Yo Thiago I remember you from like 10-12 years ago when we were all in high school making DT cover videos 😂 that was when Portnoy had just left. What a time to be alive.
I'm super optimistic about it too (though I absolutely adored Mangini) but I hope Portnoy keeps things going with Neil Morse. That was his most inspired drumming outside of DT
Just imagine back at 2021, how hard it would had been to endure the anxiety of secretly knowing that two years later, Mike P. would be returning to Dream Theater??? It was only thirteen years of hard wait for this moment to become a reality! Thank you for sharing, dear Jordan! Such a pleasure!
I LOVE me some Mangini, but I'm so happy for Portnoy his fans, and the music world as a whole. Seriously, I've wanted to experience Mangini with DT since 2002, and never thought it would ever happen. He exceeded all expectations, and became an even bigger icon for me. And with all that support, that still unyeilds - I can also be exceedingly happy to see Portnoy return. I've had my core band together since I was 15 in 1992. If anyone had ever held my throne, I'd have been more than happy to come home. Plus, who can deny the excellence of Portnoy's drumming? He pours passion, exuberance, joy, and imagination. He had STRONG identity, his "sonic fingerprint" is unmistakable - it IS integral the Dream Theater sound and tone. To see that come back takes me back to that spring I started my band with Pull Me Under! So congratulations to Mike Mangini for an incredible run, and managing to fill the shoes of such an iconic personality, and talent. You are a bonafied legend and genius. And congratulations to Mike Portnoy for the opportunity to reprise the role that made you famous, and entertained, inspired, enthralled, and transported us fans. You have given us so much through the years, and remain selfless. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new music with you back in the saddle! Best wishes, Mike M, and Mike P! We love ya! Dan

welcome mike portnoy. I'm so happy you're back with the Dream Theater family. Thank you Mike Mangini. 10 years of intelligent work with Dream Theater. always healthy for all of you. ❤
For the last 13 years, I have patiently waited for this. No disrespect to Mike Mangini; he was great with you guys in DT, but to tell the truth, after listening to every album released with him, I had to go back and listen to your old albums with MP because they feel like home and have everything in them. I could hear the chemistry with MP, not with MM, even though we all know he is a monster drummer. The only album with MM that satisfied me was 'A Dramatic Turn of Events.' That album felt different and new, yet not so far from what DT is. That was the best album for me with MM. Thank you, MM, for the music with DT. Welcome back, MP! ❤️
I really loved Mangini's contributions. Something I had wanted to hear for years. He has been on my personal Mt. Rushmore of drummers since 1999. But I'm so happy to see Mike Portnoy back in his band. It would really be an honor to be asked to return if my first band had ever replaced me (they haven't since we were kids in 1992). He's got that raw, aggressive power combined with beautiful inflections and touch. Never a dull moment with the ever exciting, Mike Portnoy!
Such a great interview. Fascinating to see the early rekindling in place to what would become a DT return. Impressed with MP's newfound diplomacy over the past 10+ years outside of DT. Hopefully that will lead to a successful return!
Yes for sure. I think he learned a lot by taking on all these different roles in the hundereds of bands he created over his time away from DT. I was hoping for his return immediately when i heared John Petruccis' solo album. The chemistry Mike and John have is just out of this world.
Also about 41:00 talking about how Mike's changed since 2010 I think is really important, because I see people say they're worried about Mike being back like he's the same controlling person he once was. But like you can see he needed his stuff in the 2010s to get that perspective and it shows here - and this clip is nearly 3 years old now!
It’s a beautiful time to be a dream theater fan. The most beautiful time, in fact, almost 40 years later. Aside from the fact that this was the best move creatively, bringing Mike back is also a smart business decision! Love you guys, so glad Portnoy is back

Live at Budokan is a pure gold . LT3 is an awesome album imo . The passage of time has an incredibly beautiful solo by JR and is one of my favorite songs by JR /MP/JP in a long time. I am positive Portnoy will bring back the quintessential DT.
I really hope MP re-joining Dream Theater will get some old-school juices flowing. DT was my favorite band in the 90s, but the last album that I truly loved was 6DOIT. After that, it got too Pantera/Metallica-ish for me. Not that those albums weren't stellar, but the classic DT sound wasn't there for me. ADTOE hit the spot in a few songs, though. So, I really hope we get some more proggy melody and less metal chugging.
This conversation was extremely insightful to this day and age. There are so many things to pick out that make sense now. Jordan was very honest about a lot of things here... Also Mike, you entering the vst world....that's a lot $$$ going your way. I don't know what happened with that idea, but somebody needs to get on this.

