I love how the videoclips all connect together, but are time incoherent as well. Makes you realize that it doesn't matter whether it's 2020, 2000 or 1980 - people are solving the same problems, with the same heartache, pain, happiness and love. We stand at crossroads in our lives, seemingly minor ones, just like the generations before us did. It's sad and calming, connecting, at the same time.
Lumineers have that rare gift of being able to transport you, change your thoughts and emotions and bring up stuff you weren't thinking about 3 seconds ago.
She falls in love with a guy (Ophelia). Her father dies and the guy she loves asks her to leave town with him (Sleep On The Floor) but she stays in that town. She marries a guy she doesn't love and has a child (Angela). When she's old and divorced she regrets not leaving town with her lover, back when her father died (Cleopatra). Credit to Swiftologist for this theory.
i thought that too but the only thing that doesnt fit is the tattoo in angela ..if she didnt went after him in sleep on the floor she woulnt have gotten the wave tattoo ..
Kim Siles You're totally right. But in "Sleep on the floor", you see her waking up again on the ground, like the whole music video was a dream she had. I don't understand how she got the tattoo.
Daniel Tougaard I think it just a way for us to know is the same girl because I don't think the man she married and then left is the guy from sleep on the floor
The piano solo at the end makes me want to go back to every key moment of my life and live all parallel possibilities/universes and then continue living in the best one from those.
The narrative order: "Sleep on the Floor", "Angela", "Cleopatra, "Ophelia" (order is also exact opposite of the time release of the videos on TH-cam). After her father's death ("my father in a casket", Cleopatra lyrics), girl is asked by guy to leave town, but she didn't and ends up bearing a child to another guy and of course has regrets ("Angela" lyrics starts with referring to the guy who left town and there's a scene of them in "Angela" video that is taken from the "Sleep on the Floor" clip) and ironically feels free and "home at last" ("Angela" lyrics) when she goes out of the house. In Cleopatra, she's the taxi driver (proof: the same wave tattoo on arm and scar on cheek) and is "divorced" ("Cleopatra" lyrics) (also, the end shows how she didn't enter the house of her ex-husband along with her son) ("Ophelia" lyrics: "got a little paycheck, you gotta move"). Like the Ophelia character in Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the story's about a girl and choices and 'what if's of two worlds (there's always a splitting scene of one's self in all four videos), and, like the Cleopatra character in Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra", she had her times of glory, but that's past now. In the song Ophelia, Wesley (the vocalist) talks of how she has "been on [Wesley's] mind", reflecting on the whole narrative, and thus the production of the brilliantly interconnected songs and video clips. What do you think?
same I was wondering, but maybe: 1. she did got the tatto, under completely different circumstances, and in her imagination it all relates to that first guy and how different her life could've been, or 2. she never got the tatto but she wishes she had, so she imaginates herself with it because it also reminds her of how different her life could've been... After almost 2 years, I finally put the pieces together and finished this puzzle. The Lumineers made this up perfectly. The videos, the story, the signs, everything. This is simply amazing.
The road trip never happened and she used the imaginary experience of it, as a tool to run away from a man, she was only with to become a mother. Once that was accomplished she ran away, and become a sixty year old living in a crappy motel driving a cab.
The best music comes from people who put their heart, sweat, tears, and blood into the lyrics and instruments. You can feel, see and hear their heart, sweat, tears and blood.
When she starts dancing, smiling and just letting go in that parking lot all by herself and the song starts really picking up it hits me right in the feels
She wouldn’t have had to “escape” if she had the balls, to actually go on the road trip. The relationship with curly hair glasses man probably would’ve failed, but the imaginary version of it, wouldn’t be a crutch to use some man she didn’t even love to get pregnant and resources from.
this video makes me so glad I'm not the only one who feels alone. I don't mean lonely in a sense that I don't have a girlfriend or wife or whatever. It's something deeper than that. alone in that true art is loneliness and that the few who are privileged to harmonize with its vibration; live terribly misunderstood lives and are criticized and categorized by society are the only ones who can know true beauty. but while its lonely.. its moving. inspiring. and electric.
It’s freaky how accurate this song actually describes my life. This came out when I was going thru a rough time and as I started commuting to my healing and stopped running from my problems, I kept hearing this song on the radio. Everywhere I’d go until I finally got it, the universe would play this song . It’s like a confirmation that when we start to accept and love ourselves, that’s when we truly are able to come home. Also funny cause my name is Angela and I even drive a green car :)
one of the best feelings is that you could actually feel and listen to a single unified story just by hearing and watching their music videos. it's really rare this days to watch music videos that are creatively put on together like this band do :)
There's something about the lines "The strangers in this town/ They raise you up, just to cut you down" that just gets me every time. Moving to a new place. Falling in love. Making friends. Learning to call a city your own. Lettings this comfort become your norm. And then it all changes. Something about the purity and innocence of new beginnings being eroded. There is no ostentation. There is no decorum. It is just the bittersweet truth of our shifting lives, as we search for anchor.
When you left this town, with your windows down And the wilderness inside Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass 'Til the road and sky align The strangers in this town, They raise you up just to cut you down Oh Angela it's a long time coming And your Volvo lights lit up green and white With the cities on the signs But you held your course to some distant war In the corners of your mind From the second time around The only love I ever found Oh Angela it's a long time coming Home at last Were you safe and warm in your coat of arms With your fingers in a fist Did you hear the notes, all those static codes In the radio abyss? Strangers in this town, They raise you up just to cut you down Oh Angela it's a long time coming Oh Angela spent your whole life running away Home at last Home at last Vacancy, hotel room, lost in me, lost in you Angela, on my knees, I belong, I believe Home at last Home at last Home at last Home at last Home at last Mmm
They are also standing in the background in 3:24 - and in the shot right after, Angela is dancing in the parking lot. So i think that she is reminiscing, that time they were there :)
I guess "the Three Ladies" is a reference to the girl in "sleep on the floor", "Angela" and "Cleopatra" ... and more, they are the same girl. A story of three diferent times of her live.
Angela is such a beautiful music and history, wesley really can tell a history ! Mumford & sons and The Lumineers are the best bands in the history of men kind, for me off course :)
+James G definitely... but i really don't like when people compare mumford and lumineers haha they are super differents! For me mumford is too noisy...
There was a time where I would have shared this opinion. I think the first Mumf album and the first Lumineers album were closer in style and I could understand the link with the way melodies we so punctuating on both albums. Mumford is definitely more noisy now, but I love their 3rd album while the Lumineers have gotten quieter in a really lovely way. Cleopatra is a Sunday morning recovery album. I'd definitely say they're both in the same genre.

