He is also reasonable and avoids strong political and social commentary while instead gently pointing out without exaggeration the policy flaws of various governments whether US, European or Russian.

As a German I feel especially sorry for our poor leaders with very wrong undestanding of how Rusia is and what it wants. I hope, our new government will do much better 🤞
Will Germany advocate to end the trade embargo inflicted on Australia by Europe for generations? Because without Australia, NATO hasn’t the use of the SIGINT system which is the essential component of its nuclear defence and intelligence monitoring.
@ Since 1973 Europe has embargoed Australia’s food exports, except wine. Most notably recently Australia was told that Europe would not replace its imports of grain from Russia with Australian, which is why Australia withdrew its AWACS from the European frontline, and there’s no replacement of that technical capacity available anywhere for at least two years because that’s how long it takes to build replacements. It’s a failing of the Europeans to be waging an economic war against Australia in favour of Russia and other autocracies, particularly as without Australia and the billions it spends on defending Europe each year, that’s there’s no substitute for the SIGINT system. Somehow the Europeans though think that they are strategically brilliant in ensuring economic damage to the irreplaceable member of Five Eyes while supporting the other four countries in it, particularly New Zealand which is regarded as passenger.
I may be wrong here, so Germans feel free to correct me. But I think the reluctance to aiding Ukraine has roots in WW2. After Germanys loss, Germans always feared to ever go back to a militaristic and fascist government that caused so much pain. Ever since, the Germans almost have this pacifist approach to global affairs. However, it is strange as they would actually be doing much more good on the world stage by helping victims of authoritarian governments rather than staying out of such conflicts.
Just spoken to a Russian co-worker. Her brother in law, who left Russia along with the rest of the software department a couple of days before the war in Ukraine broke out, has been told by his company that he will no longer be allowed to work remotely and if he doesn't return to Russia he will lose his job. This has been imposed by the government and hundreds, if not thousands, of people who had managed to keep hold of their job by working remotely will suffer the same fate. The brother in law has no intention of returning home, under any circumstance, so it will be a lose/lose scenario as the company will struggle to replace experienced workers who left, with those Russians who choose to remain. Seems like the Russian govt has lost the plot, along with its most competent workers.
@ailinofaolin8897 People believe in their ideological biases and think with their emotion not their brains unfortunately that is why they keep on repeating Russian casualties according to Ukraine and US propaganda when we are seeing evidence stating otherwise of low morale and mass desertion on the battle field. Russia shoots between 5 to 10 times more than Ukraine yet Russia is supposed to be losing 4 to 5 times more in a war of attrition? Even a 5-year-old child knows better. Russia economy is poised to grow by 3.8% to 4% this year and Russian GDP in PPP (which is more accurate) is now higher than Germany those are IMF and World Bank estimates not friends of Russia BUT they will still believe Russian economy is the size of Italy and it is a Gas Station masquerading as a country. They can not believe they have actually made Russia greater as a military power house with an army now almost a million and rising.
You think so? Anders is from the Danish military, so he is biased. He is part of the crew telling us about chips from washing machines, shovels and how this would be over quickly. Jezzz
@@PJM-U60 I saw all his videos. He referred many times to the limitations of both sides. He never gave me any impression that you are referring to. Maybe you should listen more carefully. Russia is not a superpower anymore. That's a fact. It s a regional power with superiority and inferiority complex at the same time. If you don t like the reality is nobody's fault. It s nuclear arsenal doesn't sell that much. Who cares how many nuclear heads you posses, from the soviet era and if are still working, when the nuclear arsenal of France alone, could destroy at least all the large cities in Russia. It s just that you don t like the fact that russians ARE taking out chips from washing machines. Anders said many times the opposite of "this would be over quickly".
I have listened to around 30 experts from different countries since the start of the war and Anders is simply the best of them. Not only in the YT environment, but in general. He has very sober look at this complicated situation.
Excellent interview. Anders since you're from Denmark, as an American I'd like to apologize for the idiocy of the president elect for causing an entirely unnecessary international incident over Greenland. Keep up the good work.
Thanks - he is VERY different. The rest of us are just flabbergasted that Trump and Harris could really be the choice the American population wanted. There are so many great candidates amongst both Republicans and Democrats, and then you end up with that choice...
I don't he's getting them to focus more on it. Once you realize how much the U.S does for the Defense of Europe alone, you wouldn't make such an idiotic comment. Germany is a good example of how bad and complicaent they've become. Europeans have been living off the backs of the U.S Defense with the exception of a few European nations
The problem is that Europe has no common military budget so it il logical that each country try to pay as less as possible and hope the neighbour's do more.
I fully agree. Biden has been overly cautious and doesn't fully understand what Russia has done and can do. Europe seems to follow him as it has done in the Mideast too. Ann Applebaum seems to have a good understanding of where this could lead.
@@maritaschweizer1117 The funny thing is: Switzerland does undercut Germany in that regard frequently, while being dependant on it's neighbor. However, their own refinancing of their own troops is quite good, but do they really use them? No.

