    I did a Rapid taster last year, fantastic day out and so much to learn. When the instructors let rip, they show their colours! Smooth, controlled and oh so effective. Real world tuition that totally raises your game. I love the commentary - full of detail and so far ahead in vision.

    I've done quite a few days with these guys and their real world riding training is how I like to ride and why I keep going back to them to refresh and keep my skills sharp. Looking forward to doing my Roadmaster Level3 this year. Always interesting to hear commentary rides and compare them to my own.

    Lovely video. I did my Rospa advanced rider last year in Suffolk. It really reignited riding for me, I've been riding 35+ years and feel more confident than ever - wish I'd done it years ago!

    I did a couple of Rapid days in the Peak District last year. They were very Rapid! Changed my riding for the better and I'm more confident and probably safer. Maybe....

    I did Bikemaster Level 1 in late April last year in Yorkshire - Had to come down from Scotland to do it. I've had my licence for 28 years and been riding most of that time - the 'Rapid Way' has dramatically improved my riding especially on observation skills, road positioning including using the whole road when appropriate - I religously employ what I was tought on a daily basis and have reaped huge benefits. The course is not cheap but I got one to one tuition and coaching for 3 days so in the end IMO value for money - Ps those 3 days were absolutely exhausting, especially how you see Ryan the instructor talking out a typical ride with all the hazrads etc you will be doing this as well constantly LOL

    Fascinating! Ryan’s commentary in particular made me think.
    Very important to not exceed your own limits though, I guess the training is to safely expand them if your confident enough

    Absolutely loved this one Bruce ....For me the whole emphasis on “Riding Your Ride”
    Be that at what ever pace your current skill/confidence level is, to stay within that skill set is paramount.
    The forward planning element here is top notch ! As that’s what brings such a safe ride...
    Anyone watching this thinking hey I could have some of that 🤔 Good training is worth its weight in Gold.....

    I did the Rapid Bikemaster course; by far the best course I have ever done. I got the full value of that course when Ryan gave his commentary and I realised what vision on a bike is all about. Brilliant course, excellent guys. Can’t recommend them highly enough!

      Aye hearing a rider’s commentary really does give you an insight into their vision, information processing, and planning doesn’t it.

    Thanks for this. Looks very interesting and I've heard nothing but good things about Rapid. In fact my local IAM arranged for Rapid days for all observers a couple of years ago. I missed out as I wasn't an observer at that point 😢 Hopefully they'll do it again

    Passed my IAM advanced test and training a few years back and done further training with companies similar to RAPID since, your never too old to learn something new, so much more confident now and I think safer.

    Great video Bruce, I’m booked to do stage 3 Roadmaster with Rapid in June and really looking forward to it. My instructor is Ali who is also a fantastic coach - he has totally transformed my riding. I did RoSPA for the blood bikes but Ali has moved me on massively. I highly recommend Rapid - worth every penny

    Great vid Bruce, I enjoy these type of commentary riding vids as it reinforces what we all should be doing.
    It's very easy to ride and get comfortable and almost switch off.
    I'm always a keen advocate of stretching the comfort zones so you are continuing to improve.
    I've just had my 3rd observed ride and it's been good fun and I've learnt a lot, the last one was a great ride which was very quick but all within the speed limits.
    I can recommend anyone to take up some form of training no matter how good you are as you will always get something out of it.

    Great video as always Bruce - just spent the weekend on an IAM Observer training course that was pretty similar to this, taught by bike cops. Rapid's stuff looks good, but I wouldn't say it's transformed your riding, you're damn good already 😊 Keep 'em coming...

      It did actually, but it was a very small thing which Ryan identified early in the day, which helped me smoothen out my riding and position just that bit earlier - giving better vision, earlier, giving me more time to plan and smoother out the ride.

    I've been our with Ryan a few years ago, and an a tour of the Black Mountains with two other Rapid trainers, and even with Gary and Mark before they handed the company over. They're all brilliant, well woth the money.

    Compton bends ..... On one of my fav local routes.
    Have done "Job" car courses , IAM Skills Bike Skills Day & IAM test all in not too distant past - I theredore watched this with great interest..... I believe I got a decent feel for where the training could potentially be pitched ...dependant on student needs & abilities etc👍

    Wow,,spot on that,,,I suppose in some respects, that kind of commentary and direction should be compulsory,,I’m sure it’d save a lot of accidents and ‘moments’...
    Bumped into Ryan, whilst he was out instructing a few weeks ago, seems a cracking chap, very passionate about passing on his knowledge..

