Yup. Companies found out that quality products don't keep the company afloat that's why they build to them to fail now. Too many businesses actually FAILED because their products were too good and though their sales were good and had loyal customers, nobody needed to come back for repeat business because nothing needed to be replaced because of the amazing craftsmanship. This caused them to fail in the end. Big businesses today caught on like 30 years ago and started diminishing quality. So sad. I wanted to buy a riding mower from the company who made my push mower and found out they went out of business.... Makes since since I never had to replace it in several years and due to some bad situations it actually was left out side in multiple seasons/ Weather (not by choice mind you) and with a little oil and gas it fired right up with no issues. No surprise, sadly, the people who made this monster went out of business.

The seals broke down in no time and we spent at least 5 years (or longer) with a refrigerator that had mold on the seals due to I don't know what. My husband kept putting off and putting off and putting off buying a new fridge until about 3 years ago. Because of the cost. It is okay but it's probably the same quality as the one we had to get rid of. I'd LOVE that 1956 Frigidaire!!!!

AND ... you didn't need an "Extended Warranty" ... we didn't even know what that was back then. Anything you bought just worked forever. The refrigerator we had when I was 5 years old was still working for my mother as a back up fridge in the basement when I was 30 years old. Today when they encourage you to buy an extended warranty they are frankly admitting that their stuff is junk and it may not even last two years.

The shelves are now all plastic. You can't bring it halfway and pick things. Also, the compartments for butter and the detachable one with vegetables that allows you to snatch the whole thing, that's really neat! It's no longer in existence. And like others have mentioned, you'd be lucky if your fridge runs for 5 years today.
A modern fridge company needs to make a 2020’s version of this. It was so much more practical. I like being able to slide out the compartments and completely take out the fruit compartment
My best friend died of cancer a little over a year ago, and had tons of vintage appliances and everything, his wife let me take one of these home. I only had to buy one ice cube tray, and the refrigerator still works!!! Mine needs a paint job, (sea foam green)and a door gasket,but now it is complete with all of its parts, and I’m amazed how nice it is. To see it in person is really something.
As long as it works reliably, I’m not concerned about how much energy it takes to be honest, small older fridges like this 12 cubic foot fridge don’t take much to run if the compressor is healthy and thermostat works. Thanks

I intend to one day start a company where all the products are made “like they used to”. High quality everything, easily repairable, made to last with no strings attached. I genuinely believe there is a market for such products. Products that don’t insult the customer for choosing a base model instead of a premium one because every. single. product. Will be engineered to the same standard and using the same passion. The products certainly won’t be cheap, but they’ll be made to keep working, and working, and working. Because idk about everyone else, but I’m tired of all these products made by companies who don’t care about the longevity of their products in the long run, who just make products just for the sake of pumping them out and making a sale. I’m tired of stuff breaking all the time due to bad designs. I want to make products that I’d genuinely prefer to use myself. I want to make a brand that respects every customer by delivering a product with a level of quality and attention to detail that immediately lets them know they’ve made the right choice.

Compared to what is available today, this Frigidaire is a Lexus of perfection. What Samsung and LG produce is not anything like this was. Even what Frigidaire produces today is nothing at all like this was. We have lost a lot of quality in appliances.
Many appliances up until the 80's were built by the same companies that made cars. Frigidaire (GM). Kelvinator (AMC), Philco (Ford). Chrysler never made refrigerators, but they did make air conditioners. Even International Harvester made refrigerators back in the day.
I remember all the things we had back then were 10 times the quality and had more functions than we have today. My kitchen stove is a 1954 O'Keefe & Merritt and my refrigerator is a 1960 General Electric. We had a Curtis Mathis console TV with a HiFi stereo. I am so thankful I grew up back then and not today.

Agreed! My stove is from the Catalina company. I paid $10 for it from a lady at church. It is from 1955, and works like a charm. We had our refrigerator worked on one day, and the repair man meandered his way to the stove to tinker with it. He said I should never part with it. :)

Not only was refrigerators better. Stoves were to. I had one that you had an oven that you could set lock and it would cook your meal, turn off when done and keep it warm.. it had a deep pot built in set and leave and it would slow cook and turn off when done. I could put a meal together and go out and come home to a cooked warm meal. It also had a side broiler that lifted up with a built in tray. It was a wonderful stove It did everything and ques what no clutter of appliances setting every where, or needing storage room to put them away! Would i go back to those stoves and refrigerators? OH YEAH IN A HEARTBEAT ❤
My grandmother had one of these it was very cool. Too bad it doesn't show the copper and chrome herringbone on the top part of the door. The handle was cool because you pulled down on the top part or up on the bottom to open. The neat door compartments, but the best was the pull down crisper. It wasn't real big, but you could see and get everything easily, no digging around needed.

