Man I watched it all and was completely behind you. I think you'll easily get 75 next time. I dunno if was the heat or just nerves but I know you've got it in you man! Take care!
Also only been golfing 18month so not sure if this is a valid comment or not but why is the guy with the yellow hat stood so close and peripheral on pretty much every T shot
Hey Rick tough luck man just very tense atmosphere seemed like it got you too caught up in your thoughts. Do you think having a close friend to caddy you just to try and lighten the mood would have helped loosen you up during your round? I would love to see more competition in your videos I'm rooting for you man. I've been watching your content for about a year and a half since that is about the time I started getting into golf and I really appreciate all the tips and planning of your shots that you show it's helped me really find a comfortable swing for myself just need more practice to get consistency and maybe a lesson or two of how to hit my fairway woods and hybrids cause I chunk or top those all the time.
Rick, in a world of youtubers that only show their hero shots, I really appreciated you showing us the good, bad, and ugly. I feel like a lot of us get discouraged because we are inundated with spectacular shots. Was awesome to see you struggle, honestly. Thank you for bringing us along. My game has greatly improved since I started following you and I'm having more fun than ever. Great day of golf and looking forward to watching you get better and better along with the rest of us!
haha ok. This guy would get his ass kicked by bryson with kids clubs. I litterly just took anything he said about clubs on his channel with a grain of salt. don't act like you know what you are talking about when homie is barely better than I am and I think I suck

You did great, Rick. I played a Senior US Open qualifier here in the US 11 years ago. Broke 80 on two practice rounds, shot 90 for the tournament! I don’t think people realize how much nerves affect you under pressure surrounded by spectators. Only takes four bad holes to kill a round!
Great work Rick. A couple of takeaways - 1. DEFINITELY do this again next year. Despite what most of the goobers on here say, you play some decent golf! AND it is so awesome to watch you compete! 2. Shooting that score, on that course, with that many people around watching is a job well done! I'm a big fan of yours, but also Finchy, Fryer, Carter, and they also had a tough time with the pressure. You guys make teaching/entertainment golf videos for a living, it's fun to watch you compete and try hard, but nobody is GENUINELY expecting you to go out and shoot 64 or anything 😊. And finally 3. THANK YOU for putting these videos out there. Whether you play well or poorly, every Friday there's a new Break 75. It's a testament to your commitment to your fan base as well as your integrity as a golfer. KEEP IT UP!!!!
To be fair carter did well. 1 over I believe he shot? Finchy I was surprised at as he's been posting some good scores in competitive golf of late so I was surprised to see him struggle so much, but guess what it's golf it can happen to anyone at anytime . Great to watch and I too hope they all go for it again next year. Shame about bullard having to withdraw from injury
That's one huge thing that separates the pros that dominate vs the ones that are good but just never win, overcoming all that pressure from all those eyes. The best use it as fuel.
Your the man rick and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Im 34 and have parkinsons disease, ive been a long time fan of your content even before i got sick, golf is what keeps me going, its hard to get out there and give it my all some days, but i always look forward to your content. Your ups and downs inspire me to keep showing up. It took balls to put yourself out there and go for it, balls that most of the haters and trolls couldnt have in a million years dude.
Honestly, I think that was a bloody good effort. That back nine was filled with birdie looks that on another day when they fall you shoot an amazing number. The two big numbers hurt for sure but there’s a lot to be said for not only being nervous because it’s Open Qualifying, but you’re filming it, you had bigger crowds no doubt than others due to your profile and you handled it very well. Saw a skippy, smiling Rick clearly loving that back nine (forget the 18th). I’d go again next year!
It was never that important that you beat yourself with self-imposed tension. Observers could see it clearly. The fear of failure. But you had no need to fear it.
Love that it's such a supportive community - nice one for encouraging, George and Wes'! And they're right, Rick - head up, son - I reckon that sort of event is something to get used to; so go play a few more! Besides, it's great content...
