You should absolutely upgrade, for $79.00. Since the release of this video, with the return of Jeromy Young, the decision was to release AtomOS11 for the original Ninja V and V+ (base OS11 with new GUI but no new features is free). For $79 (Ninja V) and $129 (Ninja V+), you receive it all - EL Zone, ARRI false color, SegmentPro, PlaybackAssist, RecordAssist, Wi-Fi 6 as well as the H.265 and ProRes RAW codecs bundled in for free! Ninja V+ owners also get Wi-Fi 6E, ProRes RAW Dual-Record and SDI Cine (these last are features for the Atomos Connect in combination).

Great job on the video. How loud are the new ones compared to the original? At 4k30fps the original's fan can get pretty loud so I'm wonder if the new ones are quieter in 4k recording? Also, do the new ones get as hot to the touch at 4k?
A lot of the time I do hands-on recordings where my rig is close to what I'm recording and have a microphone recording what I say. If the new ones are quieter that would be a nice plus.
From what I’ve noticed, all three are very similar in fan noise and heat build up!

Many of the features on the new Ninjas are now available on the old model as of the most recent firmware. It will gice you the latest operating system and for $79 you'll get the other features like EL Zone.
Thanks for the video. I have the original Ninja V and have used it occasionally with my Nikon Z6II. Just got a Z8 and Atomos hasn't officially announced support for Z8 (or Z9) so not sure if I'll upgrade (or at least wait a little bit).
I'm in the same boat, z6ii and z8 on its way. Planning to shoot 8k for corporate gigs for flexibility.
Hey Victor, can you provide some clarity on the filename matching? I'm wondering when externally and internally recording at the same time, will the filenames match on the Ninja, or just the Ninja Ultra? You mentioned over SDI? If I use HDMI the file names will be different, and there wont be a convenient way to sync the footage? Hope that makes sense! Thank you!
Yeah mostly for high end cine cams with SDI! Hdmi we won’t be able to get the info out from the camera.

When using the c2c workflow with the ninja v can you record ProRes simultaneously to the h.265 proxies going to the cloud? Is that limited to the ultra?
Limited to new ninja and the ultra. Ninja v can only do h.264 for proxies

If I get the new ninja for my fx30 and use it as a monitoring tool in UHD but still decide to record internal slog 3 will I mess up my footage? By mess up, I mean being tricked by my eyes while shooting and viewing the images through UHD and having an unexpected 4k image when I offload footage at home. I want to use it to preview luts and have a monitor while shooting.

You can’t go wrong with any of them! Basically very similar now. You can get the paid firmware upgrade for the older units. Makes them all similar unless you do Camera to cloud.

I was wondering if it's possible to connect a Ninja to Hasselblad X2D (which doesn't have video recording capabilities nor does it have a HDMI), is there a way to connect and record via wifi or usb-c?
Nope, it dont do usb C. SATA all the way unfortunately. Aparently they still think its 2005 at Atomos.
I am filming on a Sony A7S3 camera. If I shoot on 4K 120FPS, Which monitor can playback this footage? Not looking for internal recording
It will playback but it’ll be on 4k60. It still looks decent for viewing purposes

Great review, you answer all the questions someone would have on the benefits of getting the new version or not! Its so annoying to pay for services on a device you already own and paid for. They give you deliberately an unacceptable version of a service (720p for example) and have to pay to get a usable quality and it’s BS. So sick of getting subscription fee’d to DEATH!

That's very good information, thank you! I feel my Sony FX3 internal footage just doesn't hold grading well, especially if I try to grade for HDR.
FX3's internal footage should hold well as long as you're not pushing it too hard like shifting reds to blue!
When you record internally and externally with Sony cams does it record to both sd cards and the monitor at the same time? Or just one sd card and the monitor? Thanks!