If you provoke the bear, it will claw you. Sweden sent trainers to Ukraine to impart knowhow in electronic warfare. Fifty of them were killed in a single Kinzhal strike on Poltava. No electronic warfare could stop the Kinzhal. That was the end of Swedish resistance. And you will recall Poltava is the place where Peter the Great defeated the Swedes and ended their power.
If you really wanted to help ukraine, you should have made it heard that they sign the istanbul agreement. Now we can only watch as the people desert and flee while their territory is chewed up on the daily. Tragic that it came to this.
What an interesting interview! Thank you Jonathan, for bringing Anders back to increase and improve one's understanding of this conflict. Happy, peaceful New Year to you both.
☘️ The Ukranians I know don't want Russia in their country. Lukansk residents were forced into having Russian passports and this was not a matter of choice.
@@brendanbeirne2LOL, sure Ivan. Even if Ruzzia hadn’t just made up those numbers, the “referendum” would be bullshit, because Ruzzia held the votes at gunpoint, ran off or murdered the pro-Ukrainian majority (and even most Ruzzian-speakers identified as Ukrainian), and didn’t include remaining part of Ukraine as an option. There’s a reason even Ruzzian “allies” like China don’t recognize the fake results of that fake referendum. You didn’t earn your potato and 20 rubles today, Ivan.
@@brendanbeirne2 A referendum under gunpoint from an occupier isn't valid anywhere. Even in Krym there was a majority for Ukrainan independence, (though smaller)
@@brendanbeirne2 You think that that it was a legitimate vote? 😂 If so then you don't know Russia. Russia's playbook: 1. The Russians would not be there if Ukraine had remained with the neutrality it pledged in its declaration of independence. Now it has become a failed country.
You have a top quality guest. I have listened to 2 academic economists. These economists feel that the Russian economy is IMPLODING and the Ruble is becoming next to worthless. This may peak by the summer of 2005. We should look at the non-military aspects of the war. We must pay more attention to the destruction of the Russian economic system and Russia’s inability to provide for its citizens plus the loss of making new military weapons. RS. Canada
Yeah! Glory to the neo fascist government in Kiev that keeps sending its people into the meet grinder and sells everything that has any worth in Ukraine to Black Rock
The starting point in a shift of pattern/axioma/paradigm on the part of G7 countries, for example, would be to accept and declare publicly that : "RUSSIA IS AT WAR WITH US ALREADY, SO LET'S SEE WHAT OUR CONSTITUTIONS SAY ABOUT IT ..." and start acting like President Zelensky has been doing for the last 3 years. That is: FACING THE THREAT HEAD ON, in the ways, times, and places they deem appropiate according to how the events evolve.
Too many countries in the West including my own (US) are more concerned with restoring relations with Russia than stopping this cancer before it spreads further.
I do not totally disagree with you as there could easily be done more, and it could potentially help solve the conflict faster and defeat them for good, as Russia seems to have its hands full already. But that is if that doesn't make China, India, Iran and North Korea go similarly all in on Russias side. It could potentially very quickly spin out of control to WW3, and with many potential nuclear powers involved it would be a very dangerous place to end up. Also so far it is not raining with missiles and drones in any NATO/EU cities but that could be the new everyday for european countries, which I guess the leaders are trying to prevent.
Wish You all the best for Yourself and Your channel, Jonathan! I know, Ukraine will win. History is on its side. Let's hope, 2025 is the year! Slava Ukraini!
I agree that regime survivability is the most vulnerable point for Putin. Our actions should be squarely focused on that. It will take many forms: military (e.g., opening the spigot of weapons support), economic (e.g., oil price, further tightening of sanctions on critical components), financial (e.g., cutting off key banks beyond Gazprom Bank), and political (i.e., China). But all of these actions should be a concerted portfolio of measures to end Putin’s regime. That’s the only strategically viable approach.
Ukraine is multi ethnic country. Not only opinion of ultra right extreme nationalist mainly from Galicia count. The only way to lasting stability and peace is to give equal rights to all citizens.
Thank you so much for having Anders on. It gives me so much hope for Ukraine in the face of all the chattering heads decrying supporting Ukraine in the US media who I refer to as the neo-code pink hippies like Carlson, Bondingo, Beck, Walsh, Rogaine, and etc. I agree on so many levels with other positions they hold, but just can't agree with them on the significance and strategic importance of the orc vs freedom war.
Wonderful to see Anders back on your channel! Of course, he is correct that this is a war about power, empire, and imperialism instead of territory. As has been said by others, Russia with Ukraine is an empire, while Russia without Ukraine is just another country (albeit one with nuclear weapons).

