Why not just try again next year? Why give up? Just try to improve upon your result next year and push for 75 in the qualifier. Take advantage of the years you are physically able to play well, that way you don't look back in a decade or two and wish you had.
Agreed, most people would love to be good enough to even have a chance to attempt qualifying. Would love to see you give it another go, we enjoy seeing your competitive juices get flowing.

Again I've all the respect for Rick as a TH-cam golfer and his content but when he talks like he's up there to compete on the tour.....I'm sorry he's not. It's a different level ....totally ⛳️
@@TtvPhenrik1 +9 or +12, a distinction without a difference. Neither are close to qualifying by a substantial margin and neither player should be criticized for trying. I can think of one case where I made comments about a player's tournament scores. In my large size city's amateur championship, one of the players with a +2 handicap didn't break 100 in any of the 3 rounds on different courses of the tournament. Vanity handicap immediately came to mind. I suppose the player could have been injured, but shooting 100+ ??? I think he should have withdrawn because he would be distracting and slowing down other players trying to do their best.
@@twostate7822 there has been a bit of back and forth. Especially in Peters camp. When they talked about the last golfbidder challenge, a turd in the rough cut studio laughed and dissed Rick. Yes I agree but it won't happen, don't you know Rick is the only TH-cam amateur golfer who has came up with all the golfing content on TH-cam.................
Yeah, great point, Guy and Rick took the piss out of him for trying, basically saying he had no chance so it was stupid to do, now they are squeezing a bit of content out of it the same way and its a great idea.
I played one of my worst rounds of golf this morning and truly left the course feeling like I wanted to give up on golf. This podcast was as entertaining as watching the Open qualifying round. Hearing the behind the scenes thoughts and emotions is what it’s all about. Keep it going next year, and do the best you can for as long as you can!
I loved the Open video. Limited commentary and some good golf. I enjoyed not knowing what shot was going to be hit or attempted to be hit. Should sprinkle a few Break 75s in this format on your channel.
Love the positivity. You’re right you hit the ball well. You really do need a caddy to keep you level and someone you’d listen to when they tell you the line to take or the best place to miss. Like to see you video it again.
Great podcast, and signs of self-awareness. Thrilled to hear you will give it another go. @15:25 and the better you are playing, Rick, the better we (well, I at least) enjoy watching. Just saying. I often struggle to watch you struggle, while still trying to produce watch-worthy content. Focus on improving your game (physical and mental) and becoming competitive, and take us along for the ride. That's the content I will enjoy most, and the better you get, the louder I'll cheer 😊.
No accountability, and he deserves it for being arrogant, acting like he’s so good he didn’t need a caddie, instead taking an entire team of camera man, making the whole event about him, his playing partners must of been so annoyed at Rick searching for lost balls at nearly every hole
I've recently joined the Amateur Players Tour in the US. I've picked up golf about 5 years ago, this year I'm down to about 13hcp and the competition mindset (though I've played college baseball) is a whole different animal. It's still amateur stuff and nowhere near this, but the preparation and performance in those events is hugely different. So glad to hear you're gonna keep grinding! I do hope you film all the Open Qual. rounds you play though, its so fun to watch, especially for us American viewers who dont have the opportunity to play all those great links courses. Rick, you hit some pretty good recovery shots, but I’ve got a few tips that might help you get over the hump. 1. Throw that driver in a trash can. 2. Pour gasoline in the trash can. 3. Toss a lit match in the trash can. 4. Go find your Ping driver. 5. Go play golf. I know you didn’t like the Qi10 max driver because you didn’t get very good distance with it, but perhaps with a proper fitting you might be able to squeeze out a few more yards. When I had my fitting, I was able to get the most distance with the standard model as well, and the max was reliably straight like you, but I was only losing seven yards on average with the max. I opted for the reliability, and it’s now the club I have the absolute most confidence in off the tee box. I just get the sense that you’re wanting to make the Cobra work for you, almost a square peg in a round hole.
It makes me kind of sad that the cobra driver doesn’t work for him. I play the dark speed and I love it. I feel like cobra doesn’t nearly get played because everyone so focused on taylormade n all other brands but they make really great products.