Rick, I am a long time viewer all the way back to your days teaching in Manchester. I seldom comment but today just want to let you know that I really have enjoyed being able to watch your game and career develop. I remember your first time doing open qualifying and it's great to see you doing competitive golf again, even if only briefly. Just feels like a full-circle moment as just a couple months ago I remember doing US Open qualifiers for the first time and I just feel like I've grown up golfing always looking up to you in one way or another, given that I was just a teen when I first started watching you when I was trying to figure out how to fix my slice. Despite how the results have gone do not feel bad about yourself... you shot a very impressive score and showed passion all the way through. You are doing more than most of us ever will and I commend you for not only going out there and trying to qualify but posting it all here for the world to see! I love your content because it's not just highlights, it's real relatable golf and we all have our ups and downs and that's a big facet of life and golf is very similar in that sense. You are a big inspiration in my personal adventures of golf and I'm sure many others would say the same. Also, I think you should try qualifying again next year. Having a year to prep, though don't drain yourself obviously, you can at the very least mentally refine your game in prep for your next time qualifying and having something like this in my opinion is a great way to keep yourself motivated just having something off in the distance to be working towards. Just an idea. Thank you for all you do, keep up the great work.
Rick, as I write this 2.8mil subscribers and almost 300,000 views is an amazing achievement. You have improved a lot of people's golf. Sometimes we just put things on "hold" that's not permanent. Thanks for my late night addiction. 🥂
“My professional playing days are truly over” I felt so sad when I heard those words. DONT give up. You got this and you can do it! We are here to support and watch all at the same time. I would be thrilled to have been watching all this time and watch the journey to success! Keep on working and keep us tuned in!
He has a very successful TH-cam career there’s nothing to be ashamed of and he’s still better than 90% of golfers it’s hard to be pro in golf and there’s many more younger hungrier competitors, Rick is 37 years old if he was gonna make it he would’ve by now
Well done Rick. Loved the candid reflections on pod this morning too. Takes some cojones to take on the challenge, let alone put it on a public platform. Thanks for the work you and your team do
What I like about Rick's approach was that he had no expectations of qualifying..............unlike some who are a little bit overconfident in their own ability shall we say.
@@CountMackula *Bit Not really, I've known a lot of people who don't show bad rounds. But hey, thanks for being negative on positive comment chief. I bet you're fun at parties.
Thank you for sharing! This is real Golf, not one of the glamour shots from youtube that you always see. Light and shadow are right next to each other, as every golfer knows. Takes some guts to show everything unfiltered, I salute you for sharing this experience with us.
Not using a caddy wasn't the best idea IMO. Sometimes you want/need that second opinion. Plus Rick sometimes needs talking off a ledge when he wants to hit those hero shots 🤣
I was going to say something similar. He absolutely has the physical game but you can tell he went to the dark scary place of being in your head after the thinned bunker shot. Feel like a caddy would have been able to help him through it a bit quicker
Agreed. In such a pressure situation you want to keep things as normal as possible. And I’m sure Rick does not shoot many rounds of golf alone anymore. Just having the other person there to talk to keep your mind from going into them bad places. 🤘😎
I agree, In the leadup he mentioned working with James Robinson a lot, he would have been a great choice on the bag imo as Rick seems to be in a good headspace when he plays with him. Hindsight is 50-50 of course, he did what he thought was best on the day and all things considered played very well aside from the two blow up holes, massive respect to him for even putting himself out there like this
James Robinson was qualifying on the same day at a different course. I think he would have considered it otherwise. I do think Rick feels like he has to “apologize” to James when he makes mistakes though
Rick…respect for hanging in there. Your back 9 showed your character by not breaking down after the front 9. Follower since 2017 and will continue to be!
I want to see anyone here who have snarky things to say share their experiences with COMPETATIVE golf. Just like how hitting it great on the range doesn't translate into a real round, playing great when you're having fun with buddies doesn't translate into competition. The entire vibe is just so different, and that's just watching through video. Rick, this is really good stuff. Amazing how even sectional qualifying has such a crowd! I'd be scared stiff with this many people watching.
