I actually knew that this song was about Pat Monahan's mom.
Shooting star without a permanent scar: I would imagine that the scar refers to struggles with cancer and the scars of her illness. Wanting to be remembered without that scar of cancer.
The line of being a plain old Jane: a simple way to say that he's worried that his mom won't be proud of him.

The only thing I know about the meaning is that it's about the lead singer remembering a dream he had of his mom in space, and his mother died like 7 or 9 months ago during that time, it's such a sad song
    Yep I'm right
The perfect star has to be Freddie.

i never realized or looked up what this song was about until now .i always felt like it was about a mother and not a gf. idk if it’s because of what my sister and i were going through at the time we first heard it .
when we were teenagers our mom was diagnosed with schizophrenia. it took a while for her doctors to diagnose her and even longer to get her on the right meds . but during that time we would tell each other she was just on a magical trip having the time of her life and that when she got back she would tell us about all the amazing things she saw “while she was looking for herself out there “ .
it makes me sad that as 13 and 15 year old we could feel the pain in his words and kind of relate ( even tho we didn’t lose our mother ) but anyways what i’m trying to say is that it really helped us get through a really hard time in our life . to this day this song makes us cry

You should totally analyze more of Train's older stuff like this. They've never been one of my favorite bands or anything, but my mom got me into them in middle school for the pure fact of how unique their lyricism is. Sometimes they seem like they're trying too hard to be quirky, but they do come up with really interesting ways to say what they mean

This is my favorite song in the world. I’ve been telling everyone it’s true meaning forever and everyone has a new view of it after you learn its not a love song in a romantic way. This song can easily make me cry when I think about its meaning too much. He sings it so emotionally. Were you lonely looking for yourself out there and was is everything you wanted to find are my favorite lines. He’s still concerned that she’s happy out there

For the “one without a permanent scar” line. I feel like he’s literally talking about falling. She fell from a star, back into the atmosphere but she didn’t get hurt because maybe you can’t get hurt or get scars in heaven.
I think when he writes about he’s afraid of her seeing him as “plain”, he’s talking about his own insecurities and fears. I imagine it as his mom telling him that there’s so much more out there and that the universe is so much bigger than the thing he’s afraid of. She knows now because she’s seen it for herself.

In an interview with WFAN radio Pat Monahan explains the death of his mother was deeply traumatic and that she had been the most important person in his life. The words came to him in a dream shortly after she died from cancer and felt it was her telling him that she was ok and that it was ok to move on with his life. He also included nods to him and his band in the song. Tae Bo creator is Billy Blanks who was born in Erie, PA, Monahan's home town. Soy Latte is a nod to his band who loved Starbucks. Deep fried chicken was a reference to his mother's amazing cooking. His mom was his biggest fan and he was her shining star. Permanent scar is the scar on his chin. This is such an amazing tribute song about the deep deep loss of a loved one.

this song is actually part of a compilation called "Songs That Saved My Life 2" where bands cover songs that mean a lot to them and I think it would be interesting to explain the other songs of this album and the original one. They cover everything from The Postal Service to Death Cab For Cutie to Linkin Park, Third Eye Blind and the Beatles

this is just an idea, but the scar could be referring to when meteors hit earth it leaves a mark behind. Maybe she fell from a shooting star but she never hurt earth so it means she's not really dead? Something like that. maybe the shooting star represents the cancer.

Tru meaning of drops of jupiter is in the first line of the song.. the drops of jupiter means the tears of the eyes of her mother when she at the atmospher a tear drop falling to her hair because she was sad to leave her son...

"But tell me did you sail across the sun did you make it to the milky way" that line makes me think of, like hes asking his mom if she lived her life happy. Did she travel and experience things that she wanted to. A song of interaction between him and his mom and the mourning of her. Im no expert by far, just what i was thinking

You guys have it wrong.. Pat actually wrote this when he was young in part but it wasn't a complete idea.. when we were young he used to write about the seasonal changes and how they effected the earth.. simultaneously he had this recurrent dream about a ballerina dancing around a lamp.. when Patricia died it came together.. when things get emotional he gives people an out with humor..or a quirky turn of phrase.. some times he nods to people that know him without calling them out.. there is a bit of magic in it.

I think when he says "Can you imagine no love, pride, deep fried chicken ... no first dance, freeze-dried romance.." he is listing out so many things his mother loved. Since she is now just part of the atmosphere, she no longer has these things. I think he's saying: can you imagine existing differently and no longer having all these things you loved?
Like "You don't have these things anymore BUT tell me, did you finally get the chance to dance to the light of day?"
She lost everything she was, but she gained something new.

This changes everything. Up until now I didn't know what the lyrics meant. 8 months ago I had a stroke then found out on the same day I had cancer all while losing my mom less than 2 weeks later. The belief that everything changes due to someone's impact to life, and even the "universe" might be the reason he accepted his mom as being in the atmosphere. Poetically, death is sometimes referred to as complete freedom. The scar, as people here have commented, might resemble imperfection and her cancer. My passion for this song is stronger than ever.

I would say a Lot of ppl want their parents to be proud of them, and not view them as too afraid to go after their dreams and stay comfortable floating through life with no meaning or purpose. Like i just want to make my mom proud. That plain Jane, afraid to fly never landed lyric was obvious to me in parent - child dynamic.

  • @tp5776
    @tp5776 3 ปีที่แล้ว

While his mother was on earth her son was her shooting star and he had a permeant scar. She now is in a realm of perfection and he is comparing her new sprit world to our imperfection. At the same time this gives him inspiration to fly the best he can while here on earth. Mostly this song was the gate that gave him everything his mother ever wished for him. It's a beautiful song that embodies the sprit of someone that loved us and is now gone. It's hard to lose someone you love, but their love for you is always everywhere.

To me this song is about when one of my close friends tried to commit suicide. I thought she died, which I blamed myself for because of what I said. At the time I was suicidal myself, and I told her that I wouldn't hate her if she when through with it. Later that evening I found out that she was still alive and well. We didn't talk too much after. The song reminds me of how it still feels like she's around sometimes, even though I know she still is alive, because it wasn't until a year after her suicide attempt that I really realized everything. I never was able to get over the feeling that she died. This song helped me with that. All the lines relate so much to how it felt.

Pretty sure when he says that about the permanent scar, he's talking about about her cancer scars. I have cancer scars on my body and I imagine my girls' would say that about me, that I'm still out there somewhere, but without having suffered from cancer and therefore, no permanent scars. I didn't know that's what the song was about but now it means much more to me!

I heard an interview years ago saying that this was about Moynihan's mom, and I actually understood it better after I heard that. I took that line about the "plain jane" idea as mothers often think of their kids as being these wonderful acts of creation and his thought was after all the great stuff she's seen in that other place would she she still think he's great. As for the "permanent scar" piece, when we talk about permanent scars we are usually talking about something psychological. I wondered if what he was saying was did you find beings out there that were perfect and not like the members of his family or him, scarred in someway by life.
