Having driven nothing but Ridgelines since 2005 (called a 2006 model) in my timber business, I was not at all surprised it scrambled up that hill. They are far more capable than most believe.
How are they with ground clearance? My Tacoma was just totaled and am looking for an alternative. The honda drivetrain claims similar durability/longevity. I've definitely made contact with the skid plates on the taco with the rutted trails I've had to drive. Worried the independent suspension and lack of skid plates could leave me stranded. Thanks in advance if you have the time to share your experience.

@@noahpowers1513 I'm thinking of getting a new Ridgeline, and thinking about a lift once purchasing, but my concern is how that affects the warranty and the long term effects on Honda's engineering. The pictures I've seen of lifted Ridgelines look great, but I wonder how they'll hold up 5-10 years afterward.
I have a 17 and it's an excellent truck for my uses. It tows my 4K travel trailer with ease, carries 4 large adults, gets great around town and highway fuel economy (not towing) of 21 and 29 mpg. The faster you go, the better the fuel economy. Living in New England, it's awesome in the snow. Easy to park, extremely reliable, fun to drive and looks great. Perfect for my use.
I've had one about 3 weeks, I love it. This weekend I took at a trip to my parents and averaged 27.2 MPG. I was wondering how that would go because, going out there, it's a 3000 foot elevation change over 70 miles (4000' at my house, they live in the high desert at 7000'). Mileage going out was 23. Back at my house, it was 27.2 MPG for the whole round-trip (average 72 MPH). I think this speaks well for the Ridgeline.
If Honda doesn't use this review, they're idiots. You approached this "truck" exactly like most of us would as an underwhelming contender in the segment...and I guarantee that extended off-road excursion changed a lot of minds. "Pleasantly surprised" perfectly personifies your review. Thx Sarah!