I haven't read too many snarky comments to be fair, but there are many supportive ones ... but I think you are under-estimating the amount of golfers who play competitions in fairness. Last weeks comp my club, a field that has 71 entrants, and my net +1 was only good enough for 40th. A lot of players and a lot of good scoring. In my 4 years golfing, and currently at 13.7 on the index, I guess I have played 100 competitions, in a variety of formats and at a number of courses, which include Opens / Pro-Ams and Mizuno events in the UK. Rick must have played thousands of comps.
Rick, you are one of us … clearly. And that’s why you get all of that love and support. There are so many golfers in your community that can relate to that. We all play - everyone within his/her capability - in >95% of the time ~3 great holes, ~12 okayish ones and then ~3 are just a desaster. Bringing your full skills consistently on 18 is tough. And your round is just a reflection of that reality. I wish you try again - and I also wish that you would find a Golfclub where you play a few tournaments off the camera - keep it up!! ❤
As someone who’s been considering quitting golf and going through a slump, your determination to keep playing after going through a slump yourself has pushed me to keep playing this beautiful game. Golf is hard! Cheers mate
Hey Rick, just wanted to drop a quick note to say don’t let this round get you down. Even the best have their off days, and it’s all part of the journey. Your skill and dedication are clear, and one tough round doesn’t define you. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward-your next round is just around the corner. We’re all rooting for you! 💪⛳
Rick is one of my favorite golfers. With TH-cam nearing its 20th anniversary, we've witnessed numerous YTGolfers come and go, but Rick's impact is truly remarkable. Each time I watch one of his videos, I feel inspired to pick up a club. His infectious optimism and cheerful spirit serve as a constant reminder that our pursuit of golf isn't just about scoring low; it's about a genuine passion for the game. While every golfer dreams of making it onto the PGA Tour, Rick's ability to bring immense joy to countless golfers through his content, all while thriving as a content creator, represents a level of success that many tour card holders have yet to achieve. Cheers, mate and thanks for the Video!
This was actually one of my favorite videos of you. You make golf look easy and seeing you struggle a bit made me feel better about the struggle and more relatable. I hope this isn’t the end of your competitive career. Would love to see you try again in a year or two.
I love this format of golf spectating tbh. Gives us the chance to analyze your most serious form, see your mistakes, see your successes, etc. It's very pure. I love this video!
Rick how you even swing the club with that many people watching I've got no idea! Hats off to you for embracing it and sharing your journey with complete honesty. Looking forward to the next Open qualifying!
this made me have a ton of respect for you i think its also great to show the guys who are new to golf that sometimes we shoot good and sometimes we dont and that being able to keep playing and not let your emotions get you is important
It’s fun watching TH-cam personalities like Rick make regular content but there’s something special about watching them put their skills on the line and showing them actually competing. For me it’s more personal more relatable. Good luck Rick. love what you do.
I must congratulate you Rick . Not many people would do what you did . They would be afraid that they would tarnish their reputation. You have increased it in my book . You put yourself and your golf game on the line . Yes you didn't perform the way you would've liked but you showed up. You put yourself to the test . You obviously devote all your time to your channel to provide knowlege to novice golfers like myself . Your channel is my favorite. I have no doubt if you play a qualifier again that you will do much better . If you don't I still will be one of your biggest fans and supporters. As they say in your neck of the woods . Well done and cheers .
This was great Rick. Most of us couldn't have held it together to do that well with people watching and knowing Open qualifying was on the line. Good on you for doing it and putting yourself out there. Absolutely go do it again!
Should have kept that 3 iron in the bag. Used it more than driver and only hit 2 fairways with it. Thanks for posting the video. Love watching you play even when things don’t go the way you want(we can all relate to that).
This was one of the best videos you've done. I found it incredibly relaxing, great shots, great camera work. It really have an insight into what playing with people is really like. The angles you see on TV don't give the same experience. Great work, more like this!
One of my favourite Rick videos. The balls to put out a video like this. Increased respect for the man who can play golf better than 75% of us I’m sure. Keep em coming Rick.
Your relatability to the everyday golfer is so admirable even though you are anything but an everyday golfer....keep shining Rick and inspiring us all to play the game.
