  • Join along as we give the 8820 a check over before we get rolling. With the help from Robert we roll into the 1st corn of the year. Even with it being wet the combine is doing great job till sparks and noises stop us. With a bad bearing on the straw chopper it's repair time already. Thanks for watching along.

I love all the comments from professionals armchair farmers. He’s starting from scratch and using second hand equipment because in the real world that’s all a new farmer can afford to start with. Keep working on the problems as they come up and keep doing the best you can do Duffy !!

Fan speed in corn should be about maximum, about 1000 rpm. That cleaning fan belt is shot. Adjust while combine is running.
One know problem is the fan adjuster brackets can be bent. To squeeze the adjuster sheaves together more: the rod with a hook on one end, and a bolt hole on the other can have a half inch cut out and welded back together to make it shorter. Gives more squeeze adjustment.
Sieve and chaffer should be mostly wide open. Around 5/8” or wider on sieve, and 3/4” or more on chaffer. Hard to throw corn out the back.
At least pull the chopper sharp knives out for corn. Chopper Hammers are not to be sharp. New ones have square edges.
Let the combine empty out before going to idle on engine, lowering the engine speed too quickly can get a bunch of corn in the fan from low air flow while the shoe augers are still emptying out. I spent 15 years as a Deere dealer combine mechanic. Good luck.

have ran many an hour in those 00 and 20 series deere combines. Never ever ran corn with the chopper on. even with the slowdown kit it beats them up too much. The fan filling with corn is because the sieve is too tight, open it up as wide as a cob of corn and leave it. adjust the chaffer to get your sample better. in beans you'll use both. Many older farmers took the sieves completely out in corn. Clamp the concave down until its stripping the cobs clean but leaving them whole out the back. Also either the variable pulley is worn out and needs to be rebuilt or the belt is worn down and not wide enough to get the speed you want.

I agree with a lot of the previous comments. It's a learning curve and you are tackling the issues as you identify them. Getting to know a new machine is always a slow go. Getting to know a "new - to - you - BUT used machine" is a whole new ballpark. I think your time is being well spent, getting the kinks out. After all this is year 1 on the new farm, doing new things. This will put you ahead of the game for the 2024 season. Keep up the great content and thanks for taking us along!

Been there with the chopper many times. Ended up by a used set of rubber flap spreaders which made the machine way smoother and way less maintenance. Probably wouldn’t work the best for beans but corn they are plenty good for spreading.
Lot of critics in here😂 looks like a normal first day hiccups for me. You have two very minor issues and you’ll be back at it.

That belt isn't stretched it is worn too thin! I had exactly the same problem on mine combine with the reel speed adjustment. How ever i adjust it it ran almost the same speed and the belt seemed a bit loose. I went and bought a new belt it was nearly double the width! Now variable reel speed adjustment works like a dream.

On a 9010 series the owners manual says not to run the chopper in corn. Do some research on a power shut down. I believe the manual covers that. It will show you how to get the correct concave setting. After that you adjust cylinder speed based on grain condition vs unshelled corn. Lots to learn but nobody gets 20 years experience without the first year. Love the vids. Keep up the good work.

As others have said if the belt is wore too narrow they won’t spin fast enough. Our 6620 also had the sliding sheeve on the pulley wear the center out so it wouldn’t run fast enough. Taking the chopper off frees up horsepower. As long as you do something to break up the residue hopefully it won’t cause plugging in tillage tools. Balance is very important on a straw chopper knives are reversible don’t need to sharpen them the dry material shatters not like a forage harvester

Best rules I learned running combine was
corn still on the cob, tighten the concave down
Damaged corn slow the cylinder down
Set the sieves open until the sample gets dirty
And a dirty sample was better than corn being tossed out the back
8820’s do better when there full
And it never does corn any good to get run through the cylinder twice with the tailings
Grandpa ran the 20 series combined for decades loved them. With enough time and patience you can make them run like a Swiss watch. Good luck on your harvest

