      I bought my 4K set at Walmart, but they're available on Amazon too. It looks amazing! Especially Fellowship, bc that one was always a little rough on previous transfers. The 4K makes it nice and crisp, but the real hero of this transfer is the colors. So many subtleties to the shading... previous shots that were just a wall of green now have a whole mix of different shades. And of course the green tint has been fixed. @@ChrisisisB I completely agree Hobbit movies were awful, but this isn't on Peter Jackson. If anything, he saved a failed project. Guillermo Del Toro was the original director of the Hobbit movies, but he left after the constant delays of the filming (because MGM back then was with a debt of almost US$ 4 billion dollars). Peter then took the job, but he claimed himself there was lack of time, there wasn't any space for pre-production and there was a rush to start filming ASAP (the rush and stress of the movies can be seen in the Behind The Scenes clips). In the end, Peter Jackson's name is attached to these movies, but I think its unfair to say the movies are bad because of him.

      @@alzoha1267 - they're releasing a new edition of the movie in 4K resolution "ultra-HD" with HDR. Many old films that get re-released into 4k are digitally up-scaled from the original release, which doesn't actually add all that much detail. For Lord of the Rings, they've taken the original film it was shot on and re-scanned the entire movie with a new 4k film scanner so they could re-create the film with truly improved detail in the picture. But when they saw the higher-detail film next to the original computer graphics, the CGI looked very dated, because computers simply weren't as powerful back then. Because they don't want that to take away from the film (think high-fidelity human characters fighting the Balrog, but it looks like it's from an old video game), they've re-done some of the special effects to bring it to a modern standard and keep a cohesive look throughout the films. They're also updating the sound with modern equipment so it will work better with modern sound systems. They've also given this treatment to the deleted scenes in the extended edition as well.

    I must say I can't help but feel there's a certain charm that's lost by "upgrading" the old films into 4K. That sort of soft blurry haze is pretty iconic and in my mind always helped convey a higher sense of immersion into the fantasy world, apposed to the harsh sharpness of the Hobbit and modern films.

    • @walkergibbs6984
      @walkergibbs6984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s less about the resolution of the different formats and more about how they remastered it. The blu ray version of the movies better retains the filmic look of trilogy but when they did this 4k version they got rid of film noise and other things to try and make it look like it was shot digitally which to most people just looks worse. A 4K transfer of a movie shot on film doesn’t have to look worse and a lot don’t, Peter Jackson just doesn’t realize what makes the original trilogy better than the Hobbit.

      There is a new Hobbit fan-edit that removes all of those bad CGI scenes and pointless action scenes entirely. The Maple Films Studio edit of The Hobbit condenses the trilogy into a single 4 ½ hour film that faithful to Tolkien’s book. The color grading of this edit was even adjusted to match the appearance of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This is the Hobbit version that I use to start my Middle-earth marathon.

    Posted Dec 2021; I bought a Sony A80J (4K) OLED 65" for an early black Friday sale (replaced my aging 50" 1080P Panasonic Plasma). Bought the Lord of the Rings extended edition plus theatrical release set on 4K UHD through Amazon. I finished watching the extended edition trilogy last night. I can honestly say that it was like watching them for the first time again. They are outstanding films, and the 4K UHD versions are simply stunning. The difference between watching them in 4K UHD on a new and larger OLED vs. watching them on my old Plasma in "regular" Blu-ray is like night and day.

    Where is the film grain on the first trilogy? I have seen those 3 movies 2 times in cinemas. Then, I watch the Blu-ray 4K, and there are a lot of scenes that has not any grain despite every single shot had grain 🙄 - Also the white zones of The Hobbit 5 Armies Battle starts to be TOO WHITE on the last part of the film, even if it's noot TOO HYPER WHITE than you can see on the blu-rays. Also, there are a lot of strange filters than make halos on the image, those halos weren't on the 48fps 3D cinematic versions. 😡

    • @rizzo-films
      @rizzo-films 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There's some truth to that, I think. Apocalypse Now basically ruined Coppola even though it was a creative bounty, and I think RotK ALMOST took down Jackson, more in the sense that he put more of himself into the trilogy than probably anything else he's made. King Kong was great too, and he was able to return to Middle Earth for the Hobbit, but I don't think you can compare what he did with the original trilogy to too many efforts made by other directors in movie history. This was before the MCU and it's highly organized structure of committees and QA teams that drove the Marvel films all the way into Endgame and beyond. Jackson was basically Feige, the Russo bros and Favreau combined into one person. Yes he had great teams and powerful producers, but it all had to filter through him, he really was in charge of everything. As director, the energy of the film is YOUR energy. If you don't have it in you, the film won't either. I can't even imagine the nerves of steel that this required. If he retired tomorrow I'd be grateful just to have this first trilogy.
