    I don't even collect Pokémon cards I collect Yu-Gi-Oh cards. But I enjoy seeing videos from a more serious TCG collector. Most of the collectors out there are too childish or unprofessional for the serious side of collecting. Keep it up smpratte you'll gain subscribers over time. It's all just a snowball effect.

    I remember watching this video months ago and it well and truly put me off bgs but after now getting some bgs cards I've honestly fallen in love with the beauty of the cases and I love the fact that scoring all subgrades at a 10 gives it a black label. The cases make psa look cheap. So get both and make up your own mind. This video has great points but it's your own collection and own money when all said and done

      BGS “Black Label Pristine 10” is complete bull shit, Unless they have an actually perfect Pokémon card from actual place that makes the cards, that they can actual use as a reference to show how a perfect Pokémon card should look I call bS, they are just try to limit how many valuable cards there can be, and hey look Beckett has the ultimate super grade you can get on a card let’s all go get our cards graded over there and spend our money to see if we can get a perfect card that nobody seen or even know what perfect is because Pokémon never show us a reference to an actual perfect Charzard, or yu hi oh never showed us a perfect BEWD before, but we are gonna keep trying to get the Black Label 10 like dummies.......and maybe when one does pop up there are like 10 PSA 10 that are excaly the same but BGS doesn’t want to flood the market with Black Labels.

    The Venusaur is an Old Cert BGS slab from 2013. They graded softer back then and so did PSA. New certs are much tougher now and more consistent from both companies. Look at old cert PSAs, most 9s back then would be 8s now, etc.

    My thoughts and opinion are that it all depends on the Grader. They can have a great day or a bad day, and that can determine what type of grade the card receives. Humans always do this at their jobs. IDK I'm just throughing that out there. Great content! I'm binging all your videos. Thanks to Pokémon Classics for referring you. Have a great day bro.

    PSA cases can hide the whitening around the edges. I have PSA card with a little whitening on the edge,it can also move in the case a bit, I move it a bit to the other side and I can see it even more.The little thick plastic in the case that looks like it holding the cards can hide whitening.The little plastic which look like it can hold the card in black label is far away from the card,so any imperfections you will see more clearly in black label

    I think another important point is that the most pokemon collectors don't want a complete wotc set with both companys mixed, they prefer to have it all graded by one company. So if you want to invest in cards, you should focus more on psa because you have a way bigger market of customers for your product.
    Btw. maybe i'm too strict but i would never have graded this card 4:43 because it looks more like a 7 or an eight to me.

    I send one basketball card to bgs to graded and it a came back a 9.5 I cracked it open and send it to PSA and it came back a 10 what that mean PSA grades it better but I had send another card to bgs and came back a perfect 10 black and sold that card 5x more than any 10 on PSA so that’s why lots of people sends to bgs just Incase they get that perfect 10 black $$

    this was a horrible comparison on the espeon cards it is obvious the PSA is off center on the front which should take it down a full grade automatic plus it has whitening on 3 corners on back should grade 7.5 for PSA not a 9 and yes they graded the beckett pretty lenient with all the wear on the bottom but the front is on point unlike the PSA with the same amount of flaws on the back but end up with same grade

    Is it me or do the cards move around in the PSA cases. I bought a few "10's" and because of the lose cases the cards seem to be damaged... I don't see how a card can get a 10 with off centering and corner whitening. Some cards look great besides the corner specks. I don't know how these graders grade cards.

    Dude it’s obvious that certain graders don’t have a clue as to what an actual near mint card and above would look like! That venesaur was a psa 5 or 6 all day long! How tf did it get an 8.5! I have plenty of 8.5 and 8s they don’t look like that.

  • @johnnys.3465

    I collect MTG. BGS grade seems more accurate because it contains 4 main parameters of the card to consider. NM cards usually sell for more then 8.5s with low subgrades. PSA will often give you very low grade for a single small problem, or they give a 10 with obvious problems, which hurts the set consistency. You can buy BGS cards without a photo, PSA not so much.
    At the end of the day, collectors should not need grading services. If they cant tell the condition or authenticity of their collection, they have been doing it wrong.

    Can I email you some pictures of my shadowless charizard that just came back from PSA? I can really use your opinion for a regrade with Beckett.. I had a water spot and a small hardly visible crease line on the back very minimal edge whitening and the front is almost perfect. I received a 4 from PSA and I was thinking 8-9!! So maybe I can get a 7 with Beckett? I would really appreciate your opinion sir.

