The comment about husbands not noticing the difference made me laugh!! So true! My grandfather was picky about food brands so my grandmother would put store brand coffee and peanut butter into an empty name brand jar 😂 he never noticed

My grandparents ate cereal for supper. We've been eating oatmeal with a tsp of nutbutter for dinner & we've been sleeping great with that easy to digest meal! Dishes are amazingly easy and it keeps us full to breakfast.

A couple of yrs ago I got laid off and had to take a job of lesser pay. I have 2 teenage boys - both over 5'8 - during that time I shopped at Aldi's for no more than $30 a week ( to include most household items ) - it can be done. Ive since got that job back but still trying to spend below my income to feel more in control and pay off debt ( recently paid off over $200 in credit card debt).

Groceries cost nothing in Australia if you are poor. You just go to those places which hand out food parcels for the homeless. $0 per month! I'm quite sure there is a similar system in America.

The best "diet" tip I ever found was smaller vessels. I switched from 10inch "dinner" plates to 8inch "salad" plates. I also changed from "cereal" bowls to the pyrex "suffle" bowls. It also makes other people unaware that they are eating less food

I think one of the best ways to know what a cereal bowl is or any other dish is to go in a vintage store and look at the dishes. What our great-grandparents used for cereal is now considered a dessert bowl. What they called a dessert bowl is half that size again. Even glassware. Look at their wine glasses compared to ours. All of their glassware was smaller. When I realized that truth is when I stopped over filling my plate. We now use the smaller plates rather than the "normal" sized dinner plates of today.

Growing up my Mom always had the same 7 meal rotation so we knew what we were having on each day. It was simple for her, each kid knew the day they had to do dishes and we loved every meal. On Sunday she would either have a rump roast or a pork roast depending what was on sale. I do a two week rotation so my family are eating 2 of the same meals each month. And to be honest they don't seem to remember. And like my Mother, Sunday is my adventure day where I try new recipes to add to the rotation. I recently purchased your book so plan on incorporating them into my menu rotation and hopefully I'll be able to do a 4 week rotation. And advantage of having the same meals --- if someone goes on sale --- you know 'OH i'm fixing that next week' so you pick it up when the item is on sale. Great show -- and I'm glad this is a new series. :)

I've struggled with my weight as an older person. I always ate large servings and was slender until I hit my 40's. I had a very slender friend in her 50's. She never gained weight. She told me my portions were too big. I always ate healthy and I dislike fast food and sodas. So my diet was good but what is spoken of on here is very true. After talking to my friend, I had an idea to just cut my food in half throughout the day. I ate one egg instead of two, half a sandwich for lunch but I ate the other half before leaving work and maybe and apple. For dinner I had one helping of food and no snacks at night except a piece of fruit. At first I was hungry but in time I got used to it and I did allow two snacks a day which were portioned out to a serving size. I lost 25 pounds in no time. I called it my rationing diet. It felt like I was eating rationed food but it was really just normal amounts. And I ate very good food. If I went to dinner I would eat the leftovers for two or three days. I enjoyed my Chicken Marsala over and over not just in one sitting. It works!

My parents grew up after the war in England, with rationing going on believe me no one was overweight, we have become gluttons with all the food that is available today. My Aunt tells me stories about how they had to get together to bake my mums wedding cake, everyone gave their ration coupon to buy the ingredients.

When I was growing up, we had the same four or five meals every week. For instance, Wednesday was spaghetti night. Our spaghetti was a package of pasta and a can on tomatoes poured over it. I still love it that way. Other nights might be hamburger patties, hot dogs, bologna sandwiches, etc. The only vegetables we had were canned peas or canned corn. Never HEARD of squash or asparagus, etc.

My Dr told my husband and me to place 3/4 of veggies (and a little fruit) on our plates. Eat chicken, but not fried, and fish, also not fried. Rarely eat pasta and only eat red meat 1x a week. Drink plenty of water. He also said the same thing about dinner plates. They have become too big. We each need to lose 20 lbs. We saw him 10 days ago. I've lost 1.6 lbs and husband has list 2.8 lbs. I would love seeing videos on baked and broiled fish. I think many people would. I watch at least 1 of your videos every day!!! Looking forward to receiving my book!!!