OK so, Portnoy is back.. Next step? Please add a permanent backup choir for James. They'll handle the high notes, in harmony with lower adjusted parts from James. It HAS to be done. James can't be replaced as he's like a soul for the band. But something has to be done or the poor guy will only harm his vocal cords more. EDIT: By 'backup choir' I just mean a few backing vocalists. Not some weird opera thing. Calm the f down everyone.
This was the best comment I have seen about James these days, while I mostly agree, that’s just not efficient but it wouldn’t hurt if he recorded the high register notes in the studio to use as playback live and he sings the lower octave live as he doesn’t have the energy he used to.
Playback is possible but they have done stuff with extra musicians before and IMO if it can save the band it's absolutely worth considering doing it all live. Will also add plenty of new creative energy into the DT universe. A bit like The National has been doing (totally different genre but yea) - they started collaborating with extra singers to add this new dimension and they often perform live with them.@@mr.rhenium3167
The older, wiser, less controlling and more mellow MP back in DT is very interesting prospect. I think the band will be more harmonic this time around.
Hopefully the fans will get to hear a new album ….that they want from DT! Don’t mind paying for something that is quality & stands the test of time, coming the musical souls of the musicians, but don’t forget the fans either!
I watched them live back in 2010, kept the flier and everything. Only this year did I realize, in the picture in that flier, they're wearing plain black shirts, except Portnoy who has a skull on his shirt. Announcing his departure right there in the details 😂 that was so Dream Theater... On par with naming an album [D]istance over [T]ime. That one took me a month to notice 🤦♂️😂
Holy shit I am back in the universe I was born in!!! The magic just is there, the chemistry, I feel for Mangini but it was a weird fit, an awkward time for everyone really. This feels like home, gonna go watch the instra-medly now! The church bells part is gonna get me in the feels I know it already.
Does Mike say what's going to happen to Sons of Apollo and The Winery Dogs? I'm glad he's back with DT, but if the world never gets another Winery Dogs album, it would be a damn shame.
Bumblefoot is on record saying Sons is over and Jeff insinuated the same. I'm willing to bet Winery Dogs sticks around though, wouldn't be the first time they went on hiatus. Something for Mike to do during DT's off time.
I'm not ok with this for a few reasons, but I'll make it short. I know [as a drummer myself] MM & MP are extreme drummers and there really is no "better than the other"! My problem with all this is, in my mind, as portrayed from the beginning, MP bailed on the band wanting to find himself. This had been conveyed by every member of the band how they were "blind-sided" by MP leaving. They were devastated and, in some instances, "pissed". They held the infamous drum auditions, which to me always looked like it was predetermined that MM was their choice. Now, no one will ever know what the real "back-room" deal was at that time but unless this was a completely orchestrated maneuver from the beginning that MP was going to "TAKE TIME OFF" and come back at a later time and MM was just a "filler", we'll never know! On the other hand, if the truth is in fact MP truly bailed out and MM was his replacement, how did this happen? It's no secret MP did have a change of heart shortly after he left. Was MM kicked to the curb after MP and JP finally cleared their differences or did MM get over it knowing DT would rather have MP in the drummers seat? We'll never know. I would feel a lot better about this if it came to light that MM chose to leave.
Yes, yes you are!! LTE albums can only be recorded when only two members are also in Dream Theater, so speaking of future LTE albums is like saying Voldemort's name. Now go say Charlie Dominici into a mirror three times to lift the cures before it's too late.
We need to support this kind of band and music .. Buy an album, purchase the show tickets and merchandise to help them sustain in the music industry .. 🙌 Nowadays rock music is so boring. D.I. guitar sounds and the arrangements so boring as fuck .. they are pop music but their act like a rock band.. 💆
LTE has reinjected magic into DT twice now! Thank you for making it happen guys! I'm delighted to see MP back in DT.

The older, wiser, less controlling and more mellow MP back in DT is very interesting prospect. I think the band will be more harmonic this time around.
no portnoy is still a balloon head. biggest ego in history
I'm curious to see if they would include any LTE3 music in their setlist of live shows in the future as DT. I would love it!
They were asking what music you guys currently listen to. Not, what recently new bands you like. Either way. Awesome discussions!
I Remember this moment.. And saw they with Rod Morgenstein on Fall inf. tour
you should make a video to welcome Mr. Mike Portnoy back to Dream Theater, Jordan 😁
I was just getting into The Winery Dogs lol.
I always thought liquid tension experiment was a codename for a bong 😂
like 365 !!! Great !!! Portnoy is Back !!!
I left DT when DT left MP. I am so GLAD Dream Theater is BACK!
Welcome back home Mike. :)
The screen reflected on MPs glasses makes it look like that's he's eye 😂. ❤
I'm happy for mike but sad for mike
❤
The only problem is that the video ends. i.i
My fav album is falling into infinity, I think the other stuff sounds a bit tired.
wondering what's the name of the book that inspired LTE's titles
Does Mike say what's going to happen to Sons of Apollo and The Winery Dogs? I'm glad he's back with DT, but if the world never gets another Winery Dogs album, it would be a damn shame.
Bumblefoot is on record saying Sons is over and Jeff insinuated the same. I'm willing to bet Winery Dogs sticks around though, wouldn't be the first time they went on hiatus. Something for Mike to do during DT's off time.
I would like to know if the project of VST plugin Drums and samples, is going to see the light of day?
Please get James some backup singers and now Dream Theater will be PERFECT
🤘🔥🤘
lets do it
I'm not ok with this for a few reasons, but I'll make it short.
I’ll just say this: 💰
That and politics. Mangini isn’t getting a booster shot each week like the other lefty freaks
Hey Jordan, on a side note, I always wonder if you are familiar to the music from Fito Páez and Charly García from Argentina?
What's with the title of the video?
It's happening
Am I wrong to ask for LTE4?
Yes, yes you are!! LTE albums can only be recorded when only two members are also in Dream Theater, so speaking of future LTE albums is like saying Voldemort's name. Now go say Charlie Dominici into a mirror three times to lift the cures before it's too late.
@@ytsejam6891 In another universe Portnoy plays the bass, and Mangini on the drums.
Next album metropolis cuberprog 2077. THE NEW ERA!
Buongiorno!!!!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Yo pensé justo en ése mismo video. Jeje🎉
We need to support this kind of band and music ..
Buy an album, purchase the show tickets and merchandise to help them sustain in the music industry .. 🙌
Nowadays rock music is so boring.
D.I. guitar sounds and the arrangements so boring as fuck .. they are pop music but their act like a rock band.. 💆
How many words per minute can jordan type?
