  • This episode was recorded in Bayonne, New Jersey. On our second visit to Bayonne, we begin the episode at the DiDominico Park at 16th St. This park is very much tucked away out of site along the lower west side of Bayonne. Looking over the park is one of the hidden gems of Bayonne, a small townhouse development called The Point. We feature interior footage of a unit just listed for sale. The high end finishes give a taste of Bayonne luxury along the Newark Bay! We then visit a few multi family and one single family recent sale to show how the market is performing in Bayonne.

16 Street Park it’s Di Do-min-e-co Park. Glad you’re doing housing in Bayonne.

Thanks for the comment @joannewsome5202! I appreciate the pronunciation clarification...I only knew it as the 16th St park prior to doing the video.

Hi, Before they Renamed it in honor of him, it was known as 15th Street Park since the 1920s. It was just a small little park with a kiddie pool in lower level & a few swings on upper level & Basketball courts where the pool is now. Where the houses are now, there was a baseball stadium hat Bayonne High School used. mayor Di Dominick owned a large bus company. Regular busses ran on Boulevard to NYC during the day. Then he opened his touring bus company & made a killing. He became very rich & involved in politics. He became our first Italian%American mayor. Before that it had been only Irish & few Polish.
It was his dream to build a municipal pool & he did . After he died, they dedicated the park to his name. We had a four term mayor, Mayor Fitzpatrick & his park is on First Street Waterfront. That’s where Tom Cruise was helicoptered in & out of Bayonne when he was making War of the Worlds.. he was very nice. I saw him pose for pictures with fans before he left each day & sign autographs.
But Bayonne’s pride & joy is HUDSON COUNTY PARK , tubby the County for the County residents and now known as Stephen Gregg H.C. Park. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor & now there’s a small, bronze statue on a pedestal of him on JFK Boulevard, in the middle of the park. I’ve seen a few videos of Bayonne & the person just walks/drives by it without noticing. He was a wonderful human being. Very kind & humble but extremely brave. He passed away a few years ago. The Turnpike bridge to Newark is named after our second Medal of Honor winner. Bayonne has a very rich history, first settled by the Dutch in early 1600, it was the Southern tip of the oldest settlement. Bergen, which encompasses most of Hudson County on the waterfront. In the early 1900# John D Rockefeller built his Standard Oil Company here which really made Bayonne. He built the beautiful Public Library, the YMCA on east 22nd Street & the brick Garden Apartments for his workers on East 11th Street. It was a big deal to work for “Standard”. It meant a job for life.
Fitzpatrick was mayor during the riots of the 1970s. He saved Bayonne by closing off all the
Roads into Bayonne at the Northern end & saved Bayonne.
Enjoyed your two videos on Bayonne.I learned a lot about future developments but think the City Planners are expecting too much & doing too much over development.
Bayonne’s charm was its small town feel. So-called luxury apartments won’t bring home- steamers here; they won’t care about Bayonne. We don’t have enough schools. Activities, sewer & water lines, etc to take care of thousands more.
You also missed rage whole redevelopment area that was MOTBY which the Government sold to Bayonne for a $1,.00. There’s a Costco, Walmart , Lowe’s & many small businesses.

The constant building is not benefiting the neighborhood

Thanks for the comment @ryandarko2115. That is certainly a valid argument. The building certain changes the dynamics of the neighborhood with population density, traffic, and housing prices. There are long time residents who do not favor those types of changes. There are also benefits with infrastructure, new businesses, and increased tax base that comes with development. It can be a 2 edged sword, and the opinion on the positive vs negative overall outcome is in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks for the comment @La Tanja! Yes, that was a noted exclusion for this episode. Bayonne's schools have a B rating.