So? What's your point. Nukes do not scare me. You're dead, you're dead. Fear mongering is all you amount to.
Just to mention in WW2, the use of V1 and V2, Tony Robinson did a programme years ago called Blitz Street, and they found that the V1 actually did more damage in relation to its cost than the V2. However the V2 did have the "oh scary" psychological thing attached to it.
Putin seems to be trying to threaten us that Oreshnik could deliver a batch of nukes to a target, without saying 'nukes' . But he also knows that actually detonating even one nuke in Ukraine would damage or end his relationship with Xi and China
@@charlesburgoyne-probyn6044 Both the V1 and V2 were literally "vengeance weapons" (Vergeltungswaffen). Another reason why the V2 specifically was so unnerving is that (because it was supersonic) there was no audible warning of its approach.

Excellent. One matter which I would love to hear more analysis on, is what would discourage North Korea sending masses of troops to Ukraine and how doing so could be undermined. I have heard that Kim doesn’t care about his people and that there is no freedom or free speech, so this is a concern.
The introduction of DPRK troops into the war is a significant indication of Putin's desperation to avoid one of two developments that his regime fears most, first, the need to start conscription of young men from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other large urban areas of western Russia. That would threaten the key political support that even an autocrat like Putin needs to continue the prosecution of the war. Secondly, other than a new round of increasingly unpopular conscription as casualties mount, Putin is also in a race against the downward spiral of the Russian economy. Rising inflation, ever higher interest rates, shortages of consumer goods, declining reliability of air and rail transportation for lack of spare parts, rising consumer and small business debt, and falling international oil prices are all causing Putin to nervously look over his shoulder in terms of political support for the war. Read Von Clausewitz, and see where this is headed if Putin cannot end the war without losing face!
"...... introduction of DPRK troops......" Where are they? Who had seen them? Who had counted them? Same people who counted Russian jets destroyed by that marvelous Ukrainian figther pilot, with a call sign "Ghost of Kyiv"? 🙄