Hey Rick! As a 3rd year golfer, I can’t imagine playing under that kind of pressure of tournament/qualifying golf. Super inspiring, hope I get the chance to play as good as you one day when the heat is on. Appreciate you sharing the content of trying to break 75 at open qualifying.
Yep and it's one thing to play with your mates and quite another to play at a regional qualifying tournament for The Open with a crowd watching. Thanks for taking us on the ride :)
Come on he knew what his intentions where before he even played the round, it was all about his you tube channel and nothing todo with him playing in the open
Most of us shank our shot when the group behind is watching us tee off because of the nerves… good on you Rick for giving it a go. Not the result you wanted but take the positives from it and really a respectable back 9 until 18. Golf is hard
Proud of you, Rick. You’re the most successful TH-camr for a reason. So many commenters second-guess everything Rick does but yet they keep showing up here to watch.
You should definitely give it a go again next year!! But start preparing very early... I would love to see a whole "Open Qualifying" series with your preparation and improvement over the following year!!
Really appreciate all the effort that went into this! You’ve inspired my mate and I to put in the extra bit of effort to get our handicaps low enough to play in US Open qualifying. Keep up the great work, you’re inspiring the next generation of golfers!
Bravo Rick! Your humility belies the courage it took to step up and compete. Makes my 103 yesterday feel a little bit better! From across the Pond I'll be rooting for you to try again!
I am so glad you posted this Rick. I was afraid I wasn't going to get to see your round, been looking forward to it for a while now. You did great! Way to show how much you put into it! And staying positive. So much improvement, both personally and in your game. Well done
Yellow hat with the early arm raises and trying to force you into a worse situation on 4 is the opposite of a friend of the channel. Such great golf sandwiched between then and 18!
Thanks very much for coming down to my course Longley Park on Sunday and thanks for your support and sponsorship of our Junior Open, unfortunately I couldn't get along but I know your involvement is very much appreciated by all connected to our club.
It’s interesting to see how some are saying he did this only for the clicks and the views. No doubt he will get them. But a video like this hardly fits the standard brief flashy clickable format that youtube tends to reward.
Commiserations Rick - I think you've physically got what it takes to qualify for the Open. 💪 It might be worthwhile hiring a sports psychologist to help you with preventing disaster holes snowballing over to the rest of your game? Great video though, love the fact that you concentrated on your own game rather than entertaining us with your commentary. Good luck in your future endeavours! 🍀
You were one of the first golf guys I discovered on social media and love your content, Rick. Thanks for sharing this. Some questions/comments: 1. What was the most challenging part of this round? The spectators? The "tournament" vibe? The course conditions? 2. My perspective as a watcher is limited by the video and never playing this course, but it didn't seem (emphasis on "seem") like an especially difficult course for ball strikers. What would you attribute your mistakes to? Simple mishits, nerves, or something else? 3. What led to your decision to tee off on 18 with an iron and not a driver? Your driver had been right a lot of the day and it seems you could've targeted a line that would've set you up nice for a nice approach with your 2nd shot. As always, I love watching your real, honest content and for amateur golfers like myself, relatable. Keep going...you have the game for it!
Same here, spoiled that tee shot.... all good though, Rick would have had an amazing round if it wasnt for that damn triple. Surely that got to his head, I know it would have mine
We watch you review drivers regularly Rick and you NEVER hit massive slices like a couple of those on there. It has to be on course nerves. Like someone else said, maybe a sports psychologist wouldn't be a waste of time ?
It was a pleasure following your round and cheering you on... You've got such a friendly, approachable, and positive attitude it's hard NOT to root for your success!!
@beniteztheconman just a suggestion but why don't you spend your free time watching content that you actually enjoy? By the way there are a handful of tour pros that post 81s or worse from time to time and they also have the best coaches and equipment in the world so yes it definitely could have been worse.
Solid effort Rick, ... if I could offer anything - it would be... you need to find a George Bryan "go 2 club", ie: 3 wood or similar off the tee... hitting 3 iron from the tee only to find the fairway a couple of times from about 10 attempts from the tee killed your round and your ability to recover the round... Surely grinding with a favorite club until you have something with a low dispersion pattern has to be better than a 3 iron leaving you so far back and in less than ideal lie's...! Hitting some fairways would have bred some confidence in your game which could have translated on the score card. Really hard to birdie when you are always on the backfoot after the tee shot.