When I was young in the 1970s I thought there could never be better music. Now I wish I was young again, I love the music of this generation! This music rocks. It touches your soul.
I was young 20 years ago and envy both your generations. What I can’t understand now is why people stop liking new music. You just listened to the wrong one
yes! that song is seriously under-rated, but its my fave. i love the midway key change. you know, the bit thats like 'fate.... dealt you a tricky hand, no you just laughed alone in your mind...'

Here's the divergent paths: Sleeping on the Floor - Either she "left this town" and went with the guy, got married, got pregnant, OR she never left. The end. Angela - Either she gets back in bed & stays with the guy she had married, OR she leaves and starts a new life. Cleopatra - Either she drops her son off with the father she left, OR is coming home to the man she married because she never left him in the first place. Moral of the story: Go out and have YOUR adventure, because all the paths would've be different had she just stayed home. Truly beautiful.. made my heart swell for life.
Jason She never went on the road trip. She found some random guy she didn’t even love in her hometown and used him to help create and then support a child. She drives a cab and lives in a run down motel. More sad than anything else.
Moral of the story? Uh, try not getting hitched and pregnant and being selfish and abandoning the relationship. That’s 100% selfish. Not sure why that’s “beautiful”. It’s a complete trash story about a selfish person
+ajamico So if you get married and have a kid, you can never leave the marriage, no matter the circumstances, or you are selfish trash? That’s a pretty broad claim...
This song means so much to me. I was in a very toxic relationship for almost 6 years and I used to listen to this and just dream of getting out, of getting anywhere at all. This whole album was my shining light at the end of the tunnel. I used to listen to it all the time, just urging myself to go like "Angela" did. But he had made me dependent on him and it was scary to think of leaving. I'm two months out now and I couldn't be happier. I got my own apartment right down the hall, he moved out of town, I got my old job back and everyone around me has been so happy for me and supportive. But if this song hadn't stuck in the back of my head, always reminding me that one day my life would be different, who knows where I'd be now. Probably still sitting in that apartment with that asshole. But no, now every day I open my eyes and I feel the same freedom and happiness that she feels when she gets out of the car at the Three Ladies Motel. I'm finally free, with a little help from Cleopatra 😉💜
JEREMIAH!!!!!!! YOU ARE A DAMN GOD WITH THE PIANO!!! I LOVE WATCHING YOU PLAY THE PIANO BECAUSE ITS DAMN MAGICAL!!!! And when Wes sings, its like angels singing. You all did an amazing job, I adore your music so much.
"Strangers in this town will raise you up just to cut you down" true about town, schools and sadly, households. Rise above! Believe in who YOU are inside, not what they say♡
BlackSkorpion1991 I wish I could find more songs that gave me goosebumps like this one. I love the euphoria this gives me. I'm on a plane and when we took off, this song made it all the more enjoyable. I love the rush. And goosebumps made it even better
Has anyone but me stopped to realize just how truly beautiful this woman is? It's classic beauty without lot of makeup. It's refreshing. Oh, yeah. One of my favorite songs.
I was in a not-so-great relationship a few years back and I used to wake up in the middle of the night and sneak out of our apartment to go on long wandering drives where I would think about just driving away and never coming back. I found this song right at the very end of that relationship, and I used to listen to it on repeat. It gave me something that I really needed at that time in my life, and I am glad I can come back to it now and remember just how far I have come.
This is the sequel to Sleeping on the Floor, In that video he left, she didn't follow, she met this other guy who got her pregnant and she had a son (now listen to Cleopatra).
GARY J ok, I thought that too, but... the tattoo. If she hadn't gone with him she wouldn't have gotten it. I think she had, but than left him anyway. Thats why in Cleopatra she smiles, when they're got to her taxi-because that memory is precious, and they truly were happy back than. But well, she always runs, and she run this time. Like in Ophelia (although I know lumeeners said it's about fame) she can't stay with someone. So she's leaving while pregnant, and that seemed like a right choice back at the time (she is "at home"-again on the road, again running away), but in Cleopatra she kind of regrets that, and thinking about what would have happened if she had never left. That's why in final scene she is not smiling, not even for a second. It's a close up on her-kind of sad-face. The ending of this video is tricky, though.... What you guys think?!
GARY J: why didn't they just make a movie and everything ends there than taking us here n there guessing which song comes first then that comes sec wtf
Come on man, it's art ! I actually love figuring things out & having a WTF moment when I see something (like her son in the car). But the bigger question is, what's a black guy doing listening to the Lumineers ?? LoL, jk.