I really wonder why there’s no discussion about the errors the imperialistic narrative have had on firstly the support of Ukraine, secondly Russia’s allies behavior and lastly on the resistance inside Russia. I hope to hear that someday, if for no other reason we have talked about everything else thus far. This was a really great interview, Slava Ukraini.
Very good conversation. There will be chaos in the US in the next few months, foreign interference in the elections, and government will be in a bit of a turmoil. If confirmed as President, Trump will say one thing but as he does the opposite, will turn his back on Ukraine, for Putin. European countries must come together to help Ukraine, UK, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, etc. We are all in the fight of our lives, but one that together we will win! 💙💛🔱 Thank you, Jonathan and Anders! 💫🫡
Please tell the world what Ukraine could do that will put their allies in a tough position. It would give us some ammo to battle the narrative (pushed by Russian propaganda) that Ukraine is ungrateful and Zelensky is a spoiled kid. It obscures the fact Ukraine is fighting for their survival aswell as our security!
My contact at the kursk frontline says the following 1) the main shortage is fpv drones .. they need 20-30 but get 3-4 … its due to russian use of small groups 2) a lot of koreans 90% just go headfirst kamikaze infantry but 10% are “specialists” 3) rus equipment at kursk functional 1980s style ak guns etc
I agree with Anders that Ukraine's allies could have done more in response to North Korean boots on the ground in Kursk. Hopefully, Germany gets strong leadership soon. Britain's leadership is weak, France is dodgy. I hope Trump sees this for what it is and helps Ukraine to win.
It is clear that Russia intentionally limited NK troops to within Russia proper. This was undoubtedly to limit the West's response to the presence of the NK troops and it seems to have worked, yes?
18:00 "Don't just look at today's figures, look at the long game" For example look how the developing country known as China has changed the balance of power over the years.
Without a reliable US partner in NATO, Europe can no longer rely on that alliance. A new European military alliance needs to be formed by those countries with the best defences and military preparedness. Maybe the following countries would be best prepared to enter into such an alliance; Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland.
We can keep the Nato even without the USA. We can keep the working infrastucture. And working with countries outside the EU like Britain, Canada and such would only make our collective power stronger. We already have the best weapons producers so we do not need to buy US made stuff.
Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland.... all first class jokers. None of them can fight like the Russans. Look at the world war record of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland - all collaborated with the Nazis. The Red Army destroyed the Nazis.

And there are lots of fast flying missiles in the west... many of them could be called hypersonic whatever that means, as there are no objective definition of the word, just like with the term "6th generation aircraft".
Fascinating geopolitical analysis unpacking Russia's long-term strategic mindset. The discussion on Ukrainian agency and Western misconceptions is particularly illuminating. Which part of their strategic perspective resonated most with you?

