    I was on the fence, but now I'm definitely going to put in the time to learn Origami Studio.

    Wow sick thanks Wayne! I'm a dedicated Quartz Composer fan from the day I randomly found the application in the developer software folder on my old MacBook in 2013. I was immediately hooked as I was able to see the interaction and manipulation of various data modules in real time. It was a revolution to me and I became obsessed with it. To the point where I didn't just want to create AR I actually needed to produce some augmented reality. I eventually achieved this after compiling some python code with Apple Script and inserting the resulting plug-in into Quartz. Then one magic day I saw the single marker detector had been picked up by my MacBook camera and a 3D image came to life on the screen. At this point I knew QC was a very powerful tool but no one I knew even used it or even knew about it in 2013/2014 :( So I did a bunch of UI and sound effected experiments by myself and made a few mini apps like sound effected screen savers etc. But overall I had no real community or resources to bother continuing my lone wolf onslaught. So I stopped bothering a few years ago. Anyway this video made me realise the skills seem to be kinda' transferable to Origami Studio using nodes etc. So as I'm writing this comment Origami Studio has just been downloaded, installed and opened. I'm looking forward to getting back into it...
    BTW here are some links to my work to explain where I'm coming from...

      Hey sorry I missed this comment when you posted! That's amazing to hear, I was into Quartz Composer way back in the day too, around 2014. It's really great that the fundamentals are transferrable to modern tools like Origami, but also Unreal Engine.
      And I hear what you mean by the lack of community. Even Origami, as much as I love it, will probably stay small. I just wanted to contribute a bit if I could. I'm actually trying to get into some AR type stuff myself, but I think I'll probably dig into Unreal at this point because of the greater support and community.
      Your work looks rad by the way! Love the illustration work, and I see that old AR snippet! Very cool!

    You definitely sold me. I especially love the part about you realizing that Figma could be holding back your design ingenuity in ways. I can definitely see that being the case. You cant design outside the box if the box has constraints on the interactions we have with our devices.
    Well made video! I’m excited to give it a try. I prototype everything I design in Figma. All interactions, animations, etc. I always feel limited though. It’s also clunky, buggy, and frustrating at times. I hope this brings a fresh take to my design process. Cheers!

    Thanks for this. I usually use Protopie for complex prototypes, but some things feel off. I see prototypes in Origami and the interactions feel native and more like the final product.
    I've experimented with Origami, but learning it was a bit challenging because there are so many options so i get a bit stuck with planning an interaction. I'm really glad you created this tutorial series; Origami needs more of them (I don't use Facebook, so the Facebook community isn't an option).
    PS: I'm a big fan of Metalab.

    • @waynesang
      @waynesang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it can help! I hope to try Protopie out, I hear good things but curious where it's limitations are.

    • @bunonregs913
      @bunonregs913 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waynesang for most things it is great, you can make pretty complex logic based prototypes, but then for other things like modals, screen transitions etc its just not great. This is coming from a mobile prototype perspective. You can get an iOS style page transition, but its so convoluted its not worth the hassle. Play is a really great prototyping tool if you are doing iOS stuff but for now it lacks the ability for complex interaction logic (the team is great they are building quickly so i think that stuff will be added)
      Origami to me feels like it fits into that final gap between making a design based prototype, and actually building a proof of concept in SwiftUI / UIKit etc

    I just came across Origami! Figma leaves me wanting more when it comes to prototyping. I know that prototypes are supposed to be simple, and plain but why? I want genuine reactions when testing without having to code a full app. I'm definitely sold on Origami! Being able to use the phones features like the gyroscope, haptic feedback, etc. are huge. I will checkout your playlist!

    This is the only series on Origami (other than theirs) in the whole internet... and it is really good. Thank you!
    I am considering either learning Origami or Protopie, both seem really powerful for fast prototyping once mastered. Do you have any recommendations on the matter? It seems like a fine line here for either go with any of these tools or just jump right into code in my opinion. Thanks!

    • @waynesang
      @waynesang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear this question a lot! Honestly I've only learned a bit of Protopie and once I learn more, I'll make a video comparing them. But I hear good things about it.
      As someone who has (long ago) coded their own app, I still think these tools are really valuable. Developing something yourself is really fulfilling, but I started to limit my designs based on my technical ability. These prototyping tools can let you experiment and iterate so quick, I think I'd still use them even if I was coding as well.

    In my opinion, visual scripting should be built into most digital content creation tools. The power it gives the user is insane!

    Hi Wayne! Love this video and series. I’m curious, how does this tool fit into the development pipeline? From my understanding, it still does not export code. How do developers interpret these prototypes? Are they able to more closely implement designs? If so how?
    Cheers man, much appreciated!

    • @waynesang
      @waynesang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jake! Thanks for watching! That is correct, it doesn't export code. However I have sat (virtually) with developers and walked through how a prototype worked, which is still quite helpful. You end up doing a lot of the actual logic, which a dev can understand and re-implement in whatever language/framework they want. Plus it's kind of an interactive flowchart, so it's a decent spec!

  • @thepramodgeorge

    Hi Wayne, has your thoughts changed on the tool since you posted? Has Origami been able to stay up to date with it's competitors.

    • @waynesang
      @waynesang  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! This space moves so quickly. I think it's still helpful as a first step into node based programming, and that can help in other tools like Unity and Unreal. However with AI assistance for coding, normal coding is more accessible too. I still think it's a fun tool, but hard to prioritize these days!

  • @fedorfilon8984

    Hey Wayne. Thanks for your video. I have a quastion regarding tools for prototyping in you studio. What tool do you use for android applications, because origami studio is for iOS apps only. So that means you need anothe tool for android. How do you manage to syncronize it in a case you build an app for two platforms. Thanks

    • @waynesang
      @waynesang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Fedor! For concept prototyping most things are in Figma, and only occasionally do I use Origami for complex things. Developers can't directly take this file either way, I consider it more of a specification what they should implement. But a very useful specification, as it shows a diagram of how it should work.
