The problem with the sticking primers is with the geometry of the decapping pin. Lyman/RCBS/Dillon who use a headed pin, it often has a flat or slightly domed end. I tend to grind the edge off so the pin is more pointed. You don't want to make it sharp you really just want to break enough of the edge so that the anvil inside the primer won't stick to the pin. The other option is using one of the older style spring loaded Dillon decapping rods. These will kinda fling the primer out the bottom of the case so it can't stick to the rod and be pulled back up to jam the machine.
If your cases have been polished in walnut or especially corn cob, a bit of media can get caught in the flash hole. During decapping, the grain of media gets smashed between the pin and the primer’s anvil and can cause the primer to stick to the pin. As the case is withdrawn from the die, the spent primer pulls back into the case. Personally, I got the APP to decap dirty brass which I then wet pin tumble- avoids getting primer residue and grit on my big progressive. Alternately, Dillon’s dies use a spring loaded decap pin. The spring loads up under the load of the primer pressing out, then snaps the primer off the pin.
Hey Jim, I have not. I normally shoot copper plated so haven't had the need to try. Maybe I'll pick up some lead and give it a try. I do have everything to do a swaging video so look out for that. Thanks for watching!
@@ringsteeltv3179 ya. I just got my APP today. I use the standard Lee universal deprimer. Works like a charm. I also have the swage setup and its working really smooth for me. Need to print out a part or two to keep the thing from dumping too many cases when the tube is low on 223 cases.
Got my app this weekend and decapped about 2500 9 yesterday. I got closer to 6 percent upside down with collator on the four tube set up. Are you doing really small hand fulls? I loaded it up pretty good. Used lee universal decapper and only had hang ups on crimped primers as pin slid.
Hey KPbikerider. You know you just reminded me of a modification I did to my collator that I completely forgot about. I just moved my collator from my Lee Pro 1000 over when I did the video. I did this modification maybe 3 or 4 years ago and is why I'm having better luck. Here is a link that explains it but basically install some PEX tubing in the collator. I'll do a video on this. It's super cheap and easy. Honestly Lee should include these. th-cam.com/video/FfeFaz-gmLU/w-d-xo.html
@@ringsteeltv3179 Awesome! Thanks for the easy fix. What are you doing for 223? The american accurate one looked promising but seems unavailable everywhere. Maybe they are no longer around.
On the .223 I'm just hand filling the tubes. I also shoot 6.5 Grendel and need to see if they will load in the tubes. I looked for the American Accurate one also but never found one. I'd like to see if I could find a funnel for the single tube it came with. I think it would be way easier to drop the 223 in a funnel base first and have it slide into the tube vs having to put the case into the tube everytime. Maybe a pipe dream :)
Paul mine has the shortest one on it for 9mm. I think the only requirement is that you use the tallest riser that still allows the case mouth to be above it. Thanks for watching! Once the snow moves in I'll be focused on more reloading videos.
Were you ever able to pinpoint the problem on having the primer being stuck? I agree with those below, it is probably getting sucked back up into the case but I see one person that says make the decapper blunt and another which says make it pointy. Just thought I would ask since you made the video for us.
7 months old but this happened to me, you can see it "bends out" but doesn't drop(this is with a lee decapping die). All i did to fix it was drop the pin down a tiny but and worked just fine.
You absolutely could use a case sizing die with decapper installed. In my case I like to clean them after depriming to get the primer pockets cleaned then run them through my progressive which handles case sizing.
Try blunting the nose of your decapping pin, the primer is getting stuck on the pin then the pin is pulling it slight back up into the primer pocket and its getting stuck, a blunt nose will fix it.
@@ringsteeltv3179 some primers are picky, Usually blunt nose works 90% of the time for me with no issues, but I do have a skinny decapping pin that has been turned down for aguila brass and some fiocchi and anything that can have offset pin holes and for those primers that like to stick on pins but the smaller point will work on those and some others. If you hold a couple spent primers up to the pins and just hand press with some force and they stick then you know you have to change the pin tip more, make sure they are all falling off by gravity even when force is applied, you will notice how some anvils in the primers will grab those pins.
Rounding the head on the decapping pin will eliminate the issue. I had it as well and after rounding the problem went away. After bending the pin on the APP, I ordered replacement pins from Squirrel Daddy that are rounded and case hardened.
The collator does not work with 223. You can leave the collator on and feed them into the tubes but the case is too long to tip up into the tubes on its own. American Accurate made an aftermarket one that would load rifle brass but I think its long been off the market. If you find one I'd love to have it!
Hey Tom interesting you should ask because I've been looking for a case collator that would work with 223 and found the "New Design American Accurate Collator for Lee PRO 1000 and Loadmaster Press" on Ebay and have been testing it with 223. It works great with 223 but not as well with 9mm. I do plan a video showing this soon.
Thanks for heads up I'm going to see if I can get one. I've got a new video planned soon with the swager on the APP press. Hoping to do an update on the decapping then also.
I love the APP for depriming 👍 I have the same issue with the primers getting hung up. Even moving the decapping pin down didn't seem to fix it. Great video quality too. Do you mind me asking what camera you use? I'm just using an old Nokia 928 cell phone with a tripod for now. A decent camera with an external mic is spendy!
Believe it or not 100% of my videos are done with my Samsung Note 9. All editing is also done on the phone and uploaded directly to youtube using the phone.
@@ringsteeltv3179 Well it sure does a nice job! One of these days I'll have to upgrade. I work remotely all the time and where we live there's no cell coverage, so I just don't have the need for one. I have a $10 a month plan just so the thing works when I leave the house and 1/2 the time I forget it anyways 🤣
9mm seem to slide through the mechanism pretty good, but 40SW not so much. Both calibers use the same shell holder and the lead in needs to be opened up more for the 40SW. The shell holder on mine sits slightly lower than the feed ramp and is just enough to bind the base of the 40SW case. I tried with a couple different files but the shell holders are hardened steel and difficult to remove material.
Phil, I wonder if you have seen the following on the Lee website. The new X-Press shellholder might be all you need. Not sure if it applies to you but thought I'd pass it on. The below is copied directly from the Lee website. 2) Several users had trouble with cases reliably entering and passing through the X-press shell holder. The cause of problem is the shell holder does not freely rotate. When a case with the slightest nick on the rim or extractor groove or any sort of distortion tries to enter the shell holder it binds. The harder it binds the harder the fingers grip the case. We have a solution that completely solves the problem. We have increased the chamfer on the bottom of the X-Press shell holder. This prevents the detent from applying any pressure on the shell holder and allows free rotation in the shell holder adaptor. Until we can fill the pipeline with these new shell holders you can simply remove the detent from the shell holder adaptor (see left). Replace the detent if you are using standard press shell holders or bullet sizer punch. When the shell holder is free to rotate cases will flow like water through the X-press shell holder.
@@ringsteeltv3179 Thanks for pointing that out. I had not read that. I did finally get 40SW to run smooth by using a round dremel stone slightly larger than a 9mm case to slightly grind the inside of the jaws so the case has more contact with the jaws. Now the case doesn't tip or lift off the ramp. Also used a dremel cutting wheel and small files on the shell holder on one side to open up the lead in slightly. With these changes I was able to size 420 40SW cases last night in 18 min and that included filling the collator and shaking the bullets down the tubes. I like this thing!!

Thanks for watching. Its a brilliant piece of gear.

Glad you enjoyed it. I will be doing a full workup of 223 on this press in a future video.
usually if you round the edges a little of the decapping pin, it won't suck it back up into the case nearly as much, from what i hear.