Yea! My parentd have a National fridge made in japand got in the 80s that thing still keeps going on and on still chills well. Got a toshiba made in thaliand non inverter one in 2007 that just hit the bucket this year. Took a bosch one now but i doubt it will work as long as the national one will.
We had this precise one in my house from the time I was an infant to the time I was in high school. It never failed but my mom said she was embarrassed to have the old one when her friends had the new side by side with water and ice dispenser and gave it away. The new one started failing in a few years and the shelves and drawers were not as sturdy. If there's something that was better from the 40s and 50s it is how sturdy the appliances and engines were. Same with the old tractors and jeeps, could go for 100 years.

Most people tend to look at the past with rose colored glasses, they will remember the good forget the bad, and bitch about how everything was better back then, I am NOT one of those people, but quality of manufactured products was much better back then, refrigerators, Washing Machines, even cars were generally made to last. give you a few personal experiences, we purchased a house in the mid 90's, that was last remodeled in the 70's, looked like a studio set from that 70's show, green carpet , green refrigerator, plywood paneling, you name it. the fridge we used as a second fridge, purchased a new one. well the new fridge died a few years later, we purchased another, that started rusting out a few years. the original fridge, still working like a charm, no rust. working proudly in all its green glory. same can be said for a few Window air conditioners, one in the garage, other in guest room, I think these are much older, one from the late 60's, noisy, but they work. I remember as a kid people putting refrigerators outside, and washing machines out in the open, they could get rained on. and lasted decades without rusting, today's garbage starts rusting in a few years. I guess there is no profit in making an appliance that will last 40 years.
Only wish there was a way to combine the best aspects of modern fridges with old ones. Have the practicality and durability of the old ones, but with the more energy efficient fridges that we have today.

My grandparents purchsed this model after building their new home in town after leaving the farm. I spent summers with them but my grandmother was a very clean and strict woman and getting in the icebox for any reason without permission was not allowed. We ate 3 meals per day at exact times and only rarely got a treat or snack in between. The point is I remember this icebox but very little. It is the only one they owned in the new home and my grandmother passed in 93 so she enjoyed it 40 years and my grandfather continued to use it until his passing in 2002. It was still humming along then. My father their only child told me he was fearful to move it for fear it would stop running. I know he eventually moved it but unsure where it went. My parents and I live a thousand miles from the farm community where originally from. As a kid I realized my grandparents home was filled with beautiful things but never gave thought to an icebox. My parents had much more modern appliances.
In 1955, General Motors wanted Bess to do for Frigidaire what Betty Furness was successfully doing for Westinghouse.....and for several years, she "pitched" their refrigerators and other appliances.

all the sections in the refrigerator are so perfectly assembled. More spacious than today's refrigerators that costs over 20k also. They just provide you the appearance and with no special features inside.

Many appliances up until the 80's were built by the same companies that made cars. Frigidaire (GM). Kelvinator (AMC), Philco (Ford). Chrysler never made refrigerators, but they did make air conditioners. Even International Harvester made refrigerators back in the day.

I remember all the things we had back then were 10 times the quality and had more functions than we have today. My kitchen stove is a 1954 O'Keefe & Merritt and my refrigerator is a 1960 General Electric. We had a Curtis Mathis console TV with a HiFi stereo. I am so thankful I grew up back then and not today.

I remember my mom & dad replacing their old Frigidaire fridge and stove from about 1953, even though they still worked, for new ones abound 1975, just because they wanted a change.... guess what, I STILL have & use that stove, works like a charm..... I also kept a 1970 TV from my childhood, still works, but I don't use it because nowadays you need a cable box, but, I still use a TV that's from about 1982, still going strong- in the meantime, everyone I know has had to replace SO many TVs and other appliances over & over, and my antiques have outlived them all...also, I keep an antique rotary phone that works great, for the times my new phone or cell phone konks out.... heheh :-D
Agreed! My stove is from the Catalina company. I paid $10 for it from a lady at church. It is from 1955, and works like a charm. We had our refrigerator worked on one day, and the repair man meandered his way to the stove to tinker with it. He said I should never part with it. :)
My parents have a 1950's fridge they bought used in the early 60's, and it's never once been worked on, and is still ice cold today. Man I love the sound of the unlatching mechanism when you open it, and the satisfying thud when it closes.

