    TAAT tip: You can cast on both socks for cuff down onto your needles without all of the fussiness of extra needles. You basically just cast on half of the stitches for the first sock then push them down the needle. Cast on on all of the stitches for your second sock and slide those down. Bring your needles together, slide the half cast on first sock all the way to the needles(they should be on the left needle) and finishing casting on the first sock by putting the remaining stitches on the empty needle(it should be the right needle). You will need to divide the stitches of the second sock in half over the bend in the cable, and then get going in the round.
    I don't know if this makes sense, but I'm sure there is a tutorial out there for this somewhere and it's super easy and way less fussy. :)
    Edited to add TAAT for life! My SSS is extreme and thank goodness this method exist lol.

    Hi! I really appreciate your video. Just fyi, it’s really possible to cast on both socks on the same circular needle. Basically you cast on the first half of stitches of the first sock, then all the stitches of the second sock and finally the second part of the first sock. Hard to explain but easy to do!! 😂

    TAAT Tip: I have added grommets to all my project bags. Since I always use at least 2 colors for socks, I feed one color for each sock through each grommet, and zip the bag. Then there is no tangled yarn and when I turn my needles, I just flip the bag. Also, I use DPNs for the gusset. The rest of the socks are on my 40” or 47” needles. Hope that helps.

    There is one more way to do TAAT which is how I do it now. First I want to say I feel responsible for this video after declaring my astonishment at your ufo socks. LOL! I agree you should definitely do TAAT. I have made TAAT on two circs and also magic loop with a single circ… but I so love my dpns and feel like I am eating cake without icing when I don’t get to use my beloved dpns, so I do TAAT tandem on dpns. Two identical sets of dpns, yarn into two cakes, cast on, cast on, 20 rows rib, 20 rows rib, 10 leg, 10 leg etc… You get the gist. I love it. It goes surprisingly fast and they get finished at the same time. Sometimes I leave one sock upstairs and one downstairs. If I am upstairs I will grab one and do a few rounds, and then when I go downstairs I work on the other. Sometimes one sock gains on the other (usually the leg of the sock knit in front of a good movie) but leapfrog doesn’t have to be equal. This is my perfect TAAT. No cords, no yarns tangling together (each is in it’s own ziplock bag), I get to use my dpns and both socks get finished the same day. ❤

      @@WildeBookGarden Me too. My friend and I call it TAATT (Two at a time tandem). The thing is the only time I get to use my dpn’s is small circumference knitting and I was loathe to forgo them every time I did taat on ML. This way I get the best of both worlds and the socks really do get finished. I don’t allow myself to do the toe on one until the foot on the other is done too. Something about it… ❤️

      I've attempted it just for proof of concept, but you can also knit 2 at a time simultaneously on a single set of needles by essentially stranded knitting with two yarns and just always keeping the strands in their position. You could also look at it like double knitting. I'm sure someone made a video. I found it overwhelming when I tried it many years ago and haven't gotten around to trying it again.

    • @RKCALGARY
      @RKCALGARY ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angrytrees7519 This sounds like taat on magic loop. 2 balls of yarn. 2 socks, one circular needle. Is that what you mean?

  • @maliaprescott
    @maliaprescott 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I love that TAAT works so well for so many people! That’s the magic of knitting, there’s something for everyone. I personally don’t prefer it - constantly dropping and picking up strands of yarn totally interrupts my flow and I don’t like how the “inactive” sock restricts the free movement of my cables, even when they’re super long. One at a time magic loop is where my heart lies.

  • @nicoleyahc
    @nicoleyahc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    All my socks are knit 2 at at time! Yes I find it more fussy at times and see people working on one sock and I think "wow that looks relaxing", BUT....I agree with the motivation of knowing they will be done at the same time is a huge bonus. Although, for me (and my personal brand of neurosis)... knowing they will be worked IDENTICALLY and that any changes I made were very easy to make on both socks at the same time, and not forgotten if I didn't write it down, is the absolute answer for me.
    Cheers!

    2AAT is my preferred sock knitting technique, and toe-up is the way to go. You can easily do Judy’s Magic or the Turkish cast-on with only a few stitches, creating a seamless, beautiful toe tip. Then you just increase from there, with both socks on the single circular. I love to knit socks with the Chiaogoo Mini Twist sock needles. The cords are thin and super-flexible, like a piece of cooked angel hair pasta. No Second Sock Syndrome, ever.

