It seems Margaret Atwood wasn't too far off. Reality is more bizarre than fiction. Thanks Kristin. Brilliant woman. She is absolutely spot on the mark with this stuff.
She's projecting what her feminism does to men and families in her society. Feminism, financialization, and the cult of work all go hand in hand, politically and historically. Debt obligations and workplace expectations, and their social fallout, were very predictable, even in the 50s.
@@anthonypanneton923 She was writing her fiction simultaneous with the mass eviction of men from family into work in her society. You're never going to appreciate Civil Rights, and equality, until you start telling both sides of the story. You can't do analysis otherwise. Just fiction!

Initially some came to America to flee religious persecution. Ironically, history shows many of these religions became persecutors in their own right. But I would say after that initial influx of religious exodists, people came to America for opportunity to have a better life.

The MAGA cult has seized upon the Christian religion as a tool and have perverted it by convincing their followers that the 1st amendment clause on the separation of church and state that they are taking God out of America, while it's quite the opposite. It guarantees the right to practice religion, any religion freely without government interference, or force. These people are not about true Christian values. It has been said fascism will not come from abroad. Fascism will come to America wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross. It's ignorance that could lead us to be the beggars to our own demise.
Christian Nationalism has always been around - different names, i.e., Moral Majority, Tea Party, Families First, etc. Their voice has just been lower level until now with MAGA and Trump. Trump is not a politician. He does not care how the country functions, only that it gives him power. He is a typical heavy handed corporate animal, looking for the most from the least. He saw a golden opportunity with the Christian Nationalists to achieve this status and promoted and used them to the extreme degree that we are seeing today. A great degree if power is now in their hands and we should be aware and alert to how our basic tenets and constitution are vulnerable. Even with Trump gone, this faction will still be a threat.

Interesting fact. Over a dozen groups whose names appeared on the Project 2025 Mandate For Leadership: The Conservative Promise have asked that their names be removed. Have spent the last 8 days reading the publication. Which is available ONLINE.
I have read parts of it. What do you say to conservative colleagues who refuse to believe Project 2025 is part of the current Republican party's platform?
@@chriscupp First off have they read the entire Project 2025 publication? As well as the 2024 Republican Party Platform? Both are available online. Both being conservative they both have similar suggestions. But a suggestion is just that, a suggestion.🙂 Unless someone makes the effort to read publications how can they discuss what is in it? Fact is, too many people regardless of their political leanings have a bad habit of not doing their homework. They rely on hearsay, or edited segments of a publication to make their point as to why they dislike the publication. The Project 2025 clearly states 'This work, Mandate for Leadership 2025: The Conservative Promise, is a collective effort of hundreds of volunteers who have banded together in the spirit of advancing positive change for America. Our work is by no means the comprehensive compendium of conservative policies, nor is our group the exclusive cadre of conservative thinkers. The ideas expressed in this volume are not necessarily shared by all. What unites us is the drive to make our country better.' Maybe it's because we are longtime homeschoolers, with liberal arts degrees from great universities, but I never go on hearsay, I do my homework. It's a long publication, and akin to a dry, somewhat boring university class. But I took ten days to slowly read it and think about what I read. And I am glad I did. People also need to be reminded that the House and Senate would still have to approve of any ideas put forth Project 2025.🙂 Which is why who one votes for House and/or Senate is so important.