What I love most about TH-cam golf is, that it’s relatable. I’d much rather watch you struggle a bit and pull off a decent score or win. Because I struggle out on the course. 81 on an Open Championship qualifying course without a reliable driver and being smack in the middle of a serious short game slump is quite admirable. Sort out the tee situation; we will sacrifice the driver reviews. Build back the confidence around the green.

the way you play that back 9 was stunning, you just need to do that for 72 holes and you can start competing on the challenge tour then eventually the european tour once you've won a few events on the challenge tour, then once you win a couple of time on the european tour you'll get your pga tour card and into all the majors, and then who knows you could end up with 6 majors at the end of you career

Hit the nail on head when said “you feel like there is a good game in there” it will come, and got do the qualifier every year although no usual commentary it’s drama and entertaining…we are all behind you
I compete in many sports. Winning requires you to play the game on 3 levels. 1) Mentally - know the rules, strategies, your strengths/weaknesses, how to adapt, how to focus. 2) Emotionally - you must have the drive, determination, confidence, courage, guts, aggressiveness to go for it. 3) Physically - you have to have put in the time to develop the skills and be able to execute the desired strategies and shots. Anyone can learn #1 and practice to develop #3. Developing emotional strength takes just as much work as developing physical strength. This is the what separates someone who crumbles after a bad first 9 and someone who comes back to shoot -1 over the next 8 holes even though "winning" is impossible.
Honestly Rick beside the bunker shot and the blow up on the last this was a very solid round. +6 on two holes +3 on 16. That’s good for ya bud. Love the content and enjoy every bit of the qualifier!
It was more than those 2 shots. The long iron off the tee, was pretty bad. He was constantly in the long fescue. He did hit some amazing shots out of it though to save his par. I would love to see him hit a hybrid off the tee, or a 5 wood. He also needs to find a different driver, and maybe play a little more forgiving iron. His back nine was pretty impressive though until 18.
Good point on goal setting. I think with Open Qualifying no matter how well you're playing, or what you think your limit is you HAVE to go in with the mindset of qualifying for the next phase. Going in with "Break 75" as the goal was probably too low and then as you said yourself you start to accept or want 77, 78, 79 quite quickly. Good reflection, lets go again next year.
It looked like that course was difficult on the day. The bounces were ridiculous like a trampoline. Well done Rick. Definitely do it more & more. 9+ is now a baseline to break in the next one!
Agreed, If you are serious about improving your game and getting to final qualifying, I think you should update break 75 to break 70 or at least 72. That alone would be the true challenge you need over the year to better prepare.
You realistically have to beat the goal consistently first before increasing the goal. That’s like me saying I am going out to beat 90 without ever hitting the range. 😂 Never going to get there.
Great qualifier Rick, don’t worry about the golf. If you are happy with just playing, you will never be disappointed with the results. There were more than 2 bad shots, until your honest with yourself you will never improve.
That's a great attitude Rick. Your job is content creator, the main goal is to make entertaining video's and in that regard you're incredibly successful. This requires running a business. Playing golf may be the main content, but it's not your biggest priority in life, everyone knows that and nobody expects you to play in the majors. We just want to see some good content, which is exactly what we get.
I'm far from your level of play, but I can relate so much to you. So many times, it's the two or three deflating holes that depress me. But I look back at the other 15 holes and things don't seem quite as bad. My best to you!
You did well Rick S, getting into 100 in Open qualifying when its not your earning profession is great. Very good round on a competitive tournament. No regrets. Just great sport
I play tournament golf and obviously casual golf. To me they are exactly the same. I have never felt more pressure playing tourney golf in front of a crowd than playing with my mates. I try to play the absolute best golf every time I tee it up. I also always make sure I have fun and enjoy every second of the round. I am a 3 handicap. Never understood the pressure people put on themselves...it hurts your game.
Love this video. How about picking a course and on the "practice day" film a break 75 and the next day shoot a "Qualify for the Open" video where you try and shoot a score that had been posted in an Open qualifier in the past on that same course?
