So I am not a dentist, but I think the most important thing is to always clean your mouth with water or just drink water after you drank a soda or any sugary drink. Also after you eat something sweet. This has saved me so many times. It will stop your teeth from decaying pretty much, or slow down the rate drastically.

what about 0 calorie drinks with artificial sweeteners?

    • @Aldraz
      @Aldraz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +82

@@bulsye Again, I am not a dentist, but as far as I know most 0-calorie drinks with artificial sweeteners don't contain fermentable sugars, so they don't directly contribute to the acid production by oral bacteria that leads to cavities. However, many of these drinks are acidic in nature as they contain for example phosphoric acid, citric acid, etc.. which can erode tooth enamel, so rinsing, drinking water afterwards should help with that. If you are looking for the safest artificial sweetener, it would be Xylitol as it has a lot of positive effects on teeth, but it can be laxative in high amounts.

For all you teeth clenching grinders out there, I've always grinded my teeth both in sleep and under the day uncounciously, the only thing that helped me is massaging the sides of my neck from the collarbone up to under the ear, the jawline(get ur thumb/fingers in under the jawline) and the cheeks(get in there, almost under into the cheekbone) for 5-10 minutes before sleep, use a face moisturizer as lubricant to make it easier.
Some spots may hurt a little esp if ur a heavy clencher like me, the goal is to increase bloodflow so it's normal to become a little red at the areas afterwards.
I immediately felt the difference after I did this, instead of having to keep the jaw clenched when keeping my mouth closed the jaw found almost like a natural resting position

"toot pain is one of the worst pain that you could have" - Agreed. Had a few bad ones and once I had to go to the ER, it was unbearable. However, I've sprained my ankle recently and I have to be honest, the pain was in a completely different league. Tooth pain is the only reason I've ever left work in the middle of a shift that didn't involve a family member in the hospital. I got an infected wisdom tooth, and for 3 days the pain from that tooth consumed 100% of my conscious attention. It was either excruciating pain, or waiting for the next wave to hit. I'd occasionally get maybe a 10-20 minute reprieve. After having the tooth extracted, the relief was immense. Tooth pain is absolutely not a joke.

I had the same happen to a tooth, the infection spread to the maxillary sinus, right below the eye. I remember sitting in the dentist’s office, trying to fill out paperwork while looking directly up at the ceiling. Even tilting my head down just slightly would make it feel like my eyeball was going to pop out.
And I’d agree, it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. The only thing that came close was a time where i had an intestinal blockage. That felt like i was getting stabbed repeatedly in the same spot…still wasn’t quite as bad as that tooth. Same with the relief, I hardly noticed the gaping hole in my gums, by comparison that pain literally felt like nothing with a few Tylenol.

Worth a mention is biting your nails! A couple years ago I actually managed to chip off a bit of my tooth by nibbling a hangnail. I heard a crack, felt something hard, and behold, there was a piece of my tooth enamel. I remember it well because this happened about an hour before I had to submit an assignment. I don't care if it's only a small piece of nail, or if you think you're just biting the skin, don't bite your fingers. It was a tiny sliver of nail that chipped my tooth, possibly it being small even made the issue worse by concentrating the force. Just don't bite, or risk chipping your teeth like me. I tell everyone around me off when I see them biting these days.

oh yeah, I had recently (well, a year or two ago) heard that as well
I still have trouble believing it because I've always done it from a relatively young age, and quite thoroughly
It also happens pretty subconsciously, or when I'm not really paying attention (head empty)
If I encounter resistance in which ever section of the nail, I work around it and wet it until it becomes more pliable and soft, so I haven't had an issue so far
But I do understand that I probably should avoid these oral tendencies, like nail biting or teeth grinding or biting my tongue
I did get a nightguard pretty recently, but I forget to wear it often-- though I've been doing a better job of wearing it at night lately

Something else that I think a surprisingly large amount of people do (I myself didn't learn about this until I way well over 30), is to rinse your mouth with water after brushing, completely removing any benefits from the fluoride in the toothpaste.
The discussion came up on a forum I frequented and a dentist in the forum was really surprised to hear that several of us posting there was rinsing after brushing, for him it was totally obvious you should just spit out the excess and then leave the rest so that the fluoride can do it's job. For me (and probably the others in the forum with the same habit) though, I just considered toothpaste a "cleaner" in the same way as soap or shampoo that you rinse out when you're done, I never even considered the option of leaving some of it in.

Well you got me googling. It does seem to be a legit piece of advice.
I read several websites, but here I quote a little caveat from Healthline:
“-Potential risks of not rinsing after brushing teeth-
It’s generally considered safe for most people to ditch the rinse step after brushing their teeth. However, there some side effects to consider.
Ingesting a large amount of any fluoride dental product is not recommended. Ingesting too much fluoride can result in:
      - nausea
      - diarrhea
      - abdominal pain
However, these side effects are extremely rare when only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is used. These side effects also usually only happen when children ingest large amounts of fluoride products meant for adults, or if fluoride products intended for use in the dentist’s office are used inappropriately. It would be very difficult for a healthy adult to achieve any level of fluoride toxicity simply by swallowing a small amount of toothpaste once in a while.
      -Fluoride and children-
The American Dental Association now recommends that children under the age of 3 can also use fluoride toothpaste as soon as they get their first tooth. However, a child’s guardian should only smear a rice grain sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste on the toothbrush, and the child should rinse right after brushing.”