Yes. It is a plan to establish more power under the executive branch, eliminate benefits and basically undermine the constitution. When Trump says "you won't have to vote again" he means it. It is over 900 pages. But you can look it up on Wikipedia for a quicker understanding. Also look up Heritage Foundation. And vote!
Thank you for stating what no one else can seem to do. Project 2025 is labeled as a Conservative Plan. But, once you begin reading its contents and the Advisory Board members. To answer the hosts question of "Why is this the ascendant version of Christianity?"; it is simple to answer. This is the "ascendant" version because this version holds that it's adherents and believers are correct to force other to follow these beliefs. It is about power, control, a feeling of supremacy and a sick satifaction in punishing the people that they feel are "less than". Edit: reworded a section for readability.
The real problem is that this is not Christianity. Allow me to clarify, one of the chief issues is that this is not Christianity. The journalist Chris hedges understood and spoke against this quite accurately. This is heresy masquerading as Christianity. As hedges understood, these individuals purporting to be “Christians“ are nothing but cynical apostates. Their words and actions do not correspond to the message of Jesus. Instead what they correlate to quite strongly is theocratic fascism. The parallels between their words and actions in the words of actions of the Italian fascists and the German fascists are very close to being almost identical. And what is worse is that Trump is so incompetent and so much of a cynical opportunist that he would not even for one moment hesitate to take a second look at project 2025. All he knows is that it will give him more wealth more prestige more power and essentially keep him where he wants to be: golfing, tweeting, holding rallies and pretending like he is working for America while looting the American treasury.
yep it’s a sexual fetish, they get turned on having power over all peoples lives and bodies, especially the people that they hate and despise, the more people r scared the more it arouses them, i swear to God it 100% is a sexual fetish they have, to empose their power upon all of society, it gets them more aroused then anything ever possibly could! it’s a disgusting demonic fetish!
A good example of North American Christion Nationalism was the Province of Quebec in the 1st half of the 20th century where the Catholic Church determined the social order under the Duplessis government. The priests told women how many children to have. The population went up, free speech was surpressed , and the Quebec economy stagnated.
We have never been a “Christian” nation. We fled Europe for that very reason. We are a nation of diversity and the freedom to choose! Let’s make sure we keep it that way!
Donald may state that "GOP 2025" is too extreme, but I would say Donald I don't believe you. My bet is that Trump is very pleased with the document, and IF elected will go out of his way to make it happen. For that reason I cannot vote for either his candidacy or the GOP in total.
These issues came to a critical boiling point when national statistics were beginning to demonstrate that mystical christian families were being outnumbered in America and were indeed becomming a minority themselves. Notice that this is the same timeframe that Congress and other democratic institutions have become less than useful tools to solve societal problems and we seem to be fighting for blood & soil now. 🎉
AGENDA 47, posted on Trump's campaign page, which is his agenda for when he wins the 2024 election and becomes the 47th president, directly correlates to the proposals in project 2025. It's essentially the same thing as project 2025.
Funny thing though I went back to re read his agenda 47 and its gone. Please correct me if I am wrong but I agree with you. It was a heading on his campaign page, and it does match P 2025 but its now gone.

We need to distinguish what words like “Christian”, “Evangelical Christianity”, and “Christian Nationalism” mean and who they are meant for. This is a movement that speaks to, primarily, a White Protestant Christianity. This movement does not include non-White Protestant Christians or Catholics. It’s primarily based out of the religiosity of the White South, post the Civil War. This is why you don’t see many Black or POC Christians or many Catholics as part of this movement. At the basis is it White Nationalism that is rooted in American Racism. Those of us that are not apart of this movement, know and understand the coded language.

I would love to see Kristin collaborate with someone like Russell Moore on another book that clearly spells out the history of Christian Nationalism. I think Moore would do a good job of rounding out Du Mez's scholarship in some ways. Du Mez is too harsh on Billy Graham for example (she needs to go read Graham's article in Parade Magazine, February 1981, where he literally calls out Jerry Falwell and the rest of these goobers at the beginning of this movement). Moore, as editor of Christianity Today, would be able to provide a more balanced perspective. I'd also like to see them spell out Paul Weyrich's role in this mess. His nasty fingerprints are all over these conservative think tanks and advocacy groups like Heritage Foundation. An expose on who he was and what he said would be powerful. He was vocally anti-democratic, but he founded or participated in the founding of so many of these organizations, and yet almost nobody knows anything about him. He's also an important link in the Catholic aspect of Christian Nationalism that gets ignored sometimes.
“Bad Faith” is a recent documentary about exactly what you have commented here. It goes into a good deal of detail on Weyrich & the roots of this phenomenon.
As far as making the country a Christian Nation, someone should tell any one who's not Christian and who votes Republican, that they should be careful what they wish for. Life could become really uncomfortable for them.
Great interview! I left the Catholic church when I realized, they were trying to invalidate my love. Easiest decision of my life and I’m saving membership fees to boot.
The troubling thing about the founders is that they almost never talked about Jesus. They talked about Providence. At the time this was assumed to mean Christianity but in the broadest sense, without any restrictions for religious practices. But the Constitution is quite clear on this in its first Amendment. Establishment Clause Prohibits Congress from establishing a religion or favoring one religion over another. In its strictest interpretation, this clause would prevent the federal government from adopting an official religion. (Also states that there must not be "excessive entanglement" between church and state. Free Exercise Clause Protects citizens' right to practice their religion as they choose, and prohibits Congress from restricting those practices.
This is no different than the Taliban in Afghanistan - crushing peoples rights and forcing and imposing their oppressive ideology. Jesus didn’t come to take over the Roman government. He came to love people, and that’s what we are to do to change the world.
I guess happiness will be irrelevant and not being arrested, not being stoned and not being castigated by society will replace happiness. So much for those of us who believe that this is our only existence and the promise of happiness in the afterlife is worthy of suffering in this life.

