Honda Issue Uncovered! Cant access in-bed Trunk / Spare tire - Watch my repair method

- Please watch the second follow up video as I have uncovered additional info on why it failed.
I experienced my trunk bed fail to open on my 2018 Honda ridgleline with 48,000 miles. In this video I show you the issue at hand, How I went about resolving it and how you can prevent this from happening to you in the future. Regardless of what year 2nd gen ridgeline you have I highly recommend you do this fix ASAP!
If this fails and you need to access your spare tire or if you have an emergency kit stored in the trunk and cannot access your bed trunk this would be a major issue.
I have already confirmed with other Honda Ridgeline owners that this electrical tape installation is what Honda is using. I have seen other vehicles experiencing the beginnings of this electrical tape separation issue.

I just bought a 2023 RTL-E and the cable had 2 yellow pieces of tape. I zip tied it and feel much better. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Easy fix in just a few minutes.
Thank you for posting this. Mine hasn't moved yet so I zip-tied it. It took me less than 5 minutes to fix it and over 10 minutes to find my zip tie bag.
🤣
I took a look and had the same issue! That yellow tape shifted and the cable freely moved in the clamp. Thank you for posting this! I really appreciate being able to address the problem before it is a real problem!!
I own a 2017 RT Ridge. No problems whatsoever with that mechanism, but that was one hell of a video. Good heads up. Thanks so much!
What did he have in trunk
Wow! You had alot of perseverance to get that figured out. Hopefully Honda will address the issue.
WOW!, could you imagine you're on the side of a highway (in the desert), middle of nowhere, you have a flat tire!!!
Massive props for being so in-depth
Checked my truck. The right yellow electrical tape had moved away (further right) from the black cable holder. I moved the cable toward the right and moved the right electrical back against the cable holder, and installed two nylon cable ties against the cable holder on each side. I have a nylon cable gun, that will tighten and cut the excess when it reaches a set tightening. Thanks so much for the great info
What??
I checked my Gen 1 2008 Ridgeline and it has white tape vs. yellow. The right tape also had slid. I used a zip tie and placed a dab of glue to hold in place. Checked the trunk and it worked fine. Thanks
Just picked up a new Ridgeline and will take a look at this asap. Ridiculous that Honda skimped out and didn't secure the cable properly. Amazing video. Thank you.
Hi Yurly,
Thank you for your post. This morning I made a cover for the in trunk release and zip tied the cable.
Again thank you for your genius and taking the time to figure this out.
Keep up the good work.
Mike
Thank you for anticipating your viewers curiosity relative to the tools used in your video. I was hoping that opening the "SHOW MORE" link would expose the Pry Tool Kit; and BOOM there it is.
Thank you for taking the time to document this curious impairment, completely walking us through the cause and providing the Ridgeline community with a simple solution to mitigate potentially expensive experience. Bravo! Gratefully.
Thank you for taking the time to troubleshoot this for everyone in the world !
It is amazing that Honda would install a cable and NOT have the only holder NOT screwed into the panel next to it, so it never moved unless it was loosened for adjustment, etc...
My 19-year-old Snapper Lawn Mower has a way better cable attachment for the throttle cable than absolutely nothing that Honda did to all its people...
So I have a secondary video that I went back and re evaluated the problem and there is a cable holder but after looking further at the recordings Honda never seated it in place. If they did it popped out. So I have a zip tie for that as well.
Thank you for taking the time to educate us about that particular situation. Honda take note of this."""" God bless all of you out there.

As an engineer I was agast to see this video with HONDA (of all mfgrs) NOT providing a positive stop for the cable jacket!
You really should make a primary comment regarding your follow-up video, and pin it in the comments...😉

Can U post 2nd video link?
I just checked my 2019 trunk lock yesterday after seeing your video.
Sure enough there were the two pieces yellow tape. I did as you recommended to attach the latch cable to pvc fastener with a figure 8 zip tie. Worked liked a charm. Thx again for the heads-up sir, you are the MAN!
Just bought a ridgeline 2021, I checked and the two yellow tape are still solid but I took some super glue and made sure those two yellow tapes don’t ever come loose. I couldn’t zip tie because it was too tight, so I super glue that spot so it’ll never come loose as well
I had the same issue with my '06 Ridgeline. Took it to Honda and cost me hundreds of $$ to fix. Thanks for this Video. I will look into this and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Just bought a 2022 Ridgeline. I wonder if they fixed it 5 years later. Great video. Should send it to Honda.
