On the subject of Band Of Gypsys, that album was put out to comply with contract agreements stemming from Jimi’s previous contract signings prior to his time with Chas Chandler managing. He owed Capitol an album (even though his regular record label was Reprise) so they put out Band Of Gypsys as a quickie live album with all new material to get past that release requirement. Damn fine album considering the circumstances for its release. Other live album I would put in the should have been a double album is Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live.

I would love to see more people acknowledge Canadian band April Wine. I’m from Toronto and April Wine was my first concert. Their live album from 1974, just called April Wine Live, kicks ass with heavy guitars and an amazing drum solo from Jerry Mercer. The songs included are: Mama It’s True; Druthers; Cat’s Claw; I’m On Fire For You Baby; The Band Has Just Begun; Good Fibes; Just Like That; You Could Have Been A Lady. Again, if your not familiar with this band and you wanna crank up the raw energy of guitars, this album kicks ass!
"Energy is contagious Enthusiasm spreads"...both Pete and Mike have some Chemistry going and having Mike on the program is not only amazing but highly energetic. Keep it going guys.good show. 👍
I've had a high quality bootleg version of Maiden Japan from Nagoya, Japan - May 23, 1981 with Di'Anno on vocals for years. It has 17 tracks (every song from the first 2 Maiden albums) and should have been officially released, as opposed to the short EP that came out in its place.
Mountain Live "The Road Goes Ever On" plus those two Crimson albums mentioned at the end: "Earthbound" & "USA" Oh, and "The Mothers - Fillmore East June 1971"
What can you say here? Portnoy and Pete talking music and showcasing albums. This is why I do not have Cable TV anymore. This is the new way to watch. Has been for a while now. The internet and new internet coming in the future is the way in my opinion. I love coming home after a hard days work and watching these types of things. Really Great stuff guys!

A few albums that come to mind are: Soft Machine - Noisette One of the greatest live albums, Noisette was cut to a single cd disk, leaving out the performance of Facelift, which had segments that were lifted and included for the version on Third. Noisette is a fantastic document of the band at their loudest, featuring the band in quintet form. In its released form, it would likely have been a double album, but with Facelift, it certainly would've been a triple album. 801 - 801 Live The official release was a great show, however, more songs would've been welcome, as they performed a number of other songs as a unit, including additional Eno tunes. More Quiet Sun songs would've filled out a nice double album as well. Guided By Voices - For All Good Kids Again another performance that had songs cherry picked for a single disk release. The full 44 setlist would've created a nice, full, probably triple disk release. This performance was recorded at Maxwell's in Hoboken during the band's first classic period.
so much to say...great video...i'm older than you two and i wish i could remember my tickets from back in the day...played alot of clubs back then...saw the stones at the garden, zeppelin at the garden, jethro tull, new york dolls, velvet underground, saw both of your t-shirt bands, pink floyd and triumph, gentle giant, rush, mott the hoople, queen, so many more...do you guys remember a club called february's....loved that place...also hammerheads....one of my favorite live albums was a single album...free 'live'....and by the way...priest came out with 'unleashed in the east' as a single vinyl album in america, but as a double vinyl import called 'priest in the east at the same time'...whitesnake did the same thing with 'live in the heart of the city'...i got both the double vinyl albums back then at bleecker bob's....import albums seemed to often be doubles where the u.s. just put out single versions....but as long as it's good...be well guys...peace always...rocky
I grew up in a town 30 minutes south of Buffalo, and I'm super stoked to see Talas make this list! I saw them open up for Iron Maiden in Buffalo on the Powerslave tour (I was too young to go to clubs and bars then).
Pete has mentioned on so many shows how the Frank Marino Live album should've been a double album I thought for sure it would've made this list. It would be tops in mine.
@@ronforeman2556 Driving Wheel is missed on that album big time, I'd also love to have seen Eight Days On The Road, Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie and Don't Run Me Down included.
Both episodes with Mike have been superb. Great choices so I've chosen a few others. Would love to have a chat about great live bands/artists that never released a live album. 1. BB King Live at the Regal (all his single live albums were great but this is the best) 2. James Brown - Live at the Appolo 3. Muddy Waters - Live at Newport 4.. Zappa/Mothers - Fillmore East 5. Randy Newman - Live
Great once again. Thx to you two, Pete & Mike ! But I would like to add Blackfoot's "HIghway Song - live" from 1982 (recorded at Hammersmith, I guess). The band at their absolute peak, fantastic vocals by Rick Medlocke, brilliant twin guitars (Medlocke and Charlie Hargrett), and superb drumming by Jakson 'Thunderfoot' Spires (R.I.P.). And with the quintessential version of "Highway Song" on it. An absolute gem of a live album IMHO. Should have been a double as well.
