Middle Sister Summit , Oregon

  • Watch all 3 summits on the Three Sisters Trilogy:
    • The Three Sisters Trilogy
    In this video I go to the summit of the Middle Sister. This is a dangerous task. Do not try this without mountain experience. I have been doing this for a long time. Before heading to the Middle Sister I suggest doing some easier ones such as South Sister and Diamond Peak. There is a lot of good wilderness camping in this area. The route this video takes is called East Pole Creek Trail. The trail goes to the base of the mountain and then circles around Hayden Glacier and Prouty Point. The final climb was very difficult. There were loose rocks and it was very steep. What mountain would you like to see next?
    The week before I went to the summit of Broken Top:

      Thank you! The biggest missed opportunity in the three sisters trilogy is that I had a sandwich scene in south/middle, but only a second glimpse at North. North is all business.

    What a sweet location for a good hike up a mountain! Thanks for taking us along Matt. Can't say I've ever seen butterflies in that vast quantity before haha. Pretty crazy and cool. Hope all has been well - Shane

      Thanks Shane. I am not sure what the deal with the butterflies was! Tried a little research and couldn't find much other than articles saying the orange winged butterflies came from California due to climate change.

    i climbed this mountain in the 1980's . we made base camp at the meadows before obsidian falls and spent the night there .. we climbed up hayen glacier and decended renfrew glacier .. the loose rock was frustrating .. two steps forward and three steps back it seemed some times ..from the saddle you could look down into the crevases on the east side . i was surprised to see the forest fire damage in this video ..so sad we did use ice axes both in the acent and the decent we basically glacaded down renfrew on the decent .. that was great fun .. the view from the top was insurmountable. .. there was a book at the top to sign .. that surprised me also .. we made it up to the top and back to camp easily in one day ... i will never forget the joy of this whole tripl

    Excellent videography. Here in NH most of our summits are solid granite but we top out at just over 6,000 feet with Mount Washington . That loose rock looks tricky. Those butterflies were kinda crazy. Thanks for sharing

      @MattCookOregon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! We have a mt Washington too. Slightly taller than yours. Yeah this one sure is dangerous with the steep loose rock at the end. I grew up doing the mountains in this area so it is all very second nature to me.

      Matt.Cook.Oregon Here in NH we have the Presidential Range with Mount Washington (6,288’) being the highest in the Northeast US, we also have Mt Adams (5,299’), Mt Jefferson (5,716’), Mt Monroe (5,372’), and Mt Madison (5,366’) rounding out our Top 5. Funny I think you listed off several Mountains with the same names out your way. Rock on !

    I was up at camp lake back in like 2006, or whenever that big fire came through there... And some poor guy was trying to fix his MSR miniworks water filter right next to the shore.... Well... the spring and back ball inside his filter fell into about 10 inches of crystal clear water... The spring was easy to reach in and recover... But... the little black ball had about the same density as the pumice stones of equal size and color in the lake... when he reached in to grab in, any act of disturbing the water moved the stones and plastic ball before he could grab it... meh, he managed to loose it in the pumice stones in 2 minutes trying to get it at it... I loaned him my filter, but he visibly bummed... he had planned a long trip around all the mountains and being 103-105 degrees, he knew he was screwed. Looking back in retrospect, he could have only retrieved it using a straw...

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats cool! I always have a life straw as a backup. Or I guess you could use a stove to purify too. We hung at camp lake on this trip but I was too worried about video length and cut it.

    Hi Matt!
    I truly appreciate your videos! I had no idea what kind of a hike the North Sister was going to be until I saw your video. I just decided to climb it on a whim.
    I climbed NS last weekend, didn’t get the summit, just hit the ridge and that was good enough for me. It’s my first of the 3 Sisters to climb. I can see that the Middle Sister also has that volcanic scree and I’m wondering in comparison to the NS, how much is there?

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! North is by far the hardest, only one where you actually have to climb. The middle sister has the most steep exposed scree at the top of the three. South sister is easiest and I would definitely do that one first.

    • @joycesjourneys6026
      @joycesjourneys6026 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t get the required permit to climb those 2, thus the whimsical idea that I’ll just climb North first. I need more experience on that volcanic rock scree, that stuff is no joke! I’m used to a smoother shale scree. Thank you for all the content, it really helps!!

      Thanks for stopping by Hike Oregon. This is only 3 years old but somehow it is embarrassingly bad. I guess we move on fast with video making. Last time I did obsidian was 20 years ago. I really like all the camping on the east side. Similar mileage and terrain for both trails. They both meet up at Prouty point, so they have the same dangerous final scramble. West side has a bit more snow and less obvious route so small advantage for east side.
