Thinking of moving there from downtown Newark with my 2 kids but I hear the school systems aren't good at all! ... I really want to be in a diverse community that's affordable with a great school district. Any advice?😑😑

Born in Bayonne in the 1950s. Bergen Point. That area of development on the SW side of Bayonne used to be Standard Oil. My grandfather worked there for decades. Huge fire there in the early 1960s, black smoke was unbelievable.

I lived in Bayonne, NJ, for over 10 years. I personally couldn't get out of there fast enough. When I left a couple of years ago, it was riddled with drugs, theft, and very ignorant people. Yes, Bayonne is a small town, but as it starts to change, more people who were born and bred there are being pushed out. It is trying to thrive. I give it that. But for the past few years, living there has been an uphill battle. I believe that one day, Webster's Dictionary will define the "Small Town, Small Mind Mentally" with a picture of Bayonne, NJ, as an example. And I certainly believe is overrated.

@@newjerseylivinggroup I want to clarify that I have met some good people there. When I first moved there in 2005, Bayonne was a charming small town with families who had lived there for generations. Born and raised in New York City, I bought into the small-town concept. Let's remember that Bayonne is approximately four miles long (Maybe less), with a population of about sixty thousand. I think the beginning of their downfall began with their little real estate boom. They began to build condos they couldn't sell, and property management, to protect their investment, began to rent to undesirables on welfare stipends. It was a matter of time before the crime rate went up. The families that had lived in Bayonne from generation to generation now dealt with a new environment of crime. Here is an example of how the culture changed. In 2005, I picked up a Bayonne NewsPaper, and the front page news was, "PitBull Barked at Pedestrians." With a mugshot of a dog behind the fence. My friends and I in New York laughed for days. Another front-page news article was "Stolen Bicycle in Front of John's Candy Store." Subtitle, "If you know the whereabouts of Jimmy's bike. Please get in touch with the Bayonne Police Department." When I left Bayonne, these funny front-page news flashes became more about drugs, theft, and, in some cases, murder. BPD (Bayonne Police Department) would definitely modify their statistics not to reflect that. And remember, Bayonne brags about being close to NYC. I would like to challenge you to draft a travel map from Bayonne to NY and factor in the cost of getting there. You'll be surprised by how many hops you must make or how much it costs to get from Bayonne to Midtown, NY. For me, it was worth it in 2005, not in 2022 when I left.

@David, you are at the doorstep of dining-entertainment-social scenes of Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn/Downtown Jersey City/Hoboken, 1 hour from the Jersey shore, roughly 90 minutes from the Pocono Mountains, and less than an hour from great suburban hangouts like Montclair, South Orange, and Millburn! Bayonne may not have everything to offer within it's boarders, but it is a great location that is not far from the greatest attractions in the NYC suburbs!