I remember one night in 2020 I was listening to throwback jam's on channel 1908 thinking about my truck accident which I was thrown through the windshield and got ran over back in 96 an I was bout ya take my own life an this song came on that channel that it had no business coming on to, it fully caught my attention because the name of the song is my name so I stopped what I was a about to do an listened to this do g an it more than brought happy tears and a strive outta no where to me that have me the strength right dead in there to get kny knee's and pray to Our Father to continue to give me the strength to live on. I now listen to this song everyday, I believe it was meant for me🙌💯
Misspelled some of the words, as I was typing I was tearing up once again cause this came on through a mix that I was listening to, now I downloaded it in my phone, Thank you for sharing an thank you Our Father for giving me another day 💯🙌
I read up on it. Angela, Cleopatra and sleep on the floor was written about a cab driver that the lead singer met in Georgia. Apparently this is a version of her life story.
I wanted to let you guys know that you are one of 5 bands I bought music from in the last 16 years. I'm so tired of commercial garbage music, it's really refreshing to see a hardworking band write and produce their own music that actually sounds good! You put heart and soul into every piece you produce and it shows! I bought the Delux version of "Lumineers" with the DVD and CD to support you guys directly from your website. you're the type of band it be really chill to grab a beer at a pub with and talk about music and the entire production of it. I wish you all many years of success!
I will start off by saying, one morning I was lying in bed listening to the throwbacks on my TV which this song had no business being on that channel do to it's not that type of music, I instantly started to cry, the foot of my bed started shaking.. back in 96 my ex tried to kill me , our daughter and himself, he flipped a Bronco ll 7 x on the 4th flip I took off my seatbelt to save our which was only 3 wks old. I ended up going through the windshield.. it was one long journey of healing from my injuries. This song gives me the strength to continue to carry on. I thank Our Father for watching over us all that day, we are all still here.. maybe someday the right one will come an as the song state's, it's a long time coming. Thanks for the song, it means a lot to my soul 💯🫶🙌
I've actually listened to The Lumineers a few times before, but I never really paid much attention to them as much as I am now. The guy I believe I am in love with brought me here. He loves The Lumineers and I just want to understand what it is that he loves so much. Now I understand, The Lumineers are so pure. They take heartwarming but also heartbreaking, devastating, yet real situations from people and create them into art. I... I am in awe of both The Lumineers and my guy.
I remember hearing this live at key arena. We walked in as this song was being played, I wanted to see the Lumineers whole show so hearing them singing as we walked in was rough. I remember hearing "oh angela it's a long time coming..'drum thump' home at last" It is hard to explain the feeling, but hearing this song live is amazing.
The largely lost art of music videos is not lost on the Lumineers, who tell a story in their lyrics, complemented by their simplistic yet powerful portrayal of words in action. Two sides of the same coin, that complement each other wonderfully. The Piano solo at the end is simply icing on the cake, a beautiful ending to an inspiring story.
I agree. Every video is a masterpiece, thought provoking, emotion evoking, and always memorable. Their songs and videos allow the listener, regardless of age, to become part of the story. I love them 💘🦋
I personally disagree. They have songwriters and they aren't very good. Their vocalist sounds very whiny and the guitar player and drummer are of the level of a middle school student. I wish a more skilled set of people were chosen to play these songs
Spoiler about the possible story meaning of "Sleep On The Floor", "Angela" and "Cleopatra". /!\ /!\ In my opinion in "Sleep On The Floor" she cries for her late husband, who's the one who come to whisper to her ears. There is a part of her who stays at the funeral and the other part, her mind, who decide to wander to live again their story. She did got that tattoo, it was not a part of a dream. She wakes up on the carpet, were they first slept on when they got the house, but when she awakes she realizes he is gone forever and all she has left are her memories. In "Angela" she is, years later, with her new husband and about to have their baby. A part of her wants to leave, like in the good old days, but finally she decides to come back. She is going to be a mother. The Three Ladies are the same person, except that one represent the past, the second the present, and Cleopatra her future. In "Cleopatra" she has grow old, the passengers in the back seat, including her two younger self are her memories. Finally she drive back her son, but as she split it seems that she is divorced now. The has lost the love of her life and she is alone again, like at the end of "Sleep On The Floor". I don't know if "Ophelia" is connected to the story, but if it was I would probably think that it is somehow the story of her late first husband, as at the end of the video a car rushes in front of the man who is dancing on the middle of the road. I know it is not the same character, it was just a theory about the "Ophelia" part.