Now the video needs an update. Atomos has decided to upgrade the Atomos Ninja V/V+ with a base free OS 11 with companion OS11 Feature Pack that can be purchased to bring all the extra features. While the Ninja V/V+ are End of Sale, clearly not end of support and with the software upgrade available not necessarily a need to purchase new hardware at this time.
I really want to purchase from atomos but I’m hearing so much about overheating and loud fan noise. What monitor do you feel is best? Even if it’s not atomos.
if you just want a monitor (not a recorder), the best budget ones are feelworld. The Atomos Shinobi has been great in my kit. Lasted me years. High end monitors, you should look at smallHD!

The Log formats (Cine EI, Flexible ISO) are only available in 4K output resolution if RAW Output is set to On under HDMI Output Settings (which locks you in ProRes RAW which isn’t compatible with DaVinci Resolve…) It is strange that Log is restricted to HD when RAW Output is turned Off
You have the right idea though, changing a Picture Profile to SLog3, SGamut3 Cine (with Detail set at -7 to make it accurate) does the trick!
Only on dual recording though but otherwise if you’re just outputting to external (raw or non raw) it’ll output 4k.. once you turn on internal media recording you’d just have HD to the ninja.. sad but the workaround does pretty well!

Bro. The atomos ninja ultra looks cool and all but that luffy really caught my eye. I just started One Piece a month ago and I’m hooked.

Hey I have the fx30 and that problem that you mentioned does not happen to me. What I do is reacording only in the Ninja.
Yes, the problem only happens on dual recoding (internal and external) as showcased
were going to be using the Sony FX3 looking at this simce its not really practical price wise to buy SD cards that most are almost as Expensive as this monitor SSD for 1TB. We plan to do 4k 120fps and at the best file recording for best dynamic range and smoothest footage, interally record would be SCine pp5 or PP8, Gamma would be Cine also. but not recording under Cinema Log for coloring. i belive its the inbetween from Slog 3 and the full Cinema Log? (have to go back and look)
but If we record only on this SSDmonitor, is it reliable enough??? With out any issues!? Thats why SD cards are the most reiable because no skipping footage and you can have all your correct settings. asking for your opiniom?

nope! only have the 100% and 200% zoom

You mentioned that you aren’t able to upload 4k h.265 (C2C) , but I can’t find any subscription that allows the 4K upload, can you please explain how to make it work plz 🙏🙏
It’s the highest subscription they have. It’s not listed yet on the Atomos cloud studio but it does prop off 4k h265 to the cloud. You then can switch the setting to 4k on the Atomos cloud studio

Is it possible to record ProRes RAW with the Atomos Connect, and can files created as proxies be sent to the cloud while recording ProRes RAW?
yes it's the main feature of their camera to cloud. Check if it's part of their free plan but most of the cloud stuff is under their subscription plan

@@_markersfilm I'm not quite sure tbh I haven't tested it out on any panasonic cameras. I did get proxies with the raw 4.7K on the FX3 and FX30! Maybe it's the same with the S1H? Hope that helps!

You can. The issue is only dual recording.

I love your comprehensive review. I have the Ninja 5V and it is MEH. I only say that because I can not do touch focus on the display like I can on my Sony A7s iii. It is hard to believe that Atomos cannot write software that allows this function.

The Ninja V got the OS 11 update very recently. It's optional so if you want to stay on OS 10 you can, but OS 10 updates will stop ;-)

There were many complaints that the Atomos Ninja V screen could not serve as a good color assessment tool. The fact is that its screen had a slightly distorted color rendering. It displayed everything in warmer, yellow tones than it actually was. Does the new Atomos Ninja have this problem?

They need revamp the build of the monitor . The screws and pins that hold back of monitor in place are made really cheap and I hope they did something different with new one

I had the same thoughts in the beginning but it grew on me! BUT ALSO if I was dealing with product shoots that have reflections... I'd definitely prefer black over gold.
Question you need to ask yourself before buying is "How are the new features going to help me? Do I really need it?"
Atomos ninja is the only gear to have ever failed me on a shoot, I had 'skippy' the kangaroo symbol meaning the 'media was too slow' but I was using the 5 x mark up from retail 'angel bird' ssd so the media wasn't too slow.
This new one looks cool and I'm considering getting it but idk after getting burned like that.

Yeah, it's happened once to me. I always dual record externally and internally because of that issue. I think it's maybe due to the card slowing down when it's almost full? Or perhaps overheating?

