I have a Rav4 Prime SE that I bought new at MSRP for $41k. I then received $10k back via state and federal rebates and credits. At $31k net, it's the best darn vehicle you can get for the money. I've already put 17k miles in it and I absolutely love this thing. It has so much power in mountain passes and I actually find it very quiet for the price.

First I want to say I love all your reviews. They are quick paced, snappy, fun and especially informative. And most importantly, they are realistic and you review cars most people can afford to drive.
I really like the combination of the dark blue exterior and the tan interior that you can get on the RAV4. Great combo and look. Wish we could have got that on our Venza.
We loved the RAV4 Prime but here in Canada, we were told the wait was 2-5 years (depending on which sales person you talk to). Also, thank you for sharing that the RAV4 Prime (and our Venza) uses an eCVT not a regular CVT. They are completely different but too many reviewers just say it's a CVT and then commenters say, "Ugh, I hate CVT's!".

Being a Toyota fan (I’m on my fourth Camry), the one thing that bugs me about the brand (Honda too)is the interior materials do not improve as you move up the price ladder; the dash, headliner, armrests, etc. are exactly the same in the LE as the XLE. I would think that if you’re going to pay $20K more for the top of the line model that the materials would improve. I guess that’s what Lexus is for…

You requested comments on the RAV4 styling... I like the looks of the RAV4 in general but if I could, I would swap out the squared off wheel wells for rounded ones and remove the "Storm Trooper" vibe on the lower half of the front grill/bumper. Based on other RAV4 reviews, I would also add a little more sound deadening insulation. Thanks for another great family car review! 🙂

This hasn’t aged a bit as far as the exterior and I think for 2023 the tech will be updated to Toyotas new Infotainment system. With wireless over the air updates i think that we see in the 2023 highlander. And a fully digital display as well so this definitely won’t be out of date and it will age gracefully over the next few years.

If I could find one at a reasonable price - I'd snap one up. But 2021 RAV4 Prime SEs with 10-20k miles are selling for 55-60k and XSE trim for 60-70k In a market that's already kind of crazy - somehow the market has decided the RAV4 Prime is worth Audi / Volvo money and it makes no sense at all at that kind of price.

I really really wanted one of these to replace my burny bolt that gm bought back and 2017 Volt a year ago. Dealer markups we’re absolutely insane, I would have never never never saved enough gas to make up the rip off prices. So I bought a Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug in hybrid instead. For sticker. No markups. Yes it’ll never go as far on electric (I get 25 miles but can charge mid day) and never get as good gas mileage (20mpg on pure gas mode) but the money I saved over the RAV4 primeval buys the vehicles lifetime worth of gas and electric several times over.

This is the car we would have got for our long term daily driver tester but they simply are not available. I think the Rav 4 will get a whole new design change before the current demand on these is satisfied. If I knew part of my journey was going to be stop and go city traffic I would want a full battery. Probably get crazy range in that situation. Crazy.

  • @tonyzhu403
    @tonyzhu403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For Why to Recharge the Battery with the Engine:
You have a long commute, and you've depleted your battery on the way to work.
On the way home, you know you will be driving highway first, and then congested city traffic.
You might want to charge the battery while you are on the highway, sacrificing a little bit of fuel efficiency, and use the EV power during the congestion.

I have an XSE in blizzard white with the black top & love it. It has all the options. Waited 9 months for the car and hardly ever fill up since I get over 45 miles on a full charge. With crazy gas prices, I use primarily the EV range. If you drive it in Sport mode, the fun factor kicks in.

2022 RAV 4 Prime model SE owner. This summer we have been averaging 50 miles on all electric with a full charge, and when operating in pure hybrid mode with a depleted battery for nearly 1,000 miles has been 50.99 mpg, that is calculated by miles driven and gas pumped. The mpg dash gauge appears to be fairly accurate within 2 mpg or so. This is driving here in NW Oregon on rural highways and roads with speeds 30 MPH in town to 40 - 55 MPH on the open road.
This beats any SUV plug in hybrid all wheel drive that is available here in the U.S. in my opinion. If anybody knows of any other similar SUV that beats this please let me know and that will be our next SUV.

Have the ‘21 version for a year now… absolutely no regrets… if you are into practicality and efficiency, nothing on the market is it’s equal. Yes sadly they’ve only been able to make like 27k in ‘21 and for ‘22 same or even less. That’s probably why they are only available in ZEV states for now.
And yes like others have said, if you really consider what’s under the hood, especially the impressive HVAC system, it is an incredible feat of engineering to have so much power, efficiency, practicality. EVs are coming, no question, but Toyota’s previous stance of PHEVs for the longer term is proven very strongly with the RAV4 Prime.

I got my Rav4 Prime by pure luck in North Hollywood since guy buying it was stuck in Ukraine. I get about 2.9 mi/kwh in EV mode, 40 to 42 mpg in hybrid mode, and in pure gas mode charging battery it gets about 22mpg. If you let traction battery drain to where its in HV only mode it doesn't feel as fast. I have a feeling its closer to 225 hp like the normal hybrid if don't have extra charge. Yea its 12 hours at 16 amps 120V, you can limit the current on the car in the settings to 8 amps so it takes 24 hours to charge at 120V. I guess that's so don't over load a circuit depending where you are.

Toyota RAV4 is an automotive appliance, that is almost as much fun as driving a refrigerator on wheels. I dislike the exterior styling. It looks like Toyota has pre-dented the body panels so that no one will notice that you are a poor driver and got into a fender-bender. That said, I think this navy blue paint hides the ugliness well ...more than most of the other available colors. As always, great job Muzio Family 👍

One other reason to recharge the battery using the engine might be getting up very long mountain grades. Some PHEVs like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV don’t have a ton of power from the gasoline engine, so to maintain speed on hills you need to have a certain amount of charge in the battery

Was at probably historically highest volume Toyota dealer in Houston last week looking for a new Highlander. No vehicles on site. They were proud of the fact that they were asking only $2K over sticker plus almost $2K in mandatory worthless add ons (window tint, etc.). Tell them what you want and upon submitting your $500 non refundable deposit, they will see what they can do with no guarantee you will get what you need and no idea of time frame. No thanks.

Great review, Micah & Evie! Wondered why you left the current Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV off your list of competitors? Your excitement over the carpool stickers on the 2019 SEL over on KBB (th-cam.com/video/StIKWiTIKWY/w-d-xo.html) is part of the reason I bought one 🙂
I know it's a little dated & there's a new 3-row version coming out in '23, but it's still competitive with the RAV4 Prime, in my view.

@@2010appra yes CRv starts with 32k , rav4 around 27k and Highlander around 35.5k, also we don’t know the higher trim prices yet, so price wise it’s close to highlander

Needless Full Throttle acceleration that's the single most important thing and in fact in my opinion that they broke 300 horsepower is the only reason I'm considering this vehicle if it was less than 300 horsepower I would say no automatically it was this is a no-go I'm not buying this car too weak too slow

Do people realize that the first RAV4 was a compact SUV in line with the Suzuki Samurai? It was 20 inches shorter wheelbase than the new one and almost 40 inches shorter length. You can't keep calling this vehicle compact! It's like the first Honda Civic was thimble-sized and in a very small category BUT NOT ANYMORE!!!!

Micah, I'm confused. Are you still with Edmunds? Or are you on your own?
I kept pulling up Edmunds, looking for your reviews. And then suddenly you popped up on your own channel.
