I thought A95L contrast looks better in many scenes. B9 is definitely brighter. Although the B9 black level is astonishing for a mini led, QD-oled is still unbeatable. On the A95L, the details in the night sky at 6:40 looks better than the B9. The stars are more striking.

OLED specializes in small bright highlights (think stars, or a glowing orb down a dark hallway) and mixed (a shadowy forest with bright sun still coming through) but Mini LED specializes in full screen brightness (arguably the majority of content, besides edgy shows and some games) while both you and the TV also don't have to jump through the multiple hoops to mitigate burn-in. still though, dat OLED contrast (and better minor area brightness)

If entirely true, then this is such an example of too dark as the case here where the A95L dark details get lost. 13:13

I have seen side by side the B9 A95L and Bravia 8. It comes down to taste. Bravia 9 can't match the contrast of an OLED or QD OLED. Is brighter though. The Bravia 8 is the one that I'm very impressed. I think is the underdog TV of 2024. No one is talking about it or at least as much as the B9 and G4. Very impressed with the Bravia 8 personally. Also the Bravia 9 at 85 inches needs to be 8K. You're loosing some of the resolution. Great video Brian! Enjoy your vacation!

I received my 85 inch bravia 9 on Monday and I have to say that I love the picture quality.
I can't compare it with an a95L (because I have not seen that one), but I upgraded from LG Oled. (Not MLA)
I am really happy with the shadow details and also with the specular highlights. You can see an eye blinding sun in the left corner and see shadow dark detail on the right.

I sit in front of this tv on around 3m so I don't really have off angle views when I am watching something. Only when I walk away. And it doesn't really bother me, because it is so minimal. When I have a bit of light in the room, I cant see it anymore and there are black scènes with a white moon where I see nothing.

Very bright but G4 and A95L are so bright that I rather have superior contrast and color detail over just bright TV in my opinion. Especially for gaming I need that instant pixel response time and no ghosting. Ghosting, smearing and the slow response time just kills it for me. Not Sony’s fault since that LCD’s limit. What I saw for the Bravia 9 in the video several times was a bright object like a tulip which was bright and focused in the foreground, plus another object like a dimmer unfocused tulip in the background separated with black in between. That dimmer unfocused object either was barely visible or not visible at all in the A95L. That is evidence that the lack of luminance or chrominance at lower light levels in the OLED. I don’t feel these OLEDs can represent these dark video choices including shadow detail as well as the Bravia 9. The A95 has better blues, reds, and yellows; an overall warmer color. Sadly the Bravia 9 looks good by itself, but PALER next to the A95. I'll take the better color over the whiter white any day. I have noticed one additional thing. The dark areas on the A95l are too dark, while the Bravia 9 shows some details in the shadows. I imagine that would be a benefit to gamers who want to see every little thing regardless. From what I've read, Sony is looking to move away from OLED to mini and micro LEDs, but micro LED won't be here for a few years yet. Some on the AVS forum say don't buy the OLED tvs without a 5 year warranty. It's almost expected they will need a new panel by then.

As a sports fan though and hockey in particular I think I may go with the 75” B9 for its purer whites. The only thing holding me back is that it will be in a basement. Tough decision!

Last year, the 85-inch and 75-inch versions of the X95L model had different display panels, with the 85-inch version having a better panel. Therefore, if you bought the 65-inch or 75-inch X95L, you got a lower-quality panel compared to the 85-inch. How are things this year with the Bravia 9 (XR90)? Does the display quality vary depending on the screen size? Are there any differences in sound or other features based on the screen size?

These tvs are really close in many ways. From the video it's apparent that the black levels look better on the A95L but I would have loved to see these sets in different modes and calibrated for the tests. I think you could probably get the 9 to look very close in blacks to the OLED. It would have been fun to see what you could have pushed out of the 9 but really either tv is great. I just purchased the 7 which is very similar to the 9 in PQ although the ( has better specs. I think the antiglare on the 9 and filter for angles actually degrades the PQ slightly. Thanks for the matchup.

