Personally, this didn't even sound insulting. He was more insulting himself, is how I heard it. The British can be so self-deprecating (plus he has mental health problems) so it sounds like he was just putting himself down for not being as excited. But yeah, he was surely poking at her a little.
I think he refers to the fact that the R&R HOF is a sham...it is not like it's listeners choice...it a bunch of people who in there overblown opined view decide who is " in"...many great bands have been skipped.
This is why TR&RHOF is a farce as far as fans go .

I think she was not overzealous, but rather just excited to meet a cool guy like Robert. I also feel that Robert was not being rude but was just being himself. What happened here is that two different personalities met with each other and simply bounced off of each other like opposing magnets. We don't need to take his or her side. There are no sides to take.

I think he was awesome.
I work in customer service and it's the same thing. After a while, you get used to saying the same thing to everyone. An older man answered me differently last week, when I asked how he was doing, he truthfully said life wasnt going well for him. Instead of being my genuine self , I stayed in my "positive, overzealous" role behind the counter and I regret not being assertive enough to give him the respect he deserved. I will try harder next time.

It's no secret that Robert isn't fond of social interactions. That's just how he is and he's not afraid to show it. I respect that. I saw them in concert a couple of years ago, and though I fantasized about meeting them and getting an autograph, I knew it wasn't going to happen. After their final number, Robert said, "You've been very sweet," and poof, they were gone. C'est la vie.

I love this guy, the music and looks made him unique from other singers of the 80s.
And yet he STOLE his "look" from Siouxsie Sioux, lol.
Don't get me wrong. I love the Cure. But you can't help but see that (and there are videos here on YT that show the band, in their infancy, where Robert is sporting a kind-of flat-top haircut, more like David Gahan, and no lipstick or eyeliner; looked like a normal bloke). Siouxsie was clearly an influence on Robert when he was their guitarist for a time.
Hmmm , this reminds me of an empty-headed shrieking ‘journalist’ , backstage at an open-air event prior to stage entrance asking Freddie Mercury what it was like to perform in front of 65000 adoring fans at Milton Keynes at the height of their commercial fame in the 1990s. ‘Don’t know . I haven’t done it yet’. Classic British understatement , and it shut her up instantly .

He was bombarded by all the attention and celebration. Different time zones, and all flashbulbs shooting at you. He was rubbing his face at the beginning, maybe from anxiety. I've seen him in other relaxed interviews, and was fantastic. It was bad timing to talk..

Gary from GLASGOW By most accounts of Robert Smith, I respectfully disagree with you. I think he tolerated her rather well. He’s not the pretentious high fiving, back slapping, self congratulatory type, and batted her shrill over exuberance away perfectly. A funny moment from an introverted, but lovely guy.

Looking at this a second time I can see that she really enjoyed the interaction and so did he. They both have a job to do and a role to play and allowed each other to play it as they wanted. They are both comfortable all the way through the interview.

Not in this case, definitely not. Smith is a recovering alcoholic, and his alcoholism was integral to The Cure's early music and an unfortunate contributor to their early appeal and success. It contributed to him continuing to drink, and he was a HEAVY drinker. An interviewer casually tossing out a remark about needing a drink is probably one of the more tone deaf things a person could say to Smith. It demonstrates they have no insight into him, or his history, and have done no research; they are just putting on the face and churning through the line of celebrities. I'm betting his reaction was genuine. It looked to me like she had his skin crawling, frankly.

I think she did great. A fan. And had a job to do. What fan wouldn't want to get to just exchange a few words with him. No monopoly on what a fan is. My guess would be he does appreciate them all..giddy depressed angry happy blah blah one of the best all time bands...just one fans opinion. just a fan.
