If you enjoy this video, give it a like and comment! Post-Notes: -Freezeezy "Park" - Accidently called it a Park when it " Peak". Misremembered its name. -5:37 - Accidently have the Beta and Final written in reverse
It went from an SNES Pirate pre-rendered isometric game similar to Super Mario RPG which was stuck in development for 5 years (first ideas came around 1989)... To a Pacman World kind-of game to a full 3D game with panoramic camera and everything and also the themes changed a lot. Mumbo is one of the best characters and he literally came from Mumbo Jumbo... A totally wild trip.
Changing this much of the course is pretty insane when you think about. If not for it being a gradual change with bringing in platforming and Banjo into Dream, while bringing the Pirates into Kazoo, one would just think the game was a cancelled game and they started a new project.
This is why I love all these guys from Rare. They were hella dedicated and the Stamper brothers were like the best bosses to keep the projects afloat like that.
3:58 - The gargoyle statue model was taken from the 3D polygon model for Dream on Nintendo 64, not the SGI render used on SNES. Rare were really good about re-using assets...such as the door from the Temple Test level being re-used as Grunty's chamber door in her tower!
I just want to say I loved this video and the part 1 as well. You released the Part 1 really soon after I beat Banjo for the first time, and as soon as I beat a game I have to just learn everything about it! So I am so excited for part 3 and I've subscribed so I won't miss any future content! These Banjo videos have been really enjoyable and are extremely well researched, so I'm excited to check out your other vids as well! Again, amazing video, I hope to see your channel continue to grow!
Before anyone knew the context behind it, the alpha levels were gassed up to mythical degrees on par with the Triforce rumors, completely unaware that it was the most unambitious form of the Banjo Kazooie we know. Goes to show the grass is always greener on the other side.
I feel this is the case for the most part with older builds of games. Alpha and beta builds may look cool, but unless they were removed for technical reasons, 7/10 times it was cause they weren't good enough for the story and presentation(2/10 for time constraints). Thankfully the technical reasons here only led to a better game haha
@AaAa-je5eo It was from the days of my own childhood, a very different time in gaming history, one where the internet wasn't at a point where video feed from your console could not be readily shared, common knowledge of how game programming and design actually worked was limited and information had no reliable means of being fact checked. Based on both alpha build trailers and the presence of the mark in the center of the pause screen Medallion slots, there was rampant speculation that there lay hidden a method to obtain a Triforce Key Item in Ocarina of Time. This merged with other schoolyard rumors based on the game's early trailers and the things in them that never appeared in the final game and was even artificially inflated by the hoaxing efforts of a few resourceful pranksters. As this supercell of wild conjecture passed by word of mouth on the playground and got churned by the shenanigans of the nascent internet, it swelled to a grandiosity akin to Atlantis or the Ark of the Covenant. Of course, it has been debunked time and again, and with the 2020 findings of the 2018 Nintendo Gigaleak, the origins of these charismatic miscellany have become much clearer, but countless romantics will swear that they know a guy who's found that El Dorado. It doesn't have the emotional dimension of wanting to find it as, say, preventing Aerith from dying, but I'd argue that the sheer scale and embellishment of these myriads of tall tales gives them much more of a mystique. Actually, I personally suspect that the plot point of searching for the Key of the Twilight in .hack//SIGN and Roots may have been inspired by the Triforce rumors.
that's what i'm thinking. I actually had a line about that in the video I decided not to use simply cause Rare hasn't ever really confirmed this despite how open they were on what was reused, but personally I think it probably was here.
I know Dream seems like it would be more of an action RPG if it released, but im glad it ended up not going in that direction. Banjo Kazooie was one of the most iconic games on earth. I'm actually happy they went with the platforming game it became.
I am glad with it leading to making such a legendary platformer as a result. While the RPG (Especially with the SNES' artstyle)would have been neat, I don't think it'd make anywhere near the impact this did.
Fun fact: The original Mumbo’s mountain theme is still technically in the final game as it’s used as the basis for the Gruntilda’s lair theme for it and inside the Termite mound, and it’s actually remixed in DK64 as Tiny’s tag barrel theme.
