I feel like this song represents two halves of a whole. If you have ever gone through the dark night of the soul, suffered with illness, ptsd, depression, addiction, and other similar conditions, you know that there are two parts of you. The dark and the light. The good days and the bad. This song seems to me that it's about your light side talking to your darkside.
This is a message to whatever alien species finds this record. Love one another, care for one another. Maybe you will succeed where we failed. Love you always, Michael Dale McWilliams. Written at the end of time, extinction of the human race.
Every time this song plays.. it reminds me of my best friend.. She didn’t deserve to go so early.. Even though it was just a month ago.. You were so young.. I miss you..
I didn't know this was a whole trilogy 😢❤. Now I wish I could've started with the first one. I heard this song being played in a commercial for " Partnership to End Addiction " . This commercial has been shown so much.I fell for the song.
my brother died from complications of his addiction back in may. i got a tattoo of a lyric from this song a few weeks ago. he loved the lumineers and it felt right.
Who are these actors ? Powerful, emotional, and without words . Yes the music is the dialogue. I was moving to watch . I turned on to hear the music, and I can’t stop watching the videos. Thank you
I shouldve been listening to your music a long time ago. I heard your song from a commercial. It really touched my heart. This is such a beautiful song. I wont be set in my ways anymore there are new bands worth a listen. And you have a new fan who is going to explore your music. Im 55 heard a lot of great music and this is so good so honest just pure music from a beautiful soul. I apologise for not at least giving your music a try sooner. I almost missed hearing your beautiful music. Dont want to be an old grump anymore. I love your lyrics so sorry to hear of your loss that inspired this song. Youve got a really good heart and a great God given gift.
I found them through the same commercial I'm assuming. Have watched all 10 songs in the series since. Such a meaningful and touching story, but also so sad. I truly hope this brings even more awareness to this problem that plagues so many. I know it opened my eyes.
@@zaxsmith99 It seemed for a time music lost its soul. I thought gone were the days when lyrics actually said something instead of being filled with just random words because they rhymed. Its just great to hear that there are bands returning to putting some thought into saying something meaningful not just choosing words because they only sound good.
III is a cinematic masterpiece. They are geniuses of storytelling with sound, words and imagery as well. I am ashtonished. Wow. Wow. Wow. So happy to be alive in a century where a band like The Lumineers exist. Only wish the album was not based on real events.
I am crying, I'm not joking, I feel so much with all the songs but this... I don't know why but this... I can't even explain myself. Los necesito en México, para llorar con gusto ❤️🇲🇽 love this, Pure art.
Addiction is one of the hardest things life can deal us, whether its us directly affected or a friend/family member. Yet it can also be the greatest accomplishment in ones life when you conquer it and remain clean. 4½ years clean for me...you can do it too...ONE DAY AT A TIME! Beautiful song by the way...
My late Wife said in early 2020 that this song has the Zeitgeist of 2020 for her. Prophetic words since in hindsight it 100% summed up her journey with cancer and it taking her from us later that year. The part thar hits me the most as 100% what happened in her last days.. litterally : “And they wrote all these prescriptions, they wrote me off Like a heel Yeah, the doctors with their medicine left me To rock in my filth”
When you watch all ten one after the other, the story is heartbreaking and beautiful. Addiction and it's disease are hard and devastating for everyone involved and it is the cancer that spreads through families.
I love how informative and thoughtful all the comments here are ,but here are a few things I couldn't keep to myself There's a cinematic parallel drawn between this video and the one released for the song ' Gloria ' wherein Gloria's husband rushes out to take her to the hospital and leaves Jimmy behind simply because he isn't his child. We observe Jimmy being abandoned by various important people in his life ,his parents being the first one and then his wife bonnie , here he is again shown alone. Jimmy sits in the car alone like the abandoned child he once was. Even though the whole family's story is upsetting but the person my heart aches the most for is - Jimmy .
I wasn't expecting this but happy I listened. This song was something I can relate to for sure. My brother died of an overdose and I just remember tracking him down and making him come over and have dinner with me and letting him live with me while fighting the disease. Everyone stepped back and pretty much bounced but my heart was different. Great song, hits home for sure. I love everything they put out.
