  • Watch all 3 summits on the Three Sisters Trilogy:
    • The Three Sisters Trilogy
    In this video I show the process of summiting the North Sister. This is by far the hardest of the Three Sisters. The entire mountain is made of loose rock. We used ropes for 3 different obstacles. The trip started at Pole Creek Trailhead. This was a goal of mine for awhile and I am so glad it has been done. Please be careful attempting this as there is a death or rescue here every year. Best practice is to go with someone who has already gone for your first time. We were lucky with conditions, but it isn't always like this. Hopefully the info in this video is helpful. Feel free to ask any questions.
    Here is the uncut footage from this video:

      You are jinxed alright. I'm following not tracking. Beautiful video and excellent narrative as always. Scarry climb and beautiful too. Thanks. I've been lagging behind, just trying to catch up in no particular order. Your videos are a joy. Thanks! How about southeastern Oregon where the mountain goats still thrive. I think you might have some fun with the challenge. You may have already done that, I'm still catching up... Hey, Wait Up!... Wait for me!

Now, at 71, I almost couldn't watch the video. After all this time my hands are all sweaty and I'm practically shaking. That's what age will do. @Hangs4Fun 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Figure I could break up my comments a bit for you, since YT just counts the numbers (content of comments, not so much) :-)
      Any way, any plans on doing the North sister when she's snowed over, or is it too sketchy through that nasty traverse when its snowed over? It might be a little easier, since it looks like loose rocks are the biggest threat there. And as long as the avalanche threat is low, might be a different experience

    Wow, what an epic summit hike! Loved the intro with the underwater shot, tense music and 3d graphic. It must have been exciting to set out before dawn. Those rocks were so cool looking. Do the falling rocks just happen or is it caused by wind or other hikers? The technical rigging aspects of the climb were interesting. Congratulations on a successful summit! I'm impressed by the skill and safety of you and your team. Loved the video.

      Thanks man. This has been my proudest moment as a climber. Always been a very scary mountain to me. A little bit of both with the falling rocks, what I was seeing was caused by other climbers. Now the dream is to summit all 3 sisters in one day!

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! I try and stay away from climb education cause that online community will rip you apart hahaha. For traverse the last climber was at the end of rope while others pulled the slack. For rappel the last climber did a double rope rappel so you could untie and pull the rope through after.

    I wonder what minerals those are that make the rocks purple , yellow and orange. I have never seen lava like that before ?

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish I knew. Lava rocks can fade color over time. The time it takes to cool lava to rock affects the color. Maybe some of the rock was during cold time and some during warmer time.

    What time of year was this done? Might consider doing it in Late June/early July, hopefully there is just enough snow to keep some of the loose scree in place

      August. June with some snow could be safer to those with snow experience. We really lucked out with the traverse how it was.

    What is the hardest mtn in Oregon that does NOT require ropework? I need to check out that class at Smith Rock for those skills first.

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a very debatable question. Thielsen and broken top are the worst things I would do without ropes. But many rope up for them. Below those, maybe middle sister? Obsidians climb school is very good, I went through it and highly recommend.

    • @MattCookOregon

      Thanks for the question. I have seen people go up it with nothing but a tiny backpack. I would not recommend it. We have so many other mountains that can be hiked up. I say do all of those first and slowly acquire the gear. It is worth it. I love chatting about mountains so let me know if you have more thoughts.

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. North and South are very different. North is one of the most dangerous mountains we have. As you can see much more cliff exposure. McLoughlin and Diamond Peak are very similar to South Sister. Broken Top and Thielsen both have vertical walls to climb at the end. I have free climbed those two, but roping up is always best.