Pretty awesome. I already knew these facts but you made such a complete video, such a great coverage, great editing and everything. Just awesome. I can watch this again tomorrow during breakfast.
Thank you! Having thoroughly researched all of this, the info is just soooo all over the place. I'm glad I succeeded in being able to bring it all togehter to build a proper story here.
Just when I thought I knew everything about this games beta status, you come around around and show completly new things. Your stuff is always so amazing!
Yeah i've heard of that, but being that it is quite "alleged", I decided against bringing that up. As far as we know according to the Rare Replay videos, when Rare decided to reboot Dream into Kazoo, they just came up with a random name like Banjo and then blurted a bunch of other instruments to followed. Also yeah I do think that song was reused in Tooie as well haha
Multiple current & former Rare developers including Banjo-Kazooie director Gregg Mayles have publicly confirmed that Banjo was named after Banjo Yamauchi.
@@MacUser2-il2cx Originally "Kazoo" was going to be about collecting fruit, jinjos, and jigsaw pieces. At that point, the hero was already named Banjo.
Is it just me, or is the "Beta" and "Final" Sprial Mountain mixed up... I'm pretty sure Sprial Mountain on the left is the final version? Great video nonetheless, always watchibg your content when it airs.
18:31 So that’s where the same line in Mayaham Temple in Banjo-Tooie comes from! Looking at things, there seems to be a lot of unused tracks and voice lines that went unused in Banjo-Kazooie but were later used in Banjo-Tooie.
I do theorize this too. I actually had a line recorded saying this in the video but it was a bit too speculative since Rare hasn't confirmed it like they normally do, but I would say probably in reality.
5:37 The text erroneously labels the unfinished map as "Final" and the finished map as "Beta", it seems that the labels were accidentally swapped with each other into the wrong place.
@@TheObsessiveGamer It is probably not a big deal, really. It is mostly obvious which one is which anyway, even a viewer that hasn't played the game can probably figure it out but it is definitely obvious to anyone that has played it since anyone that has played it has at least seen Spiral Mountain so probably knows how it looks in the released version. The mistake is unlikely to mislead anyone.
Man, it's crazy that a stupid copywrite issues actually worked out for the better. I think we can all agree, Kazooie hits better then just Kazoo. And man, that early music. It was good but the tracks we got are just... somehow perfect. It's amazing how much just somehow clicked right with almost everything in this game. Hell, even the fact they had to drop the voice acting worked out for the best. I don't think these characters would be as iconic if they just had normal lines you know.
Imagine a Banjo-Kazooie game where all the traversal moves are unlocked for use anywhere in the map rather than just with specific tiles in specific places. Something more like Mario Odyssey.
@@TheObsessiveGamer that is a bad idea for Grunty Since in the bad ending of kazooie. when Grunty Steal Tooty Beauty it will also Turn grunty into a Furry bear to be like Tooty.
I don't not like the name 'Banjo-Kazooie", but I think 'Banjo-Kazoo' would have been a bit better. However, I think it's tragic that Tooty's name didn't remain Piccolo.
"Enemies of the stronger variety were placed here, such as The Bull and Conga, as these were enemies that were definitely on the much tougher side, they were moved to a different level" lol both of them were in the first world of the game. EDIT: I guess you're not wrong though, they were moved from the tutorial to the first level (and last level in the case of The Bull).
Is there a source for the trademark issues? Cause I'm a little skeptical on them. "Kazoo" isn't trademarked and would probably only be allowed to be trademarked if it was part of a greater title (such as "Banjo Kazoo" but not "Kazoo" on its own). But in the UK there's a car dealership called Cazoo which is spelled differently, so no conflicts should occur. As for Piccolo, I also don't think that would have been an issue as Nintendo has another character with that name in the Mario franchise. As well as a character with the name in the 90s cartoon seaQuest DSV. Usually for a character to be trademarked, its entire identity has to be protected not just its name. So they might have been in the clear so long as she wasn't an alien or green. I can't confirm, but both of these cases feel like they were being careful just in case, rather than because they were legally made to.
If you enjoy this video, give it a like and comment!