I think it's amazing how history made us think that the generational suffering of this family was related to the piano (which actually represented Glória), and when Junior burns him, we think that he is changing the family's direction, which is not the case . Because generational suffering begins in Donna (Mother of Glória), and the representation of this was never the piano, but the house, which was built by Donna (Construction focused on video 1). Realize that the house is always involved with family problems, all generations have never abandoned it. If one of them broke the cycle, semiotics would be related to leaving home, which does not happen. In the end, Junior only burns the piano, but returns home, ending up as Glória.
I first heard this, completely unprepared & not knowing how it would haunt me, in traffic, half - distracted in the beginning, but suddenly riveted & mesmerized by the way it intimately grabbed ahold of me. Most songs that get us emotional are about love, or it's loss, occasionally family & the memories that take residence in the halls of our head. Few songs ever affect us in a way that is wholly ourself. I was once again driving alone when I heard it for a second time & my face flooded with tears, unrelenting to the point of near-blindness. I cannot recall ever crying so forcefully while listening to music. This entire song is all that I feel from the inside out, I have literally lived this song word by painful word .
the saddest song i've ever heard... it's like me talking to myself about myself inside my head... i have no idea what's the song about in the writer's mind
Finally an end to the sparks saga. This album was a whole emotional experience which is not usually seen in many bands or musicians albums .these guys brought images and music together to form such intense feeling of pain, remorse and catharsis .it was a delightful pleasure to listen and watch each song of this album.
I’ll never listen to this album the same again. Absolutely brilliant. I already loved the Lumineers but this just set them up on a pedestal above almost every other artist I’ve come across.
I can't stop watching the series. It is extremely good, but also heartbreaking. It makes my heart ache for the whole family. When I thought the lumineers couldn't get any better, dammit!! You guys do deserve an Oscar!
it took damn near a year but I finally noticed that the Sparks' toxic cycle of alcoholism, self destruction and strained family ties is further emphasized by the fact that basically some songs on III could be interpreted as virtually any family member talking to/ about another. Leader of the landslide could be Gloria talking about Donna, Jimmy talking about Gloria or Junior talking about Jimmy. There's other examples that im not quite sure of since they could just as easily be from an omniscient POV
This just bought all those emotions out which I never felt before. I am so happy to see all the positive comments here from the real fans. Kudos to Lumineers for keeping the sanity alive! ❤️
The Sparks are the cycle of addiction through a family. We are all doomed to relive the mistakes and faults of our ancestors, whether we like it or not. But they also show the constant impact of family relationships. No matter how much Junior hated Jimmy for putting him through everything, he still stole all the money to protect them and then tried to take his father with him to run away. Eventually, though, he did exactly what Jimmy had done in the past - just trying to help his family but making terrible mistakes in the process. And finally ends up becoming Gloria, pulling Jimmy out the door and eventually sprinting through the field to get away from his mistakes.
From the prospective of a man who was once the lover of a woman in a turbulent relationship. The two were passionate and they gave each other amazing amounts of comfort and strength. But they ended abruptly and he’s hurt badly. But his feelings never changed. Hers did. She gave up on him and turned her back on what they had. She tries to move on from what they had but her feelings linger and he knows it. He reflects on his pain and their relationship. Verse 1&2 reflect on their time together. Chorus and Verse 3 reflect on their time apart. Verse 1: She goes on acting like her significant other saved her and brought her out of her “darkness”. But it was his love that saved her. He held her in the night and comforted her on the “back staircase” while she was alone and broken. “All the destruction and all the disease” was her current relationship that she couldn’t escape. She couldn’t hide it from him but he was there for her when she needed him. Verse 2: She was often broken and “all alone scared” needing him. He wanted to console her but only come see her if she was alone. She wasn’t. But she didn’t care if he was “on the bed laying awake”. She would sacrifice everything to see him. Even if it meant being tortured, “as she prayed he’d leave her alone”. But he’ll come to her anyway. “He’ll let the darkness swallow him whole” as he goes into the shadows, silently. Because he needs her to know how much he would risk to be with her. Chorus: Things have changed between the two. She is no longer needing him like she used to and he is going through withdrawals. Wondering why. He reaches out to her for help, because now he is the one that is hurting and broken. When he turns to her she is cold and “wrote him off”. Unlike he did to her. He was left to “rock in his filth” as his feelings were his mess to deal with alone. But “from the destruction” of them and “out of the flames” he will still take the fall and be the “villain”. But he just needs her to say it. To say that he is the bad guy and at least acknowledge him. Last Chorus: This is a plea. He is finally telling her that he will give anything to be with her again. Even in the daylight (even after the darkness swallowed him). “There” he will be “like an old enemy”. This is the way she sees him now. As a figure in her past. An enemy. But he will remain the bad guy as long as it takes to make her realize what they had and how powerful it was. Then, and only the will she realize that they are “Like the salt and the sea”. One and the same. Inseparable.
