Watch any interview with him when he's not in "entertainment modus" and the sincerity, insight and kindness radiating from him is so heartwarming. Also there is an amazing podcast by The Tolkien Professor that covers all that material. Everything Colbert said is covered in these podcasts. Did you know that Strider was originally a hobbit with wooden feet named Trotter and that Frodo was to be called Bingo!?