And by 2026, Russia will start running into major supply constraints with key equipment like artillery cannons (barrells specifically), tanks and some types of armored vehicles due to dwindling stockpiles of old Soviet kit to reactivate. They will still be able to procure new equipment, but at nowhere near the same rate. Artillery barrells may be the first we see them run into serious supply constraints with.
13:50 He misunderstands western strategy, the strategy is to prolong the war until russia goes bankrupt. Anders seem completely unable to understand the strategy, even though many people now understand that it is the strategy. To me it was clear in April/May 2022 when they went out and said that it is the strategy. Then it went silent since well it will cost a lot of extra lives to completely destroy russia. If Ukraine was given enough weapons to push russia out of Ukraine in 2023 then the war would be over but russia would still be strong and able to rebuild, so it wouldn't be a complete victory. Complete victory is only guaranteed once russia is bankrupt and the whole country goes into chaos.
The strategy is to have Ukraine use up old inventory so they can place more orders with Boeing and others. There is no strategy which involves anything to do with any kind of attempt to defeat Russia.
Though is it not the west's view that it does not want a Russian collapse ? ie the actual country. I think if Russia falls it will be because of the economic factors not the half effort of the supposed Western allies especially the US.
There are a lot of good points coming out here and I was reminded early, about Nikita Khrushchev in the USA. Although the topic was civilians and Israel the line about the woman who sews on the soldiers' trouser buttons is also a military target. And as for Ukraine's agency? Well, I think that Nukes or NATO is not an outlandish statement. But there was no reason for that in 2014.
The reason this war started is because Russia lost political leadership in Ukraine that was already oriented towards Russia. With their reckless disregard for their treaty obligations and International Law, Russia should lose territory in size equal to Ukraine's, as reparations for this criminal act of war. They wanted to steal their neighbor's land; they should lose an equal amount as reparations.
agree generally, though not necessarily land as reparation since the only reason Ru would 'lose' land is its inhabitants wanted to no longer be part of the federation of Ru. Actual reparations for its damage to Ukr can only come in the form of money, usable assets. Ru's land is not an asset of course, it's a liability as it has empoverished ppl on it (but my pt is irrelevant bcuz the inhabitants must decide to be independent or not) No one wants to deal w/ Ru, which has always been an unproductive basket-case economy that needed to blood-suck other societies' resources.
Well, muscovy does not belong south any more than they do east. Ukraine doesn't want it but perhaps they may be willing to offer protection. If we get to that point.
I think russia should lose Kaliningrad, Karelia and Kuril island... but lets be more realistic. And no I do not think Ukraine would bother letting say another 200.000 men for some extra land. They want their country back, and they want future safety. I think a way to guarantee future safety for the free world is to make russia lose. And not just make them lose, but also make it undenibly clear to the russian people without doubt that they lost. This should not be any peace in Finland kind of thing, where they lose the war but still comes across like a winner in the peace negotiations to the ignorant man. Nope. Russia should end off worse in this war than they were when they started it in 2024, and that will set a future example to future russian leaders and to dictators around the world that warmongering imperialism will end badly for them. So they will therefore avoid starting any future wars. And a solution is to allow Ukraine to invade Transnistria and get all their land back. Then will russia just have to smile and go home. They could think this is humiliating for a great power all they want. But its just time that russia grows up and realize that they have to play by the same rules like everyone else in this world. They are not any special, and do not deserve any special rules.
@joelee3716 is that a rhetorical question. Why would a force that, even by its opponent's admissions, gaining more and more territorial advantage every day want to retreat without a clear indication they will achieve their goal.
They should be foucous on the train locomotives if you can't move the trains, you can't supply the front. They are on known limited tracks , every time you take out a locomotive, you cause a delay, logistical problems, and delays. 🤔
Interesting to hear that Biden may have mishandled/misunderstood the war in Ukraine. My understanding was that Biden’s reaction was limited both by domestic opposition from Republicans, and a fear that a strong push against Russia/Putin would cause a failure of the Russian state, with all the problems that come from a nuclear state collapsing.
I like Anders a lot but I disagree with him one one key point: For Russia this IS about territory. China wants power and influence. Russia, and more specifically Putin, wants land because he thinks more land=more power. It’s a 18th/19th century mindset & Putin’s wrong, but his intentions are pretty clear, I think. If he just wanted more influence he wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine. I also disagree that Putin’s got a long game in mind. He’s not a 4-D chess kind of guy. Putin wins or he dies and he knows it. The idea that Russia will be able to reconstitute it’s forces is also dubious given Russia’s frankly pathetic industrial base. It was bad before the war. It’s finished now. Nobody will ever invest in Russia again except maybe China, and that would only be a resource grab.
Yes, the issue of territorial gain should not be dismissed so lightly. If the war is not, at least to some extent, about territory why are the Russians so desperately driving their men to slaughter in meat-wave attacks just to gain a small clutch of additional villages every week? If it wasn’t about territory the RuAF would be content to sit on what they have gained and defy the AFU to drive them out.
Russia tried to get influence through soft power, but soft power is a game where the West is really good at. This is a typical russian way to expand there sphere of influence. What happened in Syria recently is what Russia was expecting in Ukraine to happen.
I agree. Nielsen weakness is politics especially internal Russian ones. Another example is Oreshnik. It's pretty possible that the theater was for the internal consumption, propaganda aimed at boosting internal resolve and nothing about military at all. Nielsen is good otherwise and his point on Thucydides/Israel reverse comparison was very good, but as you say, he's not really understanding Putin or Russia.
Great show, the AFU has the moral high ground, more than the IDF. The AFU now has all proportional options open now. AFU could be targeting Russian long range platforms. in fresh weapons innovation re-tactical nukes. This should be in the AFU R&D. They should collaborate with Taiwan in this.
Oreshnik has many kinetic w@rheads but most of them burnt up on the way down. It also has very poor targeting control. It’s less effective than Hitler’s V weapons.
And ru's pattern since the advent of missile systems is that it seemed/appeared to be much better at missile tech than it actually was. In the late '50's and '60's the west misjudged badly in over-estimating the capabilities and numbers of missiles Ru had. The more i learned about the USSR in the cold war aftermath, during my studies in '93'-97, the more i think they're a false-front nation that has very few capabilties of any type. This has also been the case since at least 1850's if not quite a bit earlier. Over then next period, i sense the west and others will want to threaten Ru with military engagement, bcuz Ru will have no choice but to entirely back down.
The Tzar sent his navy all the way from St Petersburg to Japan and they got absolutely hammered. Poor seamanship poor leadership poor quality ships were only part of the story. Nearly 150 years later nothing has changed.
Thanks for the discussion. I wonder, if Iran is being pushed out of the picture regarding Ukraine, what about North Korea? It's my understanding that they are already supplying more than half of the artillery rounds in use, and a large percentage of ballistic missiles. Would they send (say) 100K NK troops to Ukraine? Would that make any difference? It's telling to see Putin's allies being willing to send actual troops, while sending Western maintenance and teaching troops is frowned upon... How much is West committed into helping Ukraine win this war?
Cause he has zero intellectual integrity. He's been wrong about almost everything for nearly three years, he knows it but like many analysts of his line of thought cannot backtrack on his discourse and is forced to continue the magic thinking thought process as if we convince ourselves that Russia will lose it will lose
Regarding the subject of Putin and Russia playing the long game, I just have to wonder how demographics and their understanding of it plays into that. Just by looking at a "population pyramid" of Russia it's obvious that they'll have immense challenges ahead. How is that expansion of power and influence going to come about when the numbers in the working age population really start to dwindle?

