50 years ago this week Diana Ross officially exited The Supremes and became a solo artist and superstar. It was the end of an era. Rumor had it that the late Luther Vandross cried when Diana Ross left the Supremes. RIP Flo Ballard RIP Luther Vandross
Diana has a gorgeous voice, she sounds like an angel when she sings and like a queen when she talks. So intelligent, well spoken, and beautiful. To be fair, that set of statements could apply to any one of the Supremes. Florence will always be my fave, but oooh, mercy, ooh wee baby, do I get chills whenever Diana talks and sings! Miss Ross, you're trying to seduce me! This is sick Miss Ross, my parents used to listen to your records!
The greatest female singing group in history! Diana Ross was so elegant when she was talking to Ed and it was sweet that she bestowed a kiss of Thanks on him. The only thing that was out of place was seeing Cindy Birdsong in Florence Ballad’s place. Sadly, A time we will never see again in television ..
The medley was a hot mess...the songs were all over the place and they didn't sing my favorites like Forever Came Today, I'm Living In Shame, No Matter What Sign You Are, Love is Like an Itching in My Heart...and then at 3:47 Cindy had to swerve to avoid running head on into Mary when they circled around Miss Ross and then Cindy got so flustered that you can see her tripping over her dress as she almost fell backwards on her behind at 3:48.
The Supremes broke the mold and created a real path for girl groups to succeed in music. They were the first group of women to match any male group and even do better. Women in music today, owe a lot to the Supremes.
What a lot of people don't know or remember is that after Florence Ballard got fired in 1967, Mary Wilson nor Cindy Birdsong sang on any other Supreme Hits. The Andantes who like The Funk Brothers were the best unknown folks at Motown sang background. Also after Holland Dozier Holland left, The Supremes popularity on the charts waned. I sometimes look at The UK Girl Group Girls Aloud and wonder if anyone ever told them how lucky they were that they all sang Lead at lest once. Also don't you notice that although Ed Sullivan acknowledged that Diana Ross would continue as a Solo Act, he didn't talk about Mary or Cindy.
Truly the best female group of all time! Super, masterful, humungous gifted and talented beautiful, authentic Artists! God's gift to the universe!! Blessings

I count myself lucky to have lived thru their incredible string of hits. And yeah, I had a crush on Diana.
Mark Klein I enjoy this era as well. And No I did not have a crush on Diana Ross. However, Florence had a angelic voice. And her demise was so sad. She died on welfare with three children living with her Mother. Premature death, media never discuss the cause of death.
A small voice but she could effeminately sing and had rhythm. Diana a true supreme! .... They were all great in their own right. The Supremes are truly an iconic group.
My diva right here. I love Diana she is such a classy lady. The Supremes were a fantastic group. Amazing. I still listen to the my CD collection and it's 2018 now. Quality music this is.
Beautiful then, now and forever.....The music still gives me goose bumps.....This fantastic group and their music will live on forever......Thank you Ms Ross and the Supremes...........Patrick ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💯%
Please, just like the Hollywood machine these people were no different than you or me. They were kids taught how to walk, talk, act, dress and perform. All that was manufactured. Once they were in their environment they drank, smoked, cussed, slept around, etc.
Not all of it, some things are not taught, and those things do come through. We're not talking about them being regular people, because they were, they are. But not everyone is the same. Some people have it, some don't.
Ed Sullivan and Dick Clark were extremely important to Motown in an era when rock and roll might have been appreciated as a profit generator, but still wasn't regarded yet as a lasting art form. Especially with racism as an issue as well. Berry and Barney Ales were fully aware what a powerful tool TV was in helping move records in 1960s, and when invitations were extended for any of Motown's acts, the pressure was on and the rehearsals detailed and extensive.
Absolutely. You can tell the ladies worked hard to perfect their routine and live vocals. They hit every mark and know exactly what camera shots are being taken - especially Diana. This is a charming and nostalgic performance by one of the great musical act of that legendary decade.
Exactly, in the first time probably in forever, musicians were not limited by their color. Motown acts were headlong huge shows, groups like The Temptations, Supremes & the Four Tops were frequently appearing on TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, Ready Steady Go & The Hollywood Palace
This song makes me feel very emotional, beacause when i hear it that reminds me of the time when they where happier, in the early 60's, of their swing, in the time of the ORIGINAL supremes...reminds of the sweet Flo's jokes, her attitude and their innocence, of diana's very sweet voice and mary's sensuality!.. these girls are and will always be unforgettable!!
Lynda Anthony Yes i’m very young compared to a lot of the people that grew up listening to The Supremes in their prime, i am 20, but still i am very aware of the racism and segregation in those times, i know the 60’s weren’t perfect.
Jean Terrell has the sweetest and most soulful voice.Mary has a husky and commanding voice.Cindy has a strange but elegant voice.Florence had a brassy and sensual voice
I always cry when i see their LAST appearance as a group on stage.. It's just sad remembering all the years of joy they have been through.. It starts all flashing on my head.. And it really makes me sad..
You could see Diana feeling emotional about the separation.... especially the slight nod she gives Mary before she moves out front. They really did it all.
@@clemsonbloke Yes, what's your point? Like Beyonce, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Justin Timberlake, John Lennon etc...CHOSE to leave their groups.
Y'all does Diana really take Mary's hand at the end of "Someday We'll Be Together? I watched the song over and over. It LOOKS like they hold hands... and right before she appears to "let go" she looks at Mary. sniff, sniff! Was she thinking of December 27, 1964 when she and Mary first graced the stage of The Ed Sullivan show? Wow, they were 6 days shy of their 5th anniversary... they had shared so much, and now the "Supremes Dream" they had created a decade before was coming to an end.