Great episode! Thanks to Mike Portnoy for taking time for SoT again and I hope you two will have a chance to do some other shows together. Great chemistry between the two of you. My choices were well represented by both co-captains. My top spot is right with Mike - Live At Leeds. I bought the album upon release and always wanted more. The day of re-issues and anniversary sets have allowed for that. But it would still have been my top choice since it does capture the energy of The Who that, as Pete stated, was never really captured on a studio recording. Then thanks to you, Pete, for a shout out to Elton John's 11/17/70 - or 17/11/70 as is known across the pond and elsewhere. One of my favorite albums and since I saw Elton live within a few months of this date and the album captures what a piano, bass and drum trio could do - unbelievable. There is a release of the album that has the full show of that night but it is damned difficult to find and afford. TH-cam had it at one point. Some of the missing songs are a little off but that is the purpose of a live set - catching the essence of the performance. Thanks again, Mike, for giving some time to SoT and its viewers and thanks as always to Pete for maintaining such a great quality of shows for all of us.
SRV and Double Trouble - In the Beginning ... I like the raw nature of that record, seems like Stevie could've easily played for at least another half-hour playing a few more songs off the first album plus more blues covers.
great topic. Mine are 1. USA (King Crimson) 2. Night After Night (UK) 3. Made In Europe (Deep Purple) 4. No Sleep Til Hammersmith (Motorhead) 5. Live In The Air Age (Be Bop Deluxe) 6. Jeff Beck Live with the Jan Hammer Group 7. Viva! Roxy Music 8. Live Seeds (Nick Cave & Bad Seeds) 9. Genesis Live 10. Live In The Heart of The City (Whitesnake)
I thought it was pretty cool when Mike mentioned the Penny Arcade in Rochester NY. It was basically our version of the Chance. I saw Talas there many times. Along with many other big names.
Just a note. Heaven and Hell was recorded. It was the b-side of Summertime Blues. It was also on their Rarities/Missing albums. But Live at Leeds is my number one pick. How long did we go before we (legally) got the full Tommy concert?
Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma" could qualify as a single since the 2nd record is a studio recording. Also ZZ Top's "Fandango", is half a single live lp, the other half studio.
Al Di Meola-Tour De Force Live Duran Duran-Arena U2-Under A Blood Red Sky Hall & Oates-Live At The Apollo Jackson Browne-Running On Empty Charlie Daniels-ANY of the Volunteer Jam releases should have been double albums
Glad to see Pete mention Elton’s 11-17-70. Another 70’s single live album from Elton John was Here and There. This had the best version of Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding. It was later expanded to a double length album, with a guest appearance by John Lennon. Another single live album that was later expanded to a double length album was Whitesnake’s Live...In the Heart of the City.
Top man for getting Mike Portnoy back on for another round, I've always felt King Crimson USA should have been a double album because it's such a fantastic live performance that really captured the 72-74 lineup at the top of their game. Excellent show Pete and keep up the good work as always
The Guess Who, my hometown band, Live at the Paramount. Fantastic album, a single. Going by memory, ’73, or around there. No, ’72, I looked it up. “Running Back to Saskatoon” was a big hit on the radio. I heard that all the time on radio back then. I was a teen and bought the album, my first Guess Who.
Just received the expanded edition in the mail. A great live set that's double-plus good with the six extra tracks and liner notes by band biographer John Einarson..
Motorhead - No Sleep Pat Travers Band - Go For What You Know Whitesnake - Live In The Heart Of The City Foghat - Live AC/DC - If You Want Blood Judas Priest - Unleashed Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed
Same, but mine had a WHITE 7" vinyl single with Beyond The Realms Of Death, Hell Bent For Leather and Delivering The Goods Awesome album, still. Criminal that it was released as a single album, especially when you consider all the bonus material that has been added over the years since.
Did anyone have the Johnny Winter double album on vinyl where side 4 was totally blank but it had the traditional track marks as if there were 4 tracks but each one was silent. It was called Second Winter. On the Priest live album...in the UK when it was released in 79 there was a free EP with the first so many thousand copies with the live versions of Rock Forever, Starbreaker and Beyond The Realms Of Death

Priest - Unleashed in the East
Mahogany Rush - Live
Riot - Live
Foghat - Live
Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan
Alice Cooper - The Alice Cooper Show
Rory Gallagher - Stage Struck
38 Special - Live in Texas
On the subject of Band Of Gypsys, that album was put out to comply with contract agreements stemming from Jimi’s previous contract signings prior to his time with Chas Chandler managing. He owed Capitol an album (even though his regular record label was Reprise) so they put out Band Of Gypsys as a quickie live album with all new material to get past that release requirement. Damn fine album considering the circumstances for its release.