    • @HarmonyInspired
      @HarmonyInspired 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also do TAAT Toe Up. I always use the turkish cast on: wrap the stitches for one sock, tuck the yarn between the needles, slide down, and cast on the second one. I use a 50 inch cable, because I was always worrying the stitches were going to slide off the end. That made me tense and feeling claustrophobic. The 50 inch cable also is handy for magic loop on toques aka beanies.

    When I learned how to knit socks 7 or 8 years ago, I only did one at a time for about 2 pairs. My friend inspired me to learn two at a time on 2 circulars because they are identical, they require less counting of rows and they actually got me to want to perfect my technique. For some reason, I had a mental block in getting it when it came to the heels and how to keep all of it straight to get back to my original stitch count to keep going. That took me a LONG time to improve on. However, I kept at it and my skills increased and the satisfaction I get when I see the finished product is worth all the hard work to learn.

Cuff 1, cuff 2, and then 5-10 rows on sock 1, then 5-10 on sock 2, back and forth, heel 1, heel 2... if I have a complicated stitch pattern I'd probably just switch between the socks each row but I don't find that as fiddly as yarn management.

    As for casting on TAAT toe up socks, I have also done a method where you do a provisional cast on for half the stitches, knit what is basically your favorite short row heel, slide those stitches down the cable when finished, then provisionally cast on the second toe the same way. Once both toes/short row heels are done, you will have half the stitches for each sock on one side of the cable, then pick up the other half of each sock from the provisional cast on side on the other side. Then boom you got two toe up socks ready for TAAT knitting!

    My joy is knitting 2@a time using 2 separate 9” circulars. So easy. No yarn tangles & easy commuter knitting too. Cuff down, heel gusset and round toes. Able to compare leg and foot length immediately. Knitting mojo never stops,. Typically one day behind the other and done! Just another suggestion for anyone not thrilled with magic loop and/or yarn management. Just sayin…

    I imagined that you could never get me to give up my dpn's and I have a small fortune in them. I learned to lever knit which works best for me, but when I am on dpns, I am stopping to move from one needle to the other and often having to re-tension the yarn in my hand. So, I reluctantly tried this. I think that like many, I have a love/hate relationship with magic loop. I tried two circ's and that seemed harder to handle for two at a time socks. Yes, it was a tad fiddly and I did do my cuffs on separate needles and then attached them, but I'm whizzing along on the magic loop. You have great energy and you talk about things in such depth that I thought that if she likes it, then I might like it, too. As for dpns, there's also the time when you're knitting in bed and one has to tear apart the whole bed to find that one needle that got away. As for the flexi dpns, I don't know if you did anything on them, but for me they are an absolute nightmare. You have just converted me to this method and I'm happy as a clam if you think of a clam as constantly smiling.

    One of the reasons I like bottom up (nearly seamless) sweaters, is you can knit both sleeves at the same time and sometimes even the body as well, so no sleeve island syndrome.

    Hi Tayler, thank you for another interesting and informative episode. I don’t like using magic loop generally so won’t be trying the method I do knit a lot of socks one at a time cuff down using dpns. I avoid second sock syndrome by casting on the second sock as soon as I finish the first one.However, I do sometimes fail to finish the first sock😢. Is there a term for that problem?

    I use two large binder clips when TAAT. Clip them onto the edge of the bag after putting the yarn through one of the arms of each clip.

    I’m an exclusively TAAT knitter and always toe up because you can cast on both socks on the same needle. Use Judy’s magic cast on. No fuss with slipping stitches onto a holder. And you can knit the socks without worry of running out of yarn, you just knit until the yarn is used up (if you want a long leg sock) or that partner with ‘long’ feet.

    I always cast on TAAT toe up using the Turkish Cast On method which allows me to cast them both on at the same time on the same needle. It’s a bit fiddly at the start but it’s better than having to put one sock on a holder and then transfer it to the main needle.

    I knit socks with dpn's and do TAAT. I use 2 sets of dpn's. Cast on and knit the toe of one, then the other. Same with the heel. For the foot and leg portion, I use yarn markers to keep track of rounds and just switch back and forth between the socks.