The language itself makes a clear direct statement that _*_our government is not based on the Christian religion and any attempt by a government official to represent our government as Christian contradicts the text and the historical understanding of our founders."_*

The Constitution demands protection from invasion. Let's get the illegals out of here.
Cherry picking.
Both sides of the aisle, cherry picking which laws are applicable, which parts are applicable and cherry picking who they're applicable to.
The pulsing of citizenry lives', blown out of the water. With it, so went economic, political and cultural stability.

Yep
Trump has absolutely no use for the 10 essential ethical values of Christianity and repudiates them day after day after day.

Not a one. He does embody the Seven Deadly Sins, though. And the lawless one. History has produced many that fit their end days prophecies, but the proponents intend it to enslave people and become the overlords. Steven Miller who puts stolen babies in cages and then adopts them out to be forever lost to the mother whose arms he ripped them out of? Oh sure, the AntiChrist or Satan because they are a living hell.
I've long said that trump is the physical embodiment of the 7 deadly sins. And im not even christian!
But he is useful for pushing through their orthodoxy through to subjugate the rest of us.
For some, church is a business.
You see them in your community.
Well documented, in early 1970s' Trilateral Commission's "The Crisis Of Democracy" report. In which the international elite complained of "an excess of democracy".
Churches should pay taxes.
They have no power over us. None of them can make anyone believe how they want. They are demons. They lie and they believe in only evil.
Project 2025 should be called Project 1125. That was the year during which the Unholy Crusades began.

A good example of North American Christion Nationalism was the Province of Quebec in the 1st half of the 20th century where the Catholic Church determined the social order under the Duplessis government. The priests told women how many children to have. The population went up, free speech was surpressed , and the Quebec economy stagnated.
Outstanding interview with a great historian doing very, very important work.
I love Prof Du Mez! 😎❤ Thank you Amanpour!
We have never been a “Christian” nation. We fled Europe for that very reason. We are a nation of diversity and the freedom to choose! Let’s make sure we keep it that way!
Very well said, every word is true
Excellent program. God bless...
Donald may state that "GOP 2025" is too extreme, but I would say Donald I don't believe you. My bet is that Trump is very pleased with the document, and IF elected will go out of his way to make it happen. For that reason I cannot vote for either his candidacy or the GOP in total.
“Under his eye….”
It’s coming….unless we all vote against it.
I did but sadly here we are anyhow, thanks to the cult
These issues came to a critical boiling point when national statistics were beginning to demonstrate that mystical christian families were being outnumbered in America and were indeed becomming a minority themselves. Notice that this is the same timeframe that Congress and other democratic institutions have become less than useful tools to solve societal problems and we seem to be fighting for blood & soil now. 🎉
Congress is only like that because of the do nothing republicans. Thats the gameplan to break govt and make people think govt cant wrk