Other live album I would put in the should have been a double album is Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live.
Could listen to you two all night. What a nice guy Mike is. Thank you both.

The Trower, Foghat, and BOC albums immediately came to mind.
"Energy is contagious
Enthusiasm spreads"...both Pete and Mike have some Chemistry going and having Mike on the program is not only amazing but highly energetic.
It was released in a limited full length version by their official fan club but agree its incredible
I see Mike Portnoy and I click, keep these videos coming boys.
Foghat Live
Haven't watched yet. AC/DC If you want blood comes to mind immediately. Edit: watching now, love Mike's Animals t-shirt.
My favorite Floyd record...and one of my favorite concerts...
I actually edited the missing songs from the Glasgow set to create the complete concert for the AC/DC's If You Want Blood!
Mountain Live "The Road Goes Ever On"
plus those two Crimson albums mentioned at the end: "Earthbound" & "USA"
Oh, and "The Mothers - Fillmore East June 1971"
Yes! MOUNTAIN live was only one slab. Good call!
Great conversation - thanks, guys. Lots of fantastic picks here. I'd add Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live.
A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
What can you say here? Portnoy and Pete talking music and showcasing albums. This is why I do not have Cable TV anymore. This is the new way to watch. Has been for a while now. The internet and new internet coming in the future is the way in my opinion. I love coming home after a hard days work and watching these types of things. Really Great stuff guys!
Welcome back, Mike!
Rt ,love that Mike is literally an encyclopedia of band knowledge ! Give me hope;)
My favorite single live album is *Slade on Stage*. I saw them on that tour and it was one of the best live shows I ever saw. They really brought the house down!
Great show!
No Sleep Til Hammersmith was recorded mainly at Newcastle City Hall with a couple of tracks from Leeds.
Just from my collection-BTO-Japan Tour,Blackfoot-Highway Song Live,Roy Buchanan-Live Stock,Cheap Trick-Live At Budokan,Crack The Sky-Live Sky,Derringer-Live,Rory Gallagher-Stagestruck,Sammy Hagar-All Night Long,Mahogany Rush-Live,Mott The Hoople-Live,PFM-Cook,SAHB-Live,Slade-Alive,Y&T-Open FireWarren Zevon-Stand In The Fire.
You don't get two more passionate, genuine music lovers than these two. Great show. Thanks!
ELP: Pictures at an exhibition
King Crimson: USA
Zappa: Live at the Filmore
Pink Floyd's 4th side of Ummagumma
Tull's 4th side of Living in the Past
Mahavishnu: Between Nothingness and Eternity
A few albums that come to mind are:
Soft Machine - Noisette
One of the greatest live albums, Noisette was cut to a single cd disk, leaving out the performance of Facelift, which had segments that were lifted and included for the version on Third. Noisette is a fantastic document of the band at their loudest, featuring the band in quintet form.
In its released form, it would likely have been a double album, but with Facelift, it certainly would've been a triple album.
801 - 801 Live
The official release was a great show, however, more songs would've been welcome, as they performed a number of other songs as a unit, including additional Eno tunes. More Quiet Sun songs would've filled out a nice double album as well.
Guided By Voices - For All Good Kids
Again another performance that had songs cherry picked for a single disk release. The full 44 setlist would've created a nice, full, probably triple disk release. This performance was recorded at Maxwell's in Hoboken during the band's first classic period.
The first album that instantly popped into my head was Pat Travers Band -Go For What You Know. I don't believe there is an expanded version either.
so much to say...great video...i'm older than you two and i wish i could remember my tickets from back in the day...played alot of clubs back then...saw the stones at the garden, zeppelin at the garden, jethro tull, new york dolls, velvet underground, saw both of your t-shirt bands, pink floyd and triumph, gentle giant, rush, mott the hoople, queen, so many more...do you guys remember a club called february's....loved that place...also hammerheads....one of my favorite live albums was a single album...free 'live'....and by the way...priest came out with 'unleashed in the east' as a single vinyl album in america, but as a double vinyl import called 'priest in the east at the same time'...whitesnake did the same thing with 'live in the heart of the city'...i got both the double vinyl albums back then at bleecker bob's....import albums seemed to often be doubles where the u.s. just put out single versions....but as long as it's good...be well guys...peace always...rocky
I grew up in a town 30 minutes south of Buffalo, and I'm super stoked to see Talas make this list! I saw them open up for Iron Maiden in Buffalo on the Powerslave tour (I was too young to go to clubs and bars then).