Not only was refrigerators better. Stoves were to. I had one that you had an oven that you could set lock and it would cook your meal, turn off when done and keep it warm.. it had a deep pot built in set and leave and it would slow cook and turn off when done. I could put a meal together and go out and come home to a cooked warm meal. It also had a side broiler that lifted up with a built in tray. It was a wonderful stove
It did everything and ques what no clutter of appliances setting every where, or needing storage room to put them away! Would i go back to those stoves and refrigerators? OH YEAH IN A HEARTBEAT ❤
My grandmother had one of these it was very cool. Too bad it doesn't show the copper and chrome herringbone on the top part of the door. The handle was cool because you pulled down on the top part or up on the bottom to open. The neat door compartments, but the best was the pull down crisper. It wasn't real big, but you could see and get everything easily, no digging around needed.
My dad worked 32 years, for GM, Frigidaire, in Dayton, Ohio
My Grandmother worked for "The Frigidaire" also. Her old appliances were built like tanks!

Wow. The Golden era of the USA. When we manufactured great products, when everyone could afford to buy a house, when the family unit flourished. The good old days when the American dream was within everyone's reach.
Nowadays, thanks to sensitive motherfuckers, I can't stop thinking about the "atrocious things" that America had done to blacks when I see something beautifully done in the 20th century. Yea, it was terrible. But Asians, Hispanics, etc. Had it too. I get it, we should remember and never forget. But I wanna keep the good vibes, I don't want to focus on the dark side of it. I wanna focus on the bright side. This era of the USA, was indeed golden.

Yea! My parentd have a National fridge made in japand got in the 80s that thing still keeps going on and on still chills well. Got a toshiba made in thaliand non inverter one in 2007 that just hit the bucket this year. Took a bosch one now but i doubt it will work as long as the national one will.

We had this precise one in my house from the time I was an infant to the time I was in high school. It never failed but my mom said she was embarrassed to have the old one when her friends had the new side by side with water and ice dispenser and gave it away. The new one started failing in a few years and the shelves and drawers were not as sturdy. If there's something that was better from the 40s and 50s it is how sturdy the appliances and engines were. Same with the old tractors and jeeps, could go for 100 years.

Most people tend to look at the past with rose colored glasses, they will remember the good forget the bad, and bitch about how everything was better back then, I am NOT one of those people, but quality of manufactured products was much better back then, refrigerators, Washing Machines, even cars were generally made to last. give you a few personal experiences, we purchased a house in the mid 90's, that was last remodeled in the 70's, looked like a studio set from that 70's show, green carpet , green refrigerator, plywood paneling, you name it. the fridge we used as a second fridge, purchased a new one. well the new fridge died a few years later, we purchased another, that started rusting out a few years. the original fridge, still working like a charm, no rust. working proudly in all its green glory. same can be said for a few Window air conditioners, one in the garage, other in guest room, I think these are much older, one from the late 60's, noisy, but they work. I remember as a kid people putting refrigerators outside, and washing machines out in the open, they could get rained on. and lasted decades without rusting, today's garbage starts rusting in a few years. I guess there is no profit in making an appliance that will last 40 years.
Only wish there was a way to combine the best aspects of modern fridges with old ones. Have the practicality and durability of the old ones, but with the more energy efficient fridges that we have today.

They made everything cheap made but more expensive they exploits us even the toys feel like cheap and are made with cheap plastic I have toys from the 90s that feel thicker than the ones now and have less features

My grandparents purchsed this model after building their new home in town after leaving the farm. I spent summers with them but my grandmother was a very clean and strict woman and getting in the icebox for any reason without permission was not allowed. We ate 3 meals per day at exact times and only rarely got a treat or snack in between. The point is I remember this icebox but very little. It is the only one they owned in the new home and my grandmother passed in 93 so she enjoyed it 40 years and my grandfather continued to use it until his passing in 2002. It was still humming along then. My father their only child told me he was fearful to move it for fear it would stop running. I know he eventually moved it but unsure where it went. My parents and I live a thousand miles from the farm community where originally from. As a kid I realized my grandparents home was filled with beautiful things but never gave thought to an icebox. My parents had much more modern appliances.
The meaningless mass exodus from farming communities is one of the silent tragedies of America.
In 1955, General Motors wanted Bess to do for Frigidaire what Betty Furness was successfully doing for Westinghouse.....and for several years, she "pitched" their refrigerators and other appliances.
This fridge is 100% proof that it really is possible that the technology to get to the moon could have been lost.

When my folks bought their house in 1956, in "included" refrigerator and freezer. When my mom passed away, they were _still_ working.
Oh so that’s how those metal ice tray was used. My grandmother ended up passing those down on to my family.

Nowadays we can make awesome TVs and mobile phones and we also have internet that allows us to watch anything or do anything anywhere. Back in the old days, it was a fridge that could last a lifetime.
With all the additions they have nowadays, no one is doing roll-out shelves anymore and it baffles me!

all the sections in the refrigerator are so perfectly assembled. More spacious than today's refrigerators that costs over 20k also. They just provide you the appearance and with no special features inside.
