    Thank you for the great films of wars past. This shows us the spirit that our fighting forces had as well as the terrible hardships they faced. It is without a doubt we owe our freedom to these great men and women. I hope you will continue to post others films of days past. Again thank you for the hard work and dedications. May GOD watch over and bless you and your family always!

    Gliders were unreal - took massive balls to do any of that.

      A glider is an airplane that has already been shot down.

    The American anti aircraft shells were equipped with proximity fuses which greatly enhanced their effectiveness. No longer did the gun crews have to preset the shell for distance. Japanese pilots that managed to survive and return were half crazed at the deadlyness of the gunfire. Only one ship was damaged not seriously though. Japan lost the majority of their experienced pilots.

    34:14 The amount of fire coming off that ship is incredible.

      I saw an interview of a soldier in the D-day invasion, who spoke of how loud the firing was from the battleships. He said one ship near him seemed especially volatile, and would lurch his ship out of the water when she fired. He remembered it was the USS TEXAS. That caught my attention, because I am from Houston and have toured the TEXAS many times since I was young. She is anchored about 12 miles from my home, and I never miss an opportunity to go see her!

    17:00 (ish) Troops entered Mayenne, France on August 6th. 1944. The allied invasion of Avranche failed. And on that same exact day the Deportation of 70,000 Jews from Lodz Poland to Auschwitz began.
    Exactly one year later, to the day, on August 6th. 1945 the first of two Atomic Bombs would be dropped on the Japanese City of Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9th., the second would be dropped on Nagasaki.
    Japan would surrender one day later.

    At 15:53 note one of three U.S. soldier wearing camouflage in France. Even the boots may be of a camouflage pattern. Experimental?

    • @4Bobay
      @4Bobay ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The uniform was the US "Duck" camouflage. It came in both a one and two piece version. It was worn for a short time in the summer of 1944 in France by a small handful of units. However in combat, it was too close to German SS camo.

    • @4Bobay

      The duck camo was popular in the Pacific theater among US Marine units.

    Interesting that the Germans saved the radios so that they could be given back to the French civilians.

    • @barthoving2053
      @barthoving2053 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The local French authorities collected the radios. Apparently the radio were never handed over to the Germans, or they never came around to collect them.

    why are gliders used vs. paratroopers? It seems like every glider crashes?

    • @barthoving2053
      @barthoving2053 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To bring in equipment. And the advantage of a glider full of troops is that they do not scatter like the paratroopers. Look at the big H on the helmets of the paratroopers at 4:40. That to make it easy to find their unit. Accidents of drops by parachutes were also common. After the drop troops might spent hours to find their unit. While a platoon in a glider can get in to action quickly. See the attack on Pegasus bridge. And for dramatic purposes perhaps maybe only the gliders that crashed are shown.

    WWII DID NOT OCCUR IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, b/c that's where the people who OWN this planet live and play (European royalty whose vast fortunes span centuries).

    • @skydiverclassc2031
      @skydiverclassc2031 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A quick bit of research shows that the Germans did occupy the south of France, commonly called Vichy France, after the Allies landed in North Africa. The locals would probably dispute your claim, then, that WWII did not occur in the south. Additionally, after the landings at Normandy, the south of France was strategically unimportant, as the drive was to the north, through Paris and on to Germany.

      True but the one thing we never had to learn to do was beg for help like you brits had to. Polish 303 squadron had the highest kill rate of the r.a.f. beg the French pilots, Canadian pilots and beg the United states for everything. The United States saved Britain with lend lease. 85 % of Britain's food during the war came from the United States. 92% of its petroleum products came from the United States. 96 % of its raw materials to make war goods and finished war goods came from the United states.

      Americans are too often completely ignorant to history. Yes the Americans were a powerhouse that goes without saying. However the British were fighting for 3 years before the first GI saw combat. The civilian population was being actively bombed from the air,an experience no american civilian experienced except for at Pearl Harbour, Wake island, and Dutch harbour.

    These bombs were not precision guided back in those days, military just had to hope they hit at the aimed target, heartbreaking to think of all the innocents affected by this. There were hundreds of millions killed during that war, the next one will be 10 times worse.
