Yes every person has a melting point. It's how much the body can take it, every person's body is different. Sadly, many people don't realize this. If a bunch of person are bullying their co-worker, let's say Michael Douglas here; they keep bullying him, tormenting him, mistreating him, humiliating him, especially when he has other problems to deal with too, it will eventually hit his melting point and will go into a state what many called insanity.

To me, the funniest thing about this scene is the he was going to leave the briefcase behind ! He starts to walk away and they stopped him. He didn't care about the worthless briefcase and his lunch. He cared about the fact that even though he tried to be respectful and polite they still wanted to bully him.

Falling Down is about economic and societal strain on working class people and their treatment as an expendable commodity. Which is the whole part of the "not economically viable" scene. It had little to actually do with the inconvenience of being stuck in traffic on a hot summer day. That was symbolism of him reaching his melting point.
23 years later this movie still very relevant. White, black, Asian, Latino, it doesn't matter. The protagonist could have been any of those ethnicities...To a certain extent we can all relate to this guy. Taps into the feeling of helplessness against society that many of us have. There us a little bit of William in all of us.

"Falling Down" is simply a classic--an insightful, perceptive, intelligent and also hilarious movie. "Falling Down" also features one of Michael Douglas's best performances.

What I always loved about confrontational scenes like this in so many movies is that I bet that the actors playing the bad guys are actually on really good terms with the main actors and really like them a lot. Everyone that played the supporting characters in this movie were soooo perfect. I love how he takes a swig of the coke, knowing straight away this is going to end bad. Like a gunslinger at a saloon.
Yeah, I guess it's more symbolic than anything. As he sees it, this world took everything from him, even his family. That suitcase, lunch, and government employee outfit - that put together image, it's all he has left. Just the illusion of a man with something to look forward to.

Alright gonna say it now SPOILERS, just in case anyone is coming around and wants to watch the movie. The actual turning point for William was when he lost rights to his daughter and the America's national defense fired him.
Especially nowadays with the pressures that society puts on us now more than ever over our appearance, our social status, our financial standing. This is an unfair, cruel, and dishonest world that we live in, and this man decided he wasn't going to pretend anymore. He isn't okay, and he's not going to pretend that he is anymore. He's done allowing people to walk all over him. The only difference between him and us is that he actually had the balls to take action. There is something special about this movie, there's something satisfying about seeing him fight back when all he wanted to do was be left alone.
In the Italian dubbing, where he says: "Maybe you wrote in fucking English, I could fucking understand it", in Italian instead he says: "Well maybe we attended different schools"... I think that's equally brilliant, in a much subtle way ahahah
Yeah he wasn't shown how to properly use it. I bought a Balisong knife after seeing this movie and practiced night and day (I also went through a lot of band aids) until I got it :-) After a while, I got to the point where I was fast as hell with it! And I still have that same knife!!
DRock6906 They're really fun and honestly a great tool for toughening up your hands/knuckles, and even learning how to make deliberate actions with high risks/stress involved (using a live blade with the risk of slicing your finger open if you mess up). Tbh I felt like my reaction time/hand coordination improved a lot after learning how to do rollovers and other tricks with the balis... Oh I also lost a lot of blood and almost cut my toe off, but hey, was worth it.

I remember seeing this flick at the movies when I was a little kid. When he chased after him yelling “you forgot the briefcase!” everyone in the theater stood up and clapped and cheered.
Ebert was wrong about alot of things. He also said horror films were targeted at hate for women, And Joel also made The Lost Boys. Whether or not you like that its an 80s staple. This character and this movie hits hard for me and for a lot of people, there is something deeply special about this film. It hits on something that is uncomfortable for many to talk about. There are a lot of people out there who have been pushed around but are just too nice to push back. Good people get the short end of the stick, and the bad ones get the rewards. This man was one of the very few that decided to push back, enough was enough, and there are people out there right now that are just one bad move away from fighting back, from ending it all. There was something uncomfortably satisfying about seeing this man get revenge on the people that pushed his buttons.

Falling Down is about economic and societal strain on working class people and their treatment as an expendable commodity. Which is the whole part of the "not economically viable" scene. It had little to actually do with the inconvenience of being stuck in traffic on a hot summer day. That was symbolism of him reaching his melting point.

23 years later this movie still very relevant. White, black, Asian, Latino, it doesn't matter. The protagonist could have been any of those ethnicities...To a certain extent we can all relate to this guy. Taps into the feeling of helplessness against society that many of us have. There us a little bit of William in all of us.

"Falling Down" is simply a classic--an insightful, perceptive, intelligent and also hilarious movie. "Falling Down" also features one of Michael Douglas's best performances.

What I always loved about confrontational scenes like this in so many movies is that I bet that the actors playing the bad guys are actually on really good terms with the main actors and really like them a lot.

Yeah, I guess it's more symbolic than anything. As he sees it, this world took everything from him, even his family. That suitcase, lunch, and government employee outfit - that put together image, it's all he has left. Just the illusion of a man with something to look forward to.

The actual turning point for William was when he lost rights to his daughter and the America's national defense fired him.

Especially nowadays with the pressures that society puts on us now more than ever over our appearance, our social status, our financial standing. This is an unfair, cruel, and dishonest world that we live in, and this man decided he wasn't going to pretend anymore. He isn't okay, and he's not going to pretend that he is anymore. He's done allowing people to walk all over him. The only difference between him and us is that he actually had the balls to take action. There is something special about this movie, there's something satisfying about seeing him fight back when all he wanted to do was be left alone.

Yeah he wasn't shown how to properly use it. I bought a Balisong knife after seeing this movie and practiced night and day (I also went through a lot of band aids) until I got it :-) After a while, I got to the point where I was fast as hell with it! And I still have that same knife!!

They're really fun and honestly a great tool for toughening up your hands/knuckles, and even learning how to make deliberate actions with high risks/stress involved (using a live blade with the risk of slicing your finger open if you mess up). Tbh I felt like my reaction time/hand coordination improved a lot after learning how to do rollovers and other tricks with the balis... Oh I also lost a lot of blood and almost cut my toe off, but hey, was worth it.

This was one rare morning that turned into a rare scene .
Legend has it up to this day the gangsters still forgot the briefcase.

This character and this movie hits hard for me and for a lot of people, there is something deeply special about this film. It hits on something that is uncomfortable for many to talk about. There are a lot of people out there who have been pushed around but are just too nice to push back. Good people get the short end of the stick, and the bad ones get the rewards. This man was one of the very few that decided to push back, enough was enough, and there are people out there right now that are just one bad move away from fighting back, from ending it all. There was something uncomfortably satisfying about seeing this man get revenge on the people that pushed his buttons.
I like how smoggy and gross L.A. looks in this shot. I live here and this is how I think of it, unless you're right on the beach.
It's gotten way better since then though. Bad days for sure, but air quality has improved thankjs to emissions standards.
It's also residual smoke from the LA riots fires that were taking place during filming.
