I always interpreted it about it being a song about growing up and leaning on your family.
"A family of trees" being a clearer reference to the story of The Giving Tree.
"Control yourself, take only what you need from it" Mirrors the story of the kid growing older and older and taking more and more from the tree (with the tree representing family.)

I always saw it as just being about growing up and losing that childhood innocence but reminding yourself to control yourself and keep balanced and grounded, try to keep that wonder and curiosity of childhood

A little late, but im honestly shocked that there are so many interpretstions of this song. I actually got the idea that the song was being sang by an absent father who wishes he was still around, afraid he'll be forgotten by the time he enters the child's life again, and hoping to impart some advice or wisdom. The song sounds sad to me, like there is a blissful ignorange (the fun poppy synth) but what its saying - the melodic progression - is regretful, remourseful. The family of trees in want of haunting seems like a call from the child and the father to one another, both having their own families, both feeling incomplete without the other.
Tbh i dont really care what the true meaning is anymore, im more engrossed by all the other explanationsnive found

I always thought it was about adoption. Or the giving of a child away to a new family. Better family. And the baby is crawling towards its own ambition. Also thought that was clear. Take every line in this song seriously. It was written that way for a reason. A haunted forest is just a forest with something else in it. That family of trees wants a new member of the family. The characteristics of a tree describe the new family, which sheds light on why its parents put it up for adoption. I viewed the chorus as parting advice. The fact that the chorus gets repeated adds depth this way.

@@princey_06 a little late - like over a year late - but I think where people get the climate change idea from is by the line "the water is warm, but it's giving me shivers", with the idea clearly being the fact that the water is being heated by global warming which is causing Andrew to become anxious about how the environment is being treated by humans. While it seems as though this one line is the basis for this interpretation, the rest of the song helps add to it. "You pick the insects off of plants, no time to think of consequences" shows that humans intervene in nature in a detrimental way going back to when they are children, which they don't think about because... they're children. This unawareness only continues into adulthood where they make far more harmful decisions than picking insects off plants, but they don't care. "A family of trees wanting to be haunted" has two meanings under this interpretation: 1) This carelessness continues generation to generation, thus a family tree being haunted (or perhaps cursed) to repeat the mistakes of the past.
      2) Trees in the environment just sitting there waiting to be haunted by the inevitable intervention of humans.