      @ced3069 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I am glad to have learned this information at the age of 20, although I actually already knew that the fluoride ions provided by toothpaste should stay there, but it became a habitual thing for me (since I grew up watching ppl around me rinsing after brushing) and also I don't like too much foam inside of my mouth (you can switch to toothpaste with no Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, the one mostly responsible for foaming action so switch to a toothpaste with gentler surfactant, and it can really dry your skin in your face if you don't rub them off properly after brushing) so I still rinsed. But once I switched to a non-SLS toothpaste, I no longer rinsed after brushing.

Hi! Dental student here, there’s different methods of brushing your teeth that’s deemed acceptable good ways of brushing. Some methods might be better suited for people with braces or if they have periodontitis. The one that showed here is I believe the bass method but the main message is to use soft toothbrushes, gentle pressure, and brush in circular motions at a 45 degree angle toward the gum line. Goal is to brush away the bacteria buildup under the gums and without harming your teeth and gums. And floss! Flossing cleans 40-50% of surfaces that toothbrush doesn’t reach (between teeth and under the gum line). Hope this helps :)

Listening to you share your overcoming experience gave me the glim of hope I needed to hear. I am glad that there are people like you out there who just want to help other people who are struggling with the same issues. Your words gave me the courage I needed to hear today to know that it's ok. This was a great friendly reminder to floss daily. Long story short, I have not had the spare money OR insurance, so I haven’t been to a dentist in maybe, 5 years?
I brush daily before work thoroughly, but I will admit I have had a bad habit lately of not brushing before bed. I really wanna try to meet twice a day and shoot for flossing before bed. I’m thankful my diet is well, I don’t chew ice, drink any sort of caffeine. I rarely have crunchy foods or snacks. Nor do I brush too hard.
But, I’d still like to make time and money to visit a dentist sometime. I’d like to keep enjoying my smile for a good while :)

I have a night guard made by my dentist, but I still clench and grind. I don’t feel stressed but my body somehow still does it in my sleep. I cannot control it…😢 however, I have been going to a dentist to get Botox injections in my masseters, and it really helps. With Botox I can’t clench as hard so I don’t get sore jaw any more. I try to space it out, so I go every 6 months. Of course, that means I can’t chew as hard, like baguette, steak or gum. My mouth would get tired, but I’ll take a tired mouth over a sore jaw any day!

8:40 When I had a deep cavity in my molar I couldnt even sleep for 2 weeks I kept waking up crying in the middle of the night it was so terrible I couldnt eat anything I was wishing to see the grim reaper at a certain point just to get rid of the pain 😭 It definetly ranks #2 for most painful thing I have experienced, #1 was my first period I swear I dont even know if that one is beatable I sure hope not 😭
What sucks is that the dentist had warned about it years ago needing a filling but I was a really anxious kid so it wasnt filled that day (though if they wouldve just taken the time to explain that a filling only takes like 10 minutes, all the steps and that it doesnt even hurt instead of having a trashy attitude towards a child I probably wouldve been less scared and done it.) plus my parents just never properly took care of my health as well as many other aspects of my life so it just got worse because it never occured to me that no, its not normal for a tooth to just simple grow with a hole in it and that it was a cavity. By the time I did realize, it was pretty bad but still months before I would experience the tremendous pain I went through, however they wouldnt listen to me begging for months to go to the dentist because it wasnt "hurting" enough and it costs money (They could very well afford it though). Despite trying my best to tell them it will only be worse the longer they wait and It'll causs a world of pain for me every word that came out of my mouth landed on deaf ears. And guess who still got yelled at because of how much it cost and the time the procedure took although it was a result of their negligence in the 1st place? Me.
No suprise though because they do this with everything, they ignore everything I say for no apparent reason (I GENUINELY did nothing for them to think every word that comes out my mouth is false or unimportant) and then when it becomes an issue they wanna be all *suprised pickachu face*. It enrages me to the ends of the universe and I just wanna curl into a ball and combust into flames
    *sigh* :)

Easiest, short term fix for me is loosening up my jaw when I'm about to fall asleep, and let my mouth slightly open. 90% of the time that fixed the problem, though sometimes it failed.

All those 5 mentioned are justifiable. Growing up, we are schooled to have strong teeth. Not white shinny teeth. Before twist top bottles, we use are teeth to open up bottles. We also use are teeth to crack open crab legs. I may not have a perfect pearly white teeth. At 52, my teeth are way stronger than other people, my siblings, nephews and nieces. They all have false teeth, and root canal. I don't. I may have lost some of my teeth in my 20s, I still maintain the same left over teeth. I just bought an Oral B, electric tooth brush. It just goes on circles. I still prefer brushing the old way.

Whitening toothpastes are usually more abrasive, so not great for long-term use. You can try a kids toothpaste with a normal amount of fluoride (1,000 ppm or 0.15% w/v Fluoride Ion). The first percentage under the drug facts can vary depending on what kind of fluoride compound it is, but the w/v (weight/volume) percentage should standardize things.

From what I've gathered, whitening toothpaste doesn't actually do anything. Things like whitening strips actually work because they're sitting on your teeth long enough for the hydrogen peroxide to actually get into the teeth to whiten them. With the toothpaste, it's only being left on for... A few minutes at most. (Also worth mentioning, in case anyone reading this does this, but... DON'T use charcoal on your teeth! All it does is scrub away the top layer of enamel.)

Let's also not forget that the oral microbiome is very important to gum and teeth health, and that Vitamin C has been demonstrated to help gums and teeth.
Further, it's important to understand what water you're using. Are you rinsing with tap water? If so, check to see what chemicals are in the tap water. It's probably better to have a supply of clean water at home for rinsing.
Lastly, salt water rinses are very effective at helping teeth and gums.
