I'm not good at color grading so out-of-camera works for me. Regarding the footage with the boat moving and the rocks on the shore, was that straight out of camera and which lens did you use? The colors and resolution on those is great. This would be my first MFT experience so I'm researching heavily. Many thanks.
The original autofocus from what I understand (but didn't test) was pretty terrible from all reports so their firmware upgrades seems to have fixed it and it works as good as my old sony camera. :)
I also use OMD Mark II and have GH5s. They are both essential bodies for my work. Your explanations are always helpful, and I particularly appreciate your references to people who have brought cameras, lenses, techniques, etc., to your attention and the links in the notes.
Just misplaced my Panasonic G9. Need a replacement and was going to buy a 2nd G9. I also have a bunch of M43 lenses so the EM1 Mii is a good choice. Snagged an EM1 Mii at a really good price. Now I’m trying to set the body up the way I want it. This body has been flying under the radar for a while. With the iii and iiiX making this franchise even better I am glad to have scored a cheap body. I’ve used other Olympus bodies and the two thing I love are the IBIS and the colors SOOC. My take is you can’t go wrong buying this body. Don’t tell other people about this camera until you have scored a body of your own. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
The AF looked good, not quite Sony good but close enough it shouldn’t matter, plus you have some of the best IBIS and nice colours! There is a used one at a local camera store that is very appealing, but debating on spending a bit (ok, a lot) more and go for a new OM5. Similar or slightly better specs, but more important for me quite a bit smaller. Still, even in 2023 the MK II a is such a great deal and has almost all the features most folks would use. @@KallusGarnet can a third party do it with an adapter and software, if it worked it would sellout for years, same for Panasonic’s s series. Is there a patent reason why Panasonic refuses any other focus system, licensing, or just ego and pride? They know all of there users are demanding it for over a decade now, maybe financials.
Just recently purchased the GH5S was really hoping to get ibis in another camera but also with reliable auto focus coming from Cannon just ordered minefor talking head shots thanks bro✌️
I owned and loved Olympus jpeg colours (better than GH5). However I am amazed how superior your GH5s / 12mm f1.4 footage compared Oly EM1. My take from your reviews is , “hard to ignore quality GH5s and no need to switch to full frame and sacrifice portability.
Thanks, Sadik. The GH5 and 12mm f/1.4 is a better image than this for sure. The sensor is far better in the GH5s but remember I have not done anything to the image on this one at all either so it can be tweaked for more saturation etc. This camera will only be used when I really need to shoot videos where I need to trust the autofocus completely. :)
Hi mate - very good review as always. For me the biggest letdown in video terms is codec - It's not constant which you can see in faster scenarios. Also I don't know if it was only my problem,but auto white ballance was always very inacurate in comparison to Panasonic.
I don't like the white balance at all with the stock camera settings. Once I bring down the green to -5 and red to -4 it works far better. It did take a bit of messing around with though to get these out of camera results.
For me the problem with this camera is the amount of video files that create, as it splits it in 4GB files. That makes very difficult to find your videos or manage your workflow. Don't you find this an issue Geeky?
For short clips under 4.6gb it won't split the files in UHD mode. C4K will split files more due to the increased bitrate. For this sort of shoot it didn't reach that once. :)
Do you think you will ever do a review of the OM-1? There is a real shortage of OM-1 reviews for video out there that go into good detail about the autofocus, stabilization, dynamic range and rolling shutter.
I don't know. I don't think I will get to borrow one from a shop or anything, but if the opportunity comes up, I will for sure. Its almost like the reviews on the cameras were all asked not to showcase the stuff we were most interested in. I'll see what I can do down the track if the opportunity comes up.
so we can reduce in camera sharpening in the menu? i watched camera conspiracy video about olympus camera and he said there is no settings in camera that allow us to reduce in camera sharpening

I haven't sourced one yet but there's definitely ones listed on eBay in Australia. Grab that plus any of the Panasonic GH5 style power adaptors and you should be in business. (that's my plan coming up) Double check the voltages to make sure though. If you search for the battery type on eBay it comes right up.
I’m really curious how this camera would perform when paired with the panasonic 20mm f/1.7 - i love the look of that lens but I had to sell it because it doesn’t work with C-AF. Although it does work in video mode weirdly enough, it hunts so much. Does it work better on a recent Olympus body??
Sadly, the 20mm F/1.7 AF sucks. I owned that lens and it was the only one that wouldn't autofocus properly out of all of them. The 20mm looks awesome but the autofocus never worked properly. It's something to do with it only being good in AFF mode rather than AFC.

But owerall its amazing and i own one chose it ower cannon m50 i think it was a dumb 🤓 smart move. But i think its better value than most camera out there got it for 850 bucks or 720 euros used lightly, very satified.

The Sony A7C grip sucks. I picked up a Sony A7C and it was terrible in the hand. I think it's pretty much overpriced as well considering there's next to nothing about it that's cutting edge.

so this answers the question that the autofocus is bad on mft because of software and not the lenses. Great news.

Panasonic needs to license Olympus autofocus for their gh and s series cameras immediately, or make an add on adapter.
I Have the em1 m1, my first camera. For video I buy a gh4r and after a gh5. But I buy also an em1 m2 for photo and autofocus video, the best.

Panasonic Lumix need to upgrade the autofocus in the gh5 and gh5s to phase Detection.
100% If they did, Panasonic would be killing it in terms of camera sales. Even their old cameras would sell like mad.

Love my EM1x for video despite the lack of video features it kills the GH5 with AF and IBIS

Somewhat confused. If the autofocus is so great, why does your face go out of focus as you walk towards the camera in the opening shot?
You're looking at the focus pull. The accuracy is spot on. For static subjects there's no pulsing or second-guessing.

Probably not at this stage. I might have a GH6 coming in soon for a review. I'd love to try the OM-1, as they look really good.