I'd love to see you go for it again Rick, sure you had two bad holes but like you mentioned you played some great golf as well. Even with the triple on 18 that back nine was awesome to watch brother. You're a legend in this game man, I'm sure I speak for many when I say we follow you not because you're one of the best golfers on the planet, but because we can actually relate to you
Why is the speed up on the video? Rick pitch is high in this and they seem to be talking quick 🤔, and I already checked the settings on my video and account and it is all set to normal speed 🤷🏻
You need to really sign up for Decade golf. Scott really focuses on “not making birdies “. You talked about using a fade off the tee yet you didn’t commit. Front 9 you didn’t drive well after 1. Scott has great videos that are only on the app. Explains it all. It has helped me. Love everything you guys do!!!
Really enjoyed the Open qualifying edit, serious work by the team, unlucky Rick, take the two triples away and it was a v good round. Funny, if i ever break 85 i will be thrilled🤣
Rick I always enjoy your content weather it's casual rounds, instructional or tournament. A bad score will never drive your true fans away, and 81 sheesh I wish I could shoot an 81
Golf-wise me & Rick are in a very similar position. I’m a former 3+ and now struggling to play off 4. I’ve had the yips in my chipping for over 2 years and I hit rock bottom. Fortunately I am getting better but the frustration of playing bad golf almost made me walk away from the game as I just wasn’t enjoying it.
We use to have a senior professional that told us as young players listen to us saying I could have done better , his always said if you could have you would have ………tournament golf is hard …..well done for trying Rick …..you still have the fire …..👍👍👍
Currently playing off 2 and concerned I have a similar mentality to Rick right now, when playing a tough course I don’t feel I can get dropped shots back atm.
The qualifying video was entertaining, and relatable Rick - You just couldn't get it going on the front nine but the back nine was solid (we'll ignore the tee shot on 18..) Gotta go for it again next year mate, you're one of many that didn't get it over the line, but while you're in a position in life to able to have a crack, then you HAVE to take those opportunities. 👍
Playing high level Strokeplay events adds a whole extra level of pressure that club competitions, which are often stableford, simply don’t replicate. Anybody criticising you who hasn’t experienced playing with strangers and strokeplay should put themselves through it and see what it feels like.
Respect for having a crack and being prepared to document it. But don't milk it now. Two bad shots? We saw it mate. Good luck to you but don't delude yourself.
I think any golfer with any conviction beats themselves up after a round and has to take time to process it. Match play comps are particularly hard to bear as you can , as in my case this weekend, narrow it down to 2 or 3 shots and a couple of putts that don’t fall. I’m 55 captain of Upavon Golf Club and my game if anything is still getting better. So don’t give up Rick. I’m sure I speak for most of your audience saying we enjoy watching all the TH-camrs take on the Open Qualifying Challenge. There is always next year!
Rick, two bad shots come on shippers you were missing the fairway with an iron off the tee and not just by a little bit 😂 loved watching the open qualifying video great content as always.
Rick I think you are an inspiration to millions of amateur golfers. Not all of us want to play in competitions of any sort, we just want to play as well as possible and enjoy playing.
Would've, could've, should've is the trap that most if not all golfers fall into looking backwards to what happened. The challenge is often focusing on the most important shot you have which is your next one. A maddening game. 😅
For what it's worth, I would suggest to forget about the end score and create a course plan. Plan each shot for each hole that will allow you a birdie and try to execute every single one of those shots while minimizing risk. Don't just try to hit straight and play as you go. Plan each shot and make THAT shot. Get to green according to your birdie plan and you'll either sink the putt or 2 putt for par. If you miss a shot to the green hopefully it will be par or bogie. Make a plan, execute the plan and the score will come.
Compare Rick's first tee shot to Peter Finch's. Great to watch both matches and all credit to everyone who took part. We who criticise from the sidelines have no idea what it can do to your head when you step up to the mark. Well done all TH-camrs! 👏👏👏
Rick had an easier course from what we see on the final scoreboards yet barely scored better than Finch, both were spraying the driver and playing from the rough all day lol tough result
I still maintain that tee to green is fine...you need to keep grinding at that chipping and your approach shots will improve as the feeling of "I can get up and down"
You did hit some really good golf shots on your round … I felt for you when you hit some of those layup shots into the weeds or OB (gawd how many times have I done that !! 😂) …. You know what you did on course management but for me you left quite a few shots on the green that could have been a round changer …. When you fall off that horse you know what you gotta do !! Looking forward to you doing some future tourney videos 👍👍
You can’t give up on it!… it’s so very different when you have a card in your hand and it really matters.. you have to get used to that, you have to enter as many competitions as possible that matter, that’s the only way to get comfortable at it, and that’s the only way to score what you’re capable of.