I don't know if this was already mentioned but I love how in Gloria Donna's running for her life and in the end it's her son running the whole album and videos are amazing 🥺🥺🥺❤❤❤

If you have ever gone through the dark night of the soul, suffered with illness, ptsd, depression, addiction, and other similar conditions, you know that there are two parts of you. The dark and the light. The good days and the bad. This song seems to me that it's about your light side talking to your darkside.
I tried to stay with my husband of 15 years. He developed paranoid schizophrenia and I finally had the guts after 6 years to run.
We here can see a really good and professional material of a band that mixed music, photography, story and creates art. Just perfect
They are unique ❤️
Did I just binge this whole thing? Yes, yes I did. Amazing production 👏 great actors. Props to the writer😍
One of the most beautiful, haunting songs I have ever heard..and I am not one to exaggerate. Its masterful.
This is a message to whatever alien species finds this record. Love one another, care for one another. Maybe you will succeed where we failed. Love you always, Michael Dale McWilliams. Written at the end of time, extinction of the human race.
This whole album video is so fckn painful, beautiful. I broke down a few times during this. Alcoholism is heart breaking
MASTERPIECE ❤❤❤❤
The Lumineers deserve so much for what they are doing for their fans! WE LOVE YOU!
This commercial has been shown so much.I fell for the song.
my brother died from complications of his addiction back in may. i got a tattoo of a lyric from this song a few weeks ago. he loved the lumineers and it felt right.
wow. i let out a big breath once i saw it all piece together in this vid. crazy storytelling
Years later and I still get goosebumps watching this video. Amazing ❤️
This whole film has been absolutely breathtaking
This song spoke to my soul. It reminded me of so many things and so many people I have come to know on this ever changing stage we call "Life"
Who are these actors ?
Good for you! ♥
My late Wife said in early 2020 that this song has the Zeitgeist of 2020 for her. Prophetic words since in hindsight it 100% summed up her journey with cancer and it taking her from us later that year. The part thar hits me the most as 100% what happened in her last days.. litterally : “And they wrote all these prescriptions, they wrote me off
Like a heel
Yeah, the doctors with their medicine left me
To rock in my filth”
When you watch all ten one after the other, the story is heartbreaking and beautiful. Addiction and it's disease are hard and devastating for everyone involved and it is the cancer that spreads through families.
A PSA brought me here. This is the best song on the album. Believe me I just watched all of them.
That piano though.❤
I love how informative and thoughtful all the comments here are ,but here are a few things I couldn't keep to myself
There's a cinematic parallel drawn between this video and the one released for the song ' Gloria ' wherein Gloria's husband rushes out to take her to the hospital and leaves Jimmy behind simply because he isn't his child.
My uncle died like a few days ago from a drug overdose and i every time i hear this i cry and think of him i miss him so much
I wasn't expecting this but happy I listened.
Damn these guys are great. I have fallen in love with this group. Their videos are just as great.
Life isn’t happy endings, soberity, love. No it’s full of pain, tragedy, and lows. Thank you for this lumineers !! Beautiful.
One of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in a while.
My favourite corner of youtube but I hope that it soon becomes everyone's center
The cinematography as well as the transition of April into salt and the sea is beautiful
Junior loves his old man...in spite of everything he has been through. And his old man always came home.