This is Cleopatra. I think that this album tells us a story about this beautiful woman's/girl's life from back to begining; first we see Cleopatra, the older version of her, who drives her taxi and loves her son, loves him more than anything on this world. Then we see Angela, this beautiful woman, who is pregnant with her/Cleopatra's son, and shows us the time just before she left her child's father. She decided to leave him, to start her story from zero and open a new page, with her, her son and their little, yellow taxi. These are just mine thoughts, they aren't meant to offend or hurt someone.
And also, what I really love about The Lumineers, it's that their songs are so imaginative, so day-dreamy and filled with these beautiful stories. Thank you, guys. Thank you for making this world a better place with your music.
My art teacher plays this album so much.. recently a tragedy happened and two of our classmates died. This music has been so therapeutic. Thank you for this.
So happy, that this song kept me going when it came to getting away, starting over, fighting for my rights as a parent. There's so much we go through, but you can make it, if you just believe, work really hard, and have amazing people by your side.
I want to know what the magic in that room was like. Standing in that space, an intimate, closed in crowd, swaying and holding drinks and each other as this song went over them. The lights dim as the band plays the tune like, “Come closer. We’ve got a story here.” I’d have chills being there.
I love how the videoclips all connect together, but are time incoherent as well. Makes you realize that it doesn't matter whether it's 2020, 2000 or 1980 - people are solving the same problems, with the same heartache, pain, happiness and love. Kind of satisfying and makes it so you can feel your actual life.

