- The surprise moderator for The Hobbit Panel was none other than the illustrious, #1 biggest LOTR celebrity nerd in history - Stephen Colbert! And his opening, in full Lake Town Spy costume, was perfection.

He looks like an older, thinner, homeless Robert Downey Jr.
Before he takes that eyepatch off, the similarity is so strong it's even creepy.
Or a younger, thinner, homeless RDJ
Even more homeless looking than RDJ ?
LMAO! I was thinking the same thing! Have you seen him in “In Dreams”?
EXACTLY
Peter Jackson himself has acknowledged him as the biggest Tolkien geek he has ever met. So that's as official as it gets
vars28 He said that about Christopher Lee
Christopher Lee doesn't count, he's above everyone else, he's Tolkien's fave
Stephen beat their own Tolkien expert at a Tolkien - off
Jason Storey I do have a lot of issues with both the LOTR movies and the Hobbit movies, especially the way everyone seem to consider them cinematic masterpieces -
but "butchered" is a strong word. While I do believe that some simple changes to the LOTR movies would have made them vastly better, you'd never get the actual books into movies, they have to be adapted, which means heavily edited. If you can't take that, you shouldn't watch the movies at all.
IMO, the LOTR movies needed some important tweaks: no bad guy Faramir, no Ents unaware of Saruman's deeds (I get the 2nd act thing but it doesn't work anyway), less Arwen (especially Liv Tyler's version), and especially much less soppy closeups with cheesy music and slow, cringey faces... also tons of other changes, but still, there's a lot of good stuff there too. A lot. Not so much in The Hobbit, sadly. The second one is mostly fine - until the end, but the first one is silly and then bad action, and the last one is abysmal.
Oh, and Hatchet Jack: calling someone a fat twat just makes you look childish.
Johannes Wiberg “evil” Faramir and a bigger role for Arwen was very important for making the films good films
wow his face really reminds me of robert downey jr
Tropic Thunder
totally what i was thinking! with longer hair and no glasses he looks similar!
comes from heroin, not joking
Nicholas Rao I feel like he should have a moustache and goatee
because hes smug among his own kind
watching geeks geek out over their fandom makes my heart warm
Stephen Colbert is voicing the innermost thoughts of every person with a niche interest ever, who hopes that one day their prized obsession will become the object of popular adoration and by extension, the vehicle of their own social acceptance.
beautifully worded, mellon.
@@dearmalaysia absolutely, watermelon.
the most awesome lord of the rings fan ever
daniel peachey eh their are better ones
Finished reading the hobbit.
Done with the trilogy on LOTR
Just ordered The Silmarillion
Soon you will find yourself with The Unfinished Tales and The Letters of Tolkien
don't forget children of Hurin.
Its not a trilogy
Best for last
How're you doing? Finished yet? 😉😂
(surprise!) He knows how to work a crowd...
Holy shit! I got through half of the video before I realized that the little figure at the bottom of the frame was Colbert! I was so distracted by the _huge_ screen!
Is it just me or Stephen looks like Robert Downey Jr. cosplaying Assasin creed or something
His smile at the end though... He's really passionate about being there :-)
He kinda looks like Robert downey JR
"And i would say 'yes. Oh god, yes! yes, i would!" Lololol same!!! 😂😂😂
one of the most well-learned lotr fans out there, yet he still pronounces all the names wrong lol
Not all of us can be linguists
He pronounces them as he reads them - as only a linguist will know how a declaration should be read, usually...
Actually Tolkien explains a lot of the pronunciation quirks in the appendices so Stephen really should be able to say them correctly. Especially the name Eowyn because there's an accent above the E and it's fairly safe to assume that the accent changes it to an A sound even if you haven't read the appendix. You don't need to be a linguist.
True, but what I'm trying to say is that what your brain is inclined to is what you'll remember more. You and I, being linguistically inclined, are able to pore over the linguistic explanations in the appendices and appreciate them with relish... perhaps are able to remember the meanings of everyone's names according to the Sindarin, Quenya, etc. On the other hand, Colbert, being more historically & politically inclined, is much better at remembering who did what when because of their relationships to whom in the First, Second, and Third Ages than I ever will be. I hope this makes sense.
Ah yes, that makes sense. I certainly needed multiple readings before some of the less prominent references to the wider history sunk into my memory but with the pronunciations etc. I found it quite natural and adapted quickly.
He kinda looks like Robert Downey Jr.
Looks similar to Downey Jr's disguise in the Sherlock Holmes movie
Nerdgenius monologue right there! Does he write/compose all his stuff himself?!
To be a fantasy nerd and have someone ask u smth about ur favorite franchise ( in my case ASOIAF ) is one of the best feelings a nerd can have
Rolling their eyes when I begin talking about Middle-earth? Most of my life.
The mighty Stephen. Worlds leading expert on Tolkien lore.
Why did this make me tear up?
what a geek he is!!!!!!!!!!!!! ugh i love him so much!!
Killed it!
If only someone could go back and remake the final movie. Saying it was horrible would be an understatement.
Whoever wants to expand Middle Earth. Get Stephen on speed dial let him explain
i read the silmarill 6 times.. wish i could talk to S
I’m in the same spot Stephen is at now in regards to my love of the works of Brandon Sanderson.
If anyone can fix the mess that is to be the Amazon series, it is this man. Send him in. He'll turn the tables and clear out the metaphorical money changers from the figurative temple courts like a Messianic super fan.
The guy knows his shit
He looks like if Tony Stark was a different kind of nerd and invested all of his family's money on Fantasy genre but it somehow failed and now he's poor and homeless.
I thought he was Robert Downey jr at first
Colbert should do a Iron Man cosplay.
He gives me hope for the rest of us middle earth junkies.
I thought it was Downey!
He looked a bit like robert downey jr
"Ee-owyn"? "Fare-a-mer"? Come on, first Goe-lum, then Smog, now this?
Really? He owns the stage? Seem reasonably fair he is on it then ...
I
Love
Him
Just not his pronunciation lmao
Kaiser Suzi I meant no disrespect to Stephen when I commented that. I too have been studying Tolkien's works, and I know for a fact that some of the words he pronounced were incorrect. Tolkien has numerous detailed appendices on his Quenyan and Sindarin languages etc. explaining how certain things in the legendarium are pronounced, such as Fëanor for example:
It's pronounced "Fay-anor" not "Fee-anor"
We all make mistakes though, and I love that he shares my deep love for the Middle-earth universe, but I just giggled at some of his pronounciations. I'm sure I may pronounce a lot of things wrong as well. So please don't be so harsh, I realise that he's learned in the subject
l♥ve y♥u m♥n :D #FullHomoSapiens
Man, I miss Colbert before he sold out.
sigh same, now it is just toe the lib hate Trump line, he used to be funny, loved TCR and i am a massive conservative, i own his book I Am America and So Can You ...good book lol
