    What are your thoughts on the ASRock Z790 PG-ITX/TB4 as another possible ITX board for creators?

  • @mabundax
    @mabundax ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I loved the Asus gaming family of ITX boards from the second they arrived. I have the Maximus VII ITX, the Strix Z390-i Gaming and now the Strix Z790-i. I don-t like that they moved the soundboard in the hive and from there you have to connect all the audio devices. I like the idea of connecting the headset in the hive but the main audio system i prefer to connect it in the back of the mainboard. The other thing that botheres me is that it seemes to me that the board is made in a hurry...there are some compatibility issues/ some things to be corrected in bios. My system freezes from time to time and becomes unresponsive till i hold the power button and turn off. For the price that is now....it should be better.

      it is about time ITX got a second PCIe slot, then we could add whatever we wanted via ribbon cable with PCIe slot on the end, & have it run off the other device than the main PCIe, so it doesn't share lanes. (Chipset & CPU)
      But M.2 to PCIe adapters work too, but would be best if 'spare' M.2 was on the back of the m/b so not to have a cable ribbon running across your build.

    Answer to Your question is heat mate, if You've had Aquantia 10 gbe chip on that little board, it would require another doohickey thingie there to cool it, not enough space, so that's the answer. The infamous Intel I225-V which most likely occupies this motherboard [I have it too, just still in box] is also running hot [its controller], but it can be side cooled by VRM heatsink. And that's that.

The ASUS board looks better, but both boards got me to 8000mhz DDR5 and performance and cooling are within margin of error. With the ASUS, you are paying more for the external desktop controller. I build in ITX for the form factor and minimalism and don't use the large controller. I prefer the 3 m.2 (1 G3, 2 G4) slots that the MSI offers. I hate SATA SSD's and 3 m.2 is perfect.

    For building a system for content creator usage, plus other usage, I would never even consider an ITX motherboard. It is way too limited. And until recently I would have agreed with you that a built-in 10GbE port is a necessity to connect to a high-speed NAS, but I've now seen the light and will by completely bypassing that level, going directly to 40GbE. But no motherboards have 40GbE built-in, that I'm aware of. And ITX motherboards have only one PCIe expansion slot. So there is just no way an ITX motherboard will ever work for me. mATX, perhaps, but much better to go with a full ATX or even eATX motherboard. Then I can install my 40GbE NIC, GPU, BlackMagic 4K Monitor card, and whatever other card(s) I need, in an easy to work with form factor that's not cramped. Then connect to a DIY NAS that I'll customize to my exact needs, including the necessary 40GbE NIC, using free TrueNAS/FreeNAS. Both the NAS and workstation PC will be full tower cases. The NAS a full tower to hold plenty of drives, and the workstation PC just because they'll be side-by-side and no advantage to having a smaller case. Then both cases will be tucked away under my desk, but on trollies where they can be easily wheeled out if I need to work on them.