    I understand the difference in grades between the two companies but do you have any info on why bgs seems to be the gold standard for mtg while psa is for pokemon? Judging by this video alone it seems psa is more thorough than bgs and more consistent so wouldn't everyone rather use psa? I'm currently sending a few very high end mtg cards to Beckett solely because Beckett grades are what collectors seem to demand.

    • @smpratte
      @smpratte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. The speculation has always been that BGS never had the experience/history with Pokemon. Perhaps their timeline is longer with MTG. Or they don't prioritize Pokemon. Either way this has always been the assumed reasons, no one really knows for sure why there is such a discrepancy with pokemon.

    Beckett lost all of their credibility to me when, several years ago, I had one of their price guides. In that guide, they listed cards that do not exist, such as reverse-holo EX-series ex and Gold Star cards. That tells me they're just lazy in the least, they just copy-and-pasted the set list from regular to reverse-holo.

  • @IanMcDaries

    I think the important fact that people should take away from this, is that 9s and BGS 9.5s/PSA 10s (the cards that actually sell for more than their raw counterparts) are similar in quality.
    As for the lower grades you are comparing, how relevant is it to compare when those cards wouldn't sell for anymore than their raw near mint-light play counterparts. I am not denying that there is variance, but my point is, is it really relevant to compare the cards that are 9 times out of 10 broken out and resold raw or sold at cost/a loss? Also you should compare a more recent 8.5 to be consistent with the other 2 BGS cards. The 9.5 and 9 serial numbers are within the last year, while the Venusaur is from at least 3 years ago. The grading I have experienced for the last 2 years with BGS (close to 600 Pokemon cards, and other TCGs) has been extremely consistent.
    As for MTG, BGS is preferred for a couple of reasons, but I would say that the number one is because the sub grades are a huge factor in MTG ABUAAL sets and a .5 can be a significant difference in price.
    Also not sure how you can say PSA doesn't influence the market, the magazine they came out with focused on Pokemon has drastically increased the Team Rocket set values.

    • @smpratte
      @smpratte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Some nice points here! In relation to the lower grades, monetary value is a separate point in relation to consistency. Also, the sub 9 grades are relevant for wotc product, especially 1st ed base.
      In relation to your mention of PSA articles, there is a difference in releasing an information based article vs something like this: th-cam.com/video/D-sx6-i_WkA/w-d-xo.html
      That video is exactly what I personally don't like about Beckett. Of course this is simply my preference, and no company or person is perfect. But I prefer more information based publications. For example, I loved reading becketts pokemon magazines back in the day. There is nothing wrong with publishing informative articles on any hobby. However, the video I linked showcases a valuable modern 1/1 card, which is OC, has indents, but somehow earned a 9.5 Gem Mint rating. Coupled with the humble bragging of other valuable items just doesn't sit right with me. Again, this is just my preference and opinion.

    • @IanMcDaries
      @IanMcDaries 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your response back,
      I agree that there are exceptions to cards lower than 9 that need to be taken into account (a lot of MTG alpha cards have a majority/highest grades of their pop sitting around 8.5-9) I think looking for Gems for so long has made me take a more all or nothing approach to graded cards, where I want to maximize my investment. So if I see something lower than a 9, I can be too critical and write it off. (Of course this approach isn't absolute, if I see an illustrator card or something crazy rare for a good price I will still want it. But for cards that were massed produced/officially released I tend to take this approach).
      That video is cringe worthy and understand how that is off putting. I am not sure if BGS does that style of video/reporting anymore. Now it seems closer to informing people what the market is doing, and help give a guide on what cards go for/could be worth. Along with showcasing new product. As you said no company is perfect, however BGS seems to have come a long way from this. At least in my experience of grading with them.
      I still have some of those old Beckett Magazines, those are very nostalgic! Love looking at them, reminds of when I started collecting as a kid.
      Thanks Again for your response! Your videos are refreshing to see. I especially enjoyed your VS Series video. Glad you shed light on one of my most favorites sets.

    No, I know that you are a experienced collector but you are wrong in my opinion because for one, 3 Beckett 10s 120+ for the 1st edition base set charizard 2nd of all, if you bought the venasaur which you probably did. The original owner had probably dropped the card while it was incased. Also the sub grades which gives you a better perspective of the grade. you were probably paid by PSA because you are a experienced collector.
