuppets)
If you're reasonable yes. Apply some logic. Might this just be a father with their daughter or is there definitely something fishy going on. And she did tell you what to do: "if you want to help visit these resources" not her fault you were to lazy to do so.
Kanani Titchen God Bless You Kanani!!!! Your presentation is a God Send! Your making a difference. The world needs more people like you!!!! You are awesome with your courage to stand up to this sick and twisted reality.
Dr. Titchen, high regards. Thank-you for what you do.

Just act and don't talk about it. 👁👁
Idk how much I am greatful she made it her business to take on human trafficking. THANK YOU VERY MUCH DR. WE NEED MORE HEROS LIKE YOU.
Wow an actual Tedtalk that benefits humanity.
-people who use the term "patience" as buzzword and potential threat
-"friendly" behavior seen as potential threat
-perfectly shaved, clean clothing etc
I do all the things you said but I’m not a trafficker 😅
OMG she's my doctor!
I still regret this so much
Natalie A I’d see somebody in this solution next time please help them every life is important
Thankyou Dr Kanani for caring, learning and taking action? Who knew physicians would have to learn these skills?! I would add nurses too.
Thank you for this. So many people think it's only kids that are trapped. It is amazing to me how many married women are pressured by their husbands in the PNW to engage in polyamory. They are trafficked by their own husbands and look like normal families to the world.
Thank you. I'm not a doctor but am glad to know of these signs just in case.
Thank you for sharing this topic. Your presentation hurt my heart in a good way. Thank you for “moving” me.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for "seeing" people. Beautiful.
This is important. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you. I hope others will be trained to be aware.
What a profoundly amazing woman
ALL THE DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS IN THE AUDIENCE MAKE ME SMILE. Everyone needs this education. Thank you for helping out our women
Me too! Gratified to see all ages, races, genders in the audience.
We have to stop this
We’ve already spotted it. And no one is doing anything about it!!!!
Andrew Wright Yes we have addressed the issue. Unless this is taught more in schools and to the general public for everyone to spot the signs and report the issues real-time then we won’t be able to make progress
This woman certainly didn't.
Least of all you
Mandatory body cameras for students and workers counter surveillance programs to stop bullying kidnapping and psychological warfare!
Many, many people ARE doing something about this!
Please do your part as well - share this video. 😊
Thank you for speaking up about some signs of this horrific business. By keeping our eyes open to the dangers of others and ourselves, we guide the world to healthily live full out.
Human trafficking actually is terrifying, I don’t understand how they are able to operate on such a large scale.. smh
Thank you for the information. Thank you for making a difference...
The question remains though; What can I, a regular person, do if I spot a person who might be a victim?? I don't have a physician's authority or any other authority to approach people and ask them such questions and I definitely don't have the authority to intervene, so what can I do??
Anna Yannaka get license plate numbers and take pictures, alert the authorities