Solid breakdown Dude! How does it work with NDI HD TX transmission? Does it count as an Atomos RemoteView where you have to use credits for transition, or can you connect wirelessly two Atomos Ninja directly via NDI HD TX transmission?
Thanks man! The NDI HD TX is different than the RemoteView (which uses credits). The NDI HD TX only transmits to a switcher. I believe you can transmit multiple ninja's to that same switcher. If I'm not mistaken, the NDI HD TX is a one time purchase upgrade and you can use it whenever without the use of credits. I haven't tested this so I'm just going off of what I know about it!
The RemoteView however is TX and RX with the use of the connect modules. You can turn the new ninja (and ultra) as either TX or RX. You can even have multiple TX devices (you can change the layout on remoteview panel) to be shown to 4 devices whether that's another ninja, laptop, ipad, or phone.

I hope I can use one Atomos Ninja contented to camera and being able to transmit video wirelessly to another one via NDI so it can be used as a director’s monitor. I can’t find answer whether it’s doable.
I also want to use it to send an image to iPad without paying for that with credits. One time pay, ok, but not constantly. @@CreateGreg

you should turn off HDMI info display! That's if you have a Sony camera. Other brands, I'm not too sure how to do.

@@VictorLaforteza The monitor supports 1080p 30fps, but some cameras will not output it (like the Sony A7S3). I have both that and an older lumix S1 which quite happily outputs 1080p 30fps.
you need to enable RAW out...
I think you missed the point. The problem is dual recording with different codecs on the ninja. Not all the time I want to shoot in RAW on the ninja and again, this works before the LOG shooting mode update.

One question if I may.: I have the new Ninja on my Canon R6 ii and for some reason EL-Zone and Arri false color are both disabled (grey) and I cant switch to them. Do you have by chance any clue why this would be? I might have to contact Atomos about this.
You’re welcome! And for the question hmmm I’m not too sure.. check the little settings in terms of inputs and your external monitor settings for the r6! Maybe there’s something there that’s causing it. Aside from that, check with Atomos!
@@VictorLaforteza Thanks man. It was indeed "hidden" in the input tab. I had to activate "LOG/HDR" over "Legalize". I understand that gives me less acurate colors on the live preview, which shouldn't matter when I rely on false colors for exposure anyhow?! Is that somewhat correct? 🤣

Bro, I'm gonna keep my atomos njnja v plus, those new ones has not significant differences. Atomos they need to fix some issues like the possibility to record 4k DCI 120 fps in Apple res hq, 422 not just in SDI RAW and make a new ninja v but with 2200 nits. Is noticeable they create a new Atomos to try to make money, doesn't think in make the improvement that the previous atomos did not have. Well I gonna wait to that improvement, otherwise I'll pass with those new babies.
Fair points! I feel like if someone is in the market for their first ninja the new ninja makes a bit more sense but for ninja V / V+ users, it's an upgrade that would be hard to justify depending on someone's needs.

Why Atomos? Why? They figured out how to stream to the cloud but couldn't figure out how to stream to a USB drive? And still with the standard form factor SSD drives? It's like they are oblivious to what is happening to storage in the 2020's.

nope, this is only the ninja V, Ninja (GOLD), and Ninja Ultra.. it's confusing, I know hahahah
Nobody seems to talk about the colour in-accuracy problem of these Ninja monitors. I have been using my Ninja V for years and it has that yellow/warm tint to it even after calibration. And when you throw in a LUT and monitor your image with via a LUT the contrast and colour looks nothing like what you get when you load the footage on your computer. Until they fix the colour inaccuracy issue, Ninja V is a big NO NO.

Nah, the black is the ninja V and then brown ones are the ninja and ninja ultra. It’s quite confusing at first

Yeah, most of their new wireless features require the connect module then a subscription or credits.
Like the $800 ninja ultra and the $400 connect wasn’t enough. Companies are only out here to rob people with subscriptions now. They don’t care about customers.
Why didn't they just push an update out for EL Zones etc? This is silly.. OS / UX is a simple sortware update..