I just discovered today, 29 September 2017, that Diana Ross and I attended high school together. CASS TECHNICAL high school in Detroit. She was graduated in January 1962, and I was graduated six months later. I have no memory of her, of course, since I was a geek and nerd before those terms came into use. I've heard that also..Sullivan was well known for being a tough character who rarely warmed up to anyone and couldn't case less about mingling with the Hollywood crowd..Sullivan new talent when he saw it and featured many acts of color on his show such as Jackie Wilson and Della Reese who appeared on his show 17 times..
It is clear Ed was fond of the Supremes. They had excellent songs that had wide appeal. Having the Supremes on his show was a sure fire ratings draw. That and the ladies never acted in crude or unprofessional manners. Ed never had to worry that any of the Supremes would do anything less than a professional show. Motown and the Supremes were well aware of the importance of the enormous Sullivan audience to selling their music to America.
How big/old was The Women where he came from ? That is what they called Black men ( Boys) and Women ( girls ) back then ... it had nothing to do with fondness ... IF he was Fond of them he would have called them the Women !!!
The Supremes and Ed Sullivan are always so cute together. I love Ed Sullivan, he's such a classy, nice, charming man when introducing the acts on his show, I hope I'm like him when I'm old

Paul Compme they were never back up singers. Diana Ross was a manufactured singer who's voice was very commercial during the 60s. It faltered once the decade was over with.
@@DJDiscoCat no Mary did not sing on love child. She was actually on vacation when they recorded love child and was shocked to find out when she got back that they had already recorded love child without her. This came from Mary Wilson herself per her book dreamgirls my life as a supreme/supreme faith. I just finished reading it that's the only reason I know lol
U skipped a part. She went to LA to close on her house for her move to California then she went in vacation. She had told Berry before Love Child was written.
Whenever I hear this song, my mind wanders to Homer's Odyssey, how Odysseus's ship sails near the island of the Sirens, whose beautiful song lured sailors close only to be dashed on the jagged rocks. When the crew fastened Odysseus to the main mast as they sailed past, THIS is what he sees and hears. You cannot tell me otherwise, three beautiful women with the perfect song. I know reality is far different. I know Mary and Cindy weren't in the studio when Diana recorded this song with Johnny Bristol. I know Diana was a perfectionist and she and Mary were shoving each other at the Motown 25 Special. I know we mortals are imperfect, and the stories we fasten together from scraps of reality can't possibly match the transcendence of our dreams. But you can't tell me, if the blind poet were alive today, sitting at home, had CBS on the TV on a given night in January 1970, he wouldn't say the same. I confess my undying love for Diana on this page.
The song was recorded solo by Diana and intended to be her first solo single release. Gordy changed the plan- it was the perfect fit for the Supremes swan song- even if it only featured Miss Ross...