Watching without sound during class because.... priorities
💗💙💙💗💗🌿🍀
Same
Same
Vladimir - Владимир Romanov - Романов sure, okay.
But you missed the best part
The piano is amazing. Such a haunting song. It speaks of addiction oh so well.
Beautiful comment 🙏✨
the saddest song i've ever heard... it's like me talking to myself about myself inside my head... i have no idea what's the song about in the writer's mind
We need a big group interview with everyone in these videos.
This album doesn't get as much as love as it should. To me this is their best album yet.
Finally an end to the sparks saga. This album was a whole emotional experience which is not usually seen in many bands or musicians albums .these guys brought images and music together to form such intense feeling of pain, remorse and catharsis .it was a delightful pleasure to listen and watch each song of this album.
i remember first listening to Donna not being able to wait till September to hear all of the song but now its (10 of 10) and Its bittersweet
Damn the sparks got some strong legs
First heard this song from a recent TV commercial. MAD AS HELL that I had not heard it prior to that commercial!!
This song is a masterpiece, no waste.
I m awsteucked! This final one was like... Damn! It shook me. Hail Lumineers!!
Song is #phenomenal !! 🙆♀️🤘🤙
III Masterpiece #Brilliant 🎹 🎻🎸🎙
Lumineers Only get Better & Better !!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
I'm not ready for it to end!
it took damn near a year but I finally noticed that the Sparks' toxic cycle of alcoholism, self destruction and strained family ties is further emphasized by the fact that basically some songs on III could be interpreted as virtually any family member talking to/ about another. Leader of the landslide could be Gloria talking about Donna, Jimmy talking about Gloria or Junior talking about Jimmy. There's other examples that im not quite sure of since they could just as easily be from an omniscient POV
Excellent harmony throughout, just lovely!!! That piano has such a Sunday school, crystal clear purity, tuned to get the point across!
Omg! The Lumineers always make me fall in love with them again. With every song a bit more. Thanks guys!
Verse 1:
She goes on acting like her significant other saved her and brought her out of her “darkness”. But it was his love that saved her. He held her in the night and comforted her on the “back staircase” while she was alone and broken. “All the destruction and all the disease” was her current relationship that she couldn’t escape. She couldn’t hide it from him but he was there for her when she needed him.
Verse 2:
She was often broken and “all alone scared” needing him.
Chorus:
Things have changed between the two.
Last Chorus:
This is a plea.
I watched all the 10 videos again, 2 years later, and once again I'm convinced that you guys are genius! Thank you for your music and your stories!
I don't know if this was already mentioned but I love how in Gloria Donna's running for her life and in the end it's her son running the whole album and videos are amazing 🥺🥺🥺❤❤❤
Grandson
So it seems Gloria was the Leader of the Landslide, bringing Jimmy and Junior with her. Absolutely stunning story from start to finish.
Donna was the leader of the landslide. Read this analysis:

This whole series made me boo-hoo cry but I've never been more thankful
I’m just addicted with this song 😍
I am not ready for the end !
My favourite bit is "you need a villain, give me a name"
Wasn't a huge fan of The Lumineers before this set of songs. M. Night Shyamalan really made a huge impact on their music, I think, because this is amazing.
My God their videos are good.
getting a video every day this week has been the highlight of my week. Is it selfish of me to wish one more would come on friday to make it complete and a very happy friday? LOL
God damn I get goosebumps at that slow mo ending and the piano sound. Woooah.
Incredible!
I have never seen a album that focuses in a actual story. This was like a movie...
If you like it you should check out the wall by Pink Floyd which also has a movie or American idiot by green day that has a broadway musical. All concept albums
3:28 - the music and his running together feels so powerful
this song makes me cry
Amazing song. Runs all over me.
This song is so underrated!! This is one of my favorites by them.
My favorite lumineers song. Its the end of 2020 and I still can’t stop listening to this album.
I got hip to this song on a commercial. It moved me, luckily their name was in the lowest left corner. Masterful lyricism, powerful.
