  • In this video: My full talk given to a local photographer's group -- the Professional Photographers of Middle Tennessee -- presented on June 11, 2024 at The Pixel Connection camera store in Nashville, Tennessee.
I talked on the subject of how I developed a career selling prints, mostly outside the gallery system. I offered some personal background, a look at some of my work, and the key decisions I had to make along the way to grow my business as an artist.

Thanks so much, Keith. You were very generous with a lot of useful information. Inspiring too! And by the way--truly--you do a very good job at presenting to a crowd, because you're honest and down to earth. Thanks again!

Keith was kind enough to give me an opinion of my photos a few years ago and I've followed his work ever since. I knew that this talk was coming up and was hoping that it would appear online sometime, so I'm delighted to see this. Find this so helpful especially as I've decided to commit more to the dark(black and white) ;-) side of photography.

    Hi, Keith.
    What an interesting video.
I now have a bit of an idea of who and what you are.
And I have to be honest, this is not much news to me because you are exactly what I imagine.
We have two things in common, the love for photography and you have the same hairdresser as me 😀
You can see you were nervous and it showed, buddy.
But with the work you present, you don't have to be that way at all.
    I really enjoyed watching this.
And I have even more respect for you than I already had.
Hopefully, I can watch many more videos from you.
You are an inspiration to me and you always will be.
I hope you won't forget me when you really become "famous".
Thank you for this video, friend.
Sincere warm greetings from the Netherlands,
    Antoine.
PS Say hi to Teena from me.

stumbled on your video this morning, loved it. I happen to be your age and also a Army brat and also was in Germany in early 60's. Kasierslauntern to be exact "K Town" as it was known.

The only name I can recall my parents mentioning was Idar-Oberstein, but growing up with the military kids, I remember a lot of my friends having lived in K-Town. What's wild is it's totally possible our Dads may have known each other.

He was, but my mom settled us in central Texas when he was stationed at Fort Hood in the early 70s, and we stayed there while he went back and forth to various assignments in Asia and elsewhere until retirement.

I find it interesting how many galleries I go in and the prints are terrible. Noisy, out of focus, etc. Started doing art fairs this year so that is fun. I didn't realize how hard it is to get into them.

Yes I haven't done art fairs but I hear that many of them are VERY competitive!

I’m not sure that I am buying that shyness story, because you have the presence of a well seasoned presenter, very nice job. But I do have a question, you made the statement that your blog should be separate from your website and be happy to discuss that, but nobody asked the question, at least on the video, anyway, if you would comment on that, I would appreciate it. I also believe that you must have some kind of staff at home to keep up with all the work, because from what I see, you got more than one man can handle, and that’s a good thing!

Thanks I can assure you I was very nervous! I’ll try to briefly explain the separate blog. My e-commerce website has its own blog which I now use only for news or photo updates. Previously I posted some stories on there that were tangential to photography-an example was a published a blog post about the color haint blue on the porches of old houses in Charleston and I used my photos in the blog post thinking people might buy prints. The blog post exploded and for a while was the top story on the internet about haint blue, but I never sold a single picture. I realized it was about context. People came to learn about haints and haint blue and had zero interest in photographs. So I decided to keep my e-commerce page all in the context of photography and I started the second blog to talk about a wide variety of photo related or adjacent stories and I put ads and affiliate links on it, which I would never do on my professional portfolio site. I hope that explains it