Thankful I been a free thinking Ex-Christian for 38 years.
I've been a free thinking Christian for over 40 years. God gave man free will, even for His offer of Salvation to the world. Project 2025 is taking what God gave us away. You can't MAKE ANYONE BE ANYTHING THEY DONT WANT TO BE!!!
@KateCart
So, you think your God can? 'His offer?' That was man that created sin and convinced YOU of sin & salvation. Read John 14:12-14 You can do works Jesus has? Walk on water? That takes faith though. Peter supposedly had the faith to walk on water. Talk is really cheap these days. Where's the Christians walk...
It would of course be very interesting to have a discussion with Kristin and Russ Vought on Amanpour & co. Agenda 25 needs to be thrown out entirely.
Project 2025 & Agenda 47!
So utterly outrageous! Those are not my beliefs, and I will bet they are not the beliefs of millions of Americans. The Founding Fathers did not hold those beliefs, either. This is a battle for our nation's conscience and for our freedom. I hope we are ready.
*Join the Enlightenment, support Secular Humanism.*
Christianity is in decline worldwide with over 70,000,000 million Americans being "NOT" religious.
*America is a Secular Nation.*
Ask those Christian institutions (churches, schools etc) to start paying taxes as they start meddling in the politics.
Start? They have been trying to get power forever. Remember the crusades.
The idea that they know and use God's laws is ludicrous. They interpret the Bible as they please and pick and choose what they like and don't like.
Exactly. And they forgot the Love your neighbor as yourself part. Well, they forgot the entire love part. But I do see the part about being put under a powerful delusion so they'll believe the lie.
This one is true throughout time. So it must always be the last days.... 2Timothy3 But Mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God --- ....
.... So also, these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
1 Timothy 6 False Teachers and the Love of Money. Strange book of character and morals, love, describes those who pervert the teachings because their agenda is financial gain. They are described as having a corrupt mind.
They and their bad characters are described throughout. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. The rich are admonished to be generous, to share.
Okay, that describes them, you think? What I find perrplexing is that for their ability to read and comprehend they just can't see themselves truthfully.
They just can't see the resemblance to themselves.
Donald Trump's vision for himself is not an "open question!!" It's staying out of prison!! Don't get it twisted.
Thats all his vision. And he is using Christian nationalism to get what he wants. He doesnt give a hoot about them
Good work Kristin..
The more you read Project 2025, the more it really looks more like Reject 1725

American mass extinction.
16:35 the divide is right down to the neighborhood churches, sadly. It's about being blessed and giving the church money. "Name it claim it", "God wants you to be rich", "Do as I say because God told me to tell you this ..." all grift. Forget feeding the poor and housing the homeless, loving the children, taking care of widows! That's not fun!! There's no monetary reward in that!! "If you're not rich then you're doing something wrong." 🥺 That is the true meaning of "TAKING GOD'S NAME IN VAIN"
What's on the other side is Iran or at best N. Korea.
You're wrong. Does the name Phyllis Schlafly ring a bell? Conservative Catholics were big into the "pro-life" movement, and I think there are some Catholics involved in 2025. Look at the Supreme Court. All the conservatives on the court are catholics

Redefine the Constitution? I think it will more likely completely gut it.
Exactly! And this is why the Heritage Foundation repeatedly identifying Project 2025 as a "conservative" agenda is so hypocritical: it's actually completely subversive.
Biblical marriage means that the man literally OWNS THE WOMAN
Yes, and in reading Project 2025 it says the family will be defined as one man , one woman and their children. The next paragraph says that the husband shall be working. To me, this means women will be back to the 1950's, stay at home Mom's.

Why don't you just state clearly that he wants to be a dictator rather than a president?
45 appears to build relationships with the authoritarian dictators of Russia and North Korea. It’s a playbook he longs to be a part of.
I’m trying to think of a case where combining religion and government ended well for the average citizen….
Never
I always replace the word "God" with "my Ego" when I hear these people talk. So, you must "follow "my Ego's" law" makes a lot more sense. No one can tell anyone else what God is. That has to be a personal experience. I have no interest in following someone else's Ego.
Whatever happened to the "...indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" part of the pledge of allegiance?
Jesus and John Wayne is a GREAT book. I highly recommend it!!!!
Great commentary! Americans are sleepwalking towards Christo-Fascism. Vote for Kamala!
As far as making the country a Christian Nation, someone should tell any one who's not Christian and who votes Republican, that they should be careful what they wish for. Life could become really uncomfortable for them.

I love her book. Kristin Du Mez is a very good writer. She has exposed Evangelicals as a cult .
The troubling thing about the founders is that they almost never talked about Jesus. They talked about Providence. At the time this was assumed to mean Christianity but in the broadest sense, without any restrictions for religious practices. But the Constitution is quite clear on this in its first Amendment.
Establishment Clause
Prohibits Congress from establishing a religion or favoring one religion over another. In its strictest interpretation, this clause would prevent the federal government from adopting an official religion. (Also states that there must not be "excessive entanglement" between church and state.
Free Exercise Clause
Protects citizens' right to practice their religion as they choose, and prohibits Congress from restricting those practices.
For us who are LGBTQ+ especially gay/bi/pan/queer men I fear they have something much more fiendish and diabolical in mind, which cannot be described here.
I agree with you. It would be utter sorrow and depression.