I agree, even Justin Rose said to him that tour players aren’t laying up anymore. If you are going to end up in trouble better to be 60 yards closer and in trouble. Hitting less than driver off the tee isn’t worth it.
Hated the results but appreciate your willingness to give it a go and document it for us to see. Enjoy your content and appreciate everything you do for the golf community. Looking forward to your future videos.
When you are getting frustrated, thinking negatively, or thinking about way too much I like to look up a few dad jokes. It will help you laugh and kind of relax. My golf coach growing up got me doing it and it works. Here is my favorite one “How does a penguin build its house……. Igloos it together.” Always makes me laugh.
Rick I have so much admiration for you. Its very brave of you and I think shows what a top human being you are. It doesn't detract from the fact you are very talented but shows everyone who goes to play and gets frustrated that it can happen to anybody and that's why it's such an amazing but frustrating game
The video gave me chills with all the raw energy and sounds of that golf course on display. It almost felt like I was walking that round with you at times. Great attempt at qualifying Rick.
Consumers assume that since Rick does equipment review videos that he plays like a pro, but in reality his game is about the same as a 5 handicap index at your local club. I applaud him for having the courage to display his game and scores, which most You Tube reviewers do not have the courage to do.
Rick, I know this comment probably wont get read. But in case it does I still wanted to give my support. I am a new golfer, just now getting into the sport and you are the first golfing YT channel I subscribed to. Your energy, explanations, and true care for the sport is the reason why. Not many people can show their failures along with their wins. This video alone has made me excited to play a sport I never thought I'd be into. Thank you.
You are a champion in my book. Posting this took real bravery. It’s fun to watch folks poke the ball 300 yards and drop 40 foot putts. I know I will never be able to do that, well 40 foot putts I could get lucky. But you posting this human round that every golfer has with warts and all was truly brave.
Having watched all the videos in the run up to this, it suddenly looked very real on the first tee! A decent crowd watching, expectation, nerves - absolute respect to you for putting yourself in that position. I was feeling nervous for you and I wasn't even there! Well done.
Rick…..it is ALWAYS a joy watching your channel regardless of the content for the day. I know you are disappointed and I would be too if I were you. You have so much potential. I get excited when I break 100…..and I’ve been playing longer than you’ve been alive. I had a period in my 40s and 50s when I played fairly well (80’s) but I only broke 80 twice with 79s. I’m in my 70s now and just don’t give a damn what I shoot. I go to the golf course for giggles and love to play with my equally bad old goat buddies. It’s a great game and you have contributed to it in more ways than you can count. Looking forward to the next video.
Playing in my 9th year on an am tour I appreciate you putting it on the line. Golf is hard but harder playing in tournaments for everyone to see. Thanks for you honesty and class.
With all due respect, this is to all of the fanboys saying Rick is a scratch golfer and will destroy grant horvat in stroke play. Honestly I would be ecstatic if I shot 81 on a course like this. I think you did great buddy and I think you will only improve after this experience. Next time take a caddy to help you work out some of the problems you face during your round, it’s not all about “I want to make my own decisions and take all of the responsibility.” It’s nice to have someone there to bounce ideas off of or have the conformation on a shot or read. If golf was easy we’d all be on tv in the final pairing on Sundays, you did good laddie
I feel so much better about my own golf having watched this. No doubt you would kick my arse but so refreshing to see a pro show the brutality of this game we love, warts and all. Puts my very average game into perspective. Thanks Rick
I’m new to golf. But I freaking love this video. It showcases how difficult golf can be both technically and emotionally. I love the content! Keep up the hard work and give it a proper go again next year! Cheer mate.
It's clear that even experienced golfers find the game extremely challenging. You missed a few shots that would have frustrated me, but as an 8 handicapper, you've helped me see things differently. I won't let myself get upset on the golf course anymore.
Thank for stepping up and posting this. Takes balls to man up and take the hits. I was so nervous watching this, felt I was there with you. Thanks again...