.Vladimir Panchenko, a resident of Selidovo:
"When the Ukrainian Armed Forces retreated along Mikhalovskaya Street, they started shooting everyone who was near the Solnechny store. People started hiding in the entrances. And the Ukrainian Armed Forces ran into the entrances and finished everyone off there. They went up from the first to the fifth floor, knocked on the doors, and beat up anyone who opened them. One of my friends heard Ukrainian and French speech.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces went to the 12th house and drove out those who were in the basement. The guy got indignant, and they shot him. His mother was standing nearby. She started screaming, and the men from the house opposite started to go up.
The man who started getting indignant, they shot him. People ran to hide in the entrance. Those who didn't make it in time were shot right next to entrance. Near the 10th house, Shchorsa street.
@seanlander9321 what trade embargo? Australia is not a topic for the EU as we concider Australia as an appendix of the USA and GB.
@@seanlander9321 wow i'll have to read up on this, had no idea
Interesting. Russia, once again, shooting itself in the foot.
Thanks!

@utrian4148
You certainly mean the Ukrainians that are fighting alongside the Russians now, don't you?
I agree that regime survivability is the most vulnerable point for Putin. Our actions should be squarely focused on that. It will take many forms: military (e.g., opening the spigot of weapons support), economic (e.g., oil price, further tightening of sanctions on critical components), financial (e.g., cutting off key banks beyond Gazprom Bank), and political (i.e., China). But all of these actions should be a concerted portfolio of measures to end Putin’s regime. That’s the only strategically viable approach.
Self-determination is the only issue at hand. The Ukrainians have given the Russians their answer on this issue. So are we defending democracy or not?

A V2 was twice as deadly as a V1 missile for missile, but each V2 cost as much as 20 V1s.
Putin seems to be trying to threaten us that Oreshnik could deliver a batch of nukes to a target, without saying 'nukes' . But he also knows that actually detonating even one nuke in Ukraine would damage or end his relationship with Xi and China
V2 couldn't be shot down unlike V1 both due to the lack of specific guidance were in many ways terror weapons as it was chance where they landed

They will still be able to procure new equipment, but at nowhere near the same rate. Artillery barrells may be the first we see them run into serious supply constraints with.
They might go down to a 5 to 1 artillery advantage, the horror
Are you high? There is nothing left to give.
For the most time I thought I'm alone with this view. Thanks, benny.
Exactly, see ww1 where all was fine until Germany's economy collapsed and within months it was over.
Thanks
Any chance for Stephen Kotkin at some point?
Good talk. ❤
Why would they do that? They are advancing rapidly towards the west of Ukraine and unless NATO commits actual troop there is no reversing that course.
Trains can't help you when all your frontlines are surrounded and all roads cut.
Actually he was senile from day 1....
It was also not wanting to plunge Europe into war let the conflict be in Ukraine and Russia rather than NATO countries
I agree. Blaming Biden sounds hollow when reflecting on what was known when the decisions were made.
Happy New Yar.
Over then next period, i sense the west and others will want to threaten Ru with military engagement, bcuz Ru will have no choice but to entirely back down.
lolwut? Who told you this nonsense?
Anders looks more concerned than I have ever seen him before.
Its Ukraine that is dragging drunks to the trenches
