  • It isn't uncommon to find a rear wheel drive BMW for sale, but is this really a deal breaker? With the proper equipment rear wheel drive is absolutely a car that can be used in all conditions. Tires can make all the difference on the track, but it doesn't stop there. Even on the road tires can make any car safe and enjoyable or a nightmare if the tire isn't right.

    Tenza does this mean you've never been stuck in the snow?

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been stuck in the snow twice in the last 7 years of driving them. Both times have been my fault. The first time the snow is really deep. I should have turned around in my driveway and got into the deep snow forward. instead I backed out, put it in reverse and that’s when I got stuck. The second time I was playing around in a parking lot and got to close to a really deep drift. Both times could’ve been prevented. I just wasn’t thinking ahead enough.

    “BMW being bad in the snow” comes from people using summer tyres in the winter! Here in the UK not many people change tyres at all. Even with no snow it is much better to change to winter/all season.

      Thanks for the info! I'm currently debating whether to purchase a 2022 430 grand coupe rear wheel and nervous cause I also live up a hill so looking to see reviews on it terms of handling in snow and ice. Was told that with all traction control and snow buttons on it I'll be fine but still nervous

    my e60 was really bad in the snow, i think its partly because it was automatic, i really had good snow tiers but whenever there was a bit higher hill - other cars with fwd could get up and i just couldn't. Moved to e90 325i xdrive and i really never felt safer.

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ive never owned an E60 so I can't say for sure but the tires make the difference. Auto vs Manual can make a difference but my Auto 128i was the best car in the snow I've ever had.

    I’ve never had an issue with them. Driving number 5 right now. The first 4 were up in NY. No issues except getting out of snowed in spots. The lack of mechanical lsd is a major issue. Of course, all but my E39 had X-drive, but still.

    • @TenzaMotorsports

      Tenza Motorsports 1991 Nissan Hardbody. I’ll put 10 cinder block (300-350) over that rear axle to the tail gate and use chains to get it going but my BMW Z3 M roadster I can just pull it out of the garage and go. Not fast but we get icee more then snow. I really want to try them studded tires. I now have a extra set of wheels for both my truck and Z and studs can be ran between nov-March but I’d change them when I know the weather was going to be bad. Otherwise I got chain for all wheel in both.

    the term 'snow tires' is incorrect and causes a misconception for those driving in winter conditions that may not get significant amounts of snowfall. 'Winter tires' are required when temperatures fall below 40deg., summer performance tires turn into rocks when subjected to winter temperatures due to the rubber compounds used in their design. Winter tires are designed w/ rubber compounds that keep the tires pliable in cold weather. Invest in rim / tire set up for winter ... your car will thank you

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good point. Terminology is very important for giving the right context. When talking to someone who isn’t as knowledgeable about a topic we have to be careful. I think it’s a local thing. We get snow every year, no matter what. Most people are awd with all seasons. So when you have people who run a performance tire in the summer, we are changing out our tires for the snow. Snow hits my area around late October and doesn’t let up until around march.

  • @umufella

    I currently have a rwd 328 and live where it snows a lot do you recommend switching over to run flat winter tires or just regular winter tires my current tires are currently run flat

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normal winter tires will be better in the snow. But you’ll lose the run flat insurance. It’s really up to you. I know often times run flats can cost more, so that might be a deciding factor as well.

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup my e46 weight distribution is messed up too. Once you start to strip it out for the race track it’ll start to show. You can pull way more out of the rear of the car than you can the front.

    I have F31 and it is really amazing when driving on snow and we have lot in her Finland atm. But anyways iwas wondering how much 50/50 weight dist. has to do withit cause my friend ha Merc W204 rwd and he says that it is terrible and get stuck everywhere even with decebt studs lol? Mybe BMW has done better job with traction control system also ?

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the car is rear wheel drive and the engine is in the front, it's important to have more weight over the back wheels. 50/50 distribution helps a lot when it come to these cars. If you compare this to a muscle car that has a big V8 in the front. The weight is over the front wheels, the rear wheels have a hard time getting the grip it needs.

  • @sentoneYYC

    its difficult to hear someone saying "all season" works fine when by the laws of physics the rubber composition on a winter tire was scientifically created to sustain drastic drops in temperature without impacting the elasticity or flexibility of the compound. Something that the all season by the rules of physics cannot sustain.

    • @TenzaMotorsports
      @TenzaMotorsports  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve driven in a region that gets snow for 6+ months every year. Out of my 14 years of driving 11 winters have been on all season tires. And 10 of those 11 years were with rear wheels drive bmws. All season works fine. Winter tires are just better.

    • @sentoneYYC
      @sentoneYYC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TenzaMotorsports Your luck don't count as the rule the same way they don't eliminate the rules oh physics in dictating that the chemical compound of the all season will harden in colder temperatures, extending the braking distance and increasing the chance of an accident. You just haven't been to a situation you crossed the threshold. But to recommend all season in winter knowing you have been to one that last 6 months (myself included as I live in central Ontario) is reckless.

      @@sentoneYYC I live in NJ & I've never used winter or snow tires in my life. We get "classic" winters here. I know how to drive, so it's no big deal. This also goes for just about every single person I know.