Yes, time is a healer but it takes a man to know it
'The three ladies motel', Ophelia, Cleopatra, Angela. Love it.
What about Elouis

Or the three fates from Greek mythology

Did you notice the name of the Motel is "Three ladies" ?

I really like it too

I'd happily listen to a full length song of that piano tune!!

one of the best feelings is that you could actually feel and listen to a single unified story just by hearing and watching their music videos. it's really rare this days to watch music videos that are creatively put on together like this band do :)

I really love this song
There's something about the lines "The strangers in this town/ They raise you up, just to cut you down" that just gets me every time. Moving to a new place. Falling in love. Making friends. Learning to call a city your own. Lettings this comfort become your norm. And then it all changes. Something about the purity and innocence of new beginnings being eroded. There is no ostentation. There is no decorum. It is just the bittersweet truth of our shifting lives, as we search for anchor.
Your words are like poetry, well said
Beautifully said ❤
When you left this town, with your windows down
And the wilderness inside
Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass
'Til the road and sky align
The strangers in this town,
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh Angela it's a long time coming
And your Volvo lights lit up green and white
With the cities on the signs
But you held your course to some distant war
In the corners of your mind
From the second time around
The only love I ever found
Oh Angela it's a long time coming
Home at last
Were you safe and warm in your coat of arms
With your fingers in a fist
Did you hear the notes, all those static codes
In the radio abyss?
Strangers in this town,
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh Angela it's a long time coming
Oh Angela spent your whole life running away

Felony Crime the tattoo on her arm!
I thought the exact same thing!
Luciano Montenegro what if Ophelia is if from the guys perspective on sleep on the floor?
Angela is such a beautiful music and history, wesley really can tell a history ! Mumford & sons and The Lumineers are the best bands in the history of men kind, for me off course :)
I agree but also would put The Head And The Heart up there too.
+James G definitely... but i really don't like when people compare mumford and lumineers haha they are super differents! For me mumford is too noisy...
does anyone share this opinion? :)
and they save our music generation

Here's the divergent paths:
Sleeping on the Floor - Either she "left this town" and went with the guy, got married, got pregnant, OR she never left.
Jason woaw that's true and amazing
Also, My Eyes is apart of the story... it's her as an old woman and reflecting upon her life before she passes away. It really is a beautiful story
3:50 onwards is just magical. Love piano music
It's another song on the album - Patience. It's the perfect follow up to My Eyes. I'm ready for a video for that song.

This is one of the most beautiful songs my ears has ever had the pleasure of hearing, along with Patience and Sleep on the Floor.
"Strangers in this town will raise you up just to cut you down" true about town, schools and sadly, households. Rise above! Believe in who YOU are inside, not what they say♡

The Lumineers are the best band in the world. Their songwriting is seriously underrated and they have a sincere appreciation for their fans!
if you dont get goosebumps when he sings "home at laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast" you are dead inside.