It made the hill because the Ridgeline has true torque vectoring. The torque vectoring also make the truck fun to drive on the road and handles very well when thrown in to turns.
I got a 2023 two weeks ago. I was also surprised at the hills that it would go up when I was out in the desert. So far I'm real happy. It did well in the desert and on the interstate to get there. The interstate has a speed limit of 80 MPH, I ran with the cruise control on 85 MPH most of the time, and got it up to 95 on a couple of short stretches just to see how the truck felt (it was rock-solid). Great commute truck and for my brand of light off-roading.
@@richardlapoint1845 I see them all the time in the Rockies, it certainly isn't a rock crawler, but it's also more comfortable to drive than a rock crawler.
@@richardlapoint1845 strangely enough, I live in WV. I have a Ridgeline and no its not as capable as the Tacoma or Colorado off road versions. The new Frontier is nice as well. The Ridgeline excels in ride, usable power, and it really does well on anything that isn't requiring a locking diff. It is better in the snow than the Tacoma and Colorado (I've owned all three)
I have a 2017 ridgeline I bought a couple years a go, I love it. Everything the 2021 has mine has. It is very comfortable, great mpg. Good power. The trunk, the tailgate. Great truck. That's right a truck.
I picked up the Ford Ranger in 2019 and love it! Coming from my 2003 F150 Supercrew FX4 that I had since new I would love to have the bunk (bed trunk). Love the truck but need more storage space! Kinda like the tailgate idea also.
AND, her review is not full of a bunch of salesman BS that gets everybody running for the exits. Plain English that is relatable and actual tests, that's the way to go, not a bunch of doubletalk, crap, and gimmicks.
This is the best vehicle review I've seen. It covers all the aesthetic, mechanical, unique features, and performance characteristics at an appropriate level, while not wasting time on unnecessary stuff or information that's available from the manufacturer's site -- while being engaging, entertaining, and enjoyable. Making what might normally be a mundane review about a pickup truck with this high level of production value is a major accomplishment. Combine that with the revelation that Honda broke the mold for the vehicle segment in a way that brings important improvements to the typical body-on-frame approach, this presentation provides a 1-2 knockout punch for anyone looking to buy in this market -- very impressive! Should be the model for all reviews -- not just vehicles.
I have yet to see anyone anywhere on any review show a bone-stock Ridgeline's capability than the hill climb at about 16 minutes in. Wow. Sarah gets full credit for knowing exactly how to take a line and keep momentum going in the right places ... well done, and this video is literally helping Honda make at least one Ridgeline sale :-)
This is seriously the best Ridgeline review I've seen yet. A couple months ago I replaced my 2020 F150 5.0 supercrew 4wd with a '23 Ridgeline RTL. I downsized because I was tired of daily driving a school bus riddled with QC issues just so I could tow my 3,000lb boat/motor/trailer on weekends during the summer... I was also pretty done with the lack of quality from the big three overall, so I decided to try my first Asian. The Ridgeline tows great, it's damn stable, has no issues with slimy wet boat ramps, and it's hella comfy for long tows. Loving it so far.
You made a key comment there. I bought a 94 GMC 1500 Sierra, thinking I'd like an old truck, but boy was I wrong. The damn thing actually steers better with the tilt wheel tilted full up, like driving a bus. The truck is in perfect condition and going to the Goodguys car show in Columbus this summer to sell it off. The Ridgeline makes the GMC feel like crap.
Thank you for this review. And thank you for saying what this truck is. Not everyone is hauling a 40ft gooseneck camper up a mountain. People are quick to say "that's not a truck because it's unibody" . The truth is it's the truck most people will use on a daily basis.
I love the way you do your car reviews, Sarah - Especially that you are not shy to do proper off-road tests makes your tests so much better than other (maybe more famous) you-tubers who only ever drive their test cars on the road. The part when you put them on the lift to show the "underbelly" is just awesome too and put your tests even further ahead. - But the number one thing that no-one can beat, is your winning personality. You are top notch Sarah!
Really happy to see this review. I’m kind of a Honda person. What can I say… I’m on my fourth one. All have lasted well over 300,000 miles with regular service. Low cost, dependable, fun, pretty easy to work on.
@@MonicaHolly143 custom trailboss is 51k msrp and lt trailboss is 57k. And yes you can get a trailboss lt for 55k if you know how to deal. Honda doesn't budge much on their trucks. More room with trailboss. F150 is a bit cheaper
I'm really glad you reviewed the new Ridgeline, it just keeps getting better and better. It is a niche vehicle, you can't really call it a car or a truck in the traditional sense. BTW, it's front wheel drive until it senses slip, and then transfers power appropriately. I've owned a 2008 for about eight years now, it's been super reliable, very comfortable to drive, and has proven itself many times over. When they first came out I thought they were really weird, but after owning one for some time now it's a great vehicle. A lot of thought and innovations went into it, things that domestic manufacturers should take note of.
The 2nd Gen i-VTM4 is a “high load” system that transfers power before there is slip. In fact, it transfers power to the rear more often than not. It is mechanically identical to SH-AWD, but is programmed for maximum traction and stability vs maximum handling. It’s really a great system, and quite a bit different from the 1st Gen VTM-4 system.
I bought a 2023 a week ago. Whenever I show anybody the tailgate that you can drop or swing, and then show them the in-bed trunk, they're like "DAMN!! That is cool!!" Not just cool, it has actual utility. I've already found out how nice it is to not have to fight with wheel-wells when putting something wide in the back.
@@johnkbear3901 The trunk is actually weather sealed. I think it was The Straight Pipes who put a bunch of clothes in the trunk and went through a car wash - everything came out perfectly dry.
My brother always said that the wagon was the 1960s-1970s version of the modern SUV. There is a ton of reasons to appreciate the ridgelilne as long as you accept it for what it is. My brother was also the one that used to lock me in the little trunk portion of our family wagon similar to the one in that Ridgeline bed. (Stares in to space reflecting on being the middle child...). Great video again; content, production quality, technical and practical proficiency. Right on.
I have toyo AT3 tires on my ridgeline 100% of the time. Absolutely destroys on road trips thru snowy roads to ski resorts. I can maneuver/pass people while in complete control, AWD drifting in sand mode is a blast, and the trunk size wows other truck owners every time.
"You can't do real off road with a Ridgeline" Yea, OK. Really happy to see reviewers showing what these are capable of. Honestly, I can't understand why they aren't more popular. I love my 2019 sport. Near perfection for my use.
The only thing this truck can’t do over a half ton is towing more and carrying more weight in the bed. In return you get a more comfortable ride and better mpg. It can do everything else and that’s all most truck people need.
Sarah, the understeer may have been a matter of not enough "beans." If you stay in the throttle, the AWD system actually overdrives the outside wheels in a curve to minimize understeer. If you had alternating understeer/oversteer, you were probably right on the edge of triggering that feature.
I recently found out that GM is being sued for their 5.3 V8 truck engine. It is using way too much oil. I am now considering trucks like this one instead. Honda has a great record for dependability and quality that is worth the extra money. So thank you for the impartial and honest review.
I had a Ridgeline Black Edition - first year they had this body style. I loved that truck - but needed a bit more space so went to something larger. But the Ridgeline has a lot of great features! I miss the in-bed trunk more than anything!
I got a 2023 Black Edition last week and I love it. Whenever I show anybody the in-bed trunk they're like, "That is awesome!" That's where I put my desert gear.
I didnt get the idea of these trucks until I talked to a friend. If you live in the suburb, dont actually tow anything of significance, these are the vehicles for you. Probably do well with the over-landing crowd that dont really go offroad anywhere, but like fire roads and gravel trails. Honda made the Del Sol years ago, a FWD "sports car". This is essentially that idea in truck form.
@@SarahnTuned I have a 2019 RTL-E and use it as a "work truck" and daily driver...wifey has a Yukon XL that we consider our "HD" for the family hauler and when we need to haul the boat. Its a perfect family combo.
First, you did a terrific job reviewing the Ridgeline. I have a 2017 now and had a 2007. I was a little confused with your rating system as you really liked the truck but it didn't rate that well otherwise. Sometimes I wish it had more towing capacity, but otherwise it does haul a lot for a smaller truck (one of the best payload capacities in its class). My complaints are that the rear doors don't open wide enough on the 2017 and that the tailgate/door does not lock with the rest of the truck. Both of these issues can be fairly easily remedied.
It's literally what MOST truck owners would ever need. People argue over this being "a truck" or not - when Honda themselves came out and said this is NOT a truck designed for truck people, it's the comfort of an SUV with the utility of a pick up....Plus, That locking trunk?! GENIUS!
@@mikenormandy9250 my big argument is that it's a midsized truck with a full size price tag. That's why these aren't more popular, my 1500 high country was $50k the Ridgeline black edition is $48k they got to lower that gap if they want to appeal to more prospective buyers.
Awesome you did a review on this, I just bought a 2021 RTL and I love it. You're totally right about it being its own thing and not competing with other trucks. It's like a Swiss army knife of vehicles 👍
Ive had my HPD for 2 and a half months and I love it! I just wish the “hpd package” actually gave it some off-road upgrades instead of just the bed decal and bronze wheels :/ this is by far the best review I’ve seen! Thanks for reviewing the ridgeline and putting it to the test!(:

