How I almost bought a vintage Neumann U87
มุมมอง 1432 หลายเดือนก่อน
I almost bought a vintage Neumann U87, but instead ended up learning a thing or two about buying vintage microphones. The vintage Neumann U87i microphone is legendary and is known for being a great all around microphone and particularly good for vocals in a busy mix. This microphone changed recording forever and was in fact the first sold state condenser microphone ever made. The Neumann U87 ha...
Stam Audio SA-87i vs Neumann U87 Ai. Can you hear the difference?

Comparison of the Stam Audio SA-87i and the Neumann U87 Ai on guitar, vocals and drum overheads. Many say Stam makes the best U87 clone, I have not tested any other ones, but this one is very good. Signal chain: SA87i and Neumann U87 Ai plugged into a Neve 1073 preamp. I sing a caption out of “Before the Woman”, written by Fredrik Löf and Ronnie Rahka. You can find the full song on Spotify or T...

Thinking of learning how to sing online? Want to learn to sing rock with distortion? It takes years to learn, forget about learning in 15 minutes or learning in 30 days. There are alot of vocal coaches out there, and it seems anyone can call them selves a vocal coach. Worst case, you hurt yourself, waiste your time and money and don’t actually learn anything useful. Shooting Star cover on Stam Audio SA87i

I recently got the Stam Audio SA-87i. Here is a first demo. Sorry, I don’t know the lyrics by heart. I plan to post a comparison to Neumann U87 ai in the near future. If I remember correctly the acoustic guitars are recorded using the U87 ai. The Stam SA87i has a lower output and more highs than the U87 ai, but they sound very similar in most applications, although with good gear and sharp ears...

    There is a difference. The Stan is modeled after a vintage (1979) U87. The Neumann U87ai is a bit more hyped in the high end. The Stam, like the vintage Neumann, isn’t as harsh in the high end. If anything, the U87ai sounds a little scooped. Your EQ attempt went in the wrong direction. You pulled down the high end, boosting it would get you closer to the U87ai. Personally, I actually don’t really care for that ai sound. The vintage U87 just sounds better. It’s a more versatile microphone. Not that the U87ai is a “bad” microphone. It’s a very common microphone in studios. Some sources will sound better on it. But for me that hyped high end makes sibilants and clicky mouth noise more of a problem. Again, it’s a personal preference thing. I’m very familiar with Neumann’s U87 and the U87ai as well as the Stam 87i. The Stam is almost identical to the U87 but sounds nothing like the U87ai.

      The Stam is significantly brighter than the U87Ai, which has a more pronounced high mid. The U87Ai is not hyped in the high end iin my opinion

    Maybe the Stam sounds better in acapella mode. But I don't think it cuts through better in a mix than the original U87 Ai. Because the mids of the U87 are much more pronounced than those of the Sa-87. I think the Neumann's mids have something slightly 3-dimensional about them, the mids pop out, even in busy mixes. I don't know if Stam can do that too. However, I know that the mids are the most important for a voice.

      I agree, I really like the U87 Ai. But I like both and have found that which one works best depends on the song and the brightness of the other instruments. U87 takes EQ very well so can easily be made a bit brighter if you want to.

    I own a Vintage U87 (I have videos with it on my channel) and I had to send it off to Neumann for repair. The previous owner ripped out the XLR connector and I bought it in non-functioning condition for really cheap. Along with re-attaching the connector, the capsule was in such bad shape that cleaning wasn't even an option. They replaced it with a genuine K87 capsule and it functions fully up to spec now. Yes my U87 is still an antique since everything else is still from 1979 like the body, internal circuit, and the original leather case. My advice is to just have Neumann clean or replace the capsule if it needs it. Never ever get a reskinned capsule for the sake of having the original capsule. It will never be the same! Good luck to you man! I'm seeing a lot more poorly conditioned, modded, and reskinned vintage U87s listed on the market lately.

      That’s the smart way to do it. If Neumann replaced parts with original spares then you get a perfect result!

    Hi Ronnie, just discovered your channel with your videos about Stam Audio's U87i and subscribed. Does the U87i only work with its own power supply or also with phantom power and audio recorders like the Zoom F3? Does it have a normal XLR cable? Greets from Berlin!

    • @ronniesmusic173
      @ronniesmusic173 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Welcome to my channel! Berlin is the home of Neumann who make some of my favourite mics (as you may have noticed)! The Stam SA87i works with phantom power, it does not have its own power supply and also no battery compartment. Normal XLR out

    • @vonwolfersdorff
      @vonwolfersdorff 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Ronnie, yes Neumann is in Berlin. I should visit them sometime! I also looked at the SA47 tube, but this one has a big power unit for the tube, that is why I asked about the SA87i phantom power. I also look at Soyuz microphones and I have the Soyuz 1973 entry mic. Have you heard of them?

    • @ronniesmusic173
      @ronniesmusic173 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven’t tried Soyuz but I have understood that they make good mics. Tube mics need to warm them up for 30 mins, so I moved over to using the U87 and the SA87i as my main vocal mics. That way I can record straight away when I have a good moment.

    Ronnie that Neumann U87ai is so thin on your voice its awful, the Stam kills it. I think taking the highs out of the Stam was the wrong call, I think your positioning affected the with the guitar. I say this because with the voice the Stam was not harsh up top like the Neumann U87AI

    • @ronniesmusic173

      I really like both microphones. Stam is definitely brighter no matter the exact placement of the mic, and I find it more flattering on vocals. Just out of interest, what equipment are you listening on?