I ran a JD6600 it had 2 rotating spinners in the back, bearing went bad, I cut the belt and went back to work, the last month I ran it the adjuster for the speed variator would not stay where I wanted it to, held it in place with vise grips, I was lucky to have a person to guide me in running a combine, small adjustments can make a huge difference also I would start at 5:00 in the morning, you can pick corn with frost on it, then when the sun came up I would stop for an hour to let it melt off, damp and wet corn is a pain to deal with, I had some one year that ran 18 to 19 percent moisture, ran through the combine like butter

  • @frankwurth5375
    @frankwurth5375 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I always just dropped the chopper when in corn. The heavy cobs hitting the rotating knives at full speed , the debris becomes a high speed missile that at the least, will destroy the ends of the straw walkers and the rear hood of the machine. On our Axial flow there isn't even a chopper on it, don't miss the aggravation of dealing with it! Anytime you have corn ending up down in the fan, that's a big problem. Is it a leak in the auger bed above it ? or is it backing up from the sieves? That grain hitting the fan blades will chew the blades up in no time at all. You weren't feeding the corn head fast enough to over load the cleaning sieves unless their too closed tight. A rule of mine on setting them, top one , 1/2 to 2/3 open bottom 1/3 open. The idea is to allow easy flow into the clean grain pan, but run enough air to float out the chaf. Get that air duct clean and that will allow much better air flow. Critters love to get in those spaces over winter and fill it up with their habitat trash! If too much big trash is getting onto the bottom seive adjust the top a bit closer. That big fan on that machine should have enough air at full tilt to blow whole grain out the back, then we slow it down enough to eliminate the loss. Normally if the bottom sieve is too closed it will over load the return elevator and choke it. Are we sure the return elevator is running? A lot of things to check on a unknown machine, that's why if possible I prefer to run it in the daylight till I know every thing is good. You'll get there just takes a bit of patience with older combines that haven't had the best care.

Yes, slide the sections out to do corn. The flails are not sharpened. the sections do the cutting for straw or beans. It's important to balance the chopper. It will vibrate apart if not. While you are there, change the other chopper bearing. If one went bad, it worked on the other. Fan belt is shot. Make sure the spring pully slides to keep tension on the fan belt.
I'm gonna say it. Keep that combine out of the rain. It's already melting. Get some greenhouse hoops and extensions and tech screw steel horizontally up and over the bows. Make it long enough if you'd also want to store your chopper too.
That corn will not be ready till into December. You may be combining New Year's Day.

On the fan drive both the top and bottom pulleys have a big roll pin in them to keep both halves spinning the same speed. These can wear and break off letting one half of the pulley spin on the shaft while the belt slips on the other pulley half.

Unless you go over those machines every winter, you will be screwed by mid season of the second year.

Its your combine and the corn isnt ready yet anyways, ignore all the naysayers, this is your equipment

When your corn is 30%- Why not fix your lights and stuff? Your gettin there! I wouldnt adjust too much with the corn that wet- might just end up changing it back when its dry

90% of the people commenting have never ran a 20 series combine they talk like it’s a s780 don’t listen to there settings… I still call and ask my dad for advice on our s780 and he always says “well my 8820 never had that problem” 😂 keep doing what your doing that 8820 may need some love but I bet you it’ll do a better job and produce a cleaner sample than any of this new stuff

That sprocket has a lot of wear. It may last awhile, but if it wears too much the rollers will start riding on the tip of the sprocket teeth.

Out of curiosity, have you considered making cornstalk bales? Or are they out of the question due to time and resources?

    Terminology is off.
People are gracious to let you know and give you the correct terminology. You don't even try to be thankful and correct yourself. Instead, you try to insult them by calling them "Super Farmers".

Chris do any of the lights you took off work? IIRC there were a couple of small LED light bars on it . Put them back on to cover the head.
Used equipment is an adventure that few can stand😅