Why not just try again next year? Why give up? Just try to improve upon your result next year and push for 75 in the qualifier. Take advantage of the years you are physically able to play well, that way you don't look back in a decade or two and wish you had.

Ive listened to that book play to play great like 10 times ...such a good book! Great to listen to driving to the course.
Such a great discussion. I think most casual golfers can relate to this.
He needs to change the series to break 80 honestly
You realistically have to beat the goal consistently first before increasing the goal. That’s like me saying I am going out to beat 90 without ever hitting the range. 😂 Never going to get there.
He never breaks 75.
I don’t think I’ve EVER seen him break 75 haha
If he was serious he would chip instead of putting off the green at times. What was the point of that lesson with Danny!
Rick, golf is hard. You gave it a good go be proud! Love you mate
Rick you inspire me every time when I hear your podcast to keep getting better at golf. Thanks Rick 🙏⛳️
I shot an 81 in state amateur qualifier last week, and I feel the same way, Rick. Weirdly made me feel more invigorated and confident.
I like the internal evaluations you do.
At some level we all relate to you in that.
The style of editing on the video was very refreshing
COURSE YOU ARE. ME ME ME.
You have to document it. All the fans of the channel want to see it.
The qualifying video was entertaining, and relatable Rick - You just couldn't get it going on the front nine but the back nine was solid (we'll ignore the tee shot on 18..)
Gotta go for it again next year mate, you're one of many that didn't get it over the line, but while you're in a position in life to able to have a crack, then you HAVE to take those opportunities. 👍
Playing high level Strokeplay events adds a whole extra level of pressure that club competitions, which are often stableford, simply don’t replicate. Anybody criticising you who hasn’t experienced playing with strangers and strokeplay should put themselves through it and see what it feels like.
Rick the content was unreal! 🙌🏽
Respect for having a crack and being prepared to document it.
But don't milk it now. Two bad shots? We saw it mate. Good luck to you but don't delude yourself.
Great attitude. I hope I can get my game in a place where I can enter.
Somethings wrong with the sound, your voices are a bit squeaky.
Vid sounds like its been sped up a few percent
You should play a few events going into qualifying
I think any golfer with any conviction beats themselves up after a round and has to take time to process it. Match play comps are particularly hard to bear as you can , as in my case this weekend, narrow it down to 2 or 3 shots and a couple of putts that don’t fall. I’m 55 captain of Upavon Golf Club and my game if anything is still getting better. So don’t give up Rick. I’m sure I speak for most of your audience saying we enjoy watching all the TH-camrs take on the Open Qualifying Challenge. There is always next year!
I watched that video great job sir.cheers.
Atomic Habits! You need to read/listen to that book. Goals are great for setting a direction, systems are the way you achieve them
Would've, could've, should've is the trap that most if not all golfers fall into looking backwards to what happened. The challenge is often focusing on the most important shot you have which is your next one. A maddening game. 😅
Love the passion for game
Definitely do it again. PMA is key. Your mind is your worst enemy. Keep that self confidence up even on bad shots and you can win.
Shoots an 81 then says "I have proved I can break 75 at open qualifying ", what an absolute stupid thing to say lol
It so good you have taken so many positives out of your round
I think there is huge gap between tour players and regular pros , as you found out
Yesterday i played the my worst round in 2year … I needed to hear this 🙏
'The score doesn't reflect how well I played' ... erm, it does. It absolutely does.
Absolutely Disagree!!
Love the shirt Guy 🙌
After watching you play I must say, you would be a welcomed addition to LIV golf.
Try again, thank you for recording that round. I know I would fold. I am sure the pressure is insane. Next time try using that Kirkland set 😉
Was the person that messaged you after the round Yellow Hat Guy? 🤣
It would be great to see how you approach getting better.
Good effort Rick