    Know all those roads really well and often take IAM associates on them. I think this video is a great example of what you can get out of a Rapid day, they do have the advantage over IAM/RoSPA of being able to ride in a more "real world" manner. That said the underlying principles are exactly the same between all three organisations.

    Watched user name kate other month doing a IAM and this is so much more up my street REAL riding speeds and keeping it progressing all the time, to me IAM looks stiff and too regimented this is more flow and enjoyable. Think Im lucky to have passed with a X copper in 2002, he showed me and a other lad all this advanced stuff on our 2nd day training, in his words "I'll show you on the first day the tools to pass your test then on the 2nd day I'll show you what you should know" bless you Dave! , then did a job for a guy and he turned out to be a advanced trainer so we went up Annan for 2 days doing all this kind of thing, cant beat good training for the Roads.       I got my IAM qualification 25 years ago, and the training was nothing like the public-facing boring impression that people generally have of them. I worry that the Internet these days adds an extra PR danger to what is, after all, a charity organisation. They cannot afford to be seen as encouraging anything that the uneducated masses might deem outlandish, or to give the press any outrage story to make a profit from.
      What I will say is that IAM and RoSPA are incredibly cheap in comparison, and they teach valuable roadcraft skills. Anyone looking to learn will lose very little by giving them a go.
      All that said, these Rapid guys look like they have a great product. I am very tempted.

    What an insight to advanced riding. Listening to him, I feel I do lot of what he's saying and when talking about leaning the bike under you, I do that more now I've got the AT. No right or wrong but I felt Ryan wasn't a fan. Learnt a lot from this. You always give us something back Bruce. Brilliant 👍

      Hi Lockwood,
      The bike is most stable when it’s upright and under a small amount of drive, so the nearer we can keep it to that position the better. Pushing the bike under will add much more lean angle than needed, will ask much more of the tyres that required.
      At Slow speeds where traction isn’t really tested, pushing the bike under is an advantage, tighter turning circle etc but we need to lean off out the turn quite a bit to counter balance. At anything that could be considered as riding at pace leaning into the bend (not hanging off like a racer) will help keep the bike nearer its most stable position. Allows more traction and getting on the gas much sooner on exit.
      I always try to account for riders style but do see a lot of adventure bike riders with big long bars, using the leverage and more often than not push the bike under.

      Aye I find with the big adventure bikes, particularly the AT and Triumph, they actually handle better at speed when you throw the bike into a corner, rather than lead with your body. The GS has such a low centre of gravity that you can actually lead with your head though.
      I found it really useful to listen to Ryan’s feedback and then watch the footage from his bike so I could see what I was doing👍

      Fortnine did a good video called "You're leaning the wrong way". Explains all the physics which backs up what Ryan is saying here. Not that he needs backing up! Very impressive ride and commentary.

    Fantastic video, always great to see advanced riding at its finest. I have done my IAM and BMF Blue Ribband, but like the way Rapid are more flexible on the ride. I would love to do a day or two with Rapid, but, the cost or the training is more than I can afford right now

      Cheers Rob, aye it is a big chunk of change isn’t it - all I can say is that it’s by far the best road training I’ve had outside of the old bill. Possibly even exceeding the old bill as it’s ‘real world’ 🤷‍♂️
      Worth considering if you find a gold nugget down the back of the sofa 😉👍

      @@teapotone Oh i can see the advantage of it, as sometimes the "system" can be a bit "unforgiving" if you stray out of the parameters of it. I think when you ride to an advanced level you reach a stage where it comes down to opinion rather than fact. Chasing the overtake for example. I think Ryan is a great instructor, but at £440 a day compared to £160 for an ex class 1 rider i know, it is a fair wedge to find. Especially as you may need a couple of days to get the best results. I love all the advanced riding stuff Bruce, it's very informative. Keep it coming.

      Wats,
      A classic saying is “commenting Kill skills”. You know so well can often mean there’s less effort going into riding then well.
      If your having a few near misses then I can’t stress enough that the time for some training/coaching is now. Of course I’ll say with us at Rapid, but if not, get someone (not a mate) to give your ride a once over.

      “get back in the saddle and just ride” will help, but having a coach with you as you do it will accelerate the process. Be open and honest with how it feels and our coach will work with you. Coaching confidence is more difficult, yet as important as coaching Knowledge and skills and we’ve a great coaching team while with you. The guys on the team love riding, but helping others improve their riding if the ultimate reward.