Has anyone but me stopped to realize just how truly beautiful this woman is? It's classic beauty without lot of makeup. It's refreshing. Oh, yeah. One of my favorite songs.
She's stunning!
Loved these songs forever, found out they are connected. Crying. Crying. Crying.
What a beautiful song. His voice just draws you in.
also am I the only one that noticed the motel is called "the three ladies" - i'd say that's Angela, Ophelia, and Cleopatra right there!
The three ladies could also be a reference to the Fates, who number three and control the destiny of all mortals...
good point!
This stuck out immediately to me too. I was going to point it out, but you beat me to the punch three months ago.
"The Three Ladies" References the three different points in Cleopatra's life as seen in Sleeping on the Floor, Angela, and Cleopatra.
I mean you have Darlene too, and idk if Angie counts
This is the sequel to Sleeping on the Floor, In that video he left, she didn't follow, she met this other guy who got her pregnant and she had a son (now listen to Cleopatra).
GARY J is sleeping on the floor, before or after this video?
Before !
LoL, jk.
My dad used to listen to this song all the time before he passed and this brought me to tears.
Who else here knows exactly how that early morning air and sky feels when she gets out of her car at the motel?
Crisp and free.

For three years I listen to this song on the best and worst days, this is my favorite song, it sets me free and makes me sure I'm on my way home.
What an incredible album from start to finish.
I love how the piano doesn't stop for so long. Such a beautiful instrument without a doubt.
Has anyone noticed THE THREE LADIES motel? Cleopatra, Angela and the girl from Sleep on the Floor!!! Mindblowing! The Lumineers are incredible!!
I still think this is the best song Lumineers ever wrote. It moves me even though I've seen it so many times. It's so comforting.
I love The Lumineers!
They do the most beautiful and meaningful love songs ever!
"Angela you spent all life running..'' and "Home at last" have such a deep meaning! Love this song!! ❤️
I can't wait to see y'all this weekend !!!!
I'm seeing them this Saturday and I'm so excited!

*My favorite song from the new album!!*

Every video they make is a masterpiece!!!!!
You could say they are quite... Luminating?
that's your opinion
Joanna haily i came from Cleopatra. So cute
Spoiler about the possible story meaning of "Sleep On The Floor", "Angela" and "Cleopatra".
/!\ /!\
In my opinion in "Sleep On The
Floor" she cries for her late husband, who's the one who come to whisper
to her ears. There is a part of her who stays at the funeral and the
other part, her mind, who decide to wander to live again their story.
She did got that tattoo, it was not a part of a dream. She wakes up on
the carpet, were they first slept on when they got the house, but when
she awakes she realizes he is gone forever and all she has left are her
memories. In "Angela" she is, years later, with her new husband and
about to have their baby. A part of her wants to leave, like in the good
old days, but finally she decides to come back. She is going to be a
mother. The Three Ladies are the same person, except that one represent
the past, the second the present, and Cleopatra her future. In
"Cleopatra" she has grow old, the passengers in the back seat, including
her two younger self are her memories. Finally she drive back her son,
but as she split it seems that she is divorced now. The has lost the
love of her life and she is alone again, like at the end of "Sleep On
The Floor".
I don't know if "Ophelia" is connected to the story, but if it was I would probably think that it is somehow the story of her late first husband, as at the end of the video a car rushes in front of the man who is dancing on the middle of the road. I know it is not the same character, it was just a theory about the "Ophelia" part.
Most amazing videos ever...

The name of the motel is “THE THREE LADIES” omfgggg
It makes me cry when I look at it that way

But she's the Taxi-Lady/Cleopatra's first customer... If you look closely this video ends where Cleopatra begins.
a boy has no name and finally it s angela, when she was young... you re right
Just watch the videos in reverse order. Sleep on the floor, Angela, Cleopatra. It's the same person. :)
I think Sleep On The Floor continues the reverse story as well
That outro gives me chills everytime. Nothing more to add

if you look at the crowd you can see the couple from the the sleep on the floor music video. i know it's all connected but i just noticed that

bmapel and the tattoo on the taxi drivers arm is the same as the one she got in the sleep on the floor music video
So happy, that this song kept me going when it came to getting away, starting over, fighting for my rights as a parent. There's so much we go through, but you can make it, if you just believe, work really hard, and have amazing people by your side.
i love the way in what these guys connect their histories... just charming
I want to know what the magic in that room was like. Standing in that space, an intimate, closed in crowd, swaying and holding drinks and each other as this song went over them. The lights dim as the band plays the tune like, “Come closer. We’ve got a story here.” I’d have chills being there.
It's the same girl from sleep on the floor, she has the same wave tattoo on her arm you can see it at 2:24