I thought this video was going down a rabbit hole of bologna. I usually do not comment on Ridgeline videos, but this one was very good and informative. I store a bunch of my camping stuff in my trunk. If I get out in the woods and this fails - oh my - no dinner for CampingRandy. Thanks for this video. I’ll be checking mine and doing a video as well. Need to get the word out on this. I was yelling at the Tv, “put on a crossed set of zip ties” and bam, you did. Great job!
I keep junk in my trunk also. fixed it
;)
Looking at buying 2023 Honda Ridgeline. Surprised Honda haven't fixed this issue! Great video, thanks for the heads up!
I just bought a Ridgeline, it's my 2nd one...although I didn't have any issue with my first one, I'll check my new one, as this could be a disaster waiting to happen.
Thanks for the video, well done!
Great video. I am going to apply a preventative measure to my 23 BE just in case. We’ll done. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely awesome video. I’m out looking to buy a 2021 Ridgeline. This will be the 1st mod I make. Let’s hope Honda has corrected their GM style mistake for 2021 model year.
This is the kind of petty crap that hurt American auto makers. I hope Honda is not following suit.
The reason I do not own a Jeep anymore . I do own a Ridgeline though 😳
About to take possession of a new 2022 Ridgeline RTL-E Black Edition. Anybody know if the 2022 model corrected this issue?
@@TJarrett1000 you can get either RTL-E or Black Edition. Lol
Awesome, thanks for sharing. Surely I will be mad when thing get stuck like these. Last time the tailgate not open ,have to send to my Honda dealer to open it.
Will definitely secure the cable in my ‘21 to prevent a possible lockout some day. Thanks for showing us!
Did you fixed
Great troubleshooting skills! Excellent presentation skills as well! This video is hugely useful--thanks for taking the time to create it. I will just suggest checking the temperature rating of the zip ties you use. Not all zip ties are equal. I've seen zip ties I used for car stereo installations become brittle and fall apart due to the extreme heat conditions. I found a chart that indicated the interior of your car can reach 150 degrees F (or more!) with the windows up in summer, on a 100-degree day. I don't know how hot the trunk in a Ridgeline gets in the sun, but you can buy zip ties rated at 185 degrees and higher. Metal zip ties are rated at a whopping 1,000 degrees, which admittedly is overkill. Having an underrated zip tie eventually fail is just as bad as not installing it at all. 😀
I have a 2020 Ridgeline and as of now have never had this problem, but the mod seems worthwhile and will make the modification.
I just checked mine. It didn't travel like yours, but i still zip tied anyways. Thanks for the video!!!
Along with the rest, I'll be zip-tying the cable shortly. I appreciate your video showing the problem and solution. As you said, a trunk with food in it would certainly get a bit rank in a couple days. Not gonna take a chance on it. Thanks again.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Hate that this happened to you, but I'm glad that it did, because you probably saved the rest of us thousands of 💰💵
Excellent review of a potential problem for Ridgeline owners!! Thanks!
Thank you, sir. I made sure to take a look at mine. Because of my job, my trunk stays full. I would not be able to go up through the drain pug. Thank you once more
Great job! I just bought a 2023 and the dealer had removed the cover and lubed it up and then forgot to put the new panel on. I put it on and had to ask them for a push clip.. I’m going go open it up and see if they did any preventative maintenance. Thanks again!
I had a similar problem to, but my problem was the linkage inside the tailgate. one day it did not lock, so I unscrewed the back panel and found one of the linkage bars had come out of it's plastic holders. So I did the same as you and put ZIP tie's on all the linkage bars, to their holders, I checked it out, to make sure it works, before I put the back cover on again....the 5 cent ZIP tie's worked out great, no problems now.........You may want to do a video on that subject, because in my case, it did happen and was an easy fix. Thanks for sharing his insightful video, now I'll go check out that yellow tape!
I have a secondary video that talks about the channel lock. That actually was an additional issue. I had to re watch all my footage to come to the conclusion fully.
good thing you didnt have much items in that trunk...otherwise you couldnt get to that emergeny latch under the lid. theres no way you could have done this if you needed a spare tire and got locked out in the middle of nowhere.
great video. zip tied the area.
Thanks Yuriy. I just did this today to my Honda Ridgeline 2020 touring. Although there's no sign of movement of the cable. I did it anyway to avoid future problem.
Thanks for the heads-up. My 2019 is zip-tied now.
Oct 2023 model. Same thing. Did your fix. Thank you!