It is fantastic in the snow. I trailer Snowmobiles throughout the Adirondack Mountains in Northern NY all winter..no problems whatsoever. The only tiny issue I have is slight rubbing against the wheel well when I turn completely to one side and it only happens in reverse.
@@trentatkinson7620 I had a bit of a scare this weekend. I was at Blackfoot Reservoir in Idaho and I wanted to stop and hike with my daughter a bit. There was a turnoff from the main road that dropped into a camping spot with a firepit. It was dry and sunny, didn't think too much about it. While we were hiking, a freak rainstorm came up and it rained hard for about 15 minutes. Back at the truck, what was no big deal before was now a steep, rutted, and very muddy mess and I was like, "Damn, can we get out of here?" I put the Ridgeline in mud mode and climbed up and out of it without really a problem. If we were in my wife's RAV4, we would've been screwed.
That's funny I was just thinking about how much I used to like the Element, and I actually don't like brown or yellow cars but in root beer it looked just right!( I usually prefer white cars but the Element in white looks horrible!!!) Wow Sarah what an amazing review of the ridge line. You really looked like you were having fun with this one and I now have a new found respect for that truck. I too thought it was just a van with a bed.Your description of what Honda was going for I feel was spot on!! Thank you for all your hard work and I wish I could give the video two thumbs up!!

I love my 2017 Ridgeline and I just ordered a 2021 replacement that is coming with those bronze wheels. They are growing on me. It’s perfect for my needs.
Ford came out with that Magic Tailgate back in 1965. The Ridgeline takes care of about 90% of your truck needs. However, every now and then I need to tow a car. Fabulous car and fabulous review. Thanks!!
I think it was car&driver that did a review back in 17 about towing a classic mustang across the country with the Ridgeline. They gave it absolute rave reviews for how it handled it.
Thank you, Sarah. I've often wondered about real changes that Honda has made to the Ridgeline over the years. Mine is a 2006 and lacks most of the electronic wizardry. I bought it in a rush to replace my F150 which was totaled by a nasty weather event. After 15 years and tons of snow seasoned with tons of salt, the Ridge has proven to be the most reliable truck that I have owned. Now that I am old, I expect that this is the last truck for me. I've done routine maintenance and the A/C needed a recharge last year. That's it. It always starts and it's still comfortable on the road. That's really what trucks are about. I have no interest in replacing it. Now, I will go out and give it the beans... again.
Nice review Sarah! I owned a 2013 Ridgeline Sport (same V6 @ 250 BHP and 5 speed auto) and loved that truck. It was the best riding truck I've every driven too. Great vehicle.
Honda does not need to apologize for their ridgeline trucks, it's powerful, put well together, fine craftsmanship and fuel efficent. It needs to hold on to the v6 (No 4 cylinder!) and needs a panoramic sunroof to the most complete mid size truck ever!
Had not even considered a Ridgeline until watching this. Was looking at Tacoma mainly for light duty Truck chores. Well done and a fun review to watch too.
Congrats for not falling into the stupid debate about whether it is or isn't a truck most reviewers fall prey to. It's advantages all stem from it not being a traditional truck. It's more than enough of what a truck needs to be to meet most people's needs, but at $40k its a bit pricey. It will be really interesting to see how the new 2021 Ford Maverick stacks up against the Ridgeline given both are not traditional trucks. And the Maverick should be less expensive. I look forward to that review.
2008 Ridge, 118,000 miles. Hard miles on gravel and dirt roads. Pulls flatbed and van trailers. I use as a work truck. But it also has been across US, highway cruiser. No one notices that this is a 3/4 ton truck. Not so little.
This trucklet might be my next vehicle in 4-5 years. It fits that spot in the middle between not enough capability and overkill for my hauling needs and towing a 2000 pound boat (approximate total package weight) 7 miles each way to the lake. Love my Ram but if this has a much better ride and handling I think it would be a way better option while still doing mild truck stuff. The more wore out my body gets the more I appreciate a smooth ride.