    You asked how your life with out bikes would be,on your pod with Richy.
    Well with all the training and experience you've gained.
    The one factor we all can't take in is "Blind Stupidity"from other road users.
    My life, mental health revolves around bikes.
    All i know,talk about,read about etc
    Last summer,my life as i knew stopped.
    I have no bike,not known if I'll ever get back on a bike,had to surrender my license due to the severity of my injuries.
    All i have now is TH-cam to get me through the days.
    Sometimes can't even watch has its too painful to remind me what i miss and what im missing out on.
    Even hearing bikes.some days its "yeah wind it up"😂
    Other days id quite happily move to a lighthouse.
    So yeah live your life👌
    But we can't protect us from effn morons
    Keep up the stella work mate

    Hi buddy i understand your caution at junctions , but i read a article by a American instructor who believes slowing down when approaching a junction encourages people to pull out because they think you are slowing down to let them out .😮😮😮😮

    You reminded me of my first day on the advanced course, thought I was good after the standard but the advanced just took a higher level. It was when you mentioned the instructor was on the other side of the road I can clearly remember saying the same thing, whats he doing out there! Four weeks later you used he whole road all the time, pay road tax use the road! And as an aside today I was out with my wife in the car and I shouted "Nationals" made her jump then got told off 🤣

    I have to ask and I don't mean it to sound rude, my riding is usually calm and relaxed. I've been watching a few of these as I'm looking at doing this sort of course myself but I'm concerned at the amount of overtaking. it really seems the main focus is passing the vehicle in front. Why the hurry?

      It’s totally dependent on you and your style of riding.
      I like to make progress most of the time in the nationals, so that’s what we did.
      If you don’t, then your instructor will happily tailor your day/course to your style of riding, and they’ll chat with you to identify your strong and weak points, then form a plan to work on them

      Hi Keith,
      Bruce’s answer is on point. The coaches will work with you to achieve your goals. The joys of TH-cam is that I had a good idea of how Bruce rode before the day started and a better idea after our briefing.
      Worth remembering that riders are with their coach for a limited time, so if a rider doesn’t take opportunities that are presented, a coach won’t be able to help with that specific area of riding.

    Tried ROSPA & IAM but being a riding God neither suited me. I am of cause joking about being a riding God even though I have ridden from 16 to 72. No your never too old to learn. Jokes aside I just found the two courses to formulaic . But I did enjoy Bikesafe and going way back MAC course I did when I brought a new Honda. I acquired more skills that I obviously still use. What I liked about them was it was the advice I was given rather than instruction and RAPID seem to do the same. Ryan is clearly good at his job as it seemed that you were riding with a mate rather than an instructor. Its got me thinking of doing the same as you but I know they are not cheap. Great video Bruce and dare I say it ride safe.

      Gary,
      Trail braking on the road is an invaluable tool to have in the tool box however, if your corner entry speed is such that you’re having to brake all the way through to an apex to make the bend, then your not leaving yourself a chance should something not be quite right.
      Know how to do it - rarely should it be the whole plan and nothing but the plan.

    Couldn’t agree more Bruce. I’ve begun my IAM journey towards my advanced rider test and it most certainly makes your riding swifter, safer and more enjoyable. Fantastic commentary, very swift progress😉.
    One question if I may? What would you recommend to an intercom newbee? You seem to be able to communicate with loads of different riders, so I wondered if you use a BT system rather than closed or mesh system?

      Hi Paul,
      I’m a big advocate of Cardo, I’ve used the likes of Sena and Interphone, but Cardo are just on a different level when it comes to all weather use, sound quality, battery life etc etc.
      I use the Edge now which allows you to connect up to 15 riders via mesh, but you can also ‘bridge’ in others who are using non-Cardo mesh devices via Bluetooth - sound quality and signal strength aren’t as good as when connected via mesh, but it’s useable most of the time.

They advised that the likes of Cardo might not work well with Sena but I’m reluctant to buy a 20s evo (the one l’d pick if going the sena route) when it’s not even waterproof!

      Aye sadly Sena and Cardo mesh don’t talk to each other, you’d have to connect via Bluetooth.
      I think it’s ludicrous that the Sena ones aren’t waterproof 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    hi ya......question about training.......rapid looks good, but looks more costly than rospa and iams....i have recently come back to bikes after a long enforced rest, and have hip issues so cant throw my leg over most sports tourers, so i bought a triumph 1200 speedmaster....feet forward and beach bars.... Im great bobbling along but get out of shape on twisties....wrong position, speed, gear, and its stopping me just getting out.......i'm late mid 60s, would a one day rapid course sort me out better than a full rospa or iams course?.....many thanks, and thanks for your vids.......

