How to Handle a Tire Blowout in a Big Rig

  • A tire blowout on a big rig can be very dangerous. Dave talks about 'what to do' in the event of a tire blowout when driving a semi.
    It's vital to 'get control' of the vehicle. When a tire blows, the steering ability is comprised, so it's really important to be in control of the vehicle, with both hands on the steering wheel.
    The second thing to do, is to slow the truck down carefully and pull off to the side of the road, or a safe place, depending on where you are.
    It's critical to have your head about you and not panic in such a situation.
    When stopped, don't fling the door of the truck open and jump out. That's very dangerous, and the driver can put himself in harm's way, especially when parked at the side of the road in heavy traffic.
    Take a good look at the blown tire and assess the situation and the damage.
    Then call dispatch and/or a repair truck for assistance. If the tire is a single, be sure to tell the repair truck you also need a rim if necessary.
    Stay safe and do the smart thing.
    Move slowly, think carefully for best results.

    A driver cannot control a steer blowout when they are speed limited! I was trained to accelerate a bit to overcome the blowout and ease to the curb. Most Rookies stab the breaks, go into a Jack-Knife and end up along the interstate!

      Grab trailer brake while slight on throttle.It make the truck lighter on steer.Then slow on down.It worked for me.But i was not going down hill.

      "trained to accelerate after blowing a tire" .. sounds like another truck driver myth and is only exceed by the drivers who believe the faster they go, the better their fuel mileage.
      There's lots of misguided information out there.

    You need to power up first during a tire blowout before trying to slow. Counter intuitive, but flooring the accelerator adds power to the duals, shifting weight to the rear and also forcing the forward direction to counter the pull to the side. Once you're under control you can find a safe spot to pull off and slow to a stop. Brakes at speed will cause the pull to increase, leading to loss of lane, loss of control, and even a roll over. Be safe out there.

    I believe the trolley brake would help. I never had the experience, but trained myself to apply the trailer brake first, to ease the pressure on the steer axle.

    I put your video on a company facebook page. I was trying to tell their drivers what to do if you get a blowout on one of the steer tires. We were talking about a accident where 8 people were killed because the driver did not know what to do. Two of the drivers said there is nothing you can do. I put your video on their site and was kicked off. Scary, a lot of the new drivers only get three weeks of training. I went to a state run school, it was 8 weeks and cost a lot less. I think that is why they kicked me off, I said that a lot of companies will not hire drivers that go to them schools, like RoadMaster. I also think the driver will be charged in that accident in New Mexico that killed 8 people when he lost control and went into oncoming traffic and hit a Greyhound bus. That is sad that so many people lost their lives because the driver panicked or did not know what to do. To bad the driver did not see this video. I got a blowout on my steer tire and because I was taught what to do and did not panic I did not crash and nobody hurt. Keep on trucking.

    Could you make a video of chaining up an axle after a flat to move the tractor trailer to a safe spot. Is it possible to do with a super single? Thanks, and we enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them!

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a really good question! I've never had super singles myself but I don't see why you couldn't boom up the wheel to try to save the rim while you moved it. Let me research it a little. Dave

      Smart-Trucking.com I appreciate it Dave. We ran into this problem the other day on a friend's truck and the axle sagged way too much. I run duals on my truck and trailer and will stick to the tried and true! -Edgar

      First thing to do is get your tape measure (or length of string) to find the length of chain you will need; Next, parked in a safe area, dump the suspension (which is all you need to do to chain housing up to frame) & determine length needed to wrap the shortest distance around frame & axle housing (adding 6-12" for uneven ground situations/also carrying a few 2x4 sections to stuff under flat/rim to get axle high enuff in the event of uneven ground); Third, cut two short sections of tow chain (Grade 70 or similar) for the use. Fourth, keep it with your standard BFE tool/repair kit to save your bacon! Last, don't forget to reinflate suspension & enjoy your ride knowing a blowout doesn't necessarily have to mean your day is shot!!! 😎👍

    • @westtexastll1978
      @westtexastll1978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Platinum Clap with Super Singles it may or may not work depending on which axle the flat is on (drive or interlock axle??); You could try locking if flat is on drive axle for short distances (i.e. to get safely off main roadway)... 🤔??

    What if my rig doesn't have a engine brake? Simply control it and coast with some well timed downshifts?

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My advice is if you don't have an engine brake, stay out of the mountains and allow lots and lots of time to stop!

    ease on the jimmy handle to slow and keep your trailer straight with the tractor. then worry about your hazard lights. strong arm the tractor towards the right side.

      I heard from a driver that saved his self from a roll over with a flat bed trailer full of hay rolls by tapping trailer brake handle. I haul wood chips I don't get near the posted speed of a ramps more like 1/2 the speed. This is not a ticket to go faster around a curve. For I know you can roll a chip truck in a straight line going over rough terrain to fast. I've had 2 with swift 6 with log trks all in a Curve. Three pushed me 1/2 way in to the next lane had I went against it I probably would had wipe out. 1 load of 16 oz bottles 2 don't remember 3 a log trailer. I didn't roll be cause I was barely over under the threshold. A far as I know none of my tires left the ground.

    I've been driving for 45 yrs an have blown 5 steer tires at different speeds the slower speeds are more likely to wreck you. In any case never brake hard people panic brake hard an wreck
    One was speeds close to 100 it was easiest. Most drivers never have the experience after you've been there you can tell how you react

    Dave, What do you think of the govt saying : due to the pipeline leak situation, that truckers carrying fuel will be allowed to run over their allotted working hours. Do you think this is putting the safety of driver above corporate welfare? And will the drivers affected be getting paid these extra hours at overtime rates?

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well,let me first start by saying that only the driver himself truly knows when he's had enough and needs to sleep. So when the govt. first tells you when you need to sleep and then turns around and says, forget that, we have an emergency here, they've just tossed their own credibility right out the window! As far as these drivers being paid overtime,I sure hope so but I'm not holding my breath. Dave

    Had one steering axle blowout in my First year When i got my licence, the good thing was that i was going just 35mph at that moment and it was a 4-axle tipper, so there were 2 steering axles. stopped the truck at the side of the Road, waited until traffic behind me passed completely and got out of the truck then and collected the big Tire pieces that layed on the Road, so no one else would get damage on his vehicle When going over it. kept calm all the time till the New Tire was there and then kept going. had to replace the complete right Fender, completely destroyed by the air Pressure from the tire. I think i handled the situation pretty good, there for that it was my First blowout at all :) @Smart-Trucking.com

      I wish some one had told me about put the pedal down.All I knew was don't hit the brake. One 2 week summer camp with the Army two men where in a new 5 ton boom recovery wrecker with auto air pressure tires military. Rim to ground over a foot the driver grabs the brake hard and hard steer to shoulder the right side flat dug into soft shoulder and plow hard left and truck rolls over killing one that I know. Top speed was 60. was lower to 45 mandatory. Truck was as stable as cement truck which is very roll prone.