This is such a good video. The raw, silent emotion of how difficult the game can be. So many people offering advice you don't need. Sometimes you just don't score as well as your potential. Don't give up - Best of luck with your next attempt.
From somebody with a 13 handicap and a very bad temper there is so much to take away and learn from this! Your character and attitude towards the game is exemplary, which in turn makes you such a popular figure and also a great golfer. I would have lost my rag after that triple and you kept at it and produced some awesome golf on the back 9. Huge kudos to you
Thanks for sharing this Rick, and please know that your gift to the world of golfers is so special. You make all of us better golfers and people with every video you make.
Great job Rick! Proud of you for putting it out there, showing us the good with the bad, really proud of how you settled down for an excellent back 9. Let's forget about the 18th and just appreciate that you settled in and played some great golf. Would love to see more!
Almost certainly better than 99.9% of any of us watching would have done. Love the series and hope you will do it again, would love to see it from the start with a caddy and you both learn your game working towards qualifying
I have been watching you for a while, but it's the first time posting a comment. After the first 2 holes you pared I had hoped for you, but that fourth hole was a killer. Any of us watching your channel know how hard it is for you to clear your mind when things turn sour. We heard great names you played against talking to you about this. I was surprised that you chose not to have a caddy, either James Robinson or Guy would have been helpful. They know you well and I am sure you trust them to get your focus back. Anyhow, that was interesting to watch (I never have and never will be able to play at such an event. Great back 9(8), some putts were so close to give you birdies that would have surely pumped you up.
It really shows just how good Professional golfers are to youtubers. there simply is no comparison to the next level skills of the pro. That said, kudos to Rick for putting himself out there and making the effort. The experience alone was worth the effort.
Just watched this. I was 100% routing for you Rick. Nerves are a funny thing. Managing them is probably more difficult that the game itself. You could tell the nerves were a massive factor in your game. You know your golf is better than that score, and so does everyone who watches your channel mate. Really felt for you there. But your channel os the best around so nevermind. Keep up the amazing work you do Rick 👍🏼
Great video. Really shows the behind the scenes atmosphere of qualifying. Like you mention, the ppl watching and being so close by. You should definitely try again..!

Fyi you show your score on the 18th before you play the 18th in your video… You take away the 4th and 18th it wasn’t bad golf. I say try again.
Also only been golfing 18month so not sure if this is a valid comment or not but why is the guy with the yellow hat stood so close and peripheral on pretty much every T shot
Hey Rick tough luck man just very tense atmosphere seemed like it got you too caught up in your thoughts.
Got to keep trying. Got the ability
It was never that important that you beat yourself with self-imposed tension. Observers could see it clearly. The fear of failure. But you had no need to fear it.
Freakin loved you entering!! Really really cool. Head up and let’s keep getting better! 🤙🏼

@mikesmith1485 what are you, the freakin word police? grow up
Rick, I am a long time viewer all the way back to your days teaching in Manchester.
Hindsight is 50-50 of course, he did what he thought was best on the day and all things considered played very well aside from the two blow up holes, massive respect to him for even putting himself out there like this
May have been a situation where he only had the option of 1 person walking the course with him and he chose a cameraman. Just a thought and I do agree
At least most of the AM golfers arent trying out for an Open qualifier pretending they have any serious golf game
As someone who’s been considering quitting golf and going through a slump, your determination to keep playing after going through a slump yourself has pushed me to keep playing this beautiful game. Golf is hard! Cheers mate

You were one of the first golf guys I discovered on social media and love your content, Rick. Thanks for sharing this. Some questions/comments:

Thanks for posting this Rick. It shows the difference of playing for fun, and playing under pressure.
Exactly, if he played from the fairway on those 7 shots he would have shot a good score. 😊
I agree, even Justin Rose said to him that tour players aren’t laying up anymore. If you are going to end up in trouble better to be 60 yards closer and in trouble. Hitting less than driver off the tee isn’t worth it.

Great effort Rick. You hit some great golf shots, it’s not easy playing in front of a crowd at a difficult course. Very fun video to watch.