Meal extenders are key for me. These are potatoes, rice, noodles and water. You can have a pot of stew that will feed 4, but if you add half the amount again with water, you have a chunky soup that will feed 6, and served with cornbread or crackers on the side, it is filling. Use potatoes every day to extend meals. They work for any meal, and I have found a 10 lb bag for $1.89 on sale. Many times it's a bit more, but the food value is exceptional, even if you live alone, which I do. Cooked ahead and kept in the fridge, they are ready for potato salad, home fries for breakfast, or blended into a creamy soup with chives. Rice mixes with almost everything, too. Seasonings are key for food, regardless of what you eat. Invest in some dried herbs/spices and don't be afraid to use them. You instantly become a gourmet cook!

And Chile!!! I am also on a fixed budget. I live with my daughter, who just separated, we eat well, but very simple. We eat the fruits and vegetables in season, we buy the fish, chicken and meat on sale. We love vegetables, so, for example I make a vegetable type flan, we get six good portions, and we eat two and freeze the rest by portions in plastic bags. I make bread with my bread machine, ai don’t make menus either, it depends what is on sale. I make fritatas with whatever is left over, I even make them out of raw carrots, lettuce, raw spinach, it is also delicious. Making good food for less money is easy if you are intelligent and think before you buy. Love your show thank you!!! All my love to the both of you, you are so sweet to one another❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏🌷

Serving sizes has went way up since the 50s. It's not just at fast food it's inside people's homes too. I've lost a lot of weight and kept it off for over 5 years by cutting portion size. I have more work to do but I slowly cut portion size and now easily eat less than half what I used to in a day.

I had been spending SO much money on meat for almost 20 yrs, until....Tawra saved my grocery budget for me! On one of y’alls videos I commented that my husband could eat a pound of meat himself and y’all were telling me to use just a half pound to feed 4 people. I thought it was impossible and y’all were outta your minds. Then Tawra told me, in a reply, to only place half the meat on the table! And suddenly a light went on! I realized at that moment, exactly how easy this would be! Why wasn’t I already doing that?? Y’all have helped me cut my grocery bill in HALF! Yes, in HALF! And it really has been due to serving size and watching for bargains! Thank y’all SO SO much! I love y’all!
Thanks for everything y’all do for us! Have a very blessed day. 💕🙏

Reducing your plate size can help with portion control. Using massive plates then putting a normal portion on it make it look like very little food. Using a plate between a normal plate and a sandwich plate looks very full.

I totally agree. I've been using a "toddler's plate" that is divided into three sections for years on which to serve food. I also use a toddler's or juice size cup for beverages unless I'm drinking water. Mentally and visually, you think you're getting a bigger serving. Diane in North Carolina

I have learned a lot from you ladies and want to thank you again. I have also gotten some jumbo sweet potatoes that fed us for multiple meals. I have weaned us back to not eating organic foods, per your suggestion, since last summer to penny pinch and we still feel healthy. We, mostly I, struggle to eat proper serving sizes (I'm currently breastfeeding and MORE hungry than when I was pregnant, but I have always had this issue). I bet if I changed my ways we would save money! It truly is a mindset issue.

I have longevity in my family, with the elders living well past 90. A boiled egg and a tomato is dinner for those folks. A toast in the morning, and 1/4 cup milk is breakfast. 1 corn on the cob is side for 2 people. No obesity,no debt. And all of them ate McDonalds occasionally, ate at restaurants, smoked cigarettes, lived in big cities and nobody cares about organic or non gmo. We eat too much.Period.

Jill im with you..i dont mind making it simple and eating the same thing. Like to make a crockpot of stew etc. And will eat it for 2/3 meals a day until gone and if it thickens up then just add water or 2mato juice etc. to it...sometimes add rice or noodles etc. I cooked up a turkey last month and divided it into portions and froze and still have some in the freezer still plus cooked a bag of chicken leg quarters and just finished the chicken pulled off the bones last night for dinner. So it does last if you make them portion sized and saves $.Also Tawras tip about when people move..the stuff you can get...A friend is building a home and has just given me a box of mostly food stuff..spices ..a lot of lg. Bottles some home grown and dried mostly cause she had stockpiled them and said her smaller home she wont have room and if i didnt take would be donated so i saved a lot of $ not buying them for a while.

I read it from cover to cover & penciled in some comments or modifications from some of my recipes. By the way love the photos, stories and the Elephant Soup! A fun reading book & love the money saving ideas. Thank you both.

