  • Fine-art photographer Lynn Saville was educated at Duke University and Pratt Institute. Saville specializes in photographing cities and rural settings at twilight and dawn, or as she describes it, “the boundary times between night and day.” Her photographs are published in four monographs: Acquainted With the Night(Rizzoli, 1997); Night/Shift, with an introduction by Arthur C. Danto (Random House/Monacelli, 2009); Dark City, with an introduction by award winning critic Geoff Dyer (Damiani, Bologna, 2015) and Lost: New York (Kris Graves Projects, New York, 2018). Saville’s photography is represented by the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York and is in the permanent art collections of major museums, corporations, and individuals. She lives in New York City with her husband, the poet Philip Fried.

It is unfair that someone who is such a great photographer is so articulate and insightful as well! Thanks for this.

Thank you for this. I love Lynn's work (her monograph "Night/Shift" is magnificent) and her 5 selections are sublime.

I never noticed the crosses in that Moonrise over Hernandez, I never thought of zooming in. I enjoyed hearing her talk. Thanks. Enjoying your channel.

Leland, it was a while before I saw them as well. That's when I started to recognize the brilliance of the image. Otherwise it's just a landscape - a lovely one, but nothing special, if not for the crosses.

interesting. even seeing the crosses now i dont think they make that picture to me. i like space so seeing the moon and the white cloud wisping over a small lil town makes it for me. i have a picture i took ( back of the hollywood sign , LA in the distance) hanging in my guest bathroom, eveyone says they love it, my best picture ever, it's their favorite picture i took, to me its good but not my favorite. beauty is in the eye of the beholder@@TheCritHouse

Another good one! I was not familiar with Lynn Saville, but I'm intrigued by her style. The Julius Schulman image looks eerily like the house of Harry Bosch from the series "Bosch".

I didn't watch Bosch, but it's very likely that it was influenced by the Schulman image, which is well known in the architectural photography world.