      Hello bud,
      Be interesting to see what RAPID would say here but I’m not sure if Ryan is still monitoring the comments on these vids anymore - maybe drop them a line via their website for their input.
      Personally I’d say RAPID give the best tailored rider training available right now in civvy st. They’d be able to asses your riding and work on whatever aspects you like, or give you input and advice on what they see in your riding.
      I think it’s important as a rider to have a good grasp of Roadcraft and the core techniques and values it teaches - they will keep you alive. You can get a basic input on this from something like BikeSafe with the police, or do a taster session with your local IAM or RoSPA club. Or alternatively just buy the book, “Motorcycle Roadcraft - The police riders handbook” and study it for yourself.
      IAM/RoSPA is not for everyone - myself included, I’m not a fan of their ‘you must do it like this or you’re wrong’ attitude, and the whole club thing isn’t for me - brilliant that some people enjoy and thrive on that, I’m just saying it’s not for me.
      RAPID gives you one to one bespoke training for as long as you want/pay for.

    Great vid. 12:30 I think even in some of todays cars have some level of AI technology and it may see a bike ahead on its side of the road. It may determine it can’t stop in time and may steer away from a direct hit. Well it may choose to steer towards the kerb or the other way. Just remember drivers of the future will be totally allowing the AI car to be in full control and they may not be taking any care of the road ahead. Just beware this may be happening already.

      To my knowledge, NO car in the UK will take full control away from a driver to that extent - at present, and ALL drivers are required by law to be in full control of their vehicles at all times.
      If this changed in the future, then of course it’s something that would need to be taken into account in future bike handling courses, but not at present.
      As bikers we must always be in control and making decisions that are correct for not only our own safety, but those of other road users. Always.

    Although not mentioned by Ryan, I wonder with hindsight if you agree that you could have held back at the start of the ride at 0:35 to let oncoming cars through rather than cross the broken line?
    As the examiner said later, the acronym for an overtake should be 'SLAP'...
    Is it Safe?
    Is it Legal?
    What will you Achieve?
    How will the manoeuvre be Perceived by other road users?
    Otherwise, an excellent video I thought and interesting to see the degree of braking and more recent thoughts on this.

      I don’t recall if we spoke about it, unlikely that we did as it was straight out the car park from where we met. I tend to give a couple of miles “grace” when riding with someone new as nerves can be high.
      Seems your SLAP is slightly different to mine, yet with the same result.

      @@ryandecarteret1017 That's fair enough Ryan but worth pointing out I thought as the broken lines are much misunderstood by those who haven't looked at the Highway Code in a while! You can cross them if safe and necessary but the intention is to separate lanes of traffic so care is needed.

      I genuinely don’t think it makes any difference at all in a bike when people view you from the front (ie in their rear view mirror - all you see is headlights initially).
      I prefer to utilise road positioning personally, but each to their own 👍

      We come accross some exceptional riders and what makes a good coach isn’t just riding ability, but coaching skills, ability to ride to a high standard whilst being able to put a huge amount of concentration into another rider.
      Bruce rides to a really high standard but most importantly acknowledges there’s always more and is totally open to coaching.

    Wonder if this is recognized as advanced training by insurers and if level 1 is appropriate for some1 who has got his licence 10+ years ago and has only ridden for a couple of months/hundreds of miles.
    If it's easier when you're still developing skills but not late enough that you caught any bad habits.

      That’s a conversation between you and your insurance company. We’ve designed the course with the riding in mind and it’s competency based, rather than a test so some companies don’t like it.
      Level One is perfect for a rider with your experience. The coach will adapt his coaching and edlivery to your needs and skill set.

      If you can’t read the road and see any obstacles in the road at the speed you’re riding, then that suggest you need to slow down on that section of road.
      As we say in the video, reading the road way ahead and utilising your peripheral vision to pick up details in the road ahead of you, is something you need to train and practice. I’m still practicing this on almost every ride to this day.

      In all honestly it’s from being able to look much further up the road than most to give myself loads more TIME to see, interpret what I see and then act (or speak).
      Lots of miles and practice helps too 👍🏼
      Nothing wrong with staying on your side of the road, but be open to exploring more with coaching. Much like overtakes, knowing how, when, where and importantly when/where NOT too is crucial.

    Great video. Sometimes I like to ride fast other times I like to cruise around. Theses skills apply to both in my opinion. I personally enjoy Bruce’s riding style compared to a lot of other bloggers.

      Cheers, I appreciate that, but it’s all down to your own perception I think. I personally don’t stay ‘out’ on the offside as long as Ryan, but there’s no denying he’s in full control and aware of his surroundings constantly. His commentary shows the extent of his observations as well as his decision making and plan.
      As he covers later in the day (and in the next 2 vids from this series), everyone’s riding style is different and everyone’s perception of risk is different too.
      Not to say it’s a free for all obviously, but what one person can perceive as unsafe, another person is totally happy with 🤷‍♂️👍