People argue over this being "a truck" or not - when Honda themselves came out and said this is NOT a truck designed for truck people, it's the comfort of an SUV with the utility of a pick up....Plus, That locking trunk?! GENIUS! - Wish my Tacoma had that! My Father's Ridgeline is MORE than what most would need. Anyone saying this is NOT a truck, What can't this do that the Tacoma SR5, Frontier, Ranger, etc CAN do....
I just recently got interested in the Ridgeline after having had only a 2wd truck for the past 4 years. I don’t need to tow more than the 5k this vehicle is rated for and seeing it perform like it did in the hill in this video really pushes the idea this might be a better choice for what I need.
Grasshopper you never doubt the power of a Honda. I have been a Honda nut for decades and I am always watching everyone else struggling while I just keep going in my Honda.
You can slide rifles easily under the back seat and leave it down. I've had tons of passengers in the backseat and they've never known but they're sitting on top of a couple rifles in my 2018
You forgot to mention in the trunk is a plug so you can fill it with ice and use for tailgating. They really went for it with this one. I wish it competed with the maverick and incoming stout for price. I would also love a hybrid option. I have a small garden design business rss. I need the bed to put trees and equipment in the back. I don’t need a hog that can tow 10,000 lbs.
I’m thinking about a Ridgeline, and watching all the videos. I really thought this one was click-bait, but it was one of the more informative videos I’ve seen on the Ridgeline.
It's not a truck or SUV. It's a ute. With AWD, a trunk, and a 5000lb towing capacity. It needs skids, rockers, bumpers, locking diffs in the rear and center, and a front winchmount, not to mention a LOT more clearance, for serious offroading, but it looks solid for getting a few waverunners, dirtbikes, ATVs, or snowmobiles up a slick incline. It's great that these are available with sunroofs and roofrails too. Some owners are reporting almost 30MPG hwy, and the 26' cruising boat I want to get is only 3000lb on the trailer. Something like this would probably do nicely for me if I don't want to abuse my vehicle with rockcrawling or mudding.
Great review, Sarah. After seeing your review, it's apparent that the Ridgeline is way better than I expected. You've also coined a new term that will come to be known as a Sarah-ism! "Plood." Keep up the great work.
15:00 see you have much more self-control than I do. I would have hit that hill at 70+ and tried to jump it And this is why manufacturers don't give me cars to drive.
It’s actually a lot of maths and science involved I’ve noticed to successfully tackle obstacles in factory tuned vehicles. I find off-roading an unmodified vehicle to be a lot more fun because the feeling of success is incredible when your odds are against you.
Definitely changed my opinion on them. The redesign made a huge difference in the looks department. Still looks like an SUV with a Ute conversion but I don’t think it’s a horrible thing. Great review!
It changed my mind too, I genuinely enjoyed my time with this thing. I think its enough truck for 90% of people who own trucks. Most never even see off-road or tow anything. I think with a lift and better tires, it would be fairly capable off-road for a skilled driver.
@@SarahnTuned other than I tow too much for it, my biggest gripe with the Ridgeline, is where the spare tire is. I use my Ram as a truck, and if my bed is loaded with a 1000 Lbs dirt or whatever, what do you do with it if you get a flat? Unload it on the road? That just doesn't make sense to me.
@@jasonfalk7696 MOST people that buy a Ridgeline very likely aren't hauling half a ton of "dirt or whatever". This vehicle is definitely more of a "niche market" kind of thing, and stakes no claims in keeping up with the (very extra) gauntlet of half-ton trucks. Like Sarah said, it's more along the lines of a UTE, and I think that really is an appropriate way to describe it; the Ridgeline is not a "truck", in the true sense of the word, but closer to a car or an SUV, and should therefore be looked at as such. So, let's say you want a body-on-frame American pickup that you can beat on for decades? Then buy one! Got a 25' cabin cruiser you need to tow from Bangor to Roanoke? Might want to look at big blocks and diesels! Or, perhaps you are more into something car-like that is just capable enough where it can bring a refrigerator home from Lowes's? Then it could very well be that the Ridgeline has your back! Just remember: there's a tool for every job, but not every tool has a job :)
@@jasonfalk7696 Just pay to have stuff like that delivered rather than ruin your vehicle using it as a dump truck. 🤷🏻♀️ I have had dirt, rocks, sand all kinds of stuff delivered and unloaded at my house and it was never expensive plus a massive time saver not dealing with it.
I had a gen 1 Ridgeline and still think very fondly of it. Easily the best, most thoughtfully-designed vehicle I've ever been in. I think Honda dropped the ball not keeping much of the handy storage that was spread around the cabin of the 2006-2014 models. I wish I'd kept it and I'm doing a bad job of trying to convince myself not to invest in another gen 1.
The hill reaction - hah! That was great. I’m impressed. I have a RAM Rebel and was embarrassed at how quickly it got stuck on a gravel driveway. Locked in the rear axle and it still just sat there and spun. Had to use full on 4-wheel drive. On a gravel driveway.
I have to say, I've never gave much thought to the Ridgeline. The whole it's not a truck argument, may have something to do with that. I'm rather impressed with it in this review. Thanks, Sarah!