We so easily delude ourselves into thinking that this diet or that diet will magically whisk away our excess pounds. I've had to preach this "portion size" message to MYSELF over and over. There is no magic weight loss solution! If there is a formula it is "Eat less, Move more!" Also, you can half lots of things you buy. When my liquid dishwashing bottle, shampoo, conditioner, detergent, etc. gets 1/2 full, I fill it back up with water! It still works great! I even cut fabric softener sheets in half. Half strength works on everything, even cutting your hamburger in half for spaghetti or lasagna just like you said. Good tips! Oh, and use just a dab of toothpaste it works great! We are an excessive nation. TFS

I agree with Jill and Tawra. I have been on Weight Watchers since 2009. I stick with the same plan and do portion control to keep my weight down. I buy plates, mugs, cutlery, and bowls from the thrift store. I get older ones that are smaller than what is sold now. I use salad forks and teaspoons to eat with. I usually use salad plates instead of bigger dinner plates. I save a lot on groceries using the "Dining on a Dime Cookbook" and use a lot of the tips on "Living on a Dime's" website. I look forward to hearing more.

My son took your sheila ham and noodle recipe from the cook book and changed it up 3 dif ways. And it's all awesome. He wanted me to include this comment here. So if people need variety? His idea is take a recipe. And tweak it to change it up a bit. I have gotten smaller dishes. And this is a great idea. Bc. It stretches the food bill more and we have leftovers. Or we take some of those dishes add something to it. Like a can of cream soup. Add bread crumbs or potato tots and voila. New meal

This is why I love you guys. Common sense, Godly wisdom, and conviction all rolled up in one. You know me personally, and know I am overweight. The truth is hard to hear sometimes, but no less truthful just because it hurts. I don't know if I've ever...EVER..!! eaten only 1/4 cup of meat for a meal. Not saying it won't be a struggle, but putting it in such black and white terms...THIS is how much you should eat!....it's stunning-truly. As always, I love your hints and your no nonsense, no excuse approach!

Depending on the cut of boneless meat ,it can actually be a better bargain than bone in skin on .
Take away the bones and skin and it is more per pound of meat.

On a regular basis, I make chili with ground meat or ground turkey, northern beans and kidney beans. I also use several zucchinis (4/8) and grind them in the food processor. Large cans of diced tomatoes, onion, garlic and spices. I use more beans than the recipe call for, as the chili cook together you think you are eating lots of meat. Sometimes, I double my recipe. Cook in the slow cooker, it is always delicious. A great meal for men, and anyone hungry for a yummy and inexpensive dinner.

If people got over the idea they have to eat until they are full and eat sensible size servings, and stop thinking if is cheap it cant be good. When we do go out we eat some and always bring home enough for another meal or sometimes 2. No organic or fad foods here and at 79 and 81 we will put our health numbers up against someone 40 years younger!

Steak is so high these days. So now I get ground sirloin. And no more than 3/4lb. It's plenty. And I love chicken. And I do well with a package of ground chicken too. So now bc I am trying incorporate more vegis in our diet with less meat. And so far by getting ground meats has been working well for us. Just an idea.

I agree with serving size. I don't know if the same in the USA as in the UK but dinner plates have got bigger so people tend to to 'fill' the plate. Because when you put the correct size portion it's lost the plate.

The struggle is learning portion control after eating sooo much more for sooo long. We have to learn how to fill up healthily & drink that water! It's not easy, but It can be done. We eat more salad than ever before & eat what is in season or on sale. Teaching selves to eat less...good concept. Hope you elaborate on how to change your mind to eat less

  • @jimmiepatrum

So Tawra spends $66.66 per month (6 x $66.66 = $400) on each person in her family, but Jill spends $80 per month just for herself. Are Tawra's savings bigger because of stockpiling? I'm not criticizing...just sincerely asking. I've been widowed since Aug. 2018 and I do eat out more than I used to, but I always divide the meal into at least two or three servings, which cuts the cost down considerably. Still higher than cooking at home, but doable for me and my budget. Diane in North Carolina

@@nancybarnett2832 Thanks, Nancy. That might explain it. There's not a huge difference $ wise, but percentage wise, it's over 8% per month. Dollars and cents do add up, as we all know.

    • @LivingOnADime
      @LivingOnADime  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's because family sizes of meats are easier to stockpile. Also the 2 older kids eat out about 3 or so meals a week each.

Ruth ex I can drive 40 miles to a bigger city and get groceries way cheaper, a lot of people in our town do that. I might think about doing that next time. Save my list for a month and than do the 80 miles round trip.