Hope you notified Honda. This can be a serious issue. They definitely need to fix this no reason we see doing there job’s. Thanks for the heads up.
WOW! Thanks so much for sharing this sir! It's amazing that you were able to trouble shoot that event! You are really on top of your game.
Even after the tie wrapping the tapes.
I would run a cable from the release handle to the drain plug through a conduit. Piece of mind 😊
just got a 2021 Black Edition this is great information to have definitely going to have to take a look at mine and secure mine thank you
Hi Yuriy, I justed watched your problem shooting of the bed truck lock system on your ridgeline. Awesome on the investigating work. Good thing your trunk was empty. I'm on the market to buying a pickup and compling a list of all issues on rideline , tacoma and baja. This will add to a list of rigdeline issues I've complied.
Thanks for sharing. Great vid. The trunk cover should and needs to be removable or have emergency release capability from the top/outside. This is just poor design and not enough deep dive during design phase. Especially when the spare tire is in there and becomes inaccessible in emergency situations.
Awesome video, very informative. I just got a 2023 , I will do this immediately
Thats the problem with electric locks. I wish we could just have a mechanical lock. Thanks for troubleshooting this for the rest of us.
Unfortunately most people have 💩in there and prevent access to the latch using your, yet resourceful, method. Well done just the same.
I'm most impressed that you were able to open that drain hole from the bottom, snake that aluminum rod just right, and open the trunk with the emergency lever. Nice problem solving. I wonder if crimping two aluminum wire sleeves on either side of that anchor would work. Zip ties dry out. Just a thought.
could be staged man
I have a 2021 hope they fixed this issue. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for figuring that out. I'll check my truck and try to rig it so this doesn't happen. I put a zip tie to the right of the cinch just in case.
Hey great video, especially in those tight angle shots! Thumbs up!
Outstanding video, new 23 RTL owner and new sub :) Just found your catch can video prior to this!
Also - I might consider metal (after padding) vs plastic, as plastic will eventually get weak and brittle and snap. Great video
Dude, I'm having this exact issue. I'm going to try this. I hope I'm able to see the manual release after removing the plug. thanks.
Yuriy,
I just opened it up and looked around. The cable you are referring to is actually the cable used by the physical key. On you keyfob has the physical key, use it in the lock and it actuates the cable. The electric solenoid doesn't use the cable you are referring to. I might be wrong but that's what I am seeing. I triggered the solenoid and the cable doesn't get touched at all. In your case, the cable shifted and prevented the key lock method to open the trunk manually.
I will actually be doing a secondary video maybe today or tomorrow and post up soon. Doing some diagnostics on it and there seems to be more than one thing at play here. I first need to confirm my suspicions and once I do I will make a secondary video. The zip tie I’m recommending is definitely helpful regardless. In fact if what I test out confirms what I think may be the issue, it can be the difference between the handle failing eventually and you never noticing that it failed. it will continue operating even though there is an issue. I Will show you all how to prevent this system from ever failing again. There are just too many flaws and no safety in place. The one that was in place failed so my repair method is definitely important.
@@YuriyMotso In the video, I didn't see you try using the key at all instead of the solenoid or squeeze button. The key should be the backup method to get in if squeeze handle is failing or dead battery. In your case cable shifted and may not be enough to open so going from the drain plug was the last hope
Look at stage 1 of the grieving process 🤣
@@YuriyMotso Got it. I totally missed it.
@@YuriyMotso no
Mine did this as well but just used the physical key to open it up instead of having to go underneath it through the drain plug
The physical key wouldn’t work in my scenario. This is worst case scenario.
Not sure how I ended up here but I’m definitely popping my trunk and checking to see if they corrected this issue with the 21 model. I work at Honda though so I highly doubt it and honestly laughed out loud when you said “this yellow tape is what Honda decided was a good idea.” You have no idea lmaooo. I guarantee there is a shit ton of workers at the Alabama plant who have been bitching to some engineer to no avail for years. Great video!
I have a 2017 also and I have no problems but I'm going to fix it thanks for the heads up.
Extremely well done. I have a 2021 Ridgeline, although seldom use this compartment. Good to know. Thank you!
Oh I use this compartment all the time. It’s the second most used door on my truck.
@@YuriyMotso Same here and the trunk is the #1 reason I chose the Ridgeline over the Tacoma.
Scene: You venture to your favorite grocery outlet for a scheduled curbside pickup. The stage is set..
-ACTION-
Worker: “Where do you want your groceries?”
You: “Eh, just put ‘em in the trunk.”