I have a 2017 ridgeline I bought a couple years a go, I love it. Everything the 2021 has mine has. It is very comfortable, great mpg. Good power. The trunk, the tailgate. Great truck. That's right a truck.

That hidden trunk and pivoting tailgate are quite ingenious.
Ford/Mercury had the pivoting tailgate back in the late 60s.

I feel exactly the same! Nice summary.
Glad you got around to reviewing the Ridgeline. Especially enjoyed the time you spent under it. No other reviews did that. Thank you Sarah!

2021 70% rear
I bought a 2023 a week ago. Whenever I show anybody the tailgate that you can drop or swing, and then show them the in-bed trunk, they're like "DAMN!! That is cool!!" Not just cool, it has actual utility. I've already found out how nice it is to not have to fight with wheel-wells when putting something wide in the back.
The trunk actually has a drain plug, so you can fill it with ice and cans/bottles of your favorite liquid refreshments. Then just drain the water.
Drink holes are probably there to let the water out that leaked in. No way that compartment is staying clean and dry.

"You can't do real off road with a Ridgeline"
Yea, OK.

This is the best review I’ve seen of the Honda Ridgeline. 👍🏻

As others have said, the best review of the Ridgeline I've seen online. Well done and glad you had a blast with the truck!
I just bought a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. It’s a nifty truck. It replaced my 2004 Ford Ranger that had 238,000 miles.
Not bad for a Ford ranger…impressive!

I really like these trucks. In reality, all I'll ever need as a home owner/diy'er.
It's literally what MOST truck owners would ever need. People argue over this being "a truck" or not - when Honda themselves came out and said this is NOT a truck designed for truck people, it's the comfort of an SUV with the utility of a pick up....Plus, That locking trunk?! GENIUS!

I had a bit of a scare this weekend.

Excellent review. Ridgeline Hybrid will be the perfect Commuter/Homeowner Truck. Thank you Sarah.
I’m impressed, the way it took the hill !
I love the Ridgeline and have wanted one since the 2nd get came out- so I've seen alllllll the reviews on YT, and this is by far the best.
Love my 21 Ridgeline. It's the best of both worlds. Plus upgrading the audio and adding subs under the rear seat just puts finishing touches on it.
Thanks Sarah for doing stuff in this truck that I likely will never try. Glad to know it's possible!

I’m thinking about a Ridgeline, and watching all the videos. I really thought this one was click-bait, but it was one of the more informative videos I’ve seen on the Ridgeline.
I love the subconscious Penguin Wings when you announce the Penguin score. :)

A lot of people don't know. But it's the roomiest midsized truck on the market and the best diving experience.
@@SarahnTuned 🥴😂 it's a waste of time putting a lift on that thing

I had a gen 1 Ridgeline and still think very fondly of it. Easily the best, most thoughtfully-designed vehicle I've ever been in.