The A95L is obviously amazing. But the Bravia 9 feels more natural and true to life in images. Yes the A95L has contrast. But that contrast like any OLED seems manufactured and not true to life.
It's like taking a normal picture and then running it through Photoshop and press "enhance" on it.
I have the 85" Bravia 9. What a TV. For a miniLED it's a revelation. The A95L does obviously have better color. Because it's QDOLED. But that doesn't mean the Bravia 9 doesn't have it, it does.
The brightness in HDR is awesome. Gaming is awesome too. Playing Horizon forbidden West. Looks so good.

The B9 seems closer to reality for me - and the white point on the A95L being skewed to purple / blue was really distracting.... I was in a local shop to see these side by side last week and was surprised by the B9 quality. When I mentioned it to the salesman he said "That is actually the B7...." I guess what I learned was that they are all pretty amazing when you see them in person and not just in a TH-cam video!

However, the difference is only a small difference and in person with demo mode on the brightness of the Bravia 9 along with the color reproduction and sharpness looks amazing! It stood out from the other Sony TV's on the wall but it was the largest and in the middle also. The set up I saw had the X90L top left Bravia 7 bottom left Brvia 9 center and on the right to A80L and bottom right A95L. From this video, and watching through far from an accurate display, I thought the Bravia 9 was better. Punchy picture, the whites look white, which, makes the pictures look more real, like you're really there. Yes, there were some instances where you could notice a little bloom, sometimes the images were a little washed out, but, very minor differences that could only be seen with both TVs together. The OLED's blue tint was very noticeable (again when the other TV is right there telling you that picture shouldn't look like that). I doubt you would also notice the lack of brightness if the other TV wasn't right next to it. Still, these need to be seen in person, especially because the response time on the OLED is just much better. This begs the question, how do fast moving objects look? Also, how punchy are the colours in person? That would probably sway the decision in the end.
However, I think with both TVs separated, the OLED would be able to hide its disadvantages better. So maybe that makes it a better choice.

I’m an Oled fan for past 10 years - since first 1080p LG Oled till today - would not touch LED. But one thing this comparison made me aware of, thanks to Brian for putting it together, APL makes a depth perception difference. We all say oled has depth thanks to better contrast - but the same applies with higher picture brightness - and I’m not talking about 1500 vs 2900 difference but much higher average picture level. In many scenes you can see B9 universally brighter that translates into better depth, better 3D effect. Yes oled does it better when small dark areas are present, but likewise B9 does better when APL is higher what oled can do and those black areas are not present. Trading blows literally. Now awaiting 77” vs 85” comparison which will be very very interesting.
I’m aware from that distance we can’t really see aforementioned OLEDs depth hence picture looks more similar than it probably is - as well as b9 brightness clipping in few scenes - taking away depth as well. In person viewing is a must.
TLDR: I think B9 higher APL is much more important feature than its high peak brightness

The Bravia 9 has slightly better contrast and saturation. If the saturation can be increased slightly, the difference is negligible, with only contrast being the marginal difference. The detail the A95L appears to provide isn't, at least based on this TH-cam video, true detail at all. It is slightly better contrast and sharpening which give the impression of detail. In short, you are getting roughly 98% of what the A95L offers with the Bravia 9, at a much lower price.

As long as there are questions concerning off angle viewing, blooming, and lower contrast ratio and they are evident on a display, OLED will continue to be the better format for me. Brighter in specular highlights, while good, is only a plus in less minimal situations. You have to hunt for those, they aren’t the norm. Eventually LED/LCD may equal OLED in all aspects, but not yet. Close but ……

The Bravia 9 is amazing this year...it looks nearly as good as the QD Oled, and in some respects, it looks better due to the increased shadow detail. Simply amazing.

I’m an OLED convert ever since my A80J. It’ll be amazing to see how the 9s tech trickles down in future

Good video. Had Sony only made the Bravia 9 in mini led at 100 inches. I went with 100” Hisense U8K!

Nice comparison. The A95L seems to have a pinkish cast to it, but it showed stars much better than the Bravia 9.