Worker: “So, in the back.. the truck bed?”
You: “No. The trunk. Here, let me show ya.”
..You and the worker walk to the back of the vehicle..
You: “Watch this! Bet you’ve never seen a truck with a trunk, have ya?”
..You open the tailgate like a door and swing it left. Your depress the super secret trunk release and.. and.. it opens
You: “The trunk.”
-CUT-
..You watch as their eyes light up, just like a kid that’s had a coin “appear” behind their ear for the first time..
@@ThatHondaGuy2
Then you get home and your ice cream melts while you bang on the bed trying to get the latch to open...😂😂😂
@@openeyes-411 Bwahahaha.. right
you’re better than the dealership man.
great video, my thoughts was to zip tied it on each side of the clamp for this issue
16 year RL owner here, 11.08, thats the issue, its been talked about for years. Dont keep stuffing that trunk full, leave some room. If it was an issue Honda will have a recall. I think in the owners manual it states this.
Very, very similar to a problem I had with my 2018 Honda Goldwing. I also used a ziptie to eliminate the issue on the Goldwing. You've got to love irony....
Budum tss
Thank-you very much for posting. I will be getting a 2019 and will open up the mechanism and zip tie. Will save me $$$$ going to the dealership. Great investigative work.👍 You da man !!!!
My 2005 honda accord had the same issue except I could access the trunk thru the car and release the latch. I had to replace the latch mechanism where I got from Amazon. From what I see in your video and my experience, those wires that control the latch can move over time.
Great fix and wow what a challenging problem. Your fix clearly solved the issue for you. I'm wondering if the real culprit is the retaining clip just before the ball on the trunk release cable. I've had to replace the broken plastic retaining clips on several mechanisms exactly like that you showed. Typically if the manufacturer plastic retaining clip fails the cable housing is pulled past the retainer letting the ball and cable "push" too far as you have shown. An aluminum replacement retaining clip is a permenant solution not subject to failure as a plastic zip tie will be over time.
I did a second video going in depth because I didn’t notice it the first time. But it was not installed properly which lead to the failure. I have heard others have now had this same issue after checking. Super thankful it failed when it did because moments earlier it was full to the brim with food.
Thank you. Got the trim tool kit using your link to do this to my 2019.
Great find ! I guess that's a part of the truck that Honda didn't test a 100 thousand times.
Well done! Just got a Ridgeline.
I have a 2021 hope they fix this issue thanks for the heads up.
Honda needs a copy of this video.
Well done video, thanks a lot, great tip and really appreciated the time you put on this.
Great video! I am having a small issue with that latch.
Thanks Yuriy just fixed my cable on 2019 RTL Ridgeline.
Whoa! Headed outside to fix that NOW!!! Thank you so much man.❤
Thank you Yuriy, this was most helpful. Just went and secured this part a little better.
Great video and great troubleshooting! That was a problem nail biter - I. Couldn’t stop watching this vid!!!!!
Very useful info, thanks. I'm going to check that von my Ridgeline.
Drill a small hole on that lip and zip tie it tight. Stopping the cable from moving. Very informative. Thanks
Man what a great information video… I do have a Ridgeline… I will check this out tomorrow…. Nice! Thank you
You are welcome
That’s insane! Great job sorting it out! 😊👍🏼
Drive down a really bumpy road. lol. But good job finding the culprit. I’ll be putting a dab of epoxy on mine to keep it from moving.
Great video and thanks a lot! My '21 hadn't slipped yet but I did the zip tie fix just in case!
Thank you. I’ve just bought a 2021 RTL and I will check this right away.
Looking at this I think the yellow tape was used to identify the location where the worker was to attach the cable to the bracket. I don't think Honda intended for the tape to secure the cable from sliding
Thanks for posting this. Mine was fine but I went ahead and added a zip tie to it as added measure
Excellent vlog and explanation, this isca must see and definitely check for video. Thanks Bunches
Great work, I hope your a Honda Technician!
Will check mine tomorrow and let you know.
The most informative video I have ever seen. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Awesome and informative video! Thank you, I’ll check mine to see if there’s any play and zip tie it while I’m at. Thanks again!

Excellant troubleshooting! 👍 You must be ex-military. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you for the fix, I had the same issue.
I am glad that I could help.
Nice work, thanks. Hopefully my 2022 doesn’t have this? You should send Honda a link to your video!
Thank you for the posting this information. I will have to check mine.
Great video - thanks for figuring this out and sharing!
Snappy sound track and content. Thanks!