    I love, love, love 2AAT but I use 2 circulars. Toe up or cuff down. When you're done, you're DONE.
    After listening to most of your video, I can tell you that you can cast on both socks to start. it's a little fussy, but once you get it, it's pretty smooth. The more you do that the easier it gets. Also, one really good pro is that you don't have to keep track of how many rows you knit on the first sock so you can knit the second one the same. When I first learned to knit socks I did them one at a time, but once I learned 2AAT I would never go back to knitting individual socks. Good info on your video

    Currently working 4 at a time - 2 pair on size 0 needles so going slowly. For me TAAT means no counting to the rows are even and ease of keeping going on the project. I happen to knit on 2 circulars just because I always have.

    I love that second sock! It goes so fast. All of the considerations as to size, pattern, color (and trying on for fit) has occurred on the first sock - so the second is a pure joy to make.
    I do tend to tink a lot when I reconsider, miscalculate or make an error. I would hate to have to tink one sock and not the other. I guess I could hold the “good sock” aside while tinking and repairing but it seems more fiddly than I’d like.
    Whatever works best, right? I think it’s fun that we all have ideas about how to get our projects done.

    I knit socks two simultaneously - toe, toe; foot, foot; heel, heel; ankle, ankle; leg, leg. Never have second sock syndrome and a pair is complete within a few hours or a day at most of each other. I do wind yarn into two cakes and use a divided project bag.

  • @hollyputnat

    If I want a matched pair I do two at a time. ESPECIALLY when trying to match up stripes in self-striping yarn. If I'm more interested in the speed of finishing a single sock I'll pick two different sock patterns that kinda go together-ish and knit two different sock patterns in the same yarn for coordinating mismatched socks. If that makes sense. I think it adds a touch of whimsy. I've not been good about updating my ravelry but to see what I mean I have at least one set of "sister socks" on my project page (HollyHobbies)

    I'm another who learned to do TAAT by casting both socks on to one needle. :)
    When I first learned to sock knit I definitely suffered SSS. I don't so much any more. My favorite way though it concurrent like someone else said. It does take two needles but I have plenty so that isn't a problem. I just do cuff 1, cuff 2, leg 1, leg 2, etc. Then by the time I finish sock 1 I'm right behind it with sock two and it didn't feel like it took as long (to me).

    This would have saved me from a boneheaded mistake I made with a pair of socks. I made one sock and got distracted for a few weeks before I picked up my yarn and needles to make the second sock. Unfortunately, I guessed wrong on which needles I used, and ended up with 1 1/2 socks that were not the same size. If I had more yarn I could have made mates for the ones i had knitted, but I didn't, so I had to frog the 2nd sock. This is also payback for my carelessness in documenting my work. My New Year's resolution is to track my projects in Ravelry. I hope that 2023 is good to all of us!

  • @beagare2197

    Thanks for the video Taylor. I agree completely - anything tubular and I'm there knitting both things at the same time (no second sock syndrome; no second sleeve syndrome either). Where I would disagree is that you can't cast on both, onto your long circular, at the same time. As with yarn - it just takes some organisation. Toe up socks are particularly easy, but I'm currently working on some top down socks where, as usual, I cast on half the stitches for sock A, then half the stitches for sock B, turn my needles, CO the second half of the stitches for sock B, and then the rest of the stitches for sock A. Doing it this way also prevents any confusion about where the beginning of round is if one sock has been hanging about elsewhere. Thanks again - love your work. Bea

    I am a TAAT toe up sock knitter. My pro is that my socks are the same size and I don't have to count rows. For me that is a big win. I've done it that way so long it would feel odd to do one at a time. I tried four at a time once. Won't do that again!

  • @vysgiyi

    This was so timely! I was really thinking about learning this method just so I could stop measuring my legs and cuffs. But honestly that seems way easier than worrying about casting on two at a time. I also am not a fan of magic loop and prefer 9in circulars and actually knit second socks faster than my first since I get a little rush with finishing an item. But I think it would be a great idea for something that’s maybe a process, gift, or even a challenging knit when consistency is your goal. Thanks again for some great points and a great video!

    I learned to make socks two at a time using 16" and 24" needles so both socks were cast on together, and it worked out fine from the first. I have never made socks any other way.
