After 12 long years, countless hours of manpower and donated dollars, the East Broad Top Railroad is finally back in steam! East Broad Top #16, a 1916 Baldwin-built 2-8-2 “Mikado” has returned to steam after a 3 year restoration under the coordination of the East Broad Top Foundation. As part of East Broad Top’s annual Winter Spectacular event, this year featured the strapping Mikado pulling both passenger excursions and a morning freight run to Colgate Grove and return. Thousands of people made pilgrimage to the railroad to witness history in the making, sparking renewed hopes that the continued efforts of both the East Broad Top Foundation and the Friends of the East Broad Top are in fact not in vain. I remember visiting PA.and family took me to ride the BTR back in the early 70s as a child. I remember to small townships it went through and being shocked at the names. Glad she is back on her tracks.

Yes, 3ft gauge, some portions were dual gauge for interchange with the Pennsylvania railroad but the entire East Broad Top was and still is 3ft gauge.

even the ICE rocks although there is a gyro system to dampen it, because even continous welded rail is not perfectly smooth.

I noticed it as well! I don't know if the new cars go though any sort of tuning, but it appears the first coach and combine were the ones rocking the most and neither had been lettered yet.

In Wisconsin we had a narrow gauge that had similar landscape to the Broad Top, oh how I wish it could get the same treatment, the Broad Top and this Wisconsin railroad had almost the same vibes too!

The foundation does plan to have all six Mikados in operation. 14 is currently the next in line.
