Thank you for sharing this. If you have any more, I'd (we'd) love to see it.

The speed of those small loading shovels is insane

the footage is being played at almost twice the speed it should be, very common for old film you see here on you tube. in the "old days" people were not going around like rabbits on coke, they were just as slow as we are now and the machines were slower, not faster.

Wonderful set of films. Say do the original 8mm's still exist? It would be neat to clean this up. Seems they partook in the 1940 fan trip events along with filming mining operations throughout the 40s and 50s. Genuinely rare stuff here, thank you for posting your telling a story that tho not forgotten is seldom seen or talked about without context

I had the copy that was put onto VHS which is what I was able to upload here. I'll have to circle back with my family up in the mountains to see where the originals are. Thanks for your kind words!

A little context is in order here. When? If cars are any guide it appears late 1940s or early 1950s.

My understanding is the early to mid 1950s. Thanks for your interest!

The plaque on the stone pillars, at the entrance to the flower garden, is dated 1951.

I will never complain about my job again. Could not imagine doing that kind of work.

Was this off of one of Mark Balkins tapes?

My family is from up there and worked the mine until it closed in the 1950s. I also had family who worked for the railroad. They were avid 8mm shooters. In the 90s, my grandfather had a lot of the family 8mm converted to VHS. This was the one that seemed good for upload here. It is possible that this stuff was mixed in with something from another source but I'm pretty confident it is from the family archives.
By the way, I loved Mark 1 Video back in the day.
Thanks for checking out the channel and hope you enjoyed this upload.

I heard there might be a lot more coal in that area than was ever mined, a guy by the name of Wayne told me that. There was a small stripping operation for the last several years at Alvan but the EBT didn't get any of that coal for some reason even though it's supposed to be high quality.
Maybe somebody that lives up there would be able to determine if the coal being mined now is as high quality as before and inform the foundation? Be nice if there was a modern cleaning plant in Mt. Union!