SAXON "The Eagle Has Landed" 1982. Probably the greatest drinking album ever recorded, and one of the fastest.
Foghat Live.
Yes it's great
Between your album ranking videos and Mike's vinyl collection videos I have discovered SO many new bands! THANK YOU BOTH!!!
Surprised Pete didn't mention Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live 1978.
Pete has mentioned on so many shows how the Frank Marino Live album should've been a double album I thought for sure it would've made this list. It would be tops in mine.
@@jydymyyyr9630 A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
@@seaoftranquilityprog You're forgiven...
My #1 pick is Foghat Live, 6 songs is just too short. They were on fire then, would love if this got expanded one day.
It's inexplicable that Foghat didn't at least include "Driving Wheel" on that live album in place of the Chuck Berry cover, "Maybellene."
@@ronforeman2556 Driving Wheel is missed on that album big time, I'd also love to have seen Eight Days On The Road, Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie and Don't Run Me Down included.
First album that comes to my mind is Some Enchanted Evening. I love it but I wish there were more Spectres Songs on it.
Both episodes with Mike have been superb. Great choices so I've chosen a few others. Would love to have a chat about great live bands/artists that never released a live album.
1. BB King Live at the Regal (all his single live albums were great but this is the best)
2. James Brown - Live at the Appolo
3. Muddy Waters - Live at Newport
4.. Zappa/Mothers - Fillmore East
5. Randy Newman - Live
Blue Oyster Cult-Some enchanted evening, for sure!
Can't believe I forgot that one. When Pete mentioned this video was coming it was one of the first I thought of...and then left it off my list.
Don't forget Mott The Hoople Live - only a single. Love your interaction with Mike!
NASSAU COLISEUM, KISS JUDAS PRIEST.... 79. I WAS THERE TOO. FIRST CONCERT.
Yeah..ZZ Top should have put out a double live album in the 70's...
I never got the whole half live/half studio thing. Seems like contract fulfillment to me
Al Di Meola-Tour De Force Live
Duran Duran-Arena
U2-Under A Blood Red Sky
Hall & Oates-Live At The Apollo
Jackson Browne-Running On Empty
Charlie Daniels-ANY of the Volunteer Jam releases should have been double albums
Great show, Mike is so great - drummers have the "best ears"!
I think Cheap Trick's live at Budokan could have worked well as a double.
Cheers guys.
U.K "Night After Night"... Excellent pick, Mike! Thanks for sneaking that one in.
Top man for getting Mike Portnoy back on for another round, I've always felt King Crimson USA should have been a double album because it's such a fantastic live performance that really captured the 72-74 lineup at the top of their game. Excellent show Pete and keep up the good work as always
Roxy Music - Viva! Roxy Music - 1976
These guys seem like they could become good friends. They have many things in common. As a viewer, this is kind of a refreshing thing to see.
Motorhead - No Sleep
Pat Travers Band - Go For What You Know
Whitesnake - Live In The Heart Of The City
Foghat - Live
AC/DC - If You Want Blood
Judas Priest - Unleashed
Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed
There was a UK of "unleashed.." version with an EP with "beyond the realms.." which is THE version.
Always great to see Mike as the guest.
So glad to see my first album on the list, Foghat Live! Great topic and show guys.
When i bought unleashed in the east on the day of release the album came with a clear vinyl 7 single with extra tracks..!!
My gson turns 13 this wk, he loves watching Mike on the hello kitty set as well as real set ;)& I love that Mike is still so much of a fan! This is fast becoming a binge watch channel thanks Pete! AC/DC /Travers Aragon chgo 1of my fav cncrts.
So glad there is love for Robin Trower Live, a cracking album
Nina Simone - Black Gold 1970 (recorded in '69).
Albert King - Wednesday Night in San Francisco 1990 (recorded in '68).
Taste - Live at the Isle of Wight 1971 (recorded in '70).
Earthless - Live in Guadalest 2013 (recorded in '09).
Ten Years After - Undead (1968).
Cool episode. It would be cool getting Mike involved in the perfect albums series.
The 2 that come to mind:
Judas Priest- Unleashed In The East
Motorhead- No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith
I saw UFO play that Strangers set in 78, in the UK in front of about 300 people in a rock club.
